6:17 PM
I just gave away 12 bounties across 4 sites, go and answer those top unanswered questions if you want some cross-site reputation... :D

@Sathya what's happening with that?

@Sathya From that I get the impression that The Comms Room is a shouty sweary 4-chan... okay, a more shouty sweary 4chan.

@MikeyB raaaaaaaaaaaaaape!

@voretaq7 You do have a point. I hear that IBM accepts sodomy as currency.
in The Comms Room, 2 mins ago, by voretaq7
@MikeyB so as an IBM partner I get lube?

So it's a classy chat room then...

I think that after the meta post some of us are watching out for messages that go worse than those, at least I'm ready for flagging...

6:32 PM
@TomWijsman What Meta post?

@DanielBeck: The one Sathya linked.
Here is an example of what seems common there, and there is no moderator cleaning them up:

Granted I get that it's people who do this stuff for a living and when they get frustrated they need to go somewhere to unwind, but it's still a bit wrong to do it in a public forum...

Wow.

Or well, perhaps they wait to do it around the time no moderators are there.
There is also something about F-bombs at night starred...
Best to keep them back, before they anger the wrong person and they start flaming around.

@Mokubai That's what alt.sysadmin.recovery is for, isn't it?

6:37 PM
@DanielBeck Yeah, that'd be an appropriate place :)

I remember, I once used a four letter word here in chat. I got 4 flags before it was edited by a moderator who wanted to prevent me from being auto kicked or something like that.

@TomWijsman I'd flag that. and kill it. and suspend

@studiohack Sooo... goodbye @TomWijsman, was nice having you in chat?

@DanielBeck lol. it depends on the comment. that particular one is very...vulgar

:2724752 I think you're right. But it's Meta, so it's free ;)

6:48 PM
I just think that questions that can be answered by the most simple of google searches are not the kind of quality necessary to keep the site going
WTH, I just had a weird counting circle next to my icon while I was typing...

@Mokubai That was the chat flags.

Network timeout thingy? or something else?

Someone didn't like the quoted post from The Comms Room.

Ahhhh, fair enough

@TomWijsman I just read through their star list a few minutes ago, and that exact post was the one where I just stopped

6:56 PM
what is @MichaelMrozek doing here? :P

I'm everywhere; you just aren't always aware of it

@MichaelMrozek sorry buddy, that's not always true

EVERYWHERE

Learning something new everyday.

The mods are like ninjas, Random has the ninja-like tendency of knowing when you are just about to type about him and replying beforehand...
@surfasb Gotta pace yourself though, don't want to run out of things to learn...

I was wondering what the heck was on the Stack overflow blog. . .
Posted by Alison Sperling on December 14th, 2011

The holiday season is upon us, and as another year comes to an end, it is Stack Overflow Annual User Survey time again! So, take a break from wrapping gifts and come tell us about yourself. We promise it will only take a few minutes of your time.

Of course, as the “annual” implies, we’ve been running a survey for a few years now, including last year’s survey which marked the first time the anonymous data was formally used in support of selling advertising on Stack Overflow and Server Fault. This data is an important part of keeping the lights on around here, and, as a user of either of those two sites, or any Stack Exchange site for that matter, we ask you to participate. …

I thought it was a hampster and someone informed me it was a gopher!!
The Gopher protocol is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. Strongly oriented towards a menu-document design, the Gopher protocol was a predecessor of (and later, an alternative to) the World Wide Web. The protocol offers some features not natively supported by the Web and imposes a much stronger hierarchy on information stored on it. Its text menu interface is easy to use, and well-suited to computing environments that rely heavily on remote text-oriented computer terminals, which were still common at the ...

@Mokubai I'll take that as a compliment :P

Yet another old technology to add to my nerd file.

@studiohack I certainly mean it in a good way. All the mods do a good job that is only evidenced by the massive pile of dead bodies that only those blessed with the power to see dead people are truly aware of.
I mean I knew that the mods had a full job keeping the site tidy, but only realised the full extent of it all once I got 10K...

@Mokubai thanks :-) we certainly try
@Mokubai I felt the same way when I became a mod

7:13 PM
Hi there :D

hey @BloodPhilia

@TomWijsman We can post cross site bounties?

@surfasb no, he posted bounties on different sites, at once

Ah ok.

7:36 PM
Wow, what the hell's the matter with The Comms Room? :/

@BloodPhilia This is what happens when you put that many males into one room.

@surfasb Never seen anything like that happen here... :/

Everything degenerates into locker room talk.
@BloodPhilia There aren't 20+ people in this room at all times.

Not over here
@surfasb I don't believe the regulars here would allow for it to degenerate to that level to be honest...

Ya true.

7:41 PM
I've rarely seen conflict here!

The flagged posts just remind me of what the guys I know in real life.

And when it does occur, it's quickly dealt with and dismissed by kindness :D
It's like a soap over there lol
Makes for great entertainment :P albeit sad

Each of our 73 sites has a common goal: to own their community. Taking ownership means (in part) figuring out how to promote the site, make it attractive to newcomers, and make the awesome content and community even more awesome. While we have internal- and external-facing teams of employees to help with this, Stack Exchange is fundamentally driven by the people who use it. Here are a couple of ways that two Stack Exchange communities have come up with to improve their sites.**

Answer-a-thon!

One of the things we pride ourselves on is the ridiculously high answer rates on our sites. (Some other  …

I like these "all nighters"
Like hack-a-thons.
Maybe compile canical answers on stuff like x86 v x64, address space and memory, SSDs, troubleshooting bootups and stutters, etc

8:35 PM
@surfasb we have that. It's called community-faq. There was the question on environment variables, and more recently a topic suggestion on meta about something like this, but I don't know whether we got a topic from it.
I'd be willing to invest a few 100 rep in bounties if we'd make a larger event out of getting new community faqs.

@DanielBeck You mean the community wiki?

@BloodPhilia we're all males here. for the most part, so not sure that means anything lol
except for @surfasb, I take it?

@DanielBeck that's a nice idea - get some of the established users with rep to burn to sponsor some community-faq topics.

@nhinkle how would that work?

@studiohack we make a list of community-faq topics that need some good canonical answers. Then we split them up so that each sponsoring user gets 1 question to themselves. they ask the question, then put a large bounty on it. then we encourage all the other users to go and answer one of the dozen questions with big bounties
we could coordinate choosing topics via this room and a shared google spreadsheet, and we could announce it via the blog

8:47 PM
@nhinkle interesting.... I like that idea

@studiohack I agree.

And, you can have up to 3 active bounties. So people who wanted to could sponsor multiple posts.
Also relevant, see this meta post:

Q: Another take on canonical answers: Add a "canonical" vote

The P.G. Rep Mining Co.When closing a question as a duplicate, it is becoming harder and harder to search for a good original as the pool of questions and answers grows and grows. While the new dupe closing dialog is a huge step forward, it doesn't always work - if you've spent some time on the site, you know there ar...

@nhinkle Isn't that what the Community wikis are for?

@surfasb not really. Community wikis are a weird thing. They can be used in conjunction with canonical posts to encourage participation, but the difference here is about how to promote the canonical posts. Community wikis don't get any special treatment in search results.

@nhinkle Yeah, the search results priority would be big.

8:57 PM
Hello everyone

good afternoon simon

Hows it going?

Es geht gut!

We got Adobe Premiere and After Effects today... I'm way too excited about this

9:18 PM
evening!
@SimonSheehan Tell me how it's working for you in comparison to Final Cut!

hello @slhck!
@slhck Oh man, it's fantastic in the hour I used it

haha, notifications are snowmen, how weird is that!

So many effects, so much tweaking you can do, yet still easy to pickup and play with. Rendering is fast too!
Neat audio options even

@SimonSheehan Yeah that's right

I left it on to finish downloading After Effects

9:19 PM
Reminds me that I need to finish editing our music video

Since when I left it had 4 hours to go at 96kb/s...

@SimonSheehan … at school?

@slhck ....yes :P

Oh.. that's. Fast!

Haha. Well I'm sure it'd be faster if kids weren't streaming sports games over our already poor connection :P

9:21 PM
@SimonSheehan mine is like that most of the time. at max 150kb/sec

@studiohack Wow o.o

@SimonSheehan I call for a blog post! Adobe vs. Final Cut

@SimonSheehan my internet is sometimes slower than 75% of the US :P
it really varies, depending on the rest of the area and such. best time to watch movies online? middle of the night :P

@nhinkle Yeah! That'd be awesome. I shall do it! I've even got time to make it now, I finish my last major project tomorrow (before christmas anyway)

whoo!

9:22 PM
yay Simon!
:)
I'd love to read that … never used Final Cut before

My first post on the bicycles blog comes out sometime today :D

I used Final cut for a few hours and realized ... I couldn't figure it out

@nhinkle link when it comes. what did you write about?

@slhck What do you use again?

@SimonSheehan Premiere Pro CS4

9:24 PM
@slhck Ah okay :) Just got CS5.5 now. Awesome experience so far on Mac.

I don't know, it lacks a bit of multicamera features I'd love to see, but I'm more familiar with audio editing anyways

@studiohack you'll have to wait and see! :P

@nhinkle I knew you would say that.
(considers brute hacking Blog Overflow)

lol. neil told me it'd go up at noon, but who knows whose time zone he meant

Lol, just noticed the subtle change to your avatar @studiohack :D

9:26 PM
oh. tomorrow. hmm... thought it was for today. oh well gotta wait an extra day

@Mokubai yah, my profile name on MSO is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer :P
@nhinkle so not fair.

@slhck Mulitcamera?

@SimonSheehan Well, let's say you're shooting footage of the same event with multiple cameras, for example like we did in our music video with three cameras simultaneously
Then it would be great if Premiere could help you in aligning these and switch between the different angles

@slhck you have a music video?

@slhck Ah I see, makes sense.

9:35 PM
@nhinkle It's in the making!

We also got After Effects...that'll be fun to play with!

@SimonSheehan But the way it's currently working... well, you can have 4 cameras at most, and we had 12 synchronized tracks in the end :P

@slhck Wow o.o thats awesome

@SimonSheehan Lots of work ;D

:D but sounds fun!

9:39 PM
Yeah it is, especially if you have a machine that can handle it

Well I'm way too excited - iMac's AND new software? That's too much to handle!

You definitely should be, haha

Had a brilliant idea too
Get a switch > Install AE on the 2 Mac Mini's > Make network render servers!
Perhaps it'll work anyway.

Do they have a parallel processing tool?

Whats that?

9:45 PM
like, what you described :P
network rendering

Well apparently Premiere doesn't, but you can import Premiere timelines into AE for rendering, and AE has that.

ah, then I shall try that later … I might have another PC here which I can use for rendering stuff

Good plan. I hope this would work... Seems smart enough at any rate :p

although I doubt it'll be significantly faster with that, it's just a C2D

Ahh. Well honestly, for most projects people make, it won't require much... MY projects might :p

9:54 PM
Well. 12 tracks 1080p HD video. Just saying ;)

Haha. I've started using 1080p HD now too :P
I used to just use 720p since it took ages to render, but .... time to move up!

But unless you want to target BluRay, it's really a waste of storage space, CPU time …

But it looks fancy when you post it to Youtube! :P

Hey! @slhck @SimonSheehan
:D

Hello @BloodPhilia !

10:04 PM
hi @BloodPhilia, what's up?

Nothing much! just some random browsing
@slhck How about you :D?

@BloodPhilia Ah, the same, basically! Haven't seen you around in a while! Been busy with school?

@slhck Amongst other things!
But yes, I've been awfully preoccupied!

That sucks. I wish I had more time as well …

Q: Question of the Week #35

nhinkleNow we're into week 35 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity's sake. We are...

I had suggested the Symlink question, but the answer could use some work.

Q: Scenario - NTFS Symbolic Link or Junction?

UnsignedThe differences: Symbolic Link - Relative or absolute paths, supports UNC shares and file or directory targets Junction - Absolute, local directory targets only Let's assume we're creating a reparse point to create the redirect C:\SomeDir => D:\SomeDir Since this scenario only requires lo...

10:20 PM
@surfasb I'm confused by your comment on that recent VBA ByRef answer. :) "Your googling skills belies your programming instincts"?

@surfasb can the question be closed and still be question of the week?

@wizlog Depends on what it's closed for
But I'd find it highly irritating to promote an off-topic question as "question of the week"
2

@techie007 I was referring to your "not a programmer by trade."
Good programming skills != being paid to program :)

@slhck I can agree with you there. It would be odd. (BTW the question I had in mind was superuser.com/q/366460/81403
)

@wizlog Just ask that the two be merged.

10:23 PM
Ah, a dupe it is.. well, that's no problem per se, I'd say. Is there enough material to write about in a blog post?

@wizlog you don't think that that is a little self promotion?

@surfasb I always try to stick that in, because as much programming as I do, it's not my job so I hate to make claims I know anything about it. ;)

@wizlog Because haimg's answer is fairly innovative .

@soandos Of course I thought it was... so?

@wizlog "Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity's sake."

10:25 PM
@soandos BTW your one of the ppl that closed it...

"Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity's sake."
@wizlog I know

Anyone who wants to buy a Motorola Milestone :D?
I'm getting rid of that awful thing :D

@BloodPhilia haha, after reading the second message, nope

@slhck I tried not to...

@techie007 Yeah. I was the exact opposite. By the time I took up my first system admin job (current job), I knew more about Windows than my boss.

10:26 PM
=)

@slhck Never, ever buy a Motorola!

haha, well, fair enough. I don't think it's a major problem @wizlog
@BloodPhilia I've been warned before.

@surfasb Plus describing passing by value vs. passing by reference is always a tricky subject. ;) Don't even get me started on Bosses who know nothing. :D

&$Hello;

@techie007 Yeah, my boss is great. He's great because he's great at managing the office politics.
I just said great three times in the same sentence about my boss. People must think I'm kissing A$$.

10:35 PM
Wow
I just got goosebumps

Q: Reopen Request for Windows SKU question

Diogo RochaI don't agree with closing my question... As far I had the same doubt when heard the term "Windows SKU" more users would have the same. It is not a economic question, I was asking about the Windows related term. I didn't saw any closing request for my question unless the moderator one. For me ...

WOW
Talk about putting up a fight. . .

@surfasb I work for a computer company, and by boss hates email. Not because it's full of spam and should die, but because he gets freaked out by people communicating in email. It's like he's too old to "get" email. ;)

@surfasb I don't understand what's there to be sooo mad about, really.

10:40 PM
Yay time to go home. Check you cats l8a

@slhck Ya, some people need to just step away from the website and go outside.
Get a beer or something, you know?

Yup. It's really nothing to be so worked up about. That's not what we want.

I've felt like that at times. Wanting to rant on an email thread or just to rant in general when I see in my work email list, Yet Another Question about our Email server.

If it keeps being a big deal let us know/flag it, and we'll lock the post. It's not a big deal.

And then I remember what they taught me in Business school. Written communication does a very very poor job of conveying emotions and tone. Which is why good book writers will write like 100 drafts of their story to get the right "feel".
@nhinkle You are right. Not a big deal. I was just not expecting that post to garner such a long thread in such a short time.

10:49 PM
@surfasb Absolutely. Plus, we have a very huge language barrier here on the site. Concisely written English can sound harsh at times …

@slhck VERY HARSH. The guys I grew up with played a lot of pranks and were sarcastic. I often forget not everyone has had to grow thick skin.

@surfasb where're you from?

@nhinkle Georgia. South Eastern USA
Take a group of stereotypical rednecks
Ya, those are my friends :)

Gosh

hey again @BloodPhilia

10:59 PM
Still goosebumps!
Soooo good!
@studiohack Hi
And it's my birthday now
About 10 seconds ago :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY @BloodPhilia! :)
3

Thanks

anyone have experience with LED monitors? versus LCD? anything different? any advantages?

@studiohack LED backlit?
Or full LED

that one, for example @BloodPhilia. what's the diff? LED backlet versus full LED?
how do the two coexist?

11:04 PM
Led Backlit is just an LCD screen that uses LED's to be lit instead of small tube lights

'evening, everyone.

@Wuffers Hi (:

Hi, @BloodPhilia. How are you?

@BloodPhilia oh. so more efficient?
hey @Wuffers

Full LED is just awesome

11:05 PM
@BloodPhilia Happy birthday then! :)

Hi, @studiohack. How's it going?

LED Backlit has lower energy consumption
@slhck Thanks!

hi @Wuffers!

And hello to you, @slhck!

@Wuffers Fine thanks, how about yourself?

11:05 PM
How are you doing?

I'm good @Wuffers - how about you?

@BloodPhilia: Meh. Pretty under the weather.

wasssup @slhck? :)

@studiohack Uh, not much! Packing stuff, I'm leaving for Germany in two days, pretty excited already!

@studiohack: Pretty ill.

11:07 PM
@Wuffers ugh :(
@slhck I'm sure you are!

@Wuffers Oh, that's bad, get well soon!

@slhck Germanyyy

@studiohack Gotta get things done at work first though :(

@slhck work is work lol

@slhck: Thankies.

11:09 PM
@studiohack If there's hell, I guess I'll have to encode videos for the rest of my life there.
@BloodPhilia Ever been there?

Anyone with a blog account want to proof-read/check out my next blog post? It's long and detailed, so it would be nice if anyone wants to read it before I publish it, to make sure it all makes sense.

@slhck I live very near the German border

Also, congrats to @Redgrittybrick for his first blog post being published yesterday

@nhinkle I can, but don't have the time at the moment. will take a look in a bit, if that works

@studiohack sure thing. Won't be publishing 'til next Thursday.

11:11 PM
@nhinkle okay

@nhinkle I'll do it – do you want me to fix stuff when I see it or … ?

@slhck just ping me in the blog editors room if you notice anything that needs changing. I'd like to know what gets changed :)

@nhinkle Sure thing, will do!

Thanks @slhck!

11:17 PM
morning

@JourneymanGeek Morning?!

apparently

haha, time to go to bed for me again :P

it was probably dark two hours ago. That big ball of nuclear fire is now visible from the section of intraterrestrial rock i happen to reside in. Its morning ;p

lol

11:24 PM
erg
hit rep cap so there's no use in answering any more questions till it resets ;p

well that's gonna be in … an hour or so?

Hm. I haven't really been finding stuff to answer lately :/

I've had a very good week ;p

aaah, the partition question
:P

11:28 PM
@slhck: its cyclic, i find. Also, i'm getting a good deal of residual reputation from older questions
the one which people keep editing to make better, since i know nuts about GPT ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that has happened to me too.
haha

11:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek I make basically all of my rep off of old questions these days. It's like getting interest from the bank!

XD
I think nearly all my rep on SF is like that (and i have less than 1000 rep there)

Ah, it's late. Good night, people!
