4:03 PM
fire red was more or less a remake of red with added features

oh oops, sorry, went away to get lunch for a bit there

lol

@JonathanAllan @JonathanAllan depends! I was in some bands, but I also write music mostly for my own enjoyment. The stuff I write for myself tends toward bleepy bloopy stuff, since I write it all in Logic and I hate the sound of a lot of synthesized instruments

oops, I accidentally walked to a food establishment

haha nah I just tend to walk away from chats without mentioning that I'm afk
(when I say "synthesized instruments", I just mean horns/strings/etc being faked by a computer)

4:07 PM
Ahhh, I listen to a lot of electronic music

lol, Matt

but mostly not trying to replicate existing instruments
I like bleepy bloopy
I lke droney too
I have three tracks on soundcloud too

bleepy bloopy ... you mean chiptune

no idea
u mean like modded speak n spell or something?

my biggest problem with writing music is that I have very few finished pieces, because I need an editor. I need someone to say "hey. stop eqing that track and move on"

4:11 PM
heh
can I listen?

I don't remember where it came from but that reminds me of a quote
something like, "an artist never finishes a work. He simply gives up working on it."

@JonathanAllan maybe later! I am weird about linking my soundcloud here, but I may take something from it and upload it to one of my domains

Yeah, that's me, Matt

@Matt I have to force myself to do that sometimes

fair enough man

4:12 PM
Though I wouldn't claim to be an artist by any stretch of the imagination, personally.

but you are

I consider myself a composer - both in art and music.

music is art, and by creating it, you are an artist by definition

I am https://soundcloud.com/jonathan-allan-1 - I don't really rate myself, but I enjoy

4:13 PM
I posted some stuff here a while back, but none of it was really a "finished piece" so much as some weird stuff that came out of playing with arpeggiators and transformers in logic

Yeah, I didn't really have a choice but to post my soundcloud, recently, on a puzzle.

oh really bleepy bloopy :)

I couldn't think of a better way to put a sound file in a puzzle.
(Dropbox, like some have used, it out of the question, imo)

oh I would just Google Drive it :p

Yeah, it's just bandwidth issues, same with dropbox
Also, q_a

4:15 PM
Not too bothered about keeping private though

You probably enjoy playing with a theramin?
Theremin

Apr 13 at 22:50, by question_asker
http://genuine.website/arpy/arpeg1.mp3 http://genuine.website/arpy/arpeg2.mp3 http://genuine.website/arpy/chill.mp3

Hmm - I need to use the theremin, on my phone, to entertain my kids - I hadn't thought of that

I would love to play with a theremin!

There's several semi-decent theremin apps for Android

4:16 PM
pretty :)

OK one of those is a tiny bit more structured than the others - but I liked the way that some of the stuff in the weird ones "accidentally" turned out

I love when portions of music accidentally resonate nicely
I have that in one of my songs - I was listening to it and went: "Well - didn't mean to do that, but I really like it"

I built a browser theremin using leap motion

happy accidents :)
@question_asker it's fun stuff :)

yeah - there's one piece of mine (that, if I had millions of dollars to throw around, I would absolutely get an orchestra to record) that I wrote in a not-exactly-programmatic-but-sort -of way

4:19 PM
v different to the bleeps & bloops in my stuff

where I would write certain parts, and then chop them up and move the pieces around - sometimes I would "fix" stuff that didn't quite work, but other times I left stuff as-is
I bookmarked your soundcloud and I will listen when I get home later (where I actually have sound I can use)

is that just one sunglass?
like a sunglass monocle?

eyepatch

oh heh B)

4:21 PM
b) ARRR

too used to poker room where it replaces with an emoticon regardless

Looks like squinty eyed guy with his eyes twisted to the left

(irregardless :p)
ARRRR
chill is pretty complete

oi!

4:22 PM
Yeah, the music that you guys posted is the reason I don't generally share mine, though

chill (which was just a lazy name I gave to it when uploading) is as complete as it's going to get

My judgement is, if people feel like this music is incomplete, not great, then I don't want them to hear mine. LoL

most of my stuff is fairly short

I tend to do game music or gameloop music, lately, so mine's really short

well I feel mine is complete, but not amazing :)

4:22 PM
That piece I used in the puzzle was one of my gamemusic loops
But hardly decent

my brother writes music that's more conventionally structured - I'm jealous of his ability to do that haha

It just happened to be the right duration

@Khale_Kitha yeah, a lot of my stuff is basically like "ok here's a drumbeat. ok here's a bassline. ok here's a synth or guitar or something. ok now all of that stuff will just repeat forever"
so I can make it long, but it doesn't go too many different places

Yeah, my problem is that the drumbeat is in my head, and I sometimes forget to put it on paper.

Heh, well mine are all remixes, which makes it easier to be more complete I guess
I have many other more experimantal pieces

4:24 PM
haha, I tend to actually have the opposite problem - I'll put a drumbeat down just to have something there, and then forget to change it

I find the drums the easiest bit :)

that was an unintentional harmony
My longer songs, I only have clips up online

(@Khale_Kitha: bookmark'd)

oh right, you can't hear it

4:26 PM
listening

probably not really worth the bookmark
I'll enjoy my music more once I can afford NotePerformer

drums are usually fairly easy for me, but sometimes I get hung up on getting exactly the right sound for something or getting exactly the right rhythm or fill for a section

This is like proper music :D

I'll upload my "most famous" to my domain tonight and link it in here

This one is one of my more favorite game music pieces, though
You'd probably like it, Jon
There's a few places where I'd like to improve it with a sound bend, though.

4:28 PM
while we're sharing
idr where the name came from
maybe javascript

nice, though, Matt
Yeah, this is actual music that could be put somewhere
I don't have anything like that.
Which is disappointing
This was created via loops, though, but that often turns out really well for modern music.
I had a lot of fun in Garage Band with loops.
I have/had a collection of loops that I used to play with, previously.
But I don't remember where they went - I used...

there's one piece I really wanted to finish and put up
because it sounded really good

Acid
...the software, not the drug :P

but it was all made from stems that I'd gotten from a couple of "remix contests"

Yeah, I stopped working with Acid because I didn't reallly have a good source of fresh loops.

4:31 PM
and I couldn't remember what band some of them were from, so I didn't want to post it and get sued for copyright violation or whatever

Yeah, all of mine were given to me with no clue to the source, so I couldn't use them
Nice Tetris distortion mix, Matt.

Matt you could def sell some of this
If the loops are yours / open

I could easily find a place for the Apple song in a game.
At least 5 places come to mind, haha

oh hahahaah

Though I am interested what you used to for the sound/quality on it.

4:33 PM
there's one thing I wrote, which was like a four-measure repeated thing, that was very square-wavey/videogamey
and it was cool, but short, so I didn't think much about it

it was all sequenced in logic
void has the only loop samples in it
I sequenced the drums for tetris

and then I was watching a youtube about... something to do with videogames, and realized that there's apparently a metal gear game with an almost identical part in the music

apple eater was for a game my friends made ... dunno if it's still on the play store, or if they even put the music in it

lol
I'm mostly interested in what you used to make it, because I like the style and would like to do something similar, if you didn't mind.

4:35 PM
it was a silly 60 second game, so I made a silly 60 second ditty, inspired by bubble bobble

hehehe

it's just a software instrument in logic

(also there's a musical phrase in one of my songs that I found out sounds too much like the 'pop some tags' line in that macklemore song)

Ahh, okay
It's gonna happen, q_a
You can't help but have pieces of things you've heard in segments when they stick in your head, because they fit into certain motifs, and your head understands that.

(sorry for talking about myself so much - I can't listen to the stuff y'all posted or else I'd be talking about that :) )
yeah

4:37 PM
quick demise - very good

Panhandles for $130 to get NotePerformer lol

I don't even know if I'd heard that song at the time I wrote the thing, but I did the research and I know the song existed before I wrote mine.

those are just the things that I've stopped working on that I'm comfortable publishing
it's literally the tip of the iceberg

Was intended to be a normal RPG fight scene, Jon

also, back on my kanto puzzle, all the pokemon have been identified

4:37 PM
Hah, nice

yeah I don't really play games, but they all sound like they would be good fits

And, obviously, the one before that was similar

I used to when I was young
I had a spectrum 128 - that may age me :p

Hehe - not one I had, but I had similar
I wish I could remember the name of this one line-art device that my grandparents kept for me, when I was young.
But I've never been able to find it again
They don't remember.

brb lunch

4:40 PM
ok

4:54 PM
oh my god I want to do that circular crossword but I can't
the only way to do it is print it out :((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

phone?

Same thing on the pirate water one, I think q_a
manshu says: Which puzzle, q_a?
:P

lol

Q: Circular crossword

GentlePurpleRainAfter solving the following crossword, you'll find five letters that stand out from the rest. Combine them to find the solution to this puzzle. Hint: it's something you'll need to succeed at this. 1. Word with wear, take, or stand 2. Roast lightly 3. Cocktail with cognac and orange lique...

for my boy manshu
@JonathanAllan nah I'm on a computer but ... you can't even make an excel sheet out of that :(

you need a better spreadsheet app :p

lol yeah lemme just get finance on that
"hey we need a spreadsheet that does circles. what? for a puzzle, what else?"

5:02 PM
ASAP
We don't know if the letters face in or out / go clockwise anti-clockwise (or both) or how long the wrds should be...
I guess that is intended
wrds LOL

Rofl, q_a
Gentle's puzzles are so unique - I love his ideas.
And his new methods of cryptology

This puzzle reminds me of the spinner on the edge of a starchart I once had.
I assume that some of these words, overlap, which is the genius of the whole thing.
They cross, laterally.

yes for sure

....literally laterally

5:12 PM
I think maybe both ways
some go one way and some go the other

huh
maybe so

directionally
cw / anti-cw

the problem, though, with this puzzle...

prob how the 5 letters stand out?

Is that due to its nature, there's absolutely no way to know how many letters are in each clue.
Which may make it hard to not have broad guesses, until it's solved.

5:13 PM
no, like I said, I think it's intentional

Certainly going to try, though

makes it tough

No, right - definitely intentional.

petrol measure - in Canada, do they use gallons??
we use litres
the clues are not cryptic

liter, litre, gallon - no idea about Canada
why Canada?

5:15 PM
so you dont really know for many of them which of the hundreds of possibilities it could be until you have some

Right

Canada is where GPR is

since it's quick I'm looking for clues which are uniquely solvable

This puzzle could benefit from Stormboard.com so that we could collaborate possible clue answers, lol
I just have no good way to take notes on this without using my dry erase board
Potentials:
1. Down
4. MPH, KPH
6. Tan
9. Lack

5:21 PM
OK I don't know what stormboard is but I see a website starting with 'storm' and assume it's a white supremacy site

4 no way

1 could also be Off

it's a brainstorm collaboration site

they are speeds no accn

I said "out" for 1

5:21 PM
*not

perhaps, jon

The clues have so many potentials with these broad definitions, and no letter limit, so it's going to be tough.

yeah why I waslooking for uniques

Clearly, the puzzle isn't broad, but each clue is
Yeah

5:22 PM
Even a few possibilities for the island

10 has a really large number of possibilities
Well I'm relatively sure that 18 is Slept

the cocktail is a sidecar

or Retired

yes was gonna say retired

20 may be Strikes

5:23 PM
(probably a sidecar, I should say)

I was going to look up the mix, but figured someone else knew it

maybe some clues will be two different words, so one of the possibilities clockwise, and another counter clockwise

12. Disc, Disk, Medium, and a number of others

right
that was my assumption

That certainly complicates things, if true

5:24 PM
5 is probably Pierre (saint-pierre)

was that these necessarily will have to be - not necessarily palindromic - readable in two directions

Though not necessarily
It's perfectly reasonable to assume that the word is readable in only one direction, but overlaps with words from another clue in that direction only
No way to really know

I think some go cw and others acw and where we see a letter in both directions will be our 5 letters, but just guessing

@Khale_Kitha yeah, good point, I take that back

(Funny, Jon - I'm not used to the term Anti-clockwise, so that took me a second)

5:27 PM
oh?
oh counter
^^
22 mountain?

@JonathanAllan Yeah
perhaps @mountain
or peak
or notfalling :P

(Y)
lol
summit

yeah

maybe elohell

the what now?

5:29 PM
gaming term lol
climbing out of ELO hell

LoL
Um...
That wasn't meant to be a double entendre
hahahaha

haha
20: jabs, but the J makes things awkward

yeah prolly strikes

yeah, a jab doesn't tend to be sharp
except verbally :)

back

5:33 PM
wb
We're working on trying to wrap our circular puzzle around these heads.

huh?
oh the circular crossword

Hehe, I'm being intentionally confusing, because so is this puzzle =D

sounds a bit like a pangalaticgargleblaster

almost

hah

5:35 PM
that's like getting your brain smashed out by a lemon wrapped around a brick

Someone get this babel fish out of my ear!

or similar

Or a brick wrapped 'round a lemon.

gold brick I think

right

5:36 PM
Lemonade turned to ice in a brick-shaped mold.

it looks like the guys who named all the pokemon left off with the pokedex numbers
with no idea what to do from there

Yeah, was just looking at that
no idea, either

:/

Originally started to consider an encryption with the numbers, but...
since the numbers never repeat, there's not much language that can be pulled out of it

see, every time there's a sequence of numbers, there's like a set few things that always get tried on them

5:40 PM
ive tried going down the list a number of steps equal to the pokedex number, but ended up in a loop, so dont think thats it

taking the number of steps hint very literally, I see ;)

No idea what that means, btw, Matt. :)
People try to find a normal sequence, they try turning it to hex, etc - but those don't help

what else do they try?

Not a clue what other people try :)

do you want another hint?
or an explanation of an existing hint, perhaps?
or shall I just leave more time

5:45 PM
i'm not sure how quickly puzzles are forgotten and left behind here, but i think you can give it more time

oh good
so ... this circular crossword ... is hardly a crossword

They cross, laterally
And bi-directionally, it appears

so, I think 1. is the word "down"

Yeah, that was my thought, though others have come up with out and off

and it goes both ways?

5:47 PM
We're not sure - it might go both, or it might just go one
But likely they don't all go the same direction

oh.
wow

Yeah, and without letter limits - it's tough!

okay ... I'm just gonna try to solve some clues
and try to find some overlaps

Rats
I tried putting the pokemon in number order
but the letters don't say anything useful, hehe
G T C O E W M R S B N R M C C B G V N
oops, that was before I sorted it
C S C B R N N W O V M B G C E R T G M

only two vowels

5:59 PM
puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/31533/the-iris-of-my-eye here's a good example of an "easy" puzzle that doesn't suck
