@KutuluMike i'm not sure most of those numbers are official.
marvel.com doesnt mention them, just the wikia
2
Q: What is the criteria for receiving an official Marvel universe designation (Movies/TV)?

John Smith OptionalThe Marvel Multiverse seems to be inconsistent in its inclusion of officially recognised continuities, or their Universe designation number at least. The wiki could of course be lacking in information, but it appears as though many filmic representations of their characters are yet to be 'offici...

@phantom42 the guy who keeps that "appendix" is the guy who was responsible for putting together their Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe for a really long time.
so it's probably about as official as anything could be.
I know the handbook uses those earth numbers quite frequently.
but it also might not be kept up to date, since I don't think he writes the handbook anymore.

i havent seen an official handbook since the 80s
(havent really looked either)
back when it was a handful of issues in a series

the most recent one I've seen is from 2010
that dude's web site also gets cited in the marvel universe entry on the handbook

interesting

so, good enough for my blog post :)
if everyone just decides to agree with the marvel wikia, they'll become essentially official :)

1:59 AM
marvel wikia has been pretty rock solid in my experience
it's just not official, so i always defer to marvel universe

yeah, I know, but MU is usually crap compared to the wikia

most of the time, yeah. there are some entries that are pretty good.

oh lord, thunderstorm is pissing my dog off.
bbl

yeah, just hit us here

i think the worst of it is past. i hope.
i have one dog that's terrified of thunder, and one that thinks its an invader and tries to scare it off.
im gonna have to watch game of thrones sometime soon, i feel.
or else I'm definitely going to get spoiled

@JackBNimble In comics, they are known as Black Flash. They come as messengers of death. Speedsters always face them when their lives are about to end.

user116211
However, in Rebirth, Barry also did turn to Black Flash annihilating other speedsters.

user116211
But in Arrowverse, Black Flash appearance has been put up by Hunter..... his black suit.... his dark eyes all suggest his appearance is based on Black Flash, the speed-reaper ;)

8:19 AM
A second viewing of Captain America: Civil War cleared up a lot of the issues I had with it on first viewing. What looks like a weak structure at first is actually just part of the subtle misdirection that the Russo Brothers are leaning on throughout, and Zemo may be the most compelling villain in the MCU so far.
Spider-Man is awesome, and despite having limited time in the film does a lot with it, and doesn't just feel like a cameo; obviously, the film could have worked without him, but he ties into the themes of the film in a way that feels natural.
The same is true of Black Panther, who has a much more substantial role and arc that again doesn't just exist to set up his solo film. In fact, the only character that feels a little shoe-horned in is Scott Lang, and that's alleviated somewhat by the set up undertaken in Ant-Man.
It'll be interesting to see how Phase 3 in general reacts to the outcome of Captain America: Civil War; there is a lot of fallout to be dealt with here, an I imagine that either Spider-Man: Homecoming or Black Panther will have to at least acknowledge that before Avengers: Infinity War actually deals with it.
Also, I think it may be the first 5-act superhero film, which is interesting.
All that is spoiler-free, by the way, for anyone concerned about spoilers.

user116211
@DrRDizzle Thanks ;)

10:57 AM
do we have to go over the definition of a cameo again?
from everything we've heard leading up, we knew it wasn't just a cameo.

@phantom42 OK, I'm using the wrong word. My point is that he doesn't feel forced in; it makes sense that he's a part of this story, both narratively and thematically.

gotcha
the story from the russos was that plan A was to have spidey.
which makes you wonder just how long they'd been trying to get that deal

I have no basis for this other than looking at how all the other studios behaved, but I bet they've been trying to get him back from Sony since SM3 "flopped"
it's amazing the list of properties that started rolling back to them starting in 2005. ones I had no idea were even licensed. If I were them I'd be offended that Fox still has F4 :)

@phantom42 I actually don't believe that. He fits into the story, but I wouldn't consider him a vital part of it; it could still work without him. If they didn't get Spider-Man for the film, the only thing affected would be the removal of one short scene, and some fairly minor changes to another.

well, i'm sure that even if it was the plan, they tried to write it so it wouldn't be completely screwed if it didn't pan out and had to reconfigure
didnt the actual announcement come after the start of shooting?

11:14 AM
@phantom42 I would imagine so.

11:47 AM
is there a way to stop peoples comments from showing up in my inbox?

12:01 PM
@KutuluMike i don't think so
i seem to recall sly asking about that too and noone could find a way to make it stop

my ill-advised decision to post to meta continues to haunt me

@KutuluMike What meta-post?

what i really dont get is them saying "post a feature request"
uh.. isnt that what you did?

it was even worse.
"post a feature request showing why the reason is needed"
was the reply to me posting a feature request in which I demostrate that 80% of our custom off-topic reasons are the same thing

meta is for important things now. like comment voting polls about what the best tv show is.

12:24 PM
did we talk about feige's comment about how marvel has creative control over the new spidey movie?

@phantom42 I think so? It's certainly something that I think most people already assumed; if I was Sony, I'd be happy to sit back and cash the cheque at the end.

until now all i had read were vague assumptions
nothing definite on how the new partnership would work

@phantom42 Same, but given that Sony effectively forced Sony Pictures into the deal, I think it was a safe assumption that they were clutching at straws and would agree to Marvel Studios creative control.

12:52 PM
bought my tickets to see cap thursday at 7 in imax choo choo!

nice
all the good seats at our theater were sold out for thursday
we're going saturday afternoon

people around here are like MIDNIGHT RELEASE, and im like, but it comes out at 7 now...
i saw starwars with 10 people in the theater, and walked out to a crowd of 1000s

trying to convince my wife to go see a midnight showing of princess mononoke
dont think it's going to happen

@Himarm Both times I've been to see it, it's been very busy.

just tell her you have a midnight surprise
@DrRDizzle i have literally 6 theaters with in 10 miles, and the demographics of the area means that fast and furious sells out, but "nerd" movies while doing good are never full theaters
only avatar was sold out opening night that i can remember around here. and like i said the last 5 fast and furious movies

1:04 PM
@Himarm The popularity of the Fast & Furious movies will never cease to amaze me.

the area i live is about 50 percent black/hispanic 25% white over 65, and then the last 25 % white 1-64 lol its a super weird mix, 10 am movies sell out all the time to seniors

james wan is denying rumors about dropping out of aquaman
said he's just been busy in post

@DrRDizzle fancy tricked out cars are a thing were i live, so it makes sense to me at least why fast and furious sells good around me

btw. if you guys were thinking of picking up the new rob zombie album, don't.
seriously, it's terrible.
the only decent-ish song there is a ripoff of winona's got a big brown beaver
like.. i'm amazed he hasn't been sued for it

i dont get why people keep getting sue'd for music that ripped off, you call your agent, they call whoevers music your sampling and send them a check, and everyone is cool
ever since vanilla ice, musicians should have learned

1:13 PM
often times you have to sue to get the check
and the proper credit

@phantom42 Google "Axis of Awesome 4 Chords" and give that a listen.
Music is the most stolen, copied, plagiarised thing in the world, and that's fine.
Anyone who sues another musciain for plagiarism is probably a hypocrite.

as someone who is married to an artist and is friends with almost exclusively artists, that's a load of bullshit.

@DrRDizzle it just seems to me since you know your gana get sue'd eventually why not just recognize itup front,

@phantom42 Should have clarified, I meant musician.
There are only so many chords. You can only arrange them in so many ways.
As such, a lot of music sounds the same when compared to one another.
That's fine.

there's a difference between using the same chord progression and the same chord progression + rhythm + cadence, etc
^^ (warning: nsfw lyrics. also, not good)

1:19 PM
@phantom42 Well there are only so many time signatures too, and 4/4 is easily the most common. No matter what song you write, it's probably going to sound at least similar to something else at this point.

when someone is stealing a song its obvious, there the ones getting sues, like vanilla ice, its obvious for everyone he litterally cut and pasted part of the queen song into his.

2:08 PM
I finally got caught up on AoS. They have successfully wiped out Hydra for like the 4th time now.

well it is a hydra

So five heads total?

unlimited

They amusingly said "We've cut off the head of Hydra"
Which I immediately thought "two more will take its place!"

@DrRDizzle oddly enough, I get the impression that the spider-man deal is roughly similar to the hulk deal: marvel makes the movie and sony distributes it and get $$$
yet that's -- they say -- the whole reason they won't make another Hulk movie
oh ffs.
@phantom42 i just accidentally watched a clip from the last OUAT and it had Pan in it.

2:24 PM
@KutuluMike Well, they can use Hulk as a character regardless of if they make further solo films. They can't do that with Spider-Man.

true

Also, Spider-Man is the most valuable superhero ever when it comes to merchandise. You'll never guess who owns all merchandising rights when it comes to Spider-Man?
(Spoiler-alert: It's Disney)

disney owns every thing important
next disney will buy out apple

That's a really interesting article. It seems that Marvel Studios had some level of control over Spider-Man as a franchise until they swapped that for the merchandising rights when The Amazing Spider-Man was set to be released.
Which means that Sony gave away the rights to profit from merchandise on the most valuable superhero ever in exchange for creative control that lasted for a total of 4 years, 2 films and 1 failed franchise.
Ouch.

disney owns espn too what?

2:39 PM
Actually, I may have read that article wrong; could be that Marvel Studios took home a percentage of profits from Spider-Man movies, and that is what was swapped for merchandising rights?
Either way, the clear benefactor here is Disney.

marvel owns curious george toys
thats super weird
Marvel Toys (formerly Toy Biz and Charan Toys) was a toy division of Marvel Entertainment. ToyBiz originated in Montreal, Quebec as Charan Industries's American brand. Reincorporated in 1988, ToyBiz became an American firm. It became a major producer of Marvel character toys and partially owned by Ronald O. Perelman's Marvel Entertainment Group in 1993. == History == === Canadian company === ToyBiz's original forerunner was a Canadian company, Chantex, Inc., started in the late 1800s. Started by the Zuckerman family, the grandson, Sol Zuckerman, grew the business in 1961 from $.16 milli...
and lord of the rings
wow disney
even has a big chunk of LotR lolol

@DrRDizzle from my research into my upcoming blog post, back when Ari Avad was running the company he had a lot of direct control over the marvel properties.
he obviously had EP credits on all of those movies, but I found a ton of quotes from sony and fox and newline about those early movies where they talked about his vision for the characters and such.

Disney also owns your house.

their original plan was to have Marvel Studios make all the movies and have the distributors just fund them, which I believe they did with Blade and Blade 2
it's hard to tell from just the credits who actually had control over what.
e.g. these are the Blade credits from IMDB:
Production Companies
Amen Ra Films
Imaginary Forces
Marvel Enterprises
New Line Cinema

@KutuluMike Well, that's further confused by the fact that Avi Arad used to work for Marvel Studios, but left in order to work for Sony Pictures.
And I don't know when that happened. Some time after Iron Man went into production for sure, but beyond that?

2:47 PM
he left marvel in 2006.

@KutuluMike Weird; he's credited on Iron Man.
Oh, and The Incredible Hulk.

well, he was involved in the whole decision to start the MCU.
they were planning for a while.
so long that they actually got 3-4 licenses back between "pitch" and "start filming"

I heard he left because he didn't think it would work. Egg on face.

ah.
wikipedia says he has a production deal w/ Marvel but under his own studio
he probably worked an EP credit deal with them before he left.
when Marvel first made their deal w/ Paramount to make their own movies, they did not own the licenses for Black Widow, Thor, Black Panther, or Hulk
the original "10 picture deal" was for:
> Marvel characters set to join Captain America in the movies are the Avengers, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Cloak & Dagger, Dr. Strange, Hawkeye, Power Pack and Shang-Chi.
i guess black panther came back earlier than I thought.
ah. they got Black Panther back in 2005, just before this plan came together.

3:27 PM
@KutuluMike Wow. It took them eleven years to actually use him.

4:15 PM
agent carter's ratings are very not good, I won't be surprised at all if they don't bring it back again
they've already cancelled one show that had better ratings
@phantom42 that article appears to be missing some important sentence fragment.
> Meanwhile, network hopes for the series set to star Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood as their "AoS" agents Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter.

1 hour later…
5:29 PM
caveat: that's from a birth.movies.death report, which apparently doesn't have the best track record
BMD also reporting, unsurprisingly, that Snyder and WB are not getting along very well during the Justice League shooting

5:56 PM
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......................

@KutuluMike there was another article today saying that it's bs. And wan specifically mentioned BMD as being wrong.

not surprising, TBH. I didn't realize they were the source when I first posted it.
aren't they the same ones that claimed Suicide Squad was getting a comedy upgrade and the director came out and called BS on them?

i thought they were half right on suicide squad

apparently they are doing reshoots but the director claims it was routine pick-up stuff, I think.

I thought he said it was more action pickups

6:06 PM
"I wouldn’t say we’re going back to make it funnier. There’s some additional action stuff that we’ve been doing, which is really dope."
its one of the actors that said that
i cant find the director commenting

6:19 PM
Finally started watching Daredevil season 2

huh, BMD apparently got one right
> “Birth.Movies.Death is reporting that there’s a lot of tension between the executives at Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder, who is currently filming Justice League in the UK. I can confirm that I’ve been hearing that as well.”

well warner bro's is prob pissed their movie got mocked to hell, by not just the dr rizzles of the world this time

#SuicideSquad “reshoots for humor” is silly. When a studio loves your movie and asks what else you want, go for it! #ThanksWB #moreaction

@KutuluMike Birth.Movies.Death has a great track record, it's my go-to site.

has "tension between director and studio" ever turned out well for a movie?
@DrRDizzle they've apparently been wrong rather frequently as of late.
they got a suicide squad story wrong and an aquaman story wrong

6:25 PM
@KutuluMike They've had scoops denied, but only by people they are "scooping on".
@KutuluMike They never even ran an Aquaman story - Devin tweeted the "keep your eyes on Atlantis".

> According to multiple, reliable sources James Wan is feeling a tremendous amount of trepidation about Aquaman.
^-- Aquaman story.

@KutuluMike That's not from his site

Dizzle is operating BMD in disguise

Just want to repeat: I never said Wan was leaving AQUAMAN. https://t.co/ylhLgHB3ha

6:28 PM
He is marvel's secret agent of destruction ;p

@DrRDizzle then he's either lying or he's posting to his own site in his sleep.

@KutuluMike Or he is saving his ass by lying again

or he's being incredibly pedantic and weasely.
he never said Wan was "leaving".
he said he was "experiencing trepedation" and "decide if he needs that hassle."

Devin actually complained about people taking his article as confirmation Wan was definitely leaving. He called it irresposible.
This was a really irresponsibly aggregated story. https://twitter.com/neligahn/status/726966569520234496

Devin is being a prick.
he's pulling the Fox News stunt.

6:30 PM
Also;
BTW had a 4th source w/in WB tell me that SUICIDE SQUAD reshoots greatly changed the tone. Described previous version as like SEVEN.

"I never said Hillary killed anyone. I merely asked if it was possibly she killed anyone."

Double BTW: THIS is the first SUICIDE SQUAD trailer. This tone is closer to what the movie was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLLQK9la6Go

id believe that suicide squad got some tonal changes
it makes sense looking at the way the trailers came out

He reported that Wan was considering his options in light of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice failing. That's probably true.

and the logo

6:31 PM
if you don't want people to take your article as an indication that a director leaving, don't make the first line of your article "THE FLASH loses a director. Will more filmmakers leave?"

@KutuluMike But that's literally the question the article is asking.

irrelevant.
that's irresponsible journalism.
unless you have reason to believe it might happen.
"Could Marvel be selling off all their movie rights to Fox and going bankrupt?"

@KutuluMike Which he clearly did.
"According to multiple, reliable sources James Wan is feeling a tremendous amount of trepidation about Aquaman. Fast 7 was a very difficult process for him, even without Paul Walker's tragic death, and James Wan doesn't really need Aquaman. With The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out (which he produced), Wan will be owning WB's summer slate, bringing in a lot of money with movies that cost a fraction of Aquaman. Aquaman needs Wan, and right now Wan is trying to decide if he needs that hassle."

either 1) you thought a director was leaving and wanted people to interpret your story that way, and now you're whining because that happened, or 2) you didn't think a director was leaving and your title was clickbait.

That doesn't mean "Wan is leaving". It means "Wan might leave".
Neither of those is true. He's reporting on things he heard.

6:33 PM
otherwise there is no story
"a director is deciding what movies he wants to work on" is not news.

@KutuluMike It is if that director is considering leaving a project he was already attached to, regardless of how that decision ended up.

no. it's rumormongering.
"some people told me he might be thinking that maybe he doesn't wanna do this" is not a story.

@KutuluMike So if Wan does end up leaving, that story holds no value?

"he told someone close to him he wants to quit" is a story.

"According to multiple, reliable sources James Wan is feeling a tremendous amount of trepidation about Aquaman."

6:36 PM
that's not a story.

Clearly, Devin believed he may quit. The story was written in good faith.

that's fine. then his tweet is a lie.

Wan already made his mouth shut by his twitter pic
@DrRDizzle Good faith....meh

Please, there's absolutely no need to attack Devin, or anyone.
That's James Wan, btw.

of course it is, he's not going to create bad PR for himself by attacking a journalist.

6:38 PM
@DrRDizzle He is trying to save someone’s ass getting kicked , good man ;)

the guy wrote a story that turned out to be wrong. fine. it happens. man up. don't go on twitter and complain that people misinterpreted your story by claiming it says exactly what it says.

@KutuluMike He's also not going to go the effort of defending someone who reported baseless rumours about him. If anything, him defending Devin is evidence that he WAS considering leaving, or at least uncertain about his future with Warner Bros.

uh huh.

because there's absolutely no way WB told him not to piss off the press

6:40 PM
@KutuluMike He didn't have to tweet about it. The fact that he did - in support of the journalist in question, no less - is a good indicator that the article was based in reality.

unlike this conversation, apparently.

@KutuluMike I doubt James Wan will saying anything about this conversation, to be honest.

@KutuluMike i dont know if it turned out better, but ant-man's final product was good
granted, that tension was dealt with before shooting

right. i assume that tension during shooting is most likely over the stuff being shot.

3 hours later…
10:07 PM
@KutuluMike are we calling bloggers "journalists" now?

@phantom42, are there other types of "journalists" anymore?

@phantom42 would you consider BMD a blog, not a news site?
does anyone else write for it?

Can i consider BMD....meh

one of those millenial "news sites". these blogs that want to be considered news, but never have the quality or integrity to be called journalists
rushing to publish every unsubstantiated rumor to get clicks
i mean, at least it's not buzzfeed or moviepilot

I get my news from 9gag

10:26 PM
huffington post, the definitive source for poorly sourced material.

10:41 PM
@ryan havnt seen you around in a while, hows it going

does TMNT count as a comic book movie?

dont see why not
it was a comic first
also, we're not very strict.
since keen left us, at least

... pissing me off here.
guess we can take civil war off the list in a few days

11:46 PM
@Himarm seemed like things went pretty bonkers around here after that election... plus I've just been busy with a baby and trying to finish this massive 10 month long project I've had at work.

@ryan hahayeh, all the cool people hang out here, the drama has pretty much gone away, but thats back in mos

Oh and now wife and I are trying to buy a new house
