@Burgi I've been avoiding my parents for a good five years or so

fair enough
@DavidPostill how on earth did you get 20 hats?

@Burgi not that hard Its really hard, you need to work at it
I've got 15, and I'm not even trying

12:10 AM
i've only got 6

@JourneymanGeek Oh. Thanks for belittling my hard work :)

a lot of the "official" ones can only be got if you have over 10K rep

@Burgi really?

@Burgi Oh? Which ones?

12:13 AM
examples include:
http://winterbash2016.stackexchange.com/abominable
http://winterbash2016.stackexchange.com/no-longer-grinchy

None er
You don't need 10K to close no?

i think you do
ok maybe its only those 2

ah ok

10k lets you do delete and undelete votes

12:16 AM
@Burgi I have this on SO where I only have < 5k

well my posting came to a total halt when i got a job that involved be doing stuff during the day

@Burgi Stop moaning, at least you have a job :)

This is why I'm trying to do my 100K before I'm employed again ;p

i had an almost perfect sandwich in the pub earlier
ham, cheese and pickle

12:21 AM
almost?

the cheese was a little too strong and the flavour washed out the ham

@JourneymanGeek It was clearly missing the bread part :)

a milder cheese and it would have been perfect

ah
lol
oddly enough, one of the things I miss from the UK is seeded batch loaves ._.
which I believe would be the perfect sammich bread.

white bread?

12:24 AM
....

i'm not breadist but white bread is the best

Considering the chorleywood process...
no.

Now I'm feeling peckish. AFK to raid the fridge :)

The Chorleywood bread process (CBP) is a process of making dough in bread production. The process was developed in 1961 by the British Baking Industries Research Association based at Chorleywood, and in 2009 was used to make 80% of the UK's bread. Compared to the older bulk fermentation process, the CBP is able to use lower protein wheat, and produces bread in a shorter time. CBP is able to use lower-protein wheat because some protein is lost during bulk fermentation of traditional bread; this does not occur to the same degree in mechanically developed doughs. The process had an important impact...
@Burgi british bread is basically not really... proper bread
its whipped up, baked flour-sol.

Bob
floof

12:26 AM
my parents have switched to brown bread for health reasons but it makes an awful sandwich bread

Bob
@allquixotic at least it's not OS/2, eh?
@JourneymanGeek I got 3? :P
@Mokubai Firefox still supports XP afaik, for another year. Only SP3 now though.
Chrome doesn't anymore

Mmmm. Home made mince pie and home made Swiss biscuits :)
@everybody Happy celebrations of whatever $deity you believe in :)

Bob
@DavidPostill oh, you've finally caught up? :P

@Bob you crazy antipodeans are living in the future
have you got flying cars yet?

Bob
12:42 AM

@Bob lol. Flying fox?

@Bob i said flying CARS not CATS

Bob
@DavidPostill yup :P

do flying foxes also go "floof"?
i am so not impressed with the amazon gift wrapping this year, its been extremely sub-standard
almost like i'd done it

@Burgi Technically they are bats so they make high pitched squeaks.

12:48 AM
@DavidPostill i was trying to make a joke worthy of getting starred

As bats flip and whirl toward their prey, they chirp at an accelerating rate, increasing their echolocating calls to 160-190 chirps per second. This is possible because their laryngeal muscles can contract up to 200 times per second, researchers say.

Bats start out with shorter-rate chirps, increasing their frequency as they approach their quarry and culminating in a superfast pulse called the terminal buzz.

can they not say "floof" in a high pitched way?
" " - a bat saying floof

You can buy a "floof bat" etsy.com/listing/460351366/sarzi-designs-floof-bat and scroll down a bit.

1:06 AM
@Burgi Heh, the star frenzy is still a week away

did you know there was a Madagascar 3?
bed and bad sequels... nn

Bob
1:22 AM
@bwDraco if you want. imo, the way they use hg is annoying, and the review process isn't particularly well documented, but it's probably easier if you have a mentor
I kinda just jumped in to fix a bug on a whim

I'm going to have to generate new PGP keys...

Bob
most beginner contributors get a mentor (via irc usually)

(Revoking old keys...)
Keys revoked; updated keys uploaded.

1:47 AM
Generating new keys...
New keys generated and uploaded to three key servers.

2:10 AM
Huh, I guess it's over for CyanogenMod, more or less
2

My heart just sank.

@BenN :(((((((

I really hope Lineage will be able to keep things going, ideally in a compatible manner.
The biggest issue is that CM has been downhill the last several months, being unable to find adequate funding to sustain its core product.
What next, now that the CyanogenMod distribution has been turned over to the community?
I have come to rely heavily on CM-powered devices and I really hope the Lineage team can keep the spirit of the project alive.

> Just when i thought 2016 couldn't get any worse.
(from the comments)

An unsuccessful business venture taking down a major open-source project with it. :\
My biggest concern is whether Lineage will be able to produce ROMs that don't require a wipe to migrate to from CM13.

Dog
2:27 AM
Cats not bats

The repos are very active right now as code is being imported from the existing codebase.
Well, open-source is open-source.
I am expecting to move to a Windows device for my next tablet.

3:06 AM
@allquixotic, @Bob: I am now ready to work on ZSH; the virtual machine is up to date and networking is operational. How do I get started?
(No, Clippy)

3:16 AM
The smallest positive value of float is 38 orders of magnitude smaller than 1, at 1.175e-38. The float type only provides six digits of precision, so adding that minimum value to 1 is tantamount to adding zero. — bwDraco 1 min ago

Bob
@bwDraco ...what zsh

> no poguerolling

...whoops.
ZFS.
I keep confusing the two.

@Bob I reads that as WHAT ZEE SHELL in a female french accent

Bob
@bwDraco I'm on mobile now but I have a guide for boot from zfs on debian on gist, in chat transcript somewhere
it's raidz1 and a bit outdated
quix has an updated one, also on gist and in transcript, for mirror and ubuntu
modern ubuntu has built in zfs so no need to install modules separately
quix has an updated one, also on gist and in transcript, for mirror and ubuntu
it uses efistub to boot
grub technically supports zfs boot, but grub is also a flaming pile of shit, so...

3:36 AM
I miss openSUSE's admin tools.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek is it a specific accent from a specific character person?
I'm happy I never have to touch zypper or yast again. just junk.

@Bob How?
Zypper has been problem-free for me, and while YaST is due for a rewrite, it isn't broken for me.

Bob
batten screws are awesome
and? so? therefore?
I don't like my experience with it *shrug*

@Bob What problems did you experience?
I mean, it's the distro my servers run. That's how confident I am in openSUSE.

Bob
not that any packaging system has been particularly nice to me

3:41 AM
@Bob Dependency hell?

Bob
@bwDraco eh. it's been four years. I've forgotten the specifics.
mostly Yet Another Horrible Upgrade Failure
afk, got a shed to build

@Bob I've never had any major issues with zypper dist-upgrade.

Bob
@bwDraco that makes one of us

@Bob ;p SR3?

4:00 AM
@Bob @JourneymanGeek wanna play something tonight? ;p

Wow. The cfdisk partition type list spans three pages
@allquixotic, what's the correct GPT GUID for ZFS on Linux?

Bob
4:16 AM
@allquixotic sorry, probably can't :(

@bwDraco gpt guid? wasn't aware there was "a guid" to be set

Bob
assembling a shed, then heading out for the night

@allquixotic The partition ID.

Bob
maybe tomorrow, if you're still up for it
@bwDraco zfs usually use full disks

Merry Christmas everyone :)

Bob
4:17 AM
zfs is a lvm and fs in one

Hmm...
So there should be an empty partition table or no partition table at all on the disk?

Bob
nup, point it at a disk
you only need a partition table if you intend to put other partitions on it
like a boot partition
not sure how true it is for the linux version, but the solaris version is more efficient on a full disk too
because it can make sure alignment is correct, etc
I just used a flash drive for boot

I don't understand the options for zpool create.
Wow. This is complicated as hell. Any essential reading you can point to?
...okay, created a RAID-Z1 zpool on two disks.

4:39 AM
RAID-Z with two disks? O.o

This is because I will expand the array.
Again, for experimental purposes.
Perhaps I should destroy the zpool, shut down the VM, and create new virtual disks?
Alright. Destroying the zpool.
Shutting down the VM...
Creating new virtual disk in Hyper-V.
Starting VM with new disk attached.
zpool recreated.
ZFS just doesn't "click" for me.
...and everyone is busy right now. :\
sudo zpool create -o ashift=12 -O normalization=formd rpool raidz1 sdc sdd sde

5:14 AM
I'm just running blind here.

5:24 AM
@allquixotic busy here too. Parentals have me running around like a headless poodle.

Huh. So ZFS mounts the zpool the moment you create it?

Bob
@bwDraco you can't
iirc you can only add equal numbers of disks

Hmm. I kinda think I wrote about this before...

Bob
i.e. you have a raidz1 over 3 drives, you can add another 3
but you can't (shouldn't?) add another 1

Jul 24 at 12:36, by bwDraco
ZFS is much harder to expand. You can't expand a zpool by reshaping a vdev; you need to add an entire new vdev.
I believe this only applies to RAID-Z, though.

Bob
5:33 AM
@bwDraco running blind kinda describes my first attempt...

I added the SLOG device: sudo zpool add -o ashift=12 rpool log sdb
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING

Bob
May 29 '15 at 4:09, by Bob
been rather busy lately, and now my free time is taken up by fricking ZFS
:P
May 28 '15 at 15:05, by Bob
ok, attempt to get ZFS up, round 2
May 28 '15 at 14:58, by Bob
@allquixotic I'm still struggling to get ZFS to do anything sane
my brain hurts just thinking about it

Suspended the VM in its current state. It's getting late here and I'm too tired to continue experimenting with ZFS.
(hurray for memory ballooning, less data to write to disk when suspending or creating a checkpoint)

6:04 AM
@Bob funny that we're now (both?) running it in "production" on our servers

Bob
@allquixotic yup. got there eventually
then again, it's gotten a lot more stable (or better-documented) on Linux over the last year

it was ridiculously easy for Ubuntu 16.04, actually
it was awful on 14.04

Bob
@allquixotic That's part of the whole more stable/documented thing :P
The core was always pretty stable, but the supporting software (bootloader, etc.) were... iffy

How long did it take you to learn ZFS?
What resources did you use?

Bob
@bwDraco I never "learned ZFS".
I never go and "learn" anything.
I pull the few parts that I need to know, as I encounter them.

6:06 AM
@allquixotic, does your job require it?

Bob
I dont "learn" a whole technology because that's just impossible.

@bwDraco I started using it with Ubuntu 14.04 before it was officially supported; I read a bunch of guides, Ask Ubuntu and Unix.SE questions, and GitHub gists, and eventually figured out how to make a bootable / on ZFS with the kernel, initramfs and GRUB on other partitions

Bob
need to know how to do something? Search the manual. Search the ZoL wiki. Search SF. Search Google.
Evaluate the results and implement them as necessary.

with 16.04 I moved from EFI back to BIOS/CSM mode (for ease of use), and the steps to get it running, even with the kernel inside the ZFS filesystem, were much shorter and better documented
not all Linux distros support ZFS out of the box; of the ones that do, Ubuntu 16.04+ is probably the best

Bob
@allquixotic Heh, I ended up playing a fair bit on a local VM to get the whole root-on-ZFS thing working.
I'd still avoid GRUB because IMO it doesn't really offer much apart from maybe avoiding an additional drive.

6:08 AM
never had occasion to mess with ZFS at work, but I've installed two LTS releases of Ubuntu from scratch on my dedicated server using two very different configurations

Bob
But I'd still go the additional drive, cause managing multiple boot partitions (on the mirrored drives) is a pain.
There was a suggestion to create a boot LVM/mdraid mirror independent of ZFS, on the ZoL wiki.
But ZFS and mdraid? NOOOOOOOPE

with 14.04 I had to compile the custom kernel, and none of the built-in tooling or scripts were configured to work with ZFS

Bob
@allquixotic Wait. What.

with 16.04 you can't use the official Ubuntu installer to install on ZFS, but it's nowhere near as complicated because you're not compiling anything

Bob
Pretty sure 14.04 worked with the dkms modules?

6:11 AM
@Bob custom kernel module, I mean

Bob
Ah, yea.
Those aren't particularly hard...
Literally a single line to do it.

it was more that update-grub, grub-install, etc. had no support for it

Bob
@allquixotic Yeaaaa... that's one of the reasons I avoided grub
The other reason was grub being braindead even outside of zfs...

kind of annoyed that all the lower level system software works great with ZFS now in 16.04, but they were too lazy to add ZFS root to the installation program
if they had, OVH could provide a GUI driven install from their web panel to install to ZFS root
that'd be awesome

Bob
Sep 6 '15 at 17:56, by Bob
In fact, I couldn't get GRUB stage 2 to work with ZFS either
Sep 6 '15 at 17:59, by Bob
but you need to figure out GRUB :P
Sep 6 '15 at 17:59, by Bob
there's a bunch of issues on github about the brokenness of GRUB for ZoL
bad good times.

6:13 AM
I don't think it'll work without either an ESP or a bios_grub partition for the stage 2

Bob
seems they might've fixed most of them in the last year though

you can't have the stage 2 in a ZFS filesystem
hence you can't do wholedisk

Bob
@allquixotic that was the other reason
@allquixotic downside there is you're stuck with either boot depending on a single drive, or having to use non-zfs raid
neither of which is a good option

@Bob I have the bios_grub boot partition, as well as the boot sector, dd copied from one drive to the other

Bob
I think they were trying to get stage 2 inside zfs working

6:15 AM
IF one drive failed, I could tell it to use the other

Bob
but now you're saying it still doesn't work, soooo

it's effectively "manual RAID-1"

Bob
@allquixotic yea, as long as you keep them synced in case you ever update one... bleh.
and you'd have to manually clone when you replace a drive
it's effectively poor man's raid. I don't particularly like it... if I'm gonna go to the trouble of setting up ZFS in the first place

@Bob it's something that gets updated exceedingly rarely

Bob
@allquixotic that's potentially worse, because you're more likely to forget if/when it happens

6:17 AM
if I did need to upgrade it I'd use update-grub (the program that writes a new bios_grub partition as well as the boot sector) on both drives at the same time

Bob
having an out-of-sync boot when you're in a panic trying to bring up a system with a failed drive... nup. not putting myself in that position.

@Bob well that's how I've got it in production, now; I'd be open to reconfiguring to use wholedisk if I can do so without losing my data, but I don't know if that's ready yet (stage2 in ZFS)

Bob
dealing with spl versions getting out of sync was bad enough
@allquixotic eh, I did it with wholedisk with efistub. probably would've worked in grub too, if the grub/zfs module worked properly.
you've seen the gist. I think you might've even set up your first on that way.
biggest problem with zfs was the ram usage

@Bob you mean zfs.ko for grub? works for me
@Bob oh? I thought the ARC is designed to give way to programs when there's memory pressure
and it leaves some space for page cache, but not too much, because the ARC it keeps for itself is smarter than in-kernel page cache

Bob
6:52 AM
@allquixotic does it? didn't know that
@allquixotic I couldn't get it working with deb8 last year

Merry Christmas, BTW. :)

Yes, I'm getting the same style.
Merry Christmas to you too.

thank god then. I thought some naughty virus was doing this. Phew!
Thanks!

How do you know the power output of your USB ports?
On the computer, in W7.
Is it through device manager?
I think I tried that and what I saw is that output seems to vary. One port was showing 100mAh, another 500mAh (typical to computer USB ports)
I think the output varies depending on device connected. So if it's USB thumbdrive, it makes sense to show 100mAh. If it's something more power consuming like external HDD then it's 500mAh.
What I found strange is when I connected TP-LINK travel router (1A) in 2 USB ports (500mAh each, hence forming 1A) the transfer rate was not optimal. When I connected it through it's own power plug (1A) the transfer was optimal.

8:26 AM
It's probably throttling its processor unless it's plugged into mains.

8:53 AM
@Boris_yo On my Skylake system I notice USB power cutting back frequently, too
when I plug battery-powered wireless headphones directly into a port on the motherboard, the charge indicator on the headphones will turn on and off every few seconds like it doesn't have enough power to consistently keep them charging
but if I plug the same headphones using the same cable into a powered USB hub, the powered hub keeps it charging steadily
your motherboard's USB controller(s) may not be able to supply enough power to satisfy the demand of all your peripherals, maybe not even enough for the TP-LINK router alone

jMylesI am looking for a solution that is similar in some ways to multiseat, but with one important difference: I want two (or perhaps n) users to be able to sit at the same monitor, sharing the same desktop environment, but be able to use their own keyboard and mouse, with their own cursor. Q: High Current Pending Sector Count

TanaySo my laptop's hard drive has 3300 current pending sector count. Its performance getting worse each day i suppose. Should I just go for a new one or is there anything that I should try? Thanks.

10:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek What's a "current pending sector"?

@ThatBrazilianGuy hard drive sector that needs to be moved to a spare sector but hasn't yet
Its bad

@ThatBrazilianGuy that happens even with clear instructions

@allquixotic That's interesting. I like this device:

It's 9:34am and I've been awake for nearly 2 hours.
My stomach hurts because of the amount of pineapple dessert I ate.
I'd eat it all again and then some:

P.S. Tried using iPad 2 Mini's USB charger to charge external battery power pack and it was a crawl! I then read that charger will output maximum power only when Apple device is connected and handshake is being made. Charging other devices means the least power will be used, potentially putting a strain on charger.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Bring some to here.
I suggest FedEx overnight delivery.
Don't forget the insurance. This one may be too tempting for FedEx courier to ignore...

@Boris_yo Sorry, but it must be eaten very cold, nearly frozen. Otherwise it would melt.

@ThatBrazilianGuy FedEx can accomodate minibars.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Put it in a Dewar Flask with liquid Nitrogen :)

> This item does not ship to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Sorry, @Boris_yo
I can only eat this dessert at christmas. =/
Well, I could eat it at any time, but my aunt makes a perfect one and only at christmas.
I flat out told her, if she didn't bring it I'd turn around and leave at the door ;p
Yes, it's that good
