Is there a reason why really poor "answers" like this one are so common? It's almost always a brand new account giving a non-answer. It seems strange that they have enough of a grasp on the question to give a related response but not enough understanding to realize just how poor their response is. It's not a case of "seems more like a comment."

I guess it's a well-recognized phenomenon based on the review section on the subject, but that still doesn't explain it to me.
@DGS I think it's as simple as a lot of people just don't understand the purpose of the site

It's just an abstract "thing" to them where questions go in one side, answers come out the other.
When I first hit upon the English Language SE, I though, "oh, just another site like Yahoo answers, but probably some answers are relevant, so I'll read".
Except forming both the questions and answers for any of the Stack Exchange sites is going to take more effort than Yahoo Answers.
I can definitely see why people are discussing the homework questions on meta. The sheer quantity is insane.
And because Stack Exchange is so popular, the ones on the chemhelp subreddit are...better.

A mafia is a type of organized crime syndicate whose primary activities are protection racketeering, the arbitration of disputes between criminals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions. Secondary activities may be practiced such as gambling, loan sharking, drug-trafficking, and fraud. The term was originally applied to the Sicilian Mafia, but has since expanded to encompass other organizations of similar methods and purpose, e.g., "the Russian Mafia" or "the Japanese Mafia". The term is applied informally by the press and public; the criminal organizations...

Tsar /zɑːr/ (Old Church Slavonic: ц︢рь (usually written thus with a titlo) or цар, цaрь; also Czar or Tzar in Latin alphabet languages) is a title used to designate certain European Slavic monarchs or supreme rulers. As a system of government in the Tsardom of Russia and Russian Empire, it is known as Tsarist autocracy, or Tsarism. The term is derived from the Latin word Caesar, which was intended to mean "Emperor" in the European medieval sense of the term—a ruler with the same rank as a Roman emperor, with-holding it by the approval of another emperor or a supreme ecclesiastical official (the...

@Hippalectryon This is known as textbook-erratum.

It's not just about the rate of reaction, it's also about how much H2 goes off.
@IͶΔ But if the reaction is faster, more H2 goes off in a given time :D

@Hippalectryon If you don't feel comfortable doing it, don't worry about it.
@Hippalectryon I hope you split that up later...
@pentavalentcarbon I'm totally fine with open sourcing it :-)
@pentavalentcarbon split ?
@Hippalectryon Well, from what I can see in the picture, you have the Python equivalent of a switch statement. Which is fine.
But in your folded code blocks I'm assuming you don't call to helper functions, you have all the dirty work happening right there.
As opposed to handle_img, handle_wiki, handle_table, etc.
Ooooo, typewriter text works.
I'll just make a github ._.
Better than taking screenshots
@Hippalectryon That takes a lot less effort than I thought.
Web programming is so different from what I do.
@pentavalentcarbon some are slightly more complex
14:54
also
!!coffee
@Hippalectryon Yeah, this can definitely be broken up into helper functions but it isn't bad at all.
I'm glad we have a bot. Haters gonna hate.
github.com/gauthierhaas/SE_Bot I'll update it with the relevant code in a moment
15:16
Github isn't working as expected ;_;
@Hippalectryon Why not, do you need help?
I followed their tutorial, made a second branch, edited the readme, made a new pull request, and now it's telling me "This branch has conflicts that must be resolved"
Why is it saying that in the first place ? What caused it ?
It sounds like their guide is setting things up for you contribute to someone else's repository.
We can keep it much simpler for now. Worry about branches and stuff later.
So.
Actually, before I go further, I have to ask, are you controlling this from the website or the command line?
From the website, but I'm downloading their desktop app atm
Ok. To be honest, I'm not sure how to manipulate everything from the website (or the app), I use the terminal. But I can still help.
The reason you're having a conflict (or trying to do something that would result in a merge conflict) is here...
How do I upload a photo to chat?
15:22
Paste the link (ending with an image extension)
oops, wrong one...
I'll use my imgur, one moment
See the little thing with the 2|1 and the gray bar?
This means you have different commits in both your branches, so they've "diverged".
This is often fine and expected.
But, you changed something in the same place in both branches after this point of divergence.
So, Git doesn't know which change you actually want.
I'm looking at the branch comparison, and like you say, there's nothing obviously wrong with trying to do the merge. Git is dumb, and while it can do very complex things sometimes, it can also get confused just as easily.
Any way to fix that from the website ?
I think so.
(by the way, the conflict in the master branch is you've added an extra blank line at the end -_-)
15:33
-.-
See, Git is dumb. Oh well.
I can't see it, because I don't have write access, but if you go to the page where you've submitted your pull request...github.com/gauthierhaas/SE_Bot/pull/1
I bet there's a link above the comment box for resolving it.
It says to use the command line to solve it :(
@Hippalectryon Ok, I don't expect you to do that. Uh, let's see.
@pentavalentcarbon I just deleted the extra line and it's ok
Ok, I was wondering if that was an option.
It also looks like you could do it from the desktop app.
What I would suggest it to mostly do your work in the master branch and not deal with branches, merges, or pull requests.
This is normally a bad idea.
But to start off, it overcomplicates things and doesn't help you get comfortable with Git or GitHub, it just makes things worse in my opinion.

@IͶΔ correct
I mean, the bot has an option to turn the greetings off ._.

The bot is for your own enjoyment. Please do ping me if it makes you feel uncomfortable in any way. Flagging and drama isn't good for anyone's health.

@Hippalectryon People sometimes flag things that annoy them.
17:46
That's what the "ignore this user" command is for
Why they didn't try to communicate instead is beyond me though.
18:11
@IͶΔ I flagged it when it addressed me as it is annoying and noisy to post a message for every new user. I quickly checked meta and saw no post there about it, so I assumed the bot wasn't official or explicitly approved by the community.
@MadScientist I just unpinned the message for the bot. It's just something sorta experimental.
It is unofficial ATM.
@Hipp maybe you do need that "normal users list" thingy?
It shouldn't greet everyone every time they come into chat.
!!greet
You are not in the noGreet list.
@IͶΔ Well, the idea is that all the "normal" users who don't want to see it would just set it on "noGreet", so it would only welcome "real" new users
@Hippalectryon Hmm, what about making greet a user command?
I'd say "!!greet Mr. X" and it will point Mr. X to some stuff.
You are not in the noGreet list.

!!wiki/homoaromaticity
Homoaromaticity, in organic chemistry, refers to a special case of aromaticity in which conjugation is interrupted by a single sp3 hybridized carbon atom. Although this sp3 center disrupts the continuous overlap of p-orbitals, traditionally thought to be a requirement for aromaticity, considerable thermodynamic stability and many of the spectroscopic, magnetic, and chemical properties associated with aromatic compounds are still observed for such compounds. This formal discontinuity is apparently bridged by p-orbital overlap, maintaining a contiguous cycle of π electrons that is responsible for...

The green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a protein composed of 238 amino acid residues (26.9 kDa) that exhibits bright green fluorescence when exposed to light in the blue to ultraviolet range. Although many other marine organisms have similar green fluorescent proteins, GFP traditionally refers to the protein first isolated from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. The GFP from A. victoria has a major excitation peak at a wavelength of 395 nm and a minor one at 475 nm. Its emission peak is at 509 nm, which is in the lower green portion of the visible spectrum.
