Opening SO in another tab to ask that question, but keeping this window open. In the mean time, anyone want to take a crack at this question? stackoverflow.com/questions/35835894/…

@Hosch250 I tried but there's not a way that I could find to do perma-delete, seems like VBA has to first mark it as deleted (i.e. "move to deleted items") and then empty the deleted items from the server

You should be able to mark as deleted, then perma-delete.

Right
Not sure if it'd be more efficient to do that for every item, or to let them build up and empty it on occasion, say a few times a day

That might be a premature optimization. Maybe not.
In the first place, why don't you just block all emails from the spamming addresses?

I might be able to write a rule for the deleted items though, say when they reach X items, then go ahead and prema-delete them all

6:08 PM
You might want to take this herecbay 13 secs ago

@Hosch250 Because not all messages from those addresses are necessarily spam, there are some that come in that I have to pay attention to
It's unfortunate that those are about 1 in 500 or 1000

How exactly is requesting a resource for code review "not about programming"? — James B. Byrne 47 secs ago
This question as currently presented would be off-topic on Code Review, as the code to be reviewed must be included in the question (rather than a screenshot/image of it. Besides that, if the code works as intended and the author is looking for improvements, Code Review would be appropriate. — Phrancis just now
You should probably post this on Code Review instead. This code "works" but you want a more efficient solution. — rayryeng 7 secs ago

The updated code is up on Code Review - codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/122165/… (let me know how i can improve this and do things correctly) — Latheesan 40 secs ago
@JamesB.Byrne He's asking for a directory service to find people. The programming is incidental. However, if there is specific, working code that OP wants reviewed and can post publicly, then Code Review may be helpful. If the code is not working, it could be part of another question here at SO. — Dan Lyons 37 secs ago

LatheesanI am working on a MSSQL Database (for a program called Sage 200). @CaptainObvious Hey look isn't that the same Sage thing that @Mat'sMug has been working on?

Sage200. My API wraps Sage300. Don't ask me what the difference is ;-)
what he's doing is voiding his support agreement if he has one

Ah, so they are modifying Sage's database?

you're not supposed to do anything directly with the db, only access it through their "View" API
yeah

6:42 PM
@Hosch250 I do, why?
I am, by the way, far from a jQuery expert... given that I quite despise it :p

@Shortstuff81000 wants help.

@Mat'sMug Makes sense, I'd assume the vendor can't be held accountable to support a modified version of their product(s)

yeah, except their "view" API is one of the shittiest db access API I've ever seen. but my code uses it and writes like Entity Framework nonetheless :)

@Shortstuff81000 where are you going with this? what is the next step?

that said I haven't seen a ton of db access API's.. but between Sage's "Views" and, say, DAO, ADODB, ADO.NET, Linq-to-SQL, Entity Framework, and NHibernate, I pick any but the former.

Q: Welcome to The 2nd Monitor!

Pin CrashSo, you have found your way to the Code Review main chat room, The 2nd Monitor, perhaps for one of these reasons: You were invited or "pinged" by a site moderator or other user to discuss a post on the main Code Review site; You visited Code Review for the 1st or Nth time, and noticed the chat ...

Thank you.
I actually had a question about that post.
Someone posted a much more idiomatic and cleaned up version of my code in an answer, is it acceptable to use that code in the original post? (because the focus is performance)

No, you shouldn't modify the original question after receiving an answer

This question would probably have been better if asked on Meta Stack Overflow, as you're really asking if SO is the appropriate place for code reviews or not. As such your question isn't about why your code doesn't work, which is the basic reason for SO, but instead is where to go when your code works but you want to improve it. — the Tin Man 52 secs ago

@Malachi I'm still a little confused, though; it seems to me that no matter what function is opening the XML, any method can retrieve the data? Sorry, I know I'm getting my words mixed up. I'm trying my best to explain, but I'm confused. :D

@Shortstuff81000 do you have a repo of your project? like on github or somewhere?\

@Malachi No, but I can upload it to my Drive and share it with you. :D
@Malachi OK I think I can ask my question in fewer words; any function I write can access the XML DB if it has the variable "xml" in its arguments and employ the $(xml).find('Character').each(function () { function?

yes.

7:31 PM
Awesome! Now I just need to figure out my checked event functions for my buttons. They are checkboxes turned into a buttonset using jQuery UI. :D

you should create a variable for your characters though
then you don't have to keep writing out $(xml).find('Character').each(function () {
you can create Character objects with the first function and wrap them into an array or whatever.
@Shortstuff81000, we need to get you going on Github or BitBucket so we can work on stuff together, then you can share with these guys more easily as well. that way we can clone the whole thing (if you want to have your project open source) and run it on our machines

I did create a Character object. I could create an array of characters with XML data in it, and still limit the number of characters to 5. (player + 4 "guests"). It's going to be based on Clue a little bit. :D I shared my project with you @Malachi
@Malachi I'll check them both out. :D

I won't be able to look at it while I am at work. I can wander from my path a little bit, but I don't want to push it the second week

Haha I wouldn't, either. I just created a github account. :)

Hey, quick question for the residents:
Is review of a DB table structure off topic? My instincts and a quick glance at the help section say yes, but...
ERD I should sayh, not a table structure.

I would say no but I'm often an outlier on those things

8:19 PM
We have reviewed DDL SQL code before, which includes DB structure. But reviewing an ERD diagram, yes that is off-topic, unless it comes with the DDL code as well

i.e. the DDL script itself, reviewed as such
if you have concerns about the data structure, you might want to ask on DBA.SE instead

@PinCrash Ok, that's what I thought. Bugger. I'm writing a proposal for freelancer or whatever they call themselves now.

@Mat'sMug ehhhhh I tried that before, a little iffy there too

ah, good to know

@Mat'sMug I don't think it's on topic there either, although someone in chat might do it.

8:21 PM
DB structure is usually tied to the business logic/data, which is something DBAs usually don't touch

Is it a dichotomy that I'm a software professional, yet I want to bid out my personal projects at the lowest possible level?

Depends, really.

Hey, @Mat'sMug I saw you on github LOL! :D

That's awesome. :D

thanks :)

9:35 PM
I'm not a big fan of appending the SQL procedure/function name and parameters through a function though... that potentially exposes every stored script in the database
Surely there's a better way of doing that... I hope...

not to mention that relying on stored procs too much for application logic may be a bad idea in the first place

lol IKR

nothing against stored procs, but .... business logic is business logic after all
and since the DB can't handle all of that part, why make it needlessly handle any of it (especially since SQL isn't really intended for that)

I really love how I can keep gaming stuff on one VD and SE / Spotify on another
and they still work similarly to alt-tabbing

IDK.. do I need that if I have 2 monitors?

You can put a VM in each monitor :D

I find it easier instead of stacking 4-8 unrelated things onto each other to have two desktops with related things arranged nicely

Virtual Desktop == Virtual Machine??

@PinCrash then you only have one monitor per VM, that's not helping me organize my stuff :)

it's a little like separate logins onto the same system that you can freely switch between
a little like opening two RDC's to the same remote machine in the same window

Oh, that's neat. So they run the same OS, but just have separate logins that are simultaneously accessible?

with the difference that you can move applications between them and it's not remote

I would say VDs are more like having two separate screens you can tab between than logsin (becaue that just makes it confusing)
How do you enable them?
