12:22 AM
have you guys seen this?

Sie
@Jon Reddit might be heading down a similar road. Look at Ellen Pao for example. She was by no means perfect but they did a lot of stuff the user base didn't like under her and she was the perfect scapegoat.

Jon
Yep
They are already censoring tons of stuff
Voat.co

Sie
I think Reddit die and have a mass migration but I don't know if it will be too Voat. There is a lot of shady stuff there at the moment. Currently as long as my main subreddits stay ok at Reddit I'll stay.

Jon
I don't have much of an issue. It turned to shit when digg died
Before digg stupidity was low
Now it is rampant
When the general population starts using something it all turns to shit

Sie
12:34 AM
Eh. Reddit is fine for me. I have my little niche subreddits and works well for that.

there's always mods deleting threads though
community-driven subs yet there are undemocratic mods deleting things

ok if you'll never watch the 1962 movie Harakiri, you can watch this youtube vid of a late scene in it.
The actor playing the character in the fight was genuinely frightened... because all those guys have real fucking katanas.
BTW, that's not allowed in making Japanese movies anymore. Too dangerous.

Sie
@ChrisMcFarland It's the same way here.

12:49 AM
Nah, with stackexchange you can at least see why something was closed
with reddit, things just disappear until the user that posted the item calls out the mods

hai chris

and there's /r/undelete which is a strange beast

you're probably get a curator recommendation from maniac games on steam

:)

12:51 AM
Ah thanks
the curator stuff is weird now
before, used to have to allow recommandations before they'd show up
think it's all automatic now somehow
Valve realised that most curator stuff is very niche-specific rather than helpful to the general public

Sie
True. It does have some serious transparency problems that will probably end up being what kills it. For now I will enjoy it though. Again if you stick to niche subreddits and the mods aren't too horrible things are ok.
I like SE but due to it's format unless you have a question or go to chat you can't exactly have an open ended discussion. Again though SE is a Q/A site not a forum like Reddit is. Different strokes/fokes and that jazz.

I'm going to bed soon but I want to make at least 1 thing in blender before I go
Anyone got any suggestions... :3

Sie
A cube.

yeah

1:04 AM

needs more bloom

"This dark cube has been rumored to be the source of energy that lead to the creation of Lisp"

1 hour later…
2:11 AM
family-friendly

:D

that actually gimps the bloats in the enemies' favour cuz you no longer have stunnable body parts flying around
but w/e lol
also makes the game harder cuz you can no longer see damaged each mob is as you hit them (except for elites)
thanks, apple!

:)

Q: Errors I can't get rid of. I need assistance

BrayoHello people I am working on a game called shooting the duck in Java. It has 5 classes but the errors that I cannot remove are on framework.java class and game.java. I need help getting rid of the errors Here are codes for framework.java class package shoot_the_duck; import java.awt.Color; imp...

Not even sure what to say
"No. Just no."

Voted to close, not concise, doesn't even say what the errors are

Is voting to close something different than flagging as "should be closed"? Because I never get mentioned in the list on who closed it :(

once you get enough rep to properly initiate a close vote, "close" is then an option beside "flag"
whereas if you only have "flag" (like me), it just shows up in the Review queue for the Close Votes

7:42 AM
@Almo Glad that you appreciated. It's always good to share good shit

7:54 AM
@JoshPetrie aight, just thought I'd let someone who has at least an account there know =p

8:06 AM
Big shout out to Java as a 2D game development language

That's pretty random

user92578
8:28 AM
surge is fucking with me

power flickering?

user92578
surge is the host I use for my website

user92578
can't deploy

user92578
they were under a DDos attack

user92578
8:30 AM
But you'd think that wouldn't mess everything up for a single user trying to deploy a blog post

Maybe they shut things down a bit to try and prevent stuff

AAAH I HAVE META-ED :|

user92578
they said they're back on twitter

user92578
@KevinvanderVelden what?

Q: Does cross-posting a question make it off-topic?

Kevin van der VeldenI saw this pretty bad question. It's basically a code dump so I'm pretty much okay with it being closed. However, I then saw the close reason used by @Byte56: I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it's cross posted here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/29841735/how-to-cap...

@StackExchange SLOW

that's my 2p worth ... go down vote the crap out of it

user92578
I'd think that questions should be closed on the site they do not belong

@Darth_Wardy Migration is a thing that exists

user92578
That way the correct answers are guided to the site where they belong and where new users know to search for them

8:47 AM
I'd argue the majority of new users don't know how to search lol
or just choose not to

user92578
well yeah, but some people google

user92578
Or even just search SO

user92578
(I'm currently on a Slack channel for the first time ever, trying to get some surge help)

personally I have just stopped asking questions on GDSE now ... I tend to only ask on SO

Slack is nice. StackExchange's reply history trumps it though

8:50 AM
I think the admins here seem to think that everything has already been asked or is off topic because it has a reference to an API or game engine in it

user92578
Slack looks just like Discord

user92578
And I just saw "One of the devs is typing"

user92578
So now I know they have read my messages

user92578
But then they stopped, so now I'm like WTF, reply to me!

lol

8:51 AM
much suspense
@Darth_Wardy I sometimes feel like it's a race to see if a normal user can answer a question before the mods close it

user92578
well yeah, it's a free service but this is not a way to treat a potential customer

@ChrisMcFarland haha yeh ... i've been there

My rep is high enough on SO to go through the "Vote to Close" queue, but honestly, if a question seems to be programming/code-related, I tend to just let it stay (unless it's really bad).
Whereas GDSE feels like, there has to be a mix of code *and* game theory to make it valid
generic game theory gets closed cuz it's too broad
coding-only questions get closed cuz it could be related to non-game programming

exactly
its like GDSE has some kind of identity crisis going on

user92578
@ChrisMcFarland almost there

8:55 AM
@Tyyppi_77 (I forgot that multi-line posts don't get parsed lol)

user92578
:P

user92578
yeah but TBH most of the questions are still "i like to make game, i have design for a new cod how to mmorpg it? is unity okay? thanks for help sorry for english"

pretty much
but there's still some that seem to be kinda okay valid? but they get closed
There's still a lot of questions that go through though

Maybe it feels there's just not many of them (or I'm awake at the wrong times)

user92578
8:58 AM
god

user92578
are new users not made to read the help center or anything?

I often have questions like "i'm trying to build voxel chunks i'm stuck on this specific block of the code any ideas why it does X when I do Y?" then i'm like ... hmmm that's too specific to me, so I reword it ... then i'm like .. hmmm its not game programming enough ... meh post it on SO instead
there's probably more game programming buried away in the SO db thn there is in the GDSE db

Q: Exporting a mesh using my own personnal Voxel Editor

Gabriel RoyI would like to know how I could export a model using Assimp in C++/OpenGL. I created my own personnal Voxel Editor and it's working great. I wanted to learn true OpenGL and programmation before moving into Unity since I believe that knowing what and how the software works is always good since y...

user92578
Guy has decided to learn first C++ and OpenGL and then move to Unity

user92578
9:04 AM
WHY?

he said it himself, "I believe that knowing what and how the software works is always good"
I'd rather just get results sooner than later, but w/e :p

@Tyyppi_77 I didn't as I registered the first time :)

@Tyyppi_77 kudos to the guy ... you can never have too much knowledge right??
personally though if I had gone that path I would have moved to UE not Unity

9:19 AM
To enhance his understanding to an even deeper level, the guy must not use third party libraries to learn the "true OpenGL"

user92578
OH FOR REAL

user92578
So turns out the "we're back" announcement after a DDos attack on surge.sh didn't actually mean "we're back"

To enhance his understanding to an even deeper level, the guy must talk to the graphics card through his own driver

user92578
A dev just said on the slack channel that the deployment servers are now back up

user92578
WTF, you don't announce "we're back" unless you actually are back

user92578
9:27 AM
Anyways, here's finally last week's weekly update: gunhero.surge.sh/#WeeklyUpdate15

@tkausl also needs to develop his own card, and motherboard, and operating system, and create the parts himself after mining them with his bare hands

Jon
Tools are for noobs

Java is not for noobs

Yes
Yes it is
C# MASTA RAZ!

here we go

9:34 AM
Here we C#!
@ChrisMcFarland Did you switch from JS to C# or nah?

yeah I converted from UnityScript to C# in September last year

Now say it with me ...
C# MASTER RACE!

thanks to this CSharpatron asset I bought, assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/20232
See sharp, see sharp

Jon
You actually started with unity script?

Yes lol :(

Jon
9:37 AM
Like seriously? Lol

And learned the hard way that it compiles 7x slower
Yes lol

How long were the compile times in the end? :P

It was like 30 secs on my PC with my old Athlon
and 60 secs on my MacBook Pro lol

Jon
And you picked up a new language you can only use in unity. Nice

UnityScript's syntax is close to JavaScript so I felt it was easy to get into

Jon
9:39 AM
Didn't they drop support for it in recent versions?

whereas C# looked a bit strange so I decided to go with UnityScript until I learned the hard way that it sucks
It's still supported, but they they try to show the C# examples first now I believe
and are trying to hide Boo support completely from the docs
I'm making a Bow & Arrow weapon atm ._.

user92578
nice!

Did not plan on doing this today lol
I feel bad tho, cuz if my Wii U submission makes it though, I will probably have to release this next version as an update -_-

Jon
9:56 AM
Wii U is almost dead if you ask me
Pretty shitty third party games
Even Zelda is coming to NX
Nintendo wants badly to move away from it
I am pretty sure I am done with console gaming now

@Jon hey now, I am joining that party lol
but yeah
tbh I applied to their Wii U program in like June 2015
and they got back to me in December 2015
received devkit around the new year
I'm hoping to have my game out before xmas on it

Jon
10:25 AM
logo contest at work
woooooo, gonna design a logo with a hidden penis!

Jon
lol...
the requirement is that it is 3cm x 3cm
LOL... oh ok no problem let me just measure my screen here.
It is looking more and more like we are gonna be striking at some point in the future.

10:43 AM
Unfair pay?

Jon
for the past 10 years, they have been putting it up our asses on contract renewal -- now we are 2 years out of contract and they don't efven want to negociate anything
They want to keep taking away stuff --- after 10 years of losing I think its breaking point
And they removed the legislation that made it illegal to strike finally.
under our previous dictatorship

Jon
11:00 AM
I'm totally broken right now.... I just feel like I should give up.

user92578
:/

user92578
can't hide the penis in the logo?

Jon
There is this tech advisor pool of candidates being formed, that I applied for.
God knows when the next train will arrive, if you miss this one it can be another 10 years.
The last one was literally 8 years ago
Anyways, I got screened out of this pool, because I apparently haven't worked in at least 2 multi-disciplinary teams
Which is 100% untrue -- and furthermore I met every other fucken criteria -- and I meet this one too
Yet I get put aside like a piece of shit... by an HR person that doesn't understand 90% of the words on my resume
And now I am trying to fight it, and am being met with disdain/hate/ignored
So yeah, at this point, I am fucken broken. Being treated like a worthless piece of crap that no one gives a shit about even though I have been a hard worker for this place for the past 12 fucken year of my life

user92578
I'm really sorry to hear that

DH.
It would be way better if the HR sectors actually knew a bit about the technical terms so they actually know what they are reading

Jon
11:07 AM
OR REPLY TO MY CALLS
fuck man
I'm so highly motivated right now, its unbelievable

Would anyone like to hear an off topic story

Jon
sure sorry just venting my frustration.
Instead of punching everyone that walks by me

Ranting on the internet is a time honoured tradition

So I buy a mobile phone off of a company
They charge me £30 upfront and £30 per month for it..
It doesn't arrive, and still hasn't arrived, 1 week late
I've now got to fight to get off this stupid contract

Jon
2016 customer service

11:10 AM
customer service never answers
I'm on hold for 10 minuets on a premium line

Jon
It is like this across the board for any corporate services
They make the rules

I hate them all
I hope they all receive phone related injuries

Jon
Skim out as much as possible in customer service -- There is a reason when you call the person on the phone can barely speak english
Their one fucken duty, and they can't even do it "Communicate"
They hire people that are willing to sit there -- doesn't matter if they have the skills to help or basic communications skills required to do the job
That is what they all do, it is all about maing as much money as possible and fucking you as much as possible without making it collapse
I can just imagine what it is going to be like in 20 years from now

user92578
11:24 AM
A quick video I made of the new bomb mode!

user92578

Jon
nice stuff man

You should make Duck Mode. :P Just rip off Duck Game

Q: Creating colour spectrum by light flux values

aliI am using radiosity method to compute the inter-reflected light within a room. The room is gridded into small patches and the light flux in lumen is calculated for each. This part is done. Now I want to change the colour of each patch so that the room surfaces show a continuous colour banding co...

This guy

@Tyyppi_77 what are using to make this game ?

user92578
11:28 AM
My own framework built on top of SDL2's everything

user92578
@Jon "The closer the surface to the source of light(ex. the window) the higher the value." Whoa.

@UriPopov Skills

@Tyyppi_77 cool stuff bro.

user92578
thanks!

Jon
I can def write it -- but I would req sample input data
Dude just needs to interpolate his colors based off his values

11:30 AM
@WilliamMariager wew lad nice joke.

user92578
@WilliamMariager so much skills wow

user92578
@Jon lol yeah

Jon
It isn't skills, he is merely lerping everything

@UriPopov I'm not joking though.

Dude seems like that Mohamed guy I tried to help a while back. Sometimes they just cant be helped.

Jon
11:30 AM
Plus it is a game, anyone can write a game, its a GAME! its easy to make

user92578
yes, just ask how to mmorpg and you have a game

user92578
@Jon custom interpolation curves ftw

@Jon He still doesn't ship sample data

user92578
nah but I lerp a lot too

Jon
@NaCl I personally wanted to write it, because it looks like fun
That is why I was asking for fucken input data, lol
I don't want to comment a 3rd time for it

11:32 AM
I can :D

Jon
You should

@Tyyppi_77 was faster

you should beg for his glorious sample data

user92578
I already did yeah

While I was talking about doing it, he did it

Jon
11:32 AM
It isn't really a game dev question either.

user92578
That's kinda true

Guys how do I paste code here I want to share the absolute worst line of code I have ever created in my lifetime.

Line? Preface it with 4 spaces
A few lines: Paste it and press the fixed font button that appears on the right
More lines: Pastebin or equivelant

StartCoroutine(1.0f.Tweeng((u) => { gameObject.transform.parent.parent.gameObject.GetComponent<CanvasGroup>().alpha = u; }, 1f, 0f));

Wait, why is there an extension method on the float class?

11:43 AM
Why not ?

Also if that's the worst line of code you've written you've probably not written much code
@UriPopov because what's the purpose of a float and how does that extension method help a float be a better float

It doesnt i just like how it looks. I was talking about the gameObject.transform.parent.parent.gameObject.GetComponent<CanvasGroup> thing

Jon
Tween G!
and yeah, when i first starting coding javascript way back in the day, I would do a lot of entity.parent.parent.parent.parent.property
Totally legit maintainable code right there.

I just needed a rly lazy way to reach that object. Also I rly hope nobody changes anything in the canvas hierarchy. That would be bad.
StartCoroutine(1.0f.Tweeng((u) => { charSelectionCanvasGroup.alpha = u; }, 1f, 0f));
there much better

@KevinvanderVelden I have to agree, that seems a bit abusive of the extension method functionality.
Why not just new FloatTweengCoroutine(...).
Well, I guess since it's Unity, it's maybe not even an extension method . :P

Jon
11:54 AM
that is good Unity code
One thing that annoys me about unity, is that they camelCase all properties
So if I extend a GameObject... and then I create a bool Enabled;
That is great -- but oh shit, there is also a .enabled property for gameObject I didn't realize

Isn't that unavoidable? A leftover from UnityScript, but fixing it will cause all old projects to fail compiling.

Jon
Now I have Enabled and enabled

I dont get why you would call it abusive. My code I can do what I want with. If I think it looks better and it has the same result why should it be considered bad ?

Jon
If you can do something, it doesn't mean you should. If that is your argument it is pretty weak.

If its about code why the fug not. I'm not hurting anyone. If it has the desired result and performance it shouldn't really matter how you did it tbh

Jon
12:01 PM
If you are happy with it, and you are working alone, whatever.
If you are getting paid to produce code, and are checking in code that doesn't maintain well, then you are a shit coder.

^

@UriPopov maintainability, principle of least surprise etc
Basically what jon said
The responsibility of a float is to store a value, not to interface with unity and do tween related stuff

I'm giving it more responsibility I believe in the humble float. Besides its pretty maintainable the way it is. And the float itself does nothing more than provide its value for the Tween. I read it as tween that thing for this duration.

Jon
It is strange, it seems backwards to me.

@UriPopov which argument is the duration?
Because that's not clear
Is it duration.Tween( callback, min, max )?

12:12 PM
Yeah, apprently.
I guess the clever part is reading it 2f.Tween(...) as two second Tween.

@KevinvanderVelden yep exactly

Well let's ignore the fact that the units aren't specified
Why not make it an extension method of Timespan?

DH.
What a mess, would way better with a proper class to handle that, like Math

Jon
Or why not just get your Tween to do the Tween...
pass the float in... I don't see why you would init a float to call a Tween function on it

@DH. math is kinda a place where instant functions should go. Not good but better than this

Jon
12:14 PM
Super backwards.

DH.
Yeah true, last lib I used had a single class to handle all the Tweens

Honestly that's the only place I'd expect it

Jon
My Tween class does all my tweening

This stuff really invites a factory class I think.

Jon
I can share it with you if you want a lightweight Unity Tween class.

12:16 PM
Tween.StartNew(duration, from, to, callback)

If I was looking for a tween function I'd go for a tween class, then maybe look for an interpolate class

Have StartNew call StartCorutine inside it.
Shorter, cleaner, clearer.

Jon
I do mine with Tween.Update()
A co-routine would be fine

A coroutine would be my go-to until profiling shows it takes a significant chunk of time

Jon
I kinda like to have it Update along with the object it is controlling

12:18 PM
Makes sense

Jon
Benefit is that you can disable or destroy that entity, and the Tween dies with it

Jon
12:36 PM
well that is fucken nice.
127.0.0.1 liveupdate01.asus.com
127.0.0.1 dlcdnet.asus.com
If you have an Asus mobo, best to put this in your hosts file

:o

Jon
The best part is when he is trying to fix the flaw, and being told to fuck off
So basically, if anyone tampers with those XML files in whatever way -- they could flash your bios with any payload they want
I'm thinking the mobo wouldn't allow you to flash without a signed bin
But then you read further down....

but how do they trick the updater remotely?

Jon
you can specify what server to take the file from.

It's plain HTTP
Which of the 5 bazillion man in the middle attacks do you want to use?

Jon
12:48 PM
Yes, and this affects your hardware
this is a huge problem
I was thinking -- if you put those values in your hosts file -- and someone manages to install a WS with payload on your local machine
Could still get your mobo fried
Anyways, as long as you install your own OS and don't use pre-built stuff -- LiveUpdate is more than likely not installed unless you installed it yourself

and still the attack has to target you directly. Its not like it can be done on a mass scale and send out kill payloads to all asus devices. Or am I wrong ?

Jon
depends.
theoretically, they could potentially hijack the update site
there is no SSL certs here.
Who the hell would want to do BIOS updates over unsecured lines?
Why do bios updates even need to be automated???

OK, so that world still doesn't wrap
What you should do, is always have the boat in the center of the screen
wrap the map around as you move
