Wow. The RPi3 can get absurdly hot.
Mar 1 at 21:02, by bwDraco
They really need to have a "⚠ HOT SURFACE" warning on it. Unlike earlier RPi computers, the RPi3 gets hot enough to potentially cause serious burns.
Under more realistic workloads, this shouldn't happen, but you do need to be careful if you're running sustained multithreaded workloads on the Raspberry Pi 3.
97.3 °C. Ouch.
> Don’t poke the chip. It hurts.
rotfl
Could always stick a metal waffle on it.
> While conducting our internal engineering load tests of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, it became evident that the Raspberry Pi 3 REQUIRES heatsinks. Without them, the board will overheat and experience thermal shutdown, corrupt HDMI signal, and video corruption. SoC diode temperatures are also incorrectly reported lower than actual temperatures. A test of 4 threaded sysbench resulted in the imagery below.
> the board will overheat and experience thermal shutdown, corrupt HDMI signal, and video corruption
Wow.
The test mentioned in the Reddit post involved CPU load only.
I dont know why somone wouldnt toss a heatsync on "the hot chips" right from the start, it is after all an experimenters board kind of thing. If a person was going to turn it into a desktop computer.
The LoveRPi test involves both CPU and GPU. They managed to cause a thermal shutdown on their Raspberry Pi 3.
I'm rather surprised and disappointed that this is even possible.
I might just be happy that it can work that hard :-) for that price.
01:30
Snapdragons (and most other phone SoCs) don't normally do this. They'll throttle quite heavily, but it's extremely unusual for them to shut down hard due to overheating.
> The temperature sensor on the BCM2837 becomes inaccurate after 80C. When the SoC has hit 100C, it is still reporting 83C. This prevents the 85C firmware throttling from kicking in.
(emphasis original)
Broadcom: "Oops."
Any idea what the TDP of the BCM2837 is? There seems to be some serious thermal issues with the Raspberry Pi 3.
That this kind of overheating is possible under normal operating conditions (case attached, high ambient temperatures) is really surprising to me.
@Psycogeek It's designed for education first and foremost.
I'll have to get back to work soon. See ya in a bit.
BCM2837 reporting wrong Tjunction is a serious fault.

@bwDraco 362 works fine for me
It's 364 that's bad.
362.00 is the most recent good version, if I'm not mistaken.
no, they released another (third) release in the 364 series, and I think it's fine
I've been running it for a few days and no memory leaks
it's 364.72
Seems to be a hardware configuration-specific issue.

A: Graphical glitches under Windows 10 with up-to-date NVIDIA drivers

bwDracoThe latest NVIDIA graphics drivers as of this writing are broken. There have been quite a few reports of 364 series drivers causing all sorts of graphical issues. Version 364.72, in particular, has been widely reported to cause serious graphical defects and even hardware failure. Your best bet i...

@bwDraco really? are you sure?
That's precisely what the WCCFtech article and user reports say. It's 364.72.
maybe my reference 980 isn't affected, but I'll downgrade to 362 out of an overabundance of caution
Again, appears to be problems with specific hardware configurations. You probably got lucky. I'd recommend that you roll back while you still have a chance.
04:03
it's really cool how the graphics driver infrastructure of Windows can swap out driver versions on a dime
without even a reboot
I've noticed that doing so often messes up 3D applications so you have to restart them, but a reboot isn't necessary
Yup. NVIDIA driver updates have never really needed a reboot for me.
It's the same technology that underpins TDR: timeout detection and recovery.
ok, back on 362 after only a few black screen flickers
the comments on wccftech are horrid enough that I'm reluctant to trust a word they say, though
wccftech has been occasionally accurate about some things, but meh
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ah, I might grab that then.
thanks
@allquixotic 364.51 is supposed to optimise for AotS
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that just happened to me... had to reopen it
Even if a driver did not require a reboot, how wize would it be to wait till the computer crashed (instead) and looses changes made to the registry?
04:19
Not too familiar with this scenario.
> [NVIDIA] has seriously shit the bed on this one
LOL
(From linked Reddit post above.)
Those user reports are pretty scary.
I'm really surprised about how showstopper bugs like this manage to get past NVIDIA's (and even Microsoft WHQL!) QA.
Driver bugs that can wreck the whole system and damage hardware. Just appalling.
> Green artifacts in the bios, post, and windows.
Wow. This driver is somehow corrupting the VBIOS.
@allquixotic, be sure you've actually purged the bad drivers from the machine.
Oh
Explains the graphical artifacts I saw earlier this week during gaming
It's also possible that the driver is bugged in such a fashion that it's commanding the card to drive unsafe voltages through the GPU or is erroneously overclocking them to unsafe clock frequencies.
I'm on 364.51, will go 362.xy
This is why I got DavidPostill to pin that chat message. NVIDIA's made a huge mess here.
Should avoid the entire 364.xy branch.

@bwDraco Miscalculate a voltage value somewhere.
Given how complex some of the calculations are, it's a mistake waiting to happen.
The amount of cards supported by a driver version isn't helping.
Couldn't really find much on this particular issue.
@allquixotic: Remove the 364.72 drivers, then install 362.00. Don't just roll back.
> To reinstall a previous or older NVIDIA graphics driver, do not use the Windows rollback feature. This method will not reliably restore all the previous driver files.

Instead, use the Windows Add and Remove programs to remove the current driver, and then install the older driver using setup.exe.

Severe thunderstorm here. Cable Internet is still holding up but upstream power levels are rising.
I like how I can look under my desk at the voltmeter of my UPS and see if the defense in depth of the power grid is being eroded or not
if during severe weather the power grid is heavily taxed I won't get 119 or 120 volts
I'll get 5 to 10 volts lower than that
btw @Bob, my UPS actually worked... real world test today
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Oh? So the PFC thing wasn't a problem? :P

but my monitor and all peripherals directly plugged into my computer case were fine, and not a single software observable problem happened
> microwave forgot what time it is
rotfl
and my PSU does explicitly support PFC, by the way
@bwDraco pretty common
@bwDraco my microwave's time doubles as a clock.
now it just shows 0:00
05:04
tho my mom insists on microwaves with dials
and heh. I was thinking our new air con remotes would be so much more useful with backlights ;p
the power/temperature buttons are glow in the dark
@Bob when I first looked into UPSes, I ordered one without explicit PFC support. I then refused shipment after they sent the gigantic box out to my house (kinda felt bad), then a few months later I ordered one with PFC (still Cyberpower, just higher-end model). It's line-interactive.
And it works perfectly
I'm still not sure how long the battery would last with the considerable combined load of my peripherals, monitor and beefy computer, but probably on the order of 5 minutes -- just long enough to shut down Windows and say "Shut down anyway" to all the programs that try to keep from being terminated
anyway, for momentary hiccups, battery life is almost irrelevant, and it did just fine for that
and I primarily bought it to address hiccups, since we rarely get actual outages
(but hiccups are common enough during some seasons as to occur multiple times per week)

Is there a workload where I as a consumer would ever need 768 GB (12x64GB, quad-rank modules) of memory?
This is the maximum supported per socket by Xeon E5 v3 and E5 v4.
No
and I don't think there's any 'consumer' or few workstation motherboards that would support that on a single socket.
12 ranks per channel, quad-channel.
(Consumer parts are capped to 4 ranks per channel.)
and don't support rdimms
chances are something with that much ram would be a 2U rackmount
In any case
there's no consumer workload that needs that much ram
even @Bob going crazy on browser tabs ;)
maybe multi terabyte ZFS dedupe file systems
but that's atypical too
in fact I can't think of a situation where with 16gb of ram, I've managed to use all of it
HEDT presently tops out at 128 GB (8x16GB 2R).
07:53
Logically?
I consider 2x16 to be a nice, "going nuts" amount of ram
2x8 is what I'd probably consider for a replacement for nyx
I've not had any workloads that's needed more than 16gb anyway
I donno, run games entirely out of a ram cache?
I have 24 GB (2x8GB+2x4GB) on my laptop. I have had the occasional need to use >16 GB but those are rare situations.
I'm not saying 256kb 16gb is enough for anyone
@bwDraco it comes down to a point of diminishing returns.
and that with a finite budget (or even a less finite budget) there comes a point where I'm better off spending that money elsewhere ;p
Consumer Skylake presently maxes out at 64 GB (4x16GB 2R).
Non-HEDT Haswell is capped to 32 GB (4x8GB 2R).
yup
so's my 3770
I have 2x8 in it
Alright. Good night, folks.

@JourneymanGeek I frequently use that much at work :\
1.5 GB for FF main, 2 GB for FF dev, 1.5-2 GB for NetBeans, 2 GB for the OS, 1-2 GB for PhantomJS...
VS itself takes a fair bit, and VSCode runs on Chromium which also eats a bunch.
Assorted tools eating 200+ MB each...
No real benefit beyond 8 GB for most users.
Typical memory usage for me is about 6-7 GB on a machine with 24 GB.

Q: Can I set LCD/LED or OLED monitor refresh rate to around 0Hz?

Jarek_I think that this would be perfect for reading(like E-ink with backlight), and would lower eye strain in situations where high refresh rate is useless. It would be even better if the refresh rate could change automatically depending on current movement on the screen.
