12:05 AM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Ducati asked if I finished the '28 Sport Coupe. I was just saying that I am getting egged on to bring the Camaro into the shop before the rod comes back in lol

@JonathanMusso - Forgive me ... I'm easily confused.

gents have a goodnight

Night Darth

2 hours later…
2:08 AM
Theoretically, I should be able to install coilovers on my own with a fairly basic set of tools, correct? As opposed to me having to put the springs on myself, which I can't do, because I dont have the squeezy spring thing that people have in YouTube videos about changing struts.

2 hours later…
4:22 AM
@JasonC If you can teleport yourself, car and coilovers into a YouTube video, you'll have access to a spring compressor. Problem solved :D

2 hours later…
6:18 AM
@Zaid True. Or I could just grab the tools and teleport back out. That'd make for an interesting video.

7 hours later…
1:05 PM
@JasonC just so you know, spring compressors are not that expensive to purchase or rent.

2 hours later…
3:19 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Haha all good man

1 hour later…
4:39 PM
@BobCross - I'll second that ... as long as you're talking about valve spring compressors ... oh, you're talking about shock/spring compressors ... those aren't expensive either.

Afternoon all - happy Sunday

YO! Rory :D

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 wish I had my bike back on the road now - this weekend has been perfect weather. Sunny, warm, dry - absolutely beautiful
never mind ;-/

Haha! They are calling for a touch of snow here today ... it's down in the low 40'sF
I'm sure the trees are going crazy, lol

Afternoon
Snow, NO!!!

5:18 PM
@JonathanMusso seriously. I'm not putting the snow tires back on for a one day storm.

6:13 PM
edits away, lol
who is the mod for mechanics??

Bob Cross

this user asked the same question twice: mechanics.stackexchange.com/users/15845/daniel

@Darth_Vader - Don't change "tyre" or "tyres" for tire.

but both questions are unclear to me.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 oh, whoops, lol

It is still english and most will understand it.
Just like "litre" for "liter" ... both are perfectly acceptable.

6:18 PM
ah ok, we had that issue at GD.SE in regards to colour

The site is english based, but as long as it is an accepted form of english, there's no issue. There is a synonym for tyre -> tire in the tags, but that's only to keep them inside the same tag.
@Darth_Vader Exactly
It is completely understandable either way, and it only seeks to piss off Brits when we change it.

what about adding the tag and ??

Hmmm ... I don't know. It seems in the weeds a little bit, considering they both can be covered under "lights"

well we have a headlight tag

@Darth_Vader - Actually, I think that's the tag I meant.

6:25 PM
does buick still fall under chevrolet tag??

Why would buick fall under Chevy?

oh meant general motors, but nevermind, dealer thinking ignore.. lol

People were using GMC as General Motors Corporation ... uh, no.

lol

At least someone modified the tag excerpt as being such ... changed that as soon as I saw it, lol.

6:28 PM
think Ive hit my record in tag times for a site here

Sounds like you're having too much fun :D

had to step away from coding

You realize one of my challenges for the month of March is editing tags?
Tag wikis that is.
9
Q: February and March 2016 Challenges are here!

Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2After talking with several people here on Mechanics.SE, we believe the January Challenge has gone very well. We want to follow it up with new challenges for the February/March time period so as to keep the momentum going. The new challenge will actually be challenges. To play this month, you'll...

ya, I had that challenge once for the other site I admin. We can unite together!! lol

I'm just saying, if you're froggy to do things over here, it would be a great help and I can award some more points!!

6:35 PM
will do
think my first goal is to hit 1000 rep

How much rep right now?

if I make a few more edits I should be at 200 rep
going to have to start answering and asking

haha, yes. Research Assistant would get you another 200 :D

what are the specs you guys prefer on the tags?
like pulling from wikipedia ok, some dont care

As I found out the hard way, pulling from Wikipedia is fine, just ensure you place a reference and don't copy foreign text into the edit area.

6:45 PM
sent one up for expedition excerpt

That's fine. I believe the Research Assistant badge is for the wikis not the excerpts, though.

@DucatiKiller So about that rabbit hole. Now I've started reading about sway bar physics.
I'm officially overwhelmed. I think its probably best to go all OE replacement parts as needed and just get the car back to normal again. Then later if I have extra money I can take more controlled small steps if I want to change anything

@JasonC - Oh, strap some 2" sway bars on it and be done with it ;-)

@JasonC what type of car?

6:57 PM
Lol

@JasonC - Really, that's an excellent choice.

Adding to the number of hose clamps already holding that car together.
No it's just, I just read a forum article with a guy strapping sway bars on and was still chuckling about it when you said that, lol.
@Darth_Vader 2001 Prelude sh
In not great shape.
Suspension wise.

I once owned an 86 Prelude. It was an awesome car.

ah.. wanted one once to put a H22A and turbo in

The one I had was carb'd w/5-speed manual. Absolutely a fun car to drive.
I traded it in for a new car when the clutch started going out on it.

7:01 PM
They already have the h22a's in them
It's super fun I love the car so much. I can't get rid of it.

dang 7 points away from my 200 goal.. start approving, lol

I'm going to drive it until I have to leave it on the side of a highway somewhere. I'll just salute, and walk away without looking back. I feel like that's an honorable death for a car.

I think the one I had was only 1.8l, but don't remember.

its hard to find one in good shape that hasn't been destroyed by a teenager

@JasonC Just leave the keys in it and walk away, eh?

7:03 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Sure. If you ever come across a silver prelude with the keys in it on the side of the road in the Northeast US, and you can fix it, it's yours. You're welcome in advance.

@JasonC hey.. if you can meet me half way I'll just trailer it from you, to a good home..

There's an idea. When it dies you can just tow me around, I'll pretend I'm driving it.

is it a bad question to ask what type of welder to get for building a frame?

But yeah. I just can't get my head around all the suspension physics. Are there freeware simulators?

7:07 PM
@JasonC there's a guy that is a math genius I've heard about that build frames for hot rods

The problem I keep having is I do understand the theories, but I have no experience, and none of the information out there really pertains to rough roads. I can imagine how a car will behave on a perfect surface but that's nothing like my normal driving conditions.
So I'm definitely replacing the busted control arm, I'll replace the front struts with the OEM ones, I'll look for anything else blatantly wrong, make sure the sway bar isn't screwed up, then start thinking about options.

Where are you buying your parts from?

if you're doing this much suspension I would just go with an aftermarket kit

What's a typical natural wear mode of a sway bar? Rust decreasing effective thickness? Metal fatigue? Permanent twist?
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Honda Parts Guys probably, junk yards where appropriate.

Ensure you check out RockAuto.com ... you might be surprised by the cost.

7:14 PM
@Darth_Vader Yeah well that was my idea at first too. Then I started doing the research. Then I got intimidated and overwhelmed by options. Hence back to OEM. Unless I have an epiphany.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 how is that store, heard of it but never bought there

I get about 90% of my parts from them if I have time to wait for them.

Will do

@Darth_Vader - Absolutely phenomenal.

they sell body parts?? I've looked at LMC but haven't bought from them yet

7:16 PM
@Darth_Vader It's served me well in the past but I havent ordered a lot from them. I got a half axle, a couple calipers, and a flywheel from them over the past few years. No problems.

LMC is expensive, but good products.

LMC was the only place I could find replacement parts for a truck, summit didn't have body parts

I don't know if RockAuto with body parts.
Looks like they do.

I always go junk yard for body parts. Helps that my next door neighbor does body work professionally and takes side jobs in his front yard.
Although right now, I have so much body work to do. I keep putting it off because literally every time I have work done in NYC, within a month somebody rips something off of it, usually while I'm parked.
The only part in good shape is the trunk, lol. Except it has some semi permanent coffee cup rings on it.

we have a tag for but what about adding the tag , too?

7:24 PM
You could put in a feature request for adding the same tag twice, and just use .
Sorry. I'm leaving now.

@BobCross Agreed. Your WRX will handle just fine without them no doubt =)
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Have you ever seen a Carb on an off road machine that was RIVETED shut??

@JasonC later

Peace.

@JonathanMusso - I'm not sure I'm following?

7:31 PM
@JonathanMusso ??

pie cutting

looks like some poor welds, lol

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 My bad. The bowl is riveted...you cannot take it a part

ya I was just making a Q&A because there wasn't really one that talked about pie cutting

ah nice :D
I hear you are a rodder, what do you work on?
And nice to have you here!

7:33 PM
I liked bagged trucks and european cars. . . Mostly anything custom. Used to air brush when I was younger which let to customizing and then I have a big technical background so I got into car stereo and building enclosures.

@JonathanMusso - No, but I can imagine it.

planning my next 5-10 year build.

Awesome, what will it be?
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yea. Must be designed for throw away use.

I love trucks, so it really depends on the what I can get. Thought about building a bagged and body dropped dually but finding a platform is hard.. cant find one with a 454 with miles under 150k
saw a couple of 53 fords that have been retro fitted with an s10 frame but obtaining parts that aren't price gouged is tough
@JonathanMusso why not answer the question and get rep?

Hmm, 50-60s is the era you are interested in? What sort of condition are you looking at?

7:40 PM
I had a 59 GMC once ... loved the truck. Too bad it was a heap of junk.

@JonathanMusso not just 50-60s. Just looking to build something and have an excuse to get away from working on a computer all day.

@Darth_Vader I will probably this evening. I'll see what's available in my club, there are lots of hidden gems throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta

8:18 PM
Hey, I just want to congratulate you guys on being the only SE site with a legit tag.
Oh well, actually, the honor is shared with scifi (although theirs is plural). But still.

REally?
Shaweet
How do you know nobody else does? I'd think some geek would have come up with some programming language named "unicorn"

Damn SO does have unicorn.
I'm sorry I shouldn't have been so quick to dole out unicorn praise.

three actually

And it's a lot more virulent than what we have.

Nah, gunicorn and sitecore-unicorn don't count.
This is unicorn and unicorns only.
No unicorn on worldbuilding. That's surprising. Roleplaying too.

Cats and unicorns ... what could be more magical.

^ Can that be mechanics 404 graphic?

I'd suggest ... YES

8:28 PM
Without the captions.

@JasonC that's a winner

@JasonC Id upvote your question but Ive hit my rep limit for the day

@JasonC - I see one problem with your question ... what does "rough" mean? How do you quantify "rough"?
Also, your thinking about how much g force would be exerted down upon the wheel when hitting a hole may not be accurate, considering what I learned from the "Engineering Explained" guy yesterday concerning suspensions.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I added this vague clarification:
> By "rough" roads I mean typical non-perfect driving conditions that you may encounter on a daily basis: Think patches, seams, and potholes on highways, think ripple, ruts, and depressions (e.g. typical road wear near stop signs, on roads frequented by trucks, etc.) on urban roads, post-construction patches, stripped roads being prepped for resurfacing, raised manholes, drain depressions, that kind of thing. It's a wide definition, but I don't mean off-road or post-apocalyptic conditions.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I based that claim on that video. The assumption is that the springs are compressed enough that it expands all the way into the pothole. But I'll pull that 1g out so it doesn't get distracting. It's not relevant.

8:44 PM
@JasonC - He suggests though, that if the suspension is compressed enough to expand the whole way to the bottom of the hole, it is moving at better than 1g (where g is a measure of acceleration).

Yeah that's what I meant by "> 1g".

Oh, I didn't see a greater than ... if I missed it, my apologies.

You totes missed it.
You missed the freakin' s*** out of it.
2

:o) ... I'm half asleep.
@JasonC ROFL!

Lol

8:54 PM
I still upvoted yah ... it's a good question.

1 hour later…
Ouch. He snapped that wheel off like it was nothing.

@DucatiKiller - Do you think either one of them are just saying, "Ah, Crap" right about then?
@Darth_Vader - Please remember, if you are shooting for any of my challenges, you have to have a worthy answer for me to put the bounty onto.

10:14 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ok..

does the unicorn edit work??

Has to be an answer answer.
Nice try, though ;-)

the specs are very good on area51

I've been pleasantly surprised the QPD has stayed above 10 for almost three months now. We had been trying and trying the later part of 2015 to get it there, then finally it hopped over and we haven't ducked below it ... Now, I hope I haven't jinxed us.

2 hours later…
11:59 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Definitely, the guy in the rear, Alonso was probably saying that as he flew through the air at 140mph or so.
Nice answer
Deserves some votes
