12:53 AM
@Jolenealaska oh god yes, I have been fuming while watching the coverage

It's just unreal, isn't it?

Yeah, I guess I'm in a bit of a bubble from not watching a lot of TV? But I was just really surprised, felt like I'd gone back years.
Seems like total amateur hour, couldn't believe how clueless they seemed to be.
The "wife of a bears lineman" thing wasn't just the Chicago Tribune, it was in the on-air coverage.
They started the segment talking about her husband, blah blah NFL this and that, now why are we talking about him? Because of this lady who's in the olympics!

I'm in the same boat. I very rarely watch TV, and I mostly get my news online. The line that really killed me in that article was the one crediting the husband for his wife's win.

Yeah.
I was watching when they said that too.
I know being on TV and talking constantly is hard, so there are going to be some generic sportscasters, but I wish they'd at least have one seriously qualified person there to keep things on the rails.
Surely if they had a female swimmer in the booth with that guy...

Only if she is wearing a swimsuit!

1:11 AM
sighhhhh

That made me cry!
Awesome video!

yeah!
and from the semifinals I think:
I don't know exactly what she's been through, sounds like it's been kind of rough, so I'm super happy she did well!

I'm going to research it, because one way or another, I want to quote her in my book.

1:20 AM
more amazing photos and stuff
I love the "rage" one

Great find. This makes my day, and earlier today I had my final court appearance for the crap I've been dealing with.
So all in all, have had a pretty good day!

Yeah, I saw, glad you've gotten through it!

I was the fourth of five to answer his 50 or so questions.
One of the questions was, "Have you ever filed for bankruptcy before?"
I was the only one of the four I heard to answer in the negative.
I was also the only one to make the guy laugh.
I made him laugh several times :-)
I half wanted to invite him to dinner.

1:36 AM
haha, yikes
I wonder if you were just lucky or if most people who file have filed before :(

An interesting part of the process is that you have to file a document called "Statement of Exemption from Presumption of Abuse Under §707(b)(2)" basically asking if you make less than 150% of the median income for your town.
So, if I made over $130,000 last year, I would have to file some extra stuff explaining how I can make 130,000 a year yet can't pay my debts.

for a second I forgot the 150% and was very surprised at the high standard of living there!
$87k is still... pretty high though!

It's actually closer to 70 or 75. I was basically pulling figures out of my ass.

Oh, ok.
Yeah, wikipedia says $67k in 2009, but still, 4th highest state.

The high average reflects the cost of living here too.
The grocery store would shock the hell out of you.

1:45 AM
Yeah, I figured.
I've been to Hawaii, I have some idea.

Same principle

Yup!

Alaska and Hawaii have an odd affinity. There are many, many people here who only go back-and-forth between the two states.

We cooked for ourselves some while there and yeah, not cheap, especially the produce.
@Jolenealaska well y'all are right next to each other on the map, only fair

It's produce here that will kill you too. We can grow 1200 pound pumpkins, but not much more.
@Jefromi :-)
@Jefromi and Alaska is only slightly larger!

1:51 AM
amazing!

This is worth a look:

weeeee

I love my state, even if we will give our electoral votes to Trump.
I am sending an email to every elected Democrat in the state quoting Trump as saying that the change of name from Mount McKinley to Denali is a slap in the face to Ohio.
Hopefully, they will pass that on to voters.
Since I finished my court stuff today, I have time for that kind of nonsense! And, I'll be spending more time here too.
I haven't written a letter to the editor since before we legalized pot. I think that Trump quote belongs in the Anchorage Daily News! And the Alaska Digest and many more. OOOH a project! :-)
A close childhood friend is an Olympic silver medalist, and a worldwide gold medalist (no relation).
Natasha Kaiser-Brown (born May 14, 1967) is an American sprinter who specialized in the 400 meter run, and is the current Drake University track and field coach. Kaiser-Brown was born in Des Moines, Iowa. In high school, she was a nine-time state champion for Des Moines Roosevelt and is the current record-holder for the 100 meter and sprint medley relay events. At the 1991 Pan American Games she finished fourth in the 400 meter run and won a gold medal in 4 x 400 meter relay. She won a silver medal in the relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics with her teammates Gwen Torrence, Jearl Miles and Rochelle...
@ElendilTheTall Guess what I just found out? Bill Bryson went to my high school.

1 hour later…
3:41 AM
@Jolenealaska I'm glad to see he's dumb about that kind of thing too....

@Jefromi It will be my pleasure to get that out as much as I can.

4:28 AM
Wow... For the Washington Post (of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein fame) to put out something this polarizing, this close to an election is unprecedented.
I have never seen such a respected newspaper do that. Yeeouch.
3 more months.

4 hours later…
8:14 AM
Liiiinnnndddyyyy

9:03 AM

I love pop science, so I'm sure I will like it.

9:09 AM
Airy underwear item, (1-6)

What is 1-6?

the number of letters
hyphenated

So it is 6 letters long? Then what is the 1?

no, it's one letter, a hyphen, then six letters :)

G-String?

9:12 AM
correctomundo

the 1-6 made that one easy.

ya
ok...
No real news from a place in the USA (3,7)

USA Today? No...

remember the literal clue is always at one end, so it's either 'no real news' or 'a place in the USA'
the latter would seem more literal

New something...

9:16 AM
that means the other bit is word play, or an anagram
only so many famous New somethings in the US I would think
especially with the letters no real ___s

New England?

(-‸ლ)

I take it that's a no?

Does "stiff" refer to a drink?

9:22 AM
you tell me
look for the literal clue first

I keep trying to make "pipeline" work.

well, perhaps the literal clue isn't 'oil installation'

made stiff...
I don't suppose the answer is erect?

you wish ;)

Among synonyms for "stiff" is rigid, and an oil installation is a rig. Rigid?

9:31 AM
bingo!
Rig

YAY!

I had = I'd = id
rigid

Oh FFS

:D
here's one I haven't got yet
Bad luck that the gangster rings (6)
last letter is O
Can't think of a word meaning 'bad luck' ending in o
but 'rings' is plural
which would seem to require a plural ending

What does a gangster ring?

9:38 AM
¯(ツ)/¯

Lets look at a cross clue.

O comes from Orleans
ah, here's one
Passed being pleased, perhaps (7)
anagram of pleased probably
E _ A _ _ _ _

I see an anagram, but it makes no sense.
Oh, yes it does...
elapsed

so our gangster clue is _ _ _ D _ O
studio?
hmm

I don't see it.

9:44 AM

Otherwise a Conservative's rhetoric (7)

oratory!

so that's _ O _ D _ O

I'll buy that.

voodoo?
hoodoo?
let me look up hoodoo
it must be hoodoo
hood = gangster
rings = Os

OK, but I have never heard of hoodoo.

9:51 AM

Depict a man on the left (7) _ O _ _ _ A _

I had my final court appearance today for my bankruptcy. I am officially bankrupt.

yay!
I guess
erm

yeah

so how does that effect your day-to-day?

No more calls from bill collectors, mostly.
And it's no longer hanging over me.
My stress level is down considerably.

9:58 AM
all excellent results
maybe I'll declare bankruptcy myself
:)

You do have to be a bit convincing :)

I'm straight broke yo!

9 hours ago, by Jolenealaska
I was the fourth of five to answer his 50 or so questions.

I wonder if she has any clue how much she has charmed the world

10:10 AM
indeed
ok
3 clues left and it's complete
Graduate who's never been in a union (8) _ A _ H _ L _ R
Bachelor
it's easier to see when it's written horizontally lol

LOL that was a good one.

Dexterity that sounds trifling (7) _ _ _ _ G _ T
must be GHT

slight

Sleight
Gave a fellow the wrong date (7) _ O _ A _ E _
Is it not 'sleight of hand' in USE too?

No, I think it is usually spelled slight.

10:14 AM
only if you're spelling it wrong it would seem :P

Apparently that is correct. TIL

anagram of AFELLOW... go
hmmm
I can't see any

I can't either

can't be anagram then

I still don't see one and I'm using handy Scrabble tiles.

10:20 AM
maybe it's not date but gave
hmmm

Donated

What was the whole clue?

> Gave a fellow the wrong date (7) _ O _ A _ E _

I think that one would've had me stumped for quite a while.

nah
you're sharp as a tack

10:27 AM
well, now i'm bored

Troi called me today to let me know that I played an illegal word last weekend :)
I'm actually very close to having to go to bed

mmmm hmmm

I have a dog that needs me in the mornings these days.
So I need to be up before the break of noon

mmmmm hmmm
:P

I'm about to lose this dog too, his family is moving. So, tomorrow I'll put my flyers again.

10:34 AM
"WANNA SEE YOUR DOG AGAIN? LEAVE $500 IN UNMARKED USED NOTES UNDER THIS FLIER BY MIDNIGHT. NO COPS. PLEASE TEAR OFF MY DETAILS, HAVE A NICE DAY"

:D you

This dog is the polar opposite of Tooth-Monster. So sweet.
With one ear that stands straight up, and one ear that flops.

an autistic person's nightmare

That sounds like a clue to the crossword puzzle you've got me playing.

10:39 AM
lol

It's almost 3, I'd better go to bed.
I may be here before you head home.

okey dokey

Aarrgghh

no sleepy?

no sleepy

my fault? :D

you wish :)

ooo, burn

11:27 AM
I had a funny moment earlier today

The courthouse is downtown. I avoid downtown like the plague.
I gave myself an extra half an hour just to make sure that I would find a parking space.
I found one, right in front of the courthouse.

'a funny thing happened to me on the way to the courthouse'

but, here's the thing. I'm not sure... lol
I'm not sure that I have parallel parked since leaving Maryland 17 years ago.
I finally just gave up and asked some stranger on the sidewalk to park for me.

lol
and she never saw her car again

11:31 AM
Please! Someone steal my car!
I've kept the key in the ignition since the day I purchased it.

lol
'free to a good home, just scatter some glass around first'

The bankruptcy trustee seemed a bit incredulous when I told him that my car is an 89.
It's the well parked one in front of the building.

you do seem to see a lot fewer older cars these days
they all seem to be within 7 or 8 years old
planned obsolescence probably

It's true

buy Japanese
it's the only way

11:37 AM
And apparently 89 was a good year for Ford Tempos.
I was perhaps in basic training when the car was built.

learning your musket drill

yep!

so
what shall we do
what. shall. we. do.
hmm hmm hmm
okey dokey

12:40 PM
@Cindy hi

8 hours later…
8:12 PM
Hi guys
So I bought something strange at my local asian store.
It's a piece of... pie/cake
The inside is bright green, and has a very unique texture, just like plastic
Sorta strangely stringy, and with quite little flavor too.
Does anyone have any idea what that could be?

Any images? If it's bright green it's probably matcha flavored, whatever it is...

I'll try to make an image
It's not really matcha, I think.
It mostly just tastes like dough
I also have a video

Looks like a giant mochi.

Video coming up in a bit
The way it tears is kinda horrifying
@Catija What do you think about it?

@Danu I'm not sure I recognize it but yeah I'd guess it has some kind of glue-y starch, maybe tapioca or glutinous rice

8:25 PM
Is something like this worth posting a question on the site for? Or is it kind of a long shot to hope for something more specific?

You could certainly try!
Especially if you know what kind of store it is (Chinese?) someone might recognize the specific thing.
or maybe no one will, hard to say

I think it was mostly Thai stuff
but then again, I'm in Munich so "Thai" might be meaningless here ;)

No reason not to. :) Particularly since you have an image, which is useful.

8:41 PM
Done.
