@Wipqozn I was watching MLP with my daughter last night. It was some episode where Twilight Sparkle had an extra ticket for some party, and all her friends wanted to go. My daughter started crying because she wouldn't just give it to Rainbow Dash (who is my daughter's favorite).
@twobugs 'Civilians panicking? Nah, definitely no terrorists here'
'Why would civilians panic over the fact that there might be a secret terrorist cell with genetically engineered super-soldiers working to aid the aliens trying to take over the world?'
I'm imagining the terrorists as a bunch of bored upper class kids who are just trying to have some fun in their suburbs without really realizing what they are getting into
Hopefully the old one shows up as a villain later on, only for the ponies to realize she became evil because she was forced to a life on the streets due to Twilight kicking her out of her job and home
@PrivatePansy "We would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you pesky kids and your alien tech!" - XCOM Commander shortly before being captured
Can I lose spells by breaking Dark Souls's covenants?
To be more specific, I'm interested whether I can join Chaos Servant Covenant, offer 30 humanities, get Great Chaos Fireball & Chaos Storm by doing so, and then join another covenant and still have these two spells available for me afterwards?
I still think my explanation is good, though. The EXALT guys are a bunch of bored teens who stumble upon alien tech and thwart your attempts to save humanity. Reverse Scooby doo.
There are some actions in XCOM 2 that I would like to see sped up. There is sometimes waiting times that seems unnecessary. Are there any settings or anything available to speed up actions?
There's a story I've been wanting to read called "Dad's Nuke" or something like that. It's by the same guy who is now writing the Half Life story now, except it was a standalone story with a clearly defined end
@StrixVaria I liked the first better than the second, but I didn't think the second was bad.
I'm hoping book #4 is better than #3. FAE rated it higher.
RIP @FAE
Oh, also, I didn't see it with her, but apparently there is some MLP episode involving time travel where everything is awful, and there are demons wearing pony skins or something, and they bust out and look all scary, and my daughter has nightmares now so thanks a lot MLP
@Sterno Yeah, the premise for the second sounds fine.
The first one was kind of like Starship Troopers, except better in every way. It's like Scalzi read Starship Troopers, thought "I see what he was going for there", and then fixed it all.
Reminds me of the RPG Eclipse Phase. Which I haven't actually played. But in that game, which is sci-fi, humans can download their consciousness into other bodies. And store them as backups.
Let's say you create an exact copy of your consciousness at a specific moment in time
If the biological you then dies, there wouldn't suddenly be continuity between your biological mind and the digital version. But some people will argue there would be
I've been accused of arguing for a soul for saying there wouldn't be magical continuity like that
I have just bought a used PS3 to use as a streaming media player. I've also bought a PS3 Blu-Ray remote (the one that looks like a TV remote) to use with it.
The PS3 I bought didn't come with a PS3 controller.
I've just powered the PS3 on, and got the setup screen asking me to plug a controller...
@StrixVaria True, but the case I'm imagining has the biological and digital versions basically just be two different forks. Doesn't seem like there would be any connection
@twobugs Sapience isn't really well-explained (as far as I know). If a digitial version is somehow a true copy of your consciousness, would you really be able to differentiate?
For me, the sense of 'self' is largely dependent on continuity. I think the teleporter example is particularly chilling because we honestly don't know if there would be continuity
As the title says, i was playing with friends a realm that i created, and now, we want to move the world to a friend's realm, i want to copy it, so my friend can download it and we can play it in his realm.
How do i backup the realm or, it is saved in my computer?
@StrixVaria Yeah, it's basically wholly uncharted territory. Going to be interesting to see how the field of AI develops (although some have argued it's stillborn)
@Yuuki Talking here about continuity of experience
@twobugs Yeah, I feel like the idea of a "true" AI that emulates sapience doesn't really sound feasible, but for specialized individual applications it's already getting eerily good.
@Yuuki I think it depends on what you mean. I still have continuity of experience while asleep, even if I don't remember all of it and it's silly nonsense
If you mean like, getting knocked out cold I'd argue I still have the full unbroken experience of what I went through during that time - being knocked out cold ;)
This whole FBI v Apple thing just seems weird to me. I would be shocked if the FBI doesn't have enough info to break the encryption on the iPhones through other means. AFAIK the iPhones in this case were owned by laypeople, not security professionals - I doubt they followed perfect practice
I get that this is a case to try and set a precedent, but the facts of this case make it seem like they're running the case itself on a faulty premise
(I don't know exactly what encryption is involved)
Reportedly, the device's storage is encrypted (duh), but pin code is just a factor of it, and it even has a hardware part (TPM maybe?) that provides a part of the encryption seed.
I know at some point someone made a website that connected to a government DB with the information in it, and people checked it. ANd it did actually contain what they had voted for.
I've never used the digital machines but I don't think they associated with a person either. There would be a problem if they did since voting is supposed to be anonymous...
33 states require ID to vote. They check your ID, then find your name in the registry. Some states require you to identify what political party you affiliate with.
Some states require specific voter registration cards.
However, after identification, you're handed a form, you fill it out, and you drop it in the collection box. Digital voting terminals require an operator prep the station, but this is different than the person who checked your ID/voter card
@twobugs yup. I also remember some site being linked in an SE chat (pretty sure it was here) that allowed you to search for a name and get information. IIRC @sterno checked for himself and said the result was factual.
According to in-game text and the Fallout Wiki on the U.S. Covert Operations Manual, finding these magazines will give you progressively higher ranks of the Covert Operations perk. The perk reports that it makes it more difficult for enemies to detect the player while sneaking, with higher ranks ...
@twobugs The pc version had them differentiated though. At some point I switched language to french, and I had to redownload a shitton of stuff. ANd couldn't switch back before it was done >_>
I think if you planned for it, it wouldn't be that hard to implement. I mean if they're already loading separate local tracks and possible lip sync timings for different languages, you just do that per character
I went to a BBQ place earlier this week and right as I was about to order brisket they came out and said "We're all out of brisket" and I started weeping
At this point I think we are getting close to the point where this whole "@fredley has a medical situation with less than desirable effects" turns into @fredley is a reincarnation of hitler.
Also, that cbiftrumpwins.com site is clearly racist, because it says "we speak English just like you", implying that all Americans speak English. SUCH RACIST. WOW
