Hey, does anybody here have an SSD? What read performance do you get from it?
My result seems to be a bit slow:
$ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 1506 MB in  3.00 seconds = 501.98 MB/sec
My 5400rpm HDD reaches around 112 MB/sec in that test.
Can my SSD really be only 5 times faster? Or is something configured badly here?
The cached disk reads are about 7000MB/sec for both my HDD and SSD btw.

marianojuIn order to debug my repeatedly crashing Ubuntu 16.04 I want to backup /var/log from my HDD to an external USB medium. I am running an live OS (Ubuntu 16.04) and using the --archive option: $ sudo rsync --archive /media/ubuntu/2f1ea741-cc93-4b0e-ad74-1e21d56d27a9/var/log/* /media/ubuntu/transce...

Ha! I flagged it faster than Smokey!

$ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 1420 MB in 3.00 seconds = 472.76 MB/sec
That's an SSD

Hmm... I expected there to be more boost...
What read speed do you get on your HDD?

@terdon you're here ?
or @Oli ? Can you maybe explain to this user (askubuntu.com/users/182432/ravi) that he should make at least essential changes, or if then not to remove the thank you in advance, instead correcting the spelling. I'm going to reject all his edits like this from now on, while a single edit i might let through a second one maybe too. But hes doing a shotgun approach on such edits.

1:14 PM
What's up?

@Videonauth Sure, reject them. He's only done 6 reviews and they were all in the past hour. All of them have now been rejected (two by me). That should be enough to get the point across. I'll contact him if it continues.

ok

@Videonauth :) Leave it as a comment.

hehehe

@grooveplex Um. Pretty much all of the 1st paragraphs is wrong though.
"Linux based operating systems use bash shell.", well no, depends on the system. Ubuntu's default is dash, for example.
"The environment variables are normally created by the operating system during installation," say what?
" Apart from that, in linux, to set environment variables, we first need to access the terminal application. " : no you don't.
"That's because the user has the privilege to add, edit, and remove different variables at will" : this is pretty much nonsensical.

should I remove it?

@grooveplex Your comment? No, the OP did indeed try. I'll just edit and remove the most glaring mistakes.

cp command does not copy directory by default
why?

tis a tool meant initially for copying files, for directories they added the recursive function later on so cp -r is you weapon of choice

couldn't they add feature to copy directory as well ?

@edwardtorvalds They have. It's called -r

that a function that treats dir different than regular files

how is that different from specifying an option for cp
you could alias it if you want

NO, the Q must be closed for two days to be able to cast delete votes for 10ks.
And then 3 delete votes + the sum of all upvotes on the Q and all answers is needed to delete it.

@ByteCommander Quite frankly, it popped in front of me, flagged it and edited it. Don't so a reason why I shouldn't have done that.
@ByteCommander I would have believed you meant it as a question if you'd used only one question mark btw. Same question to you, whith what purpose did you roll back?

I'm not 100% sure about the spam system, but if you edit a post that gets flagged to death as spam, the penalties might even hit you...
And it would not have been properly flagged as spam in your censored revision.

Only first revision, which for some reason means first edition in this case

Therefore: leave spam as it is and let people flag it. Prettifying or censoring spam posts is only counterproductive.

I'm going to be forced to use that when the toxcore wily repository is shut down, because they don't have a xenial section with qTox due to that dev war.

@Videonauth btw, by default, your script includes possible white spaces, they're in the printable chars, no matter if you add them to chars or not. By optionally addong them to chars by a flag, you double the chance :)

i know i could use string.whitespaces but i looked into the module for that and whitespaces is defined there like this whitespace = ' \t\n\r\v\f'
# Some strings for ctype-style character classification
whitespace = ' \t\n\r\v\f'
ascii_lowercase = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'
ascii_uppercase = 'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ'
ascii_letters = ascii_lowercase + ascii_uppercase
digits = '0123456789'
hexdigits = digits + 'abcdef' + 'ABCDEF'
octdigits = '01234567'
punctuation = """!"#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[\]^_`{|}~"""
printable = digits + ascii_letters + punctuation + whitespace

Then the script should remove it by default.

7:05 PM
this is why i did not simply use whitespace for inclusion
the space character however i wanted
this is why i added it in manually

Ah, sorry, I forgot I ran it with defaults...

the newes version is in the 0.0.6 branch btw not in master

@Videonauth ah thanks!

@edwinksl and me did a lot of pondering and cleaning :)

it can be cleaner still

agreed :)

@edwinksl He obviously expects the script to output something

indeed i do :p
and it does
but as well can be loaded as a module

user136984
Is there an answer on this site about how to launch something with root privileges in the GUI session?

user136984
Because normal startup items won't work due to the command requiring sudo, but can't really add it to rc.local (or whatever it's called) as it should only be launched on login.

7:25 PM
@Videonauth it is quite a different style from what I would write, I think you are better off with one reviewer at a time :)

1. no. root is never required for GUI.
2. if it needs to be started on logon the command should not be owned by anyone else than the user.

OP answered his own question in an edit to the question itself: askubuntu.com/posts/792535/revisions

@JacobVlijm yeah well i still easily fall back into c++ coding style :)

@Videonauth nono, it's not that, but I find it hard to comment on details if it is in a frame that is not mine :)

understandable

7:28 PM
I realize myself I am doing a lot of stuff by a convention that is mine.

I just begun writing a second script for providing a GUI on that module/script

@Videonauth What are you writing the GUI in?

PyQt5
so i can import this script then as a module and reuse it

cool!

user136984
@Rinzwind The GUI is required to run a command which requires sudo to run.

7:30 PM
never used pyqt

I used GTK on c++ on Windows but never found it satisfying, now there is a Qt_Designer i can shape the UI to my liking and then load it to the underlaying code which i find a good choice, keeping it modular
and sinceim learning a new language its time to reevaluate what i had insight in already if it is usable for me still
