@wBob Thanks! How did you automate/schedule your Polybase queries to import data without using Data Factory?

5 hours later…
9:02 AM
@mmarie You just run ordinary T-SQL (with Polybase extensions). Polybase runs under the hood. There is an SSIS Feature Pack you might be interested in. We found loading data to ADW with the conventional SSIS OLEDB connectors really slow. Once you've set up an external table, loading a file is just a matter of it being in the right directory (Azure Blob Storage or HDFS).

"Oh, we're doing OCR in the database layer"

@TomV wtf? windows.forms, system.drawing?

@TomV * Smack *
Why?

God knows
it's a third party thing that happens to be the top CPU consumer on this instance
I kindly asked them to get off my lawn and remove that crap from my production instance
The "kindly" that involves men in long white coats and syringes.

@TomV And there is the #1 reason that you don't put CLR sprocs in your database for application code. You're paying database licensing on the CPUs you're running it on. I remember having this discussion nearly 15 years ago with java folks who thought Java sprocs running on an Oracle DB were just the best thing since sliced bread.

LOL, that company's lead architect has "lifetime learner" in his linkedin blurb
I hope he lives a long life because he has a lot to learn

Intelligence is figuring out how to do OCR from a stored procedure.
Wisdom is knowing why it's a really bad idea.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells How's things? Are you back to work yet?

@Phil Yes. I've been back in work since May.
How's life in SAP Land?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells We were discussing with Jack yesterday that you are the only one that can initiate a gathering ;)

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Shall I initiate one then?

It's fine with me. I'll be away from 9-24 August

Hm. I'll be away from 20 aug to either 4 or 11 Sep. Maybe after that?

12:14 PM
There's still a whole month till August. Perhaps end of July / first days of August?

I've got someone staying with me until the end of July and I'll also be prepping for a house move. After that I'll be moving house then overseas for 2-3 weeks.

Ah. September then.

How about September 15?

I'm moving too at July 23.

@ypercube @Martin Smith @MarkSinkinson @MarkStoreySmith @JackDouglas @JamesLupolt - How about September 15 for drinkies?
6
@Darth_Wardy - do you live in or about London?
@Phil - fancy a sojourn down to London on Sep 15?

12:17 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells That's the week after SQL Sat Cambridge.

September 22 then?
@wBob - do you live anywhere near London?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells sorry I'm just thinking out loud - 15th was a fine suggestion.
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Midlands. Work "down there" sometimes : )

Fancy a trip down for drinkies?
We do a semi-regular drinkies in London for folks who live in the area.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I would like to sometime, definitely. I sometimes come down for the SQL Supper user group and/or work permitting.

Haha, they corrected my code and made it worse

12:21 PM
@wBob Pencil in 15 September then. We can see if anyone's got somewhere you can crash. Unfortunately I probably won't by then.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ [chants] rollback ... rollback ... ROLLBACK!
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells [pencilling] thanks for the invite

12:38 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells nope

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Poking around that database I guess they wanted to support different systems (NAV, AX and CRM) without writing too much logic in the different systems but also without writing a middle tier

@TomV Doubtless it was something like that. Bone-headed architectural decisions are frequently underpinned by bone-headed political constraints and objectives.
I've heard an aphorism that goes something to the effect of 'Any sufficiently large software project will have a structure that mirrors the political structure of the organisation implementing it.'

1:29 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells you moving?
ah
reading back :)

1:43 PM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ I noticed that Hillary Clinton is not popular in Greece:
Is that likely related to her son-in-law's hedge fund?

she has some surprisingly (for me) good numbers though

2:03 PM
Urgh, I'm in the 14% of the Swedes then.

2:37 PM
@Colin'tHart me too. except i'm not swedish.
also ... i have no confidence in trump, either.

Q: Do you have confidence in $politician doing the right thing for the world, A: No

ding ding ding
so ... go wales

2:57 PM
Oh people are awesome.
I can do without your help, thanks. Please don't answer to any of my questions in the future or you will have to live with appropriate responses to your "suggestions". — John 2 mins ago
Makes me so happy I decided to contribute an answer today. And makes me wonder why the hell I bother.
People are ungrateful tools.

@AaronBertrand LIVES!

Yo, how is everyone doing? Sorry, two kids keep me f*ing busy

it's the way life goes
doing well
people are getting laid off here

3:13 PM
@JamesLupolt We have no confidence for Americans at all. Being a woman doesn't help ;)
@JamesLupolt First time I've heard of that. Was this something that hit the news recently?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ His hedge fund that tried to game the Greek financial crisis and failed? I've noticed more articles about it lately but it might just be my filter bubble.

yay excel bug!

Design choice, effendi

4:02 PM
@wBob Yeah. I know how Polybase works. I meant are you using SSIS, ADF, or Powershell with run books to schedule the queries/stored procedures.

@swasheck Like right now today?

@mmarie yesterday we lost some mgmt
not going to lie ... i'm polishing the resume just in case

@swasheck If you want to come to the BI side, you know how to contact me ;-)

i dont know how to bi

I can spell it.

we have two vacancies now

4:08 PM
I can also make juvenile jokes about it.

@JamesLupolt on bi?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ for sql server DBAs

@AaronBertrand setting the bar pretty high, eh?
@JamesLupolt quite the commute

@swasheck always.

@JamesLupolt is one of them your position?

4:09 PM
@swasheck yes, i'm moving to another company nearby next month

Q: How much disk space do I need to add a primary key to a very large table?

GlazedI'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.4100.1 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.3 (Build 9600: ) I have a 491 GB table with 3.6 billion rows that does not have a primary key. The primary key I wish to add will only cover a single bigint column which contains unique values. The dat...

@JamesLupolt congrats!?! i know that's something you've entertained for a while

@bluefeet you're late

@swasheck thanks
why are people getting laid off?

@swasheck late posting in here, I've been lurking though

@JamesLupolt new cto's initiative. brought in to trim the fat. he's a hatchet

i'll be surprised if they let you go

it's not likely, honestly. however, the workload is going to intensify significantly for me. between training my teammates' replacements and picking up their on-call shifts, i'm going to be grumpier than i already am

oh
your teammates have left? or you think they'll get laid off?

4:13 PM
/me googles how seth could be any grumpier

@JamesLupolt some have been victims

Although I was looking for where you had linked the Avengers scene

whoah! nearly two years ago!

@swasheck I think always covers that.

fair enough

4:39 PM
@mmarie Sure, we were using a conventional SSIS with Agent job. We looked at ADF, I mean, it's raw.

@wBob Yeah, I'm not a fan of ADF. But my project is all azure with no VMs, so SSIS is out. So I'm probably doing some ADF or using PowerShell with a run book.

@mmarie Good luck! : )

A: Change Name of Extended Event Session

wBobNo, there is no way to rename an Extended Events session without dropping and recreating it. The NAME property is not part of the ALTER EVENT SESSION syntax, nor is it supported by sp_rename. Simply use SSMS to script and recreate the session easily. You don't lose anything by doing this.

I wanted to finish this reply with "Anything else?" <- Kylo Ren reference
but it sounds a bit rude. What do you think? : )

@wBob I wouldn't get the reference because I haven't bother with the last star wars movie. I would take your comment at face value

@Lamak lol ok. It's not so bad.
