12:03 AM
Whew, being back at school is rough.

you could use something like this over a regular case

12:41 AM
Hmmm... Only $400... Wonder how much shipping is
Plus, is it a full case? Or do I put the computer into it?
But still thanks for the find. It's bookmarked

3 hours later…
3:25 AM
you put a computer into it
basically it has positive pressure (which is fancy speak for they pump craploads of air into it)

3 hours later…
6:27 AM
that hurts my head :-) superuser.com/questions/376724/how-to-recover-a-stomped-file Trying to unpickle an object that was stomped in a sandpit by a python. Sounds like the start of a childrens book :-)

lol
though sandpit is an interesting name

wow nice. Soluto just told me that Firefox just crashed while I was watching a movie in browser? It never crashed.

Thats odd..

It should have crashed. Doesn't necessarily have to stop playing the movie.

@TomWijsman I was watching IN firefox, and the angel comes up and tells me Firefox went to heaven

6:35 AM
I don't like Soluto as post-mortem though, my crashes show up directly in the Windows Debugger. Since I compiled Firefox it even shows me where in the source it crashed. (:
@studiohack As I said, doesn't necssarily have to stop playing the movie.

I don't have soluto installed unless i actually need to work out load times
I prefer whocrashed for debugging tho

@TomWijsman but the rest of the browser works?

@JourneymanGeek Why not use Process Monitor or XPerf for that?
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't really give much useful information...

@TomWijsman: simpler

@studiohack Most browsers are protected against crashes.

6:37 AM
@TomWijsman huh. interesting

and i usually don't actually worry so much about that. there's only one system i have with boot time wierdness, and she is overdue for a reinstall

@studiohack Google Chrome and Internet Explorer for example, create new processes for plugins and/or tabs.
I don't know about Firefox though, but I've known Flash to crash without it affecting Firefox itself. Because the plugin manager is in a different thread.
@JourneymanGeek Too simple most of the times, gives at best a driver name for BSODs but II don't see how it applies to any type of crash. Or did they include stack traces and the like?

@TomWijsman: at the very least it helps pin down what driver crashed

ahh Just as i figured, I just rearranged it a bit, and Childrens book :-) Mr. pickle has an optimized cousin called the cPickle. cPickle live in Cland, so he is up to 1000 times faster than Mr. pickle. However it does not support subclassing of the Pickler and Unpickler families, because in cPickle these are functions, they do not go to classes
I wonder if there is a market for books that can be understood by programmers, and they can read them to thier kids , while learning :-)

6:55 AM
only if you want to risk your kids getting sick of it, and deciding to live on a mountain as a monk ;p

7:16 AM
yup might make the programmer kinda sick too. . . . Then Ms. Kernal turns all blue and starts speaking in tongues . Only a few members of the church know what Ms. Kernal is saying, they refer to the big bible , and translate what it says to the rest of the fleebles.
Ms. Kernal then leaves a big dump in the computers toilet, picking through all the slag in the dump, you can find what Ms. Kernal ate that made her stomach all upset.

2 hours later…
9:19 AM
Alright, ordered the HTC Titan! Can fetch it tomorrow. Finally getting rid of my silly earlier (smart)phones... (:

@TomWijsman envy

1 hour later…
10:33 AM
@Psycogeek Goes both ways, I haven't been able to take pictures for years. My current has very unrecognizable blurry pictures, the one before that was very of a very low amount of MP. Same for the amount of storage, and so on...

@TomWijsman goes without saying - megapixels do not maketh a good cam
2

@Sathya I know, I've carefully read lots and lots of reviews as well as specifically looked for various examples.
Oh, the irony. The Titan II is being announced today. Luckily it reads:
> The HTC Titan II is expected to become available exclusively from AT&T in the US in the coming months.

yeah I know,
it's exclusive to AT&T in US
doesn't mean it'll not be out for the rest of the world

@Sathya True, I believe other models have had the same exclusive experience but later being released to the rest of the world anyway.

anyways I should congratulate you, not nitpick on stupid findings

10:47 AM
It's kinda annoying that I have the tendency to wait for an infinite time for the better phone.

WP7 too

I wasn't really sold by Nokia's first WP7; while I do believe they (and other brands) can do better. I don't feel like waiting even more months...
Here is a message that dates from a year ago, even before Nokia announced their phones. Go figure how long I've been waiting...
Feb 11 '11 at 12:39, by TomWij
Maybe, but I've never been interested in Nokia, wasted two Sony Ericsson's. Now temporarily using a LG smartphone from someone and I'm waiting for a good WP7 to come to Europe/Belgium.
Hmm, interesting:
> A megapixel is one million tiny colored dots in a photo. It seems logical that more megapixels would mean a sharper photo. In truth, though, it could just mean a terrible photo made of more dots. A camera’s lens, circuitry and sensor — not to mention your mastery of lighting, composition and the camera’s controls — are far more important factors.

some cheap junk (i mean really junk) lists some extravagent pixel ammount for sales, and it will create such picture, but the sencors themselves are not even that quality, they interpolate a lesser pic.
To top it off, after they interpolate say a 3.1megapixel sencor to WOW 12mega pixels :-( they then compress it to death with Jpeg, making it worse than just locking in the pixels that actually existed.
then when they do get a sencor that tight, the light can easily jump registers too. plus the lens(s) collecting the light to begin with, and the needed sensitivity of the chip vrses the ammount of light in existance.
. . . then they compress it to death with jpeg :-)

@Psycogeek Do you mean they do additional compression? Because photos are usually stored in jpeg format.

11:03 AM
Storing in jpeg is great, vrses storing the whole bitmap. its just that many of the camera items, "Fine" or "best" is 70% jpeg, which already is introducing compression artifacts.
IMO, all they ever had to do, was allow the best jpeg mode, with caveats of large files, and poor shot rate. even put it way down in an advanced menu

Ah, yeah. The quality you configure. I would never set it lower than the maximum setting unless I'm running out on space. There are probably other use cases though where one wants to be able to take a lot more photos without necessarily being of high quality...
Pretty stupid if they lock people down on the quality in the software... o_O
@Sathya Well, I do double check rumors to see how much they occur and where. There are some US people having problems with microphone quality for example, because the noise cancellation microphone at the top of the phone is too sensitive and cancels out the actual voice. But it's fixable none-the-less...
And well, there is still warranty/guarantee and repair service.
I wonder about the legality of Chevron, although I won't need it due to the DreamSpark <--> App Hub connection. And considerably, the annual fee for a developer account and being able to publish to the market place is still lower than playing games like WoW. But that's something to check in about two years when I'm done studying...

you must live in EU? they have more laws, about a product being sold actually being capable of doing what it was sold for . (what a unique concept)

@Psycogeek Yes, Belgium. "Not happy? Money back, or buy something different." Depends on the shop...
Although the law does put a minimal amount of time on some products, if not all. I'm not good in all those law rules so I can't tell for sure.
I wonder if there is an electronic version of our law somewhere.

11:18 AM
@TomWijsman I heard one phone owner say, they were going to take back thier phone because of a PITA bug in the phone. Here in the US we could take it back in 14-30 days , but if there is a lot of bugs, that make it a pain, and the time has passed, your on your own.

Apparently there is, great. If I ever need it...
@Psycogeek The store where I bought it lists two months in general. Apparently the product lists 2 year carry-in guarantee.

Here, it is a race :-) get the device home, and test , and fast. :-)
then look up on the web for each bug, and see if its stuck that way

I think carry-in means I can drop/send it at a HTC service center to get it repaired for free (when I didn't cause the damage) within the first two years, dunno...
@Psycogeek Already looked them up so I know what to look for.

@TomWijsman Yes that too. window shopping isnt what it used to be :-)
now its Research shopping

11:49 AM
Thats weird, is the CMD prompt in windows 7 64bit, 64bit or 32? or am i using the wrong one?
My old stuff has been scripting fine in it. but (smartly Ya right) I downloaded the 64bit version of Devcon.exe for scripting, and it tells me it is the wrong machine.

@Psycogeek: The command prompt does not matter.

It doesnt help when any 64bit version of the CMD would have been in the system32 folder :-) and that is the one i am using.

Processes are launched in the same way. There is no difference in input/output...

Yes I figured it would use a 32bit also without complaint support.microsoft.com/kb/311272 I dont have the way to check much of anything yet. 60+ programs installed and i am still blind, and barey operational

Temp\i386> devcon.exe listclass Printer

ROOT\PRINTER\0000 : HP Photosmart C6100 series

11:56 AM
Cool, please tell me what Size the devcon executable is?

You actually need to use the i386 version as the other is specific tot he rare Intel architecture. An Intel processor does not guarantee the Intel architecture, but is actually often using the AMD architecture.
This is what I get running the Ia64:
[Window Title] C:\Users\tomwij\AppData\Local\Temp\ia64\devcon.exe
[Content] C:\Users\tomwij\AppData\Local\Temp\ia64\devcon.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

i have intel?
ohh, special

@Psycogeek: 11/14/2002; 10:32 PM; 55,808; devcon.exe
That is the 32-bit version and it works for me on 64-bit Windows 8.

thanks that is the one that is working, the 90K one , which I thought I was being Smart :-) about downloading doesnt.

@Psycogeek: it is the moment things get complex enough
Its taken me over a month to the point where i can even start to work out what a system build should have. I used to be able to walk into a computer store and do it!

12:09 PM
AFN (away from net) Assuming this works
crud, now i know why that script doesnt work anymore.
It wont disable my lan/nic thing anymore
enable & disable works in the device manager fine.
in the cmd it shows that it knows what device i picked , then says enable/disable failed no devices enabled/diabled

I need to get myself into scripting too. I wish I had a habit writing and using scripts...

12:24 PM
i have no idea WTF I am doing, i just wanted a few buttons to turn some things off. I use Wildcards and parts of the big hairy name with Devcon, and was able to make a simple as can be on/off switch

@Psycogeek There was a time where I used to go manually disable/enable the controllers and devices needed to connect USB devices as wel as my ethernet card.
(Because I optimized it by disabling any device I don't use)
Now I just leave those that I switch on, I wish I knew about the tool you use back these days.

In this one i am not trying to optomise, although other times I had to save huge hunks of memory with one device that sucked up 1Gig for a realtime video buffer.
This one is to stop that net, so i can start the other , and visa versa without 10 steps

On my next installation I'm going to put everything I optimize into a script so I can more easily reinstall without losing it all.
Or just to ensure that my optimizations are still in place...

my computer is in technicolor barf , that is what one of my friends calls it :-)
everything has a button, and stuff is all color coded to excess
even my files are on black background, with differerent colors for different file types. and the computer talks :-)

lol
mine's all black and grey

12:36 PM
stuff pops out of the 3 sides of the monitor, called toolbars, and have every program and utility on it.
then ( i kid you not) nakid dancing ladies come out and announc the weather and news updates, and e-mail.
with text to speech to
I got banned (temporarily) for showing a completely cencored version of my desktop at the other forum

12:50 PM
wait. this is the same person who complains of too much system crud? ;p

it has an off button :-)
I want My stuff in there, not microsofts, all my programs and the XP os trimmed, fit onto a compressed backup image of ~2500meg . and I can fix the system using the image in about 3 minutes. windows 7 is about 2x that, has about 30,000 extra files, that take forever to backup.

1:08 PM
what other options are there for scripting the items in device manager?

Devmgr source code is in the DDK, you could inspect what it does under the hood.
Other than that, AutoIt GUI automation is probably the way to go...
I should really be running a script for automating GUI things. But my mind is stuck on my "Running less when idle results in better UI response and performance".
Don't be surprised to see me launch the Process Monitor just to figure out how to decrease the events count even further...
Just a random example, disabled half of the Event Trace logs in the Performance Monitor.
I haven't quite figured out whether I can disable the others...
Whoa...
Data Collector Set Type Status
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Circular Kernel Context Logger Trace Running
Audio Trace Running
DiagLog Trace Running
EventLog-Application Trace Running
EventLog-DebugChannel Trace Running
Now that's handy, no more manual selection! :)

1:29 PM
...
thats seriously shiny

Ah, I figured out I can even kill more logs, yay.

I had another script fail to work this week, and it was really odd. but mabey clever. I was running a rename to change log-in backgrounds. and also changing the sounds using rename. When I set it to work invisable, the background would no longer rename but the sounds would.

Trying to search for DiagLog is a pain though. Funny typo...
@Psycogeek I had a similar experience when I was trying to schedule a task to run my IRC bouncer on our server, it fails when the task is automatically ran on login but it works when I go and manually execute the task.

erf
desktop sounds wrong
there's a low level whine

The backgrounds were in windows own folders (more protected) and when my script sort of simulated a virus hiding out, it wouldnt touch them.
that is my theory so far.

1:32 PM
it seems linked to load, but i don't recall the fan ever being that loud

@TomWijsman and mabey this is what is occuring here, it has some new level of protection , they forgot to tell anyone about .

@Psycogeek I think in my case its just because there is no user context yet or something like that.
@Psycogeek I don't think so, desktop wallpaper changes can be executed by the user. Have you tried to specify the absolute path?

I always use paths as opposed to cds, let me check

@Psycogeek: How do you exactly change the wallpaper?
Jan 4 at 0:26, by Tom Wijsman
I once found a troll executable that intended to change your desktop background....
Jan 4 at 0:26, by Tom Wijsman
Called this API with code 14, which is SPI_SETDESKWALLPAPER.
I dunno whether that API can be called from a script.

I dont change many of the things, i rename them behind the system, its very very fast . rename C:\Windows\System32\oobe\Info\Backgrounds\backgroundDefault02.jpg backgroundDefault01.jpg

the heck

@Sathya Its the feeling I get when I see that three remaining bounties impose three banners. But getting all your badges again seems even more weird...

A: Booster badge should be golden or easier to achieve

balphaThis is actually already in the works. The Announcer / Booster / Publicist triad will behave like other similar badge groups afterwards, e.g. Nice Answer / Good Answer / Great Answer or Notable Question / Famous Question. In particular: The timeframe will not matter anymore. You still get the F...

I've got two badges:
> You've earned "Announcer" and 1 other badge. See your profile.
Ah, that explains.

that was the first
on second refresh I got this

2:02 PM
look like i am not the only one answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/… (Microsofts non-answers "Devcon doesnt work in windows 7" and why is the 64 bit one not working).

@Sathya Your second thing didn't came through?

@TomWijsman "this" as in the image I uploaded ^^^

What was the first thing then? :D
Oh, the Booster link probably then. I though they were one and the same thing.
@Psycogeek There is no 64-bit version in the MSDN link apart from IA64 which almost nobody has. Does that link provide a 64-bit version (not IA64)?

@TomWijsman first was a publicist badge

@TomWijsman How to programatically disable a device in windows 7 . A) become a programmer
@TomWijsman Well I think i freaking got it. some 80K version, and the first test it worked.
I figured the crud (downloads) they were passing around was the same junk that I had , but it isnt, mabey there was something incorrect, or needing to be compiled or something about the one that MS suplies on their page?

2:12 PM
Dunno.

me neither
ohh, the devcon page for MS does not have Windows 7 specifically on it, so it was different for 7 itself.

Alright, mission for today: Inbox Zero and other organizational matters.
I have like very random things laying around, here is an example where I was trying to categorize the Programmers.SE tags to get more insight on it:

too cool, now my old crusty scripts are working, without any changes , happy day (ok happy moment)

Problem with categorizing like that it takes a very long time. Would love to do it for Super User, but don't have the time for it at the moment.

2:51 PM
@JourneymanGeek Argh, some young kids. The way he types TrueCrypt kinda makes me think my comment was kinda useless as it won't be done properly anyway. If its his own computer TrueCrypt could help solve the issue, but if it's a shared computer he will most likely have to share the password anyway...

also, that won't help
he really needs to educate the sister not to put in ramdom disk ;p

@JourneymanGeek One ear in, other ear out... ^^

what is Dban , is that like D-Con for hard drives ? d-conproducts.com

@Psycogeek If makes it easier to format your computer such that you can't retrieve the data, just boot it with the disk inserted.
It's the soft way of getting rid of all your data in a secure way, the hard way involves magic magnets. :)

no "are you sure" ?

3:06 PM
lol

now I am re-thinking wether the detinator cord should be on the drives now, or only after I suspect that someone wants my data.

actually its pretty hard to accidentally nuke on it

@Psycogeek There is an iteractive mode, or just type autonuke. I guess there are versions though that involve no confirmation at all.

iirc you need to type in autonuke or type in yes or something

But really easy to blame your sister , when you picked the wrong drive ? and you need to find out if there is any hope.

3:08 PM
that sounds more likely

If only he knew, at one time or another we all nuked the wrong drive :-)

If you guys haven't already seen it, this is a nice gif someone on the internet has put a lot of work in. Its in my oldest mail. As those images can be found on the internet I don't think I need to keep the mail.
Hint: File name. ^^

oooohhh, i am awake
i couldnt figure out what it was so damn complicated

3:35 PM

3:47 PM
all that, i hope it comes with a Optional seat, to add to the fun.

3:57 PM
@TomWijsman You know that GIF is tilable. I think I first saw it on ytmnd.com many years ago.

+1 if you remember that guy before you go to watch the video. ^^
And wow, Kayne is such a jerk.
Watch carefully at 00:05. He kinda overreacts to that... o_O
He doesn't even realize that those people wait a whole day to see his concert from the front row.
Also, you might want to lower your volume a bit on that one.

6:54 PM
I spent the last day learning how to use Git and Github.com. Figured out how to clone and pull a repository on my server to effectively "publish" my website. Now I have no excuse to not work on my website. XD

7:27 PM

@TomWijsman From the Win8 dev preview?

@iglvzx No, I just downloaded installed Zune and was doing something else in the meantime.
Nice that it actually checks that you click something... :D

@TomWijsman I see. Looks very Metro

I protected this question. Those 1 rep users didn't really answer the question. Having tons of crap on a fragmented disk slow down the machine is not a malfunction. Or is it?

9:00 PM
Any Chrome users here who could quickly verify a bug for me?

@iglvzx Well I have XD
@DanielBeck Good decision on protecting it.
@TomWijsman Have you seen it's actually connected at the sides? If you put several below/next to each other, they work together :D

9:26 PM
Just received a SMS from +11111111111. o_O
