@TIPS What happens if I put OsO4 with an alkene, but don't add any NaIO4/H2O2 after ?

9:13 AM
@Hippalectryon You would need stoichiometric amounts of OsO4.

9:32 AM
Is it feasible to form amide from ester by adding ammonia alone?

@Loong But what would you get in the end ?

!!img/dihydroxy(dioxo)osmium

@Loong And what does the alkene become ?
Also, where do the H come from ? Even in the Lemieux Johnson reaction by the way, do you need one or 0 equivalents of water ?

@Hippalectryon the usual cis-diol

9:38 AM
So you'd need two equivalents of water here ?

@Hippalectryon yes, that is just the hydrolysis of the osmate ester.
hi @Jan

@Jan Ok. And in the Lemieux-Johnson reaction, you only need one equivalent ?
(It's never mentioned in the experimental conditions)

@Hippalectryon In the mechanism of the Lemieux-Johnson reaction, you also need two H2O for the hydrolysis of the osmate ester, but you will also get water during the reaction of the periodate.

Ok, thanks !

Hello?

Hi!
!!img/hydrogen iodide

@Jan hej

Jan
@Loong Hei. Enhän mä puhu ruotsia ;p

@Jan ok, then we could talk about something else. ;-)

Jan
10:20 AM
Yeah, but I'm gonna talk to my lunch first, though ;) o/

ok, let's hope that your lunch doesn't answer.

Jan
11:16 AM
I did hear a faint 'eat me!', though …

Thank God I have Chrome. You do realize this is (perhaps explicitly) forbidden? And if this post is meant for trolling, it really doesn't do a decent job at that. — TIPS 8 secs ago

11:57 AM
When is ion formation endothermic? When exothermic?

Jan
When thermodynamics say so.

12:09 PM
@Jan Is it orbital dependent?
Does a full orbital have lower energy than a half orbital?

12:27 PM
@Loong I'm about to write my first Skeptics question.
Any TIPS you'd like to share?

@TIPS did you read their meta introduction?

I remember parts of it;

so you need an explicit claim, preferably a direct quote from a relevant source

Relevant?
Relevant to what?
@Loong I'm gonna question this, and I didn't find any questions about it on Skeptics even thought it seems to be a fairly wide-spread belief. (After a Google search)

@TIPS ok, I see. Skeptics prefers a notable claim. Thus, it would be good if you could find this claim for example in the New York Times or in a book – not just "my brother says so".

12:37 PM
@Loong Would it suffice if I put a bunch of links from Google?
@Loong (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ

@TIPS I think so. You can show that the claim is widespread.

K thanks for your time

now make me a sandwich ;-)

Bots do everything these days. !!sandwich
I said, !!sandwich

@TIPS Here you go

12:46 PM
Thanks @Chemobot.

Q: Do sandwiches taste better when someone else makes them?

TIPSI'm a bit skeptical about the claim in this poster: Click for a larger version. It's apparently fairly widespread. The New York Times and Forbes are at least two sites mentioning this. Forbes links to two relevant studies; one is behind a paywall and the other (which seems to have contained t...

@Jan Guess they learn step by step.

Jan
@Jan @Hippa! !

@Jan When I'm done with my exams ._.

@TIPS +1

Jan
1:20 PM
@Hippalectryon Again? I thought you already had them =O

@Jan Those were written exams. Now I have four weeks of oral exams
And I'll be going for a math oral in 10 mins ._.

Jan
Go, go, you can do it! Just remember that 1+1 is 3 for very large values of one ;)

@Jan When 1->4, you mean.
@Hippalectryon You really are a pitiful soul.

Wait. How the heck can math be oral?

Jan
1:27 PM
At a blackboard?

Then how is that oral?
"Student, write me some equations on thy board."
@Loong found another one. :P i.imgur.com/Pog8kgZ.png

@TIPS Written means that you have a paper with questions on it, and you do them all by yourself. In the oral exam you're alone in a room with an examiner, and he gives you questions one by one, may lead you if you're stuck, etc (the questions are fairly hard)

OK that's harder than written exam.

I guess :-)

1:31 PM
@Hippalectryon why are copper and gold the only metals not silvery?

Jan
@TIPS Actually, it's often easier because the examiner wants the student to do well and can help him. The student's result does reflect on the examiner, especially when he gave the course, too.

or are they?

@LeakyNun By "silvery" you mean grey-ish ?

Yes.

6 votes on the Skeptics question already.

Q: Are there yellow metals besides gold and copper?

AnixxAre there yellow metals besides gold and copper? Are there metals with color different than yellow and grey?

FEED ME MOAR REPUTATIONZ BWAHHHAHAHAHHAHA

Jan
@TIPS Flagging for unsportsmanlike conduct.

@Jan This time we don't know the examiners at all though :(

@Jan Aw come on! Everybody knows you're the bloodiest rep-hunter here.

Well I have to go :( see y'all

Is it normal to get an upvote and a downvote on a year-old forgotten question?
(One that hasn't activity since a year ago)
This is weird.
I'm getting upvotes on my very old questions. (D'uh, I don't have new questions)
Eh whatever.
Back to chatting on other active rooms.

Jan

I'm getting more or less recent downvotes on ages old questions and answers on German (but not enough yet that I would consider bringing it to meta/asking a @Loong mod about it).

@Jan Yah, but it feels weird you know. Latest activity one year ago and you got a downvote and upvote in the same hour.

Jan
Mhm. Community didn't bump it, did he?

It didn't. My Q has an accepted answer of >10 votes.

Jan
That's even truly weirder.

Hello

@TIPS o/

How is you today?

@Jan I cannot find any pattern in the downvotes of your posts.
@Mithoron hi

My post-writing karma has ended today since I'm intoxicated with some rep. I'll write the title FAQ next week.

Jan
@Loong As I said, there wouldn't be enough yet, anyway (but you can probably also see IP addresses, can't you?)
@TIPS Intoxicated during Ramadan? How could you?! D=

2:51 PM
@Jan (╯T□T)╯︵ ┻━┻

@Jan Yes, if we see several users with suspicious voting behaviour, we could also check their IP addresses.
But in your case, I don't even see a single suspicious downvoter to begin with. :-)

Jan
@Loong Reassuring and disassuring at the same time ;)
Although I would love the downvoters to focus on my posts with -2 score, so that I can finally get the peer pressure badge somewhere
Unrelated: My poster for the Orchem conference has been accepted! \o/

@Mithoron Oh!
@Mith you should seriously consider becoming a detective.

Rotating the molecule isn't the big deal. It's the discovery that is. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here. Discoveries in 21st century aren't all meant to be mind-blowing break-throughs. Human makes great unimaginable achievements by these seemingly simple discoveries. If this isn't a great deal, you could've been saying less about Kepler's rules about how a bunch of very large stones orbit a shinier larger one. — TIPS 8 secs ago
