12:16 AM
Hola!

@Kitḫ Oh hai!

12:28 AM
Is @Cerb still here?

@Kitḫ Hai.

@Cerberus Aw, shucks. I was hoping you were sound asleep.

Hmm why?

Still. I suppose it is not that late there.

Are you planning to butcher Greek?

12:34 AM
Well, because you are having trouble sleeping.

In fact I'm about to go to bed...

And because I was going to butcher Greek.

Yeah.
Oh, noes.
All the more reason!

I don't know enough Greek to be able to butcher it.
OK, well then, good night!

Ignorance is bliss...
Look what they did to the Euro!
I mean, everybody could see it was a bad idea to butcher the word Europe like that.

12:37 AM
...

It's Eur-ope, not Euro-pe.
Just saying.

You are really tired, aren't you?
Eur-ope, Eur-o.

But then what is this o??

The thing that makes it money instead of a continent.

The stem of the first element is Euru-/eury-.

12:38 AM
Gel-atin, Jell-O.
See?
;-)

No, that's naughty!

snurgle snurgle snort

But I'll mount my horse to fight the euros tomorrow.
Night!

Night! Sleep tight! Don't let the bedbugs bite!

I eat them alive, they're scared of me.
Bye!

@mahnax Hi!

user19161
I changed avatar again!

user19161
Back to an old favourite.

user19161
And I just got 13k. Yay!

@JasperLoy Hello!
My flag weight has gone floating-point. ~sniffle~

user19161
@Mahnax Are you looking forward to the weekend visit?

user19161
4:45 AM
Oh someone disaccepted so now I am below 13k.

@JasperLoy No.
@JasperLoy Aww.

user19161
@Mahnax Well, you can always try not to join in if you hate it so much.

@JasperLoy I am generally forced to participate. Merry Christmas, by the way. I have some strange feeling that you might be above 13k now...

user19161
@Mahnax Yes I know. I can sense the force. We are both Jedis.

@JasperLoy Yay! Dibs on Qui-Gon Jinn.

user19161
4:48 AM
@Mahnax I think I watched most of the Star Wars films but I gave up on trying to follow Harry Potter. The plot just gets more and more silly.

@JasperLoy I have never watched/read HP.

user19161
@Mahnax What about Twilight?

@JasperLoy snorts derisively No.
No offense.

user19161
@Mahnax Indiana Jones is good, I definitely watched them all.

@JasperLoy Hmm. I think I have seen 1.3903 IJ movies.

user19161
4:51 AM
@Mahnax I like The Last Crusade most, there is a miracle at the end of it when the water poured from the cup Jesus drank from healed Indiana's father.

@JasperLoy Hmm. I think that was the one I watched in entirety.
I am off to go play some Tyrant, then watch FMA:B, so I'm done chatting in a few minutes.

user19161
@Mahnax OK have fun. Computer games are boring to me.

@JasperLoy It's a fun game.

@Mahnax I am back!

user19161
See my comment on call past question.

@JasperLoy As am I! But I am leaving again. I just popped in to see what this new message was.
Good night!

4 hours later…
10:26 AM
@WorldEngineer Oh no, did he die? Dammit.
I liked him.
Never met him, though.

1 hour later…
user19161
11:51 AM
@Mahnax Good night!

12:50 PM
Coffee...

2 hours later…
2:22 PM
@EdGuinness:
My heart leaps up when I behold
a pudding or a pie:
Or yummy things in cooking pans,
A Danish, tart, or shortcrust flan,
Custards creeping within their mold,
And shall I try
To wrap it up in marzipan
And I could wish my days no less
Bound each to each by sweet stickiness.

2:42 PM
Hola!

Ohai!
I started a blog.
I put this poem in the blog.
But mostly I have been fiddling with the themes.

Haha, cool.
Good first post.
I have created a room on Chatzy.
The link is on Convore.

Thanks.

Oh, and the barber cut my hair too short.
At the back.
But I suppose it will grow back.

I should like to see pictures of that.

2:49 PM
I don't think you would.
He sort of shaved it, I don't know what it's called.

I can only enter the room with the administrator password.

Ahh.
Good.
See Convore.
A bit like this, except it looks worse.
It was my own fault.
He asked, and I said, "sure"—and then I saw what he had done. Oh, well.

It probably looks very stylish.
Just not your stylish.

@Cerberus is that you?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Nope.

3:03 PM
Cerberus is a dog, duh.

@Kitḫ Hmm yeah, stylish sounds a bit modern and unconventional.

@Kitḫ subscribed!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh dear.
I don't even know what that means.

Hahaha.
Yeah now we expect daily posts teeming with witticisms.

@Kitḫ do you know what RSS is?
So I guess I have to start saving my money brothers-brick.com/2011/12/16/… @aedia @RegDwight

3:16 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Really Scary Stuff?

Even I as a complete layman have a vague idea of what it is.

@Kitḫ your blog emits RSS which can be used by RSS readers to automatically download the latest posts

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm not holding my breath just yet. It will take years to develop the sets, and then it will take years for them to go down in price to a reasonable level.

@Cerberus Damn it!
I shall crack under the pressure.

How interesting!
That should give profundity to your posts.
You will be Dostoevskaya.
@Reg: Would that be at all possible in Russian?

3:20 PM
Nabokova?

Would what be possible in Russian?

I know one one can sometimes just stick -a behind names...
But here?
Just as in Latin.
The wife of a Lucretius is called Lucretia.
It is the family name.

did anyone order quesedilla?

Que?

@RegDwightѬſ道 No, the sets are coming summer 2012

3:22 PM
si

QuesEdilla????

@MattЭллен Quesadilla

Ahhh.

I'm eating

3:22 PM
I did!!
Gimme.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Mkay. Still, it will take a year for them to drop in price.

@Cerberus I want a piece.

@RegDwightѬſ道 if only that happened here.

passes plate to @Cerberus

More like, it will take until Christmas for them to go on sale for a week.

3:23 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 So would it be possible for someone to be called Dostoevskaya in Russian?
@MattЭллен Yay!!

@Cerberus Sure.

leaves microscopic piece for Bob
@RegDwightѬſ道 Oh, OK.

@Cerberus nibbles contentedly.

@RegDwightѬſ道 So women have the name of their husband/father but in the feminine form?
@Mahnax If you are happy with that, you should never need any other card than Cerberus!

I thought they did paternal/maternal naming.

3:26 PM
Hmm...

@Cerberus I am not happy with it, I'm content.

Well, that is all the people need to be.

Susanova = Susan's daughter. Ivanovitch = Ivan's son.

Ok...
I believe -vski is also a patronym.

First name, patronymic, family name.
No "Susan's daughter" nonsense. Pfft.
People's names in several cultures include one or more additional names placed between the first given name and the surname. In Canada and the United States all such names are specifically referred to as middle name(s); in most European countries they would simply be regarded as second, third, etc. given names. In some countries there is usually only one middle name, and in the United States and Canada it is often abbreviated to the middle initial (e.g. James Ronald Bass becomes James R. Bass, which is usually standard for signatures) or omitted entirely in everyday use (e.g. just James B...

3:29 PM
I don't know much about Russian names, though.
As I was just writing.

@RegDwightѬſ道 OK, and which is Dostoevski?

You don't need to get all huffy.

Fodor D.

A Chinese town where nobody speaks Chinese: languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=3634

@Cerberus I don't understand the question. Last name is last name.

3:31 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Okay, so what would his sister be called?
Let's assume her first name is Anna.

Anna Mikhailovna Dostoyevskaya

@Kitḫ banana = funny shaped fruit

@RegDwightѬſ道 Ahh OK, thanks. That is what I thought.
@RegDwightѬſ道 And his wife?

Something something something.

@MattЭллен Banana = nasty.

3:33 PM
So she would never take any of his names?

@MattЭллен A thousand pardons, friendly squiggle of wisdom.

@Mahnax you have to peel them before you eat them

@Cerberus What do you mean: any?
She could take his family name. Just as everywhere.

@MattЭллен Eat them?

@RegDwightѬſ道 Ah OK, and then it would be Dostoyevskaya.

3:34 PM
Ayup.

@Kitḫ oh dear, child! Do you not know of the power of a banana?

@MattЭллен Thanks, but even so. Still gross.

@MattЭллен "Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana."

@RegDwightѬſ道 OK, that makes sense. It's just that the system is different in each country. It's rather messed up in Dutch.

I feed my children bananas frequently.

3:35 PM
@Kitḫ That was bad. snickers

@Mahnax It's not mine.
Mm, Snickers.

@Kitḫ ah, so you're a master too! You were just playing with me ;-)

@Kitḫ I know, I've heard it before.

We have the same three names, but most people used either a patronymic or a family name, not both. Now, patronymics don't exist officially any more, so the few families that still use them have them as secondary first names.
If that makes sense.

gasps

3:37 PM
But most patronymics have been turned into family names for those who didn't have a family name in the 19th century.
So your last name will mean something like "son of x" where x is your great-great-...grandfather.

because there were a lot of orphans back in the 1800s

Not really: because most people just didn't have family names.
At at some point in history (not necessarily that late).
The most common Dutch last name is Jansen, which means son of John.

There are plenty of families in the US with family names like that.

Yes.
It is probably common in all Germanic languages.

One of my family names is Jensen, for the John who was the grandfather of the guy who actually immigrated here.

3:40 PM
I don't know whether the French did it too.
@Kitḫ Yeah, exactly. That sounds Scandinavian?
Or German?

We can't trace our ancestry back any further because that's all we know.

Oh, OK.

I think Norwegian. But I am not sure.

No doubt you could find more information in old registers here.

My brother is keeper of that knowledge.

3:41 PM
OK.

@RegDwight: Good news, the new Lego ladyfigs are the same height as a female minifig with a slope-skirt

If he ever finds a 17th-century manuscript he can't read, call me.

and the hair pieces/hats are compatible

Well, no, that's what I mean. We get back that far and then all we know is that his grandfather's name was John. Or Jan? Whatever.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I am just finished putting all the Friends sets on my wishlist.

3:43 PM
@Kitḫ Okay, as opposed to what? What would you want to know?

Only 70 behind The Destroyers.

Yay!
By the way, I will be away all weekend.
Alas.

@Cerberus Where?

@Cerberus Well, his father's name, family name, anything that would tell us which Jan he was related to?

I am about to leave for the country.

3:44 PM
Tick country?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hotlinking! Naughty!

Nearby, but this time not in the tiny cottage.

@Cerberus Nice.

@Kitḫ 为什么?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 They explain it for you: thebrickblogger.com/hotlinking

Christmas dinner thing that my brother and I are supposed to cook for my mother's sorority club.

3:45 PM
stifles giggle

@Cerberus That won't end well.

Heh.
Nah we can pull it off.

Nonsense! @Cerb is an accomplished chef!

Unless you're good at cooking, and can carry him.

And we have some friends there to help us serve and cook.

3:47 PM
@Cerberus Oh, good.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I think Europe should reply in kind! Turn Belgium into a China wonderland

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Essentially, they want you to muck up the web with lots of redundant stuff.

@Kitḫ Thanks!
Actually my brother will be chef and I sous-chef.

@Cerberus I retract my previous statements.

Yay!
There will be loads of old hags and their husbands to pinch our cheeks.
Well, they're nice. But still.

3:48 PM
I don't suppose there will be any barons of considerable stature about?

@Kitḫ Oh, they're one of those sites.

@Kitḫ Heh, whom do you have in mind? No, not that guy, though his cousin will be there.
I.e. my brother's girlfriend.

fantasies dashed

Well, I already lost the link to the article, so... pfft.

Well, I shall have to create another elaborate fantasy, then.

3:50 PM
Do your best!
How about heating that often fails, in an old, extremely cold house?

I can work with that.

And our sleeping in the servant's room?

Perhaps some 19th century clothing that just happens to be in the wardrobe?

Alas, there will be none of that.

Hmm, yes. The servant's quarters.
Indeed.

3:52 PM
There will be nightly star-watching on the tower.

That sounds lovely.

And sitting around the fireplace with drunken old people.

That sounds...meh. Except that they will probably go to bed early.

If only!
But we youngsters shall go to another room after dinner.
So we needn't be with the older people all the time.

I made it onto the "frequently in room" list for EL&U chat.

3:55 PM
Congrats! You deserve it.

Thank you.
I have ~2500 posts in here.

Wow, I have 34K.
I guess I talk a lot.

@Kitḫ Woah.
@Cerb has over 35k.
As does @Reg.

Well, that makes sense, since they're usually the ones I am talking to.

Only one "o".
Talking to.

3:59 PM
I know, whippersnapper.
