LOL... Microsoft had a tool called cun* ... reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/o13bm/…

@WilliamHilsum Yeah I saw that. Hehe

Im spending far too much time on reddit now!

@WilliamHilsum Try this userscript. It makes Reddit much easier to use: redditenhancementsuite.com

to be honest, not really had a problem in the slightest with the layout... but... installing it anyway. Thanks

:D

6:10 PM
ehh... weird :/ ... will see if I can get used to it!

The keyboard shortcuts and pagination are why I like using it.

All I do is check the home page and the gaming one.. that's about it! lol

@iglvzx awesome, that's a great one

@studiohack: Actually it's not given that we already have:

Q: Windows Vista/7 Activation FAQ: How do language, version, 64-bit or 32-bit, and source affect ability to install and transfer Windows licenses?

nhinkle We get a lot of questions on Super User about Windows activation and licensing. This question is an attempt to answer the most common questions in one place with a canonical answer. When reinstalling Windows, the following questions often come up: Can I transfer the copy of Windows from my...

I would suggest copying the relevant improving parts over.

@TomWijsman Ah. How should I go about quoting the license in that question?

@TomWijsman shoot, it just hit me that that question was just asked and we probably already have one. sorry @iglvzx, untag the recent one... - we don't need 2

6:31 PM
Got it! Will do
:)

thanks :)

@iglvzx I dunno, it already mentions something about that.
But you can probably extend the quote there or somehow link to an online EULA version using a URL#section link.
@studiohack Yeah, I remember flagging a lot of duplicates that one day. Strange enough I didn't thought about it when walking through the question... But I did remember it once I saw "proposed".

Should I edit the new question and add a "Related: ..." block to the top?

@iglvzx Make it a comment, and if you want, make the Related: part bold so it stands out

@studiohack Thanks.

6:42 PM
sure

Oh boy. I am starting to feel like the question may get too heated.

7:17 PM
Anyone know if there is a quick/easy way to PXE boot Linux? I have a PXE server here and just want a quick GUI shell that I can access my NTFS hard drive on the crashed server and copy across the network...

@WilliamHilsum Happy New Year!

Happy new year

@WilliamHilsum Many GigaBytes and GigaHertz to you in 2012!
@iglvzx Hallo!

man. Executor doesn't support 64-bit OS properly

@Borisyo Hello

7:25 PM
@studiohack Neither Executioner.

nice!

@iglvzx How was holiday?

@Borisyo It was good. Enjoyed the break from school, now currently back in school.

@iglvzx Drank Tequilla? Vodka?

@Borisyo LOL. Just turned 21. Not a fan of Tequila. I enjoy mixed Vodka drinks however.

7:31 PM
@iglvzx Well did not neither
@iglvzx Not a drinker, not a smoker, not addict but only joker.

I don't enjoy any alcohol :P
I like my water and sprite :P

@studiohack I'm partial to 7Up, myself. :P
Beer is too bitter for me. Not a barley guy

@iglvzx 7UP, Sprite, & Squirt are my favs :)

@studiohack You are lucky man:

@Borisyo Haha

7:33 PM
@Boris_yo yuuuucck

@studiohack What?
@iglvzx That rhyme just came into my mind.
@studiohack Squirt?! 0_0
@studiohack Now that is a yuck!

hold on, this is what I mean:
Squirt is a caffeine-free, citrus-flavored, carbonated soft drink, created in 1938 in Phoenix, Arizona. History Squirt was created by Herb Bishop in 1938, after experimenting with a similar citrus drink, Citrus Club. He created a new, carbonated drink which required both less fruit juice and less sugar. Bishop declared that it was the "freshest, most exciting taste in the marketplace". The product received its name because the drink was claimed to "squirt" into one's mouth like a freshly squeezed grapefruit. In 1941, a mascot named "Lil' Squirt" was introduced to the product line'...

@studiohack Oh my!...
@studiohack I knew it!

what?

@studiohack I want that one!

7:36 PM
@Boris_yo have you had it?

@studiohack I knew that i am missing out on something.

lol

@studiohack Never had it.

duuuude , why do you have a chicken Icon , on your backup drive???
It reminds me not to keep all my eggs in one basket :-(

@Psycogeek Who are you referring to? That's funny

7:43 PM
just random

8:08 PM
Crap. I think Firefox 9.0.1 may have memory leak issues. Opened up Firefox and a few minutes later 4GB of RAM was eaten up.

@iglvzx whoa

@studiohack Yeah. Closed Firefox, and the 4GB of RAM was eventually freed back up.

8:22 PM
evenin' all

hey @DMA57361

@DMA57361 Hey

how're we all atm?

Pretty good.
You?

some HDD issues but otherwise good
playing the "backup all the things" game at the moment

8:29 PM
That's always exciting /s

indeed :(
gah, because I don't usually sit and watch it I've never bothered writing a progress readout in to this backup script... it's rather infuriating :/

Oh. That would be frustrating. "Backing up... Please wait an indefinite amount of time."
@DMA57361 I just got admitted to my university's Computer Science major. So, I've been downloading all the Microsoft freebies.
Granted, most of them overlap with what is available through Microsoft DreamSpark

even so, they're nice to have

@iglvzx, MSDNAA?

@soandos Yes.

8:38 PM
If only they had office there...

@soandos My uni provides Windows 7 and Office 2010 through Microsoft Student. Free. IDK if it is because we are in Seattle, near Microsoft. lol

@iglvzx oh nice, I got/have Win7, but had to buy office (got it cheapish thou via some student deal)

@iglvzx, microsoft student is not free...

@iglvzx man....

The license agreement says Microsoft Student. Perhaps my school did bulk licensing or some other partnership with MS
Either way, it definitely helps this poor college student.

8:45 PM
@iglvzx Hi! What can I help you with?

@slhck Hey. I posted this answer before the OP revealed they have Mac OSX Lion:
1
A: Need to reboot wireless router to get internet to work after every restart of my laptop

iglvzxYou should not need to restart your router, unless there is a serious firmware issue. If your router has DHCP enabled, and your client is set to automatically get addresses via DHCP, running the following should do the same thing as restarting the router: Windows: ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig ...

The internet is unclear on the procedure to (1) flush dns, (2) release IP address, (3) renew IP address
It's a piece of cake on Windows

DNS cache should be dscacheutil -flushcache

@slhck Ideally, yes. If it is easier through the GUI, that is fine, too

well, if it's about automating enabling/disabling network, you could probably AppleScript it

@slhck Does the answer you linked still apply to OSX Lion?

8:53 PM
alternatively, sudo ifconfig en1 down; sudo ifconfig en1 up will reset the connection
that should work regardless of the OS X version, the networking hasn't really changed AFAIK

@slhck Thanks! I will include these in my answer.

@iglvzx Sure! I'm pretty sure it's straightforward. Through the GUI there's a button, too.
System Preferences » Network » Advanced… » TCP/IP

Cool. I will include that screenshot as well. With due credit, of course. :)

Haha, sure, thanks :P
@iglvzx Oh, minor correction. dscacheutil doesn't seem to work in Lion. See here for the correct command: How do I flush the DNS cache on a OS X 10.6 machine?

@slhck Ok. Should be good now.
Well, I'm off to class. Cya you all later

9:03 PM
Have fun!

The US Department of Defense has it's own Linux distribution. Totally getting this. spi.dod.mil/lipose.htm

9:51 PM
hi
some mac experts here?

@Roflcoptr Not me

@Roflcoptr ping @slhck or @DanielBeck :)

its not too difficult :D

@studiohack Were you embarassed?

@Boris_yo what are you talking about?

9:52 PM
@studiohack Why you suspended me temporary?

I just connect to a network attached storage to move some files there. But this is really slow because it is not actually moved, but first copied to my computer and then back on the server. Now I want to really move the files directly on the server, bu I cant find a way to do it on my mac

@Boris_yo who says I did? it was flagged as spam/offensive - if a moderator agrees, it kickbans the user for 30 minutes from chat

@studiohack Who was the mod?
Anyway a little sense of humor won't do bad.

Seems someone is running around defacing answers tonight... superuser.com/suggested-edits/7658
I am right in rejecting those ones aren't I?
They're basically comments but absolutely pointless...

10:14 PM
@Borisyo I deleted your comment, it wasn't appropriate for Root Access, nor was it appropriate to make implications like that to another user, whether a normal registered user or a moderator.

10:30 PM
@Roflcoptr What kind of server is that? How are you connecting?
@Mokubai Reject, by all means!

10:46 PM
@slhck it is a synology diskstation 211j and i use finder to connect

Uk'ers, is their a technical term for our electricity socket?... I am trying to find a plug that can be controller by serial (I am sure one must exist) or ideally ethernet... but, not sure what to search for

@Roflcoptr Hm, do you connect via SMB or AFP? (Or more simply, do you have Windows sharing enabled?)

no

As far as I'm concerned, there's no way to circumvent that using SMB sharing

hmm
that's a pitty

10:53 PM
can you SSH into the box?

but thanks!
never tried
mom

that would be the easiest … check if there's an SSH service or something. then you can just use Cyberduck or a similar SFTP client to move the files directly on the NAS
I wonder though why it would take so long. I can move 1 GB files on my NAS pretty fast, takes a few milliseconds.

if I use the web interface than I can do it too this fast

@Mokubai I like how that guy badmouths other users when he's clearly not able to read.

@DanielBeck Do you know if there's a difference in the way SMB and AFP handle file moves?

10:57 PM
I was tempted to make the last reject comment "If the answers are so bad why not post a better one?" or something along those lines
But it was kinda obvious he didn't have one and was just trying them all because he broke his machine somehow

@WilliamHilsum BS 1363?
It's apparently also called "type G"

Thanks - That's it

BS 1363 is a British Standard which specifies the most common type of single-phase AC power plugs and sockets that are used in the United Kingdom. Distinctive characteristics of the system are shutters on the and neutral socket holes, and a fuse in the plug. It has been adopted in many former British overseas territories; Ireland, Malaysia and Singapore have equivalent national standards. BS 1363 was introduced in 1947 as one of the new standards for electrical wiring in the United Kingdom used for post-war reconstruction. The plug replaced the former BS 546 plug, which is still found...

@Roflcoptr I just checked .. moving files is instantaneous with both SMB and AFP on my NAS. It wouldn't make sense to copy the file to your local machine anyway. See: Moving files on samba-connected NAS

Although, I just found one from a different standard... innochain.en.alibaba.com/product/512294409-213077737/… -... wondering about using it with a converter if I can't find a british one

10:59 PM
@slhck No idea.

I just want to be able to ping an online device, and, if it fails, cycle power to it... serial will work, but, will require me to do a bit of tinkering, would rather just have an ethernet/all in one module.

@slhck thanks a lot for the hints

@WilliamHilsum We use those type of remote power cycle devices all the time at work, they tend to have the "kettle" lead connectors that computers connect to and can be accessed via ethernet

@Roflcoptr One question though: Are you moving between multiple shares on the same NAS or is it one mounted share?

11:02 PM
@Mokubai I don't suppose you know makes/models or anything that can help? The only ones that I have seen appear to be quite expensive :/ ... for the price of some of them, I could buy a robot hand and manually pull/plug in the plug... would be more fun as well!
ohhh... cool and thanks... beat me... but... £300 :/ wow...

ah

@slhck it is one mounted share

But yeah, they're kinda expensive
Hence why we use them at work :)

@Roflcoptr Ah... bugger.. that would have explained it ;)

11:04 PM
@WilliamHilsum Though for only £650 you can get 4 power sockets :) blackbox.co.uk/product/pse558ma-uk/4/2/4/Monitoring-Systems/…

Anyway, gotta go, but try the SSH/SFTP solution, that should work!
Good night all!

G'night @slhck

@Mokubai Lol... if it was like £50 ish, I would buy... but, that just seems too much :/ I guess ethernet would always be more expensive as it requires an embedded computer or similar, but, serial ones at least, should be cheap... all it needs is some sort of servo for a switch and the cheapest embedded computer

good night
ill try ssh

that being said... probably is a specialised market and hence why they can charge so much

11:05 PM
thanks

@WilliamHilsum Yeah, tends to be more for server racks and remote stations where manually hitting the reset button costs a good deal of time and effort
Like a 2 hour drive to get to the site just to reboot a machine...
@WilliamHilsum Though one of them does everything you want without any work on your side: "Delayed reboot, per port default power-up state, automatic reboot by PING or port scan timeout (configurable)"

@Mokubai But... for servers, online UPS's usually offer that and are much better priced :/

Never looked into that side of it personally, just know that we've used those power modules.

well... it was exactly what I was looking for, so, thanks!

:D no worries
Anyway, sleepy time

11:28 PM
goodnight!

Hey there people :D
