Awww, darn @jrg, I can't vote for you....I don't have enough rep here....:-(

jrg
Quick! Spam the suggested edits review page! :P

I would have to suggest 15 edits....

jrg
that was kind of a joke btw...

I will suggest some edits
but not 15
Really the only thing I have done on AU is suggest edits.

jrg
thats about all i've done on SO.

7:13 PM
I have asked some questions on SO.
SO was my first introduction into the SE network.
And, because I didn't understand the concept of the network, namely what's on-topic, etc.
I eventually got banned
From SO

jrg
haha(?). :P

However, bmike was generous enough to help me.
@jrg It was pretty funny
It wasn't an account that I really use, so it wasn't a big deal.

jrg
Nice....

Yup

Like proper banned?

7:17 PM
That's part of the reason I haven't posted many questions or answers.
@OctavianDamiean No, just banned from asking questions
It was an automated ban.

Oh, alright.
Yup, I know.

Yeah, if I was banned by the team, I wouldn't be happy.
Just curious @jrg, what's your take on this?

Q: Should we be changing titles from "How to...?" to "How can I/do I/should I....?"?

daviesgeekThis was a question that I brought up in the chat room yesterday. I brought the question over here to meta so that all the answers from all the people could be put into one place. The question is: Should we be changing titles from "How to...?" to "How can I/do I/should I....?"? I don't like "H...

There is a nice question on Meta.SO about that.

jrg
let me read up on it

@OctavianDamiean Where's that?
I was looking for it, but couldn't find it.

7:22 PM
I'm trying to find it right now.

jrg
@daviesgeek i agree with nathan.

@jrg I assume you just upvoted it

jrg
@daviesgeek yes

7:24 PM
@OctavianDamiean reading it

I heard something about a "Ubuntu smartphone" is that true?

@jsfiddle Y U SUCK!
no question.. statement.

@Alvar Maybe in the future, yup. :)

jsFiddle: Home of the 504 error.

@OctavianDamiean future? like tomorrow?

7:27 PM
No, not tomorrow. :)

@Alvar 14.04

@OctavianDamiean Yeah, I have to disagree a little with some of those points.

@rlemon NOOOOOOO.... My iPhone 3G will never last that long (it's currently over 3 years...)

Which ones? There are two high score answers.

Both, really.
I agree with their overall statements.

7:28 PM
@Alvar you can get an android phone then put 10.04 on it!

However, I think that as much as possible, a title should be a question.

no touch support unless you vnc into it

A real question.

@rlemon that's just stupid...
anyone here know some VHDL?

@daviesgeek Well if you think about it then it is not that logical that it should be a question.

7:29 PM
A Ubuntu smartphone does sound kinda cool....

I'm totally lost....
@daviesgeek exactly my point..

@OctavianDamiean Huh?

After all you ask that question on a Q&A site, what else could a post possibly be than a question? :)

I'm kinda lost in what you said.

there's a really cool post on mso about titles, and whether they should be questions or not. let me try to find it

7:31 PM
Can you repeat all that, but a little differently?

Q: How do I write a good title?

Mark HarrisonA good title helps your question get the attention it deserves. What goes into a good title? Return to FAQ index

there it is :)
next time I'll scroll up a bit ;)

@StefanoPalazzo ;-)

There is also this one.

Q: Should question titles be phrased as questions? (A straw poll)

dreevesShould the titles of Stack Overflow questions be phrased as questions? For example, if I would like to learn good ways to "foo" a "bar", which is a better question title: How do I foo a bar? Fooing a bar Let's assume that in both cases I explicitly spell out the question in the body. Which ...

@OctavianDamiean Sorry, I just got a bit lost in everything else that was posted between our conversation.

when you learn a bit more swedish, you might find this page very funny! :D
http://www.modermodemet.com/

7:33 PM
Yea, right. I reread my comment and I didn't make sense. :P

@StefanoPalazzo Yeah, I prefer that.

What I was trying to say is that a question title shouldn't be a question because it can't be something else. It is implicitly a question already since the SE sites are Q&A sites. :)

ah can't even copy/paste that into google :\

Not "How to...?"

7:35 PM
@daviesgeek you do? I find it really annoying tbh. I just can't get out of the habit

@OctavianDamiean I get your point now ;-)
@StefanoPalazzo I really don't like posts that don't have a title as a question.

So basically if a user manages to communicate what the question is about in as less as possible words then that is amazing because he can ask the proper question in the body.

does anyone here know a good VHDL tutorial ?

I have no idea what VHDL could possibly mean.

@OctavianDamiean Yes and no
@OctavianDamiean ditto

7:38 PM
@OctavianDamiean it's a programming language that's really basic, it only knows '1' and '0' :)
@OctavianDamiean I have to use it in school....

I think that because the title is the only part you see on the main site, it should be a question, not a somewhat ambivalent title.
I'm trying to find a good example

-- (this is a VHDL comment)

-- import std_logic from the IEEE library
library IEEE;
use IEEE.std_logic_1164.all;

-- this is the entity
entity ANDGATE is
  port (
    I1 : in std_logic;
    I2 : in std_logic;
    O  : out std_logic);
end entity ANDGATE;

architecture RTL of ANDGATE is
begin
  O <= I1 and I2;
end architecture RTL;

@daviesgeek I mean if he can write a very short and descriptive question then sure, but otherwise no.

in python: I1 & I2

@OctavianDamiean The majority of the time, I'd say that the title of a question can be rephrased into a concise question.
If, not, the whole title still appears on the main site, so even if it isn't a short title, it's okay

7:40 PM
However there is also the language barrier problem. Some people may just not be able to phrase a concise question.

@StefanoPalazzo I get that, but this is a "bit" more complex...

There are some, very limited cases, where, either, you can't think of a good title, or there isn't one.
@OctavianDamiean That's what I do.
I go around cleaning up posts, mainly editing titles to become real questions.

It was AU's newsletter that made me think of it but maybe it is too late for us to benefit from it:

Q: Include information about election in the newsletter

@StefanoPalazzo I'm trying to design a clock pulse and a div clock pulse to slow the phase, and then a control unit...

@Alvar it looks really complicated to me. for this kind of stuff I'd say you're better off with a book than with a tutorial

7:42 PM
@daviesgeek Yup, I did that a lot on Stack Overflow but now I'm not quite sure if that is really a good idea. :)

@StefanoPalazzo hmm...

@OctavianDamiean I do that on all the sites I am a user on.

@StefanoPalazzo do you know any good books I can find online and read NOW ..?

@NN Already upvote it (I was actually the first one to upvote it) :D

@StefanoPalazzo oooh I think I know, that meta SO question about free books....

7:43 PM
@Alvar not sure if it's good, but here's a free one: users.ece.gatech.edu/~sudha/book/starters-guide
@Alvar yes, I'm just adding that book ;-)

@OctavianDamiean I was surprised it was not already requested. Most things I come to think of are already requested.

@OctavianDamiean If you have a good answer for my meta question,
please post an answer
That would be this question:

yay! It got tagged status-planned 43 minutes after posting.

I really value people's answers.
I gotta get back to finishing up my school, so bye @all!

@StefanoPalazzo hmm... VHDL wasn't on that list...

7:45 PM
Bye! :)

@daviesgeek stupid question...

Jeez! VHDL looks complicated.
Looks like only a thin abstraction layer on top of Assembly. :P

@Alvar phew, I was just about to hit "Save Edits" when I noticed this isn't a VHDL book at all
it's just some supplementary material

@StefanoPalazzo -.-

do they have video of those lectures?
(they have them for a lot of lectures)

@StefanoPalazzo can't find it though...
I just searched for VHDL on the site..

no video though, unfortunately

@Alvar are you going to go to university next year? (should be about the correct time, no?)

7:57 PM
@StefanoPalazzo I'm studying at Lund University right now! :)
@StefanoPalazzo started this autumn... (2011)

Oh, awesome!

good for you! I thought you were still at school :)

@StefanoPalazzo yeah we have Java, vhdl, math, and some networking stuff

several exams after 7 weeks..

does sound a little tough (:

That reverse smiley must be a moderator thing. :P

@OctavianDamiean I got into the habit because stupid IM clients replace them with inappropriate images :)

I'm fully aware, by the way, that nearly all of my messages end with a smiley-face. I just can't help myself!
:)

I'm the last one to judge you. :D
Just look up my messages. hehe

I normally tend to do the same, need really to contain myself when chatting :P

It's hard to convey sarcasm without a smiley face :)
So I'll say something mean like "You're such an idiot :)"
the face makes it better <3

@rlemon Yea, your notifications are how I would like them on Ubuntu. You click on the notification and it is gone.

is it the kind of application they want?

if it is, he's probably just referring to the fact that the developer can't keep up with thunderbird releases

Q: Inscrutable scroll bar of Ubuntu One Cloud is bad UX design

user45428I'm trying to upload an 81MB and another 505MB file to my ubuntu one account. The tiny little scroll-bar that pops up on the web-browser's screen is of no use. it merely tells me to wait. i have no idea how much has been uploaded, what's the speed, how much more time is estimated to complete this...

I shared it like, 4 times across all the pages i have control over I think.
