Also would that be an appropriate question to ask?

Because the ICANN is probably going to be disbanded by that time

ICANN has been around probably 17ish years surely the internet won't be gone by then(ignoring the internet started before that). What is the next big then apple and android apps seriously?

I dunno but to assume that the current state of the internet, with IANA taking care of DNS and IP ranges, etc. may be incorrect

Quick question: On shrinking a volume on an SSD using Disk Management, does Windows issue the TRIM command for the newly unpartitioned space?

I don't see why it would... The space should all be TRIM'd already

I've never run my SSD 850 PRO anywhere near full so I'm looking into overprovisioning to enhance performance consistency under load. (Write amplification is not an issue—these drives have very low write amplification under normal usage conditions.)
~475 GB system partition to be reduced to 400 GB.
Whatever. Just shrunk the partition.
Overprovisioned by just under 16%.
AARGH Samsung Magician claims it's up to date when it's not
Downloading a fresh copy now.

2:40 AM
Never trust anything that claims to run on magic

@bwDraco I wonder if they fixed up windows 10 detection yet

It works.
@JourneymanGeek Yes, you can enable RAPID mode on Windows 10.
Once again, though, does Windows trim unpartitioned space? OP won't work unless the unused space is trimeed.

OP won't make any difference since the unused space is already TRIM'ed

@qasdfdsaq Not necessarily. Windows may have to move files to shrink a volume.

Which TRIM's the space freed...
... that's how TRIM works...

3:02 AM
Alright, dragon's got a question.
0
Q: Does Windows trim unpartitioned space on an SSD?

bwDracoLaptop with Windows 10 Pro v1511 x64, with 512 GB Samsung SSD 850 PRO as system drive. In an attempt to overprovision space on the SSD, I just shrunk the system partition from about 475 GB to 400 GB. While Samsung Magician recognizes the unpartitioned space as overprovisioned, it's my understand...

Hmm. Seems Duracell Quantum batteries have a higher open-circuit voltage from the datasheets.
I'm used to seeing AA batteries measure 1.6 V fresh, but it seems the new Quantum cells start at 1.65 V.
The big part, though, is that the internal impedance is much lower (81 mΩ vs 120 mΩ).
This means a substantial increase in battery life under heavy load.
I wouldn't say these are worth it for light loads, and you'd really want to use rechargeables for heavy loads anyway.

Bob
@bwDraco Not that substantial, judging by the graphs.

Only under heavy load.
The advantage is slight for lower loads.

Bob
@bwDraco Even under heavy. It's not all that much of an improvement.
Keep in mind that the initial resistance doesn't directly correspond to the resistance over the entire lifetime.

Well, as technology improves, the improved chemistry might eventually trickle down to standard-grade AA batteries...

Bob
@bwDraco It's only a minor improvement at best. But, maybe. Depends on the cost difference.

4:15 AM
The charts indicate a ~7% increase in capacity for low loads.

Bob
The problem with those graphs is the different x-axis makes it hard to directly compare.

At very heavy loads, the advantage is more like 35%.
Then again, you'd want to use rechargeables for heavy load. NiMH cells perform better than alkalines if you're drawing more than a hundred or so milliamps.

@bwDraco depends
For some reason my camera tends to kill rechargables
Even decent ones.

The latest generation of Eneloop cells last eons if you take good care of them.
With proper care, you can reasonably expect 12-15 years of service under light to moderate loads.
They're also extremely stable (70% charge retention over 10 years rated).
Older generation Eneloop cells have been tested in the real world and they do meet their original self-discharge claims. You can't say accelerated aging isn't an accurate way to test these cells...
@JourneymanGeek What model? I don't say there are many cameras that take AA batteries these days...
The last one I know of from a major brand is the Canon PowerShot A1400, which is designed to operate like older digital (and later film) compact cameras (complete with optical viewfinder), and that camera dates back to 2013.
...and the Canon PowerShot A-series is dead, replaced by newer entry-level ELPH models.

4:33 AM
@bwDraco Powershot A1100
Its older but works well enough

Hmm. Nikon has models that take AA batteries that are still in production, the most recent of which is the COOLPIX L32: imaging.nikon.com/lineup/coolpix/l/l32

I'll likely wait a bit and swap it out for a mirrorless in future

Bob
@bwDraco Lastest gen isn't as good as the one prior.

@JourneymanGeek The most direct replacement for that is the aforementioned A1400, and once again, it is discontinued.
@Bob Higher internal resistance?

Bob
Dunno if you still get the Japanese ones in the US.

4:34 AM
Also, My main camera is infrequently used and its a replace on failure thing ;p

Bob
Apparently they sold the factory to Fujitsu.

@Bob All of mine are made in Japan.

Bob
Yea, mine are from China. Only bought them late 2014.
They won't last as long. But good enough for my use anyway.

5:06 AM
Uh-oh. The Backspace key appears to be mechanically damaged on my keyboard. Guess I'll have to replace it soon (and it would be good opportunity to get a mechanical keyboard this time around).
Apr 26 '15 at 1:07, by DragonLord
Well, according to my Best Buy receipt, I purchased it on May 28, 2014. Time flies...
Not exactly great service life.
The key still works but it feels "off".
Left half of the Backspace key seems to be busted.
I suppose mechanical key switches are far more robust than this.
I'll get Cherry MX Brown switches.
It took them this long to come out with the Ryos MK FX.
I thought it was vaporware.
...and I guess I'll need to wait until the end of February to get it.
I'm constantly in front of my computer which is why I bought a separate keyboard in the first place. I'd hate to have to replace the laptop's integrated keyboard.
Per-key RGB lighting is a huge boon.
Apr 26 '15 at 1:51, by DragonLord
I want Roccat to add per-key RGB lighting on a future flagship model.
Apr 26 '15 at 0:54, by DragonLord
On first thought, it would seem to be little more than mere eye candy, but in practice, it gives you the ability to color-code specific keys or groups of keys for a significant ergonomic advantage.
The industrial design of the Ryos MK FX seems to be different in several key ways from the Isku I'm working on.
The layout is still familiar ROCCAT: five macro keys on the left, three "Thumbster" keys, and an Easy-Shift[+] key in place of Caps Lock,
It seems to get rid of the dedicated multimedia keys, replacing them with an Fn key that takes the place of the right Windows key.
The Ryos MK FX also does not have onboard macro recording but this is not a feature I use.

5:27 AM
I'm still on my original razer blackwidow ultimate/classic

This will be my first mechanical keyboard. Given that mechanical key switches are far more robust than membrane key switches, it should be the last keyboard this laptop will ever need.
Oddly enough, the ROCCAT site says it'll be hitting stores start of February, but Newegg declares the release date to be end of February.
Well, are mechanical keyboards indeed significantly more durable than membrane keyboards? Unlike my parents, who have used an OEM keyboard problem-free for many, many years, I spend far more time in front of the computer.
The keycaps are noticeably smoothed on my Isku.
I suppose that with the removal of the media keys, the Ryos MK FX is slightly more compact, which is a big deal because I eat at my desk very often.

Membrane keyboards can last as long they just dont, often it is cause of liquids or a single key causing problems. and the Mechanical switches used could be important too there is now chinese clone (mechanical) switches out there (like everything else in the world that has been cloned)

@Psycogeek The left key switch of the Backspace key on my Isku is damaged.
I've been using mine for about 20 months and I'm surprised at how quickly keyboards can fail under heavy use.

Potentially a person could repair a mechanical keyboards switch item much easier than trying to figure out what went wrong with a membrane

Then again, I use this keyboard far more than you might think. I'm in front of my computer all the time.

5:41 AM
I used to go through cheap keyboards , toss them buy a new one, but the good cherry keyboards have lasted forever, if only i had known while playing games with all that other garbage.

I care about the longevity of my equipment. These membrane key switches just don't seem to hold up under heavy use.
Cherry MX key switches are supposed to be good for 50m keystrokes, which is 10x to 50x the life of typical membrane key switches.

I dont think it is so much heavy use, because the method of switching should be viable for as long as the materials last, and some of them use silicon which would be good for 20, some use rubber in the mix witch should do 5 years.

So, if I managed to damage a key switch on a membrane keyboard in less than two years of use, can I still expect long service life with a properly maintained mechanical keyboard? (@allquixotic @Bob @JourneymanGeek @qasdfdsaq)

Bob
@bwDraco I'd suspect more of a faulty key.

Anonymous
@bwDraco well I still rotate my keyboards a lot more frequently than the time it takes to reach 50m

5:49 AM
@bwDraco probably

some of it is probably how it is kludged together, made by machine, can be off a bit and still "test" in QC the overall cheapness of the materials and all. They are after all sold for $5 to 70$ wheras a mechanical starts at $70. each switch item is a seperated unit.

Anonymous
@Psycogeek I still assume you clean them frequently

I guess it's worth the $170, then. I just need confirmation.
Yes, I do clean out my keyboard regularly.

I have had more than 1 keyboard and parts of it in the dishwasher.
@bwDraco it is worth about $100, the extra $70 better be for the super features, led lighting, and real warrenty support.

5:54 AM
Also, does a mechanical keyboard improve typing accuracy?

@bwDraco I get old school like mechanical from Pckeyboards.com for only 80$ USD customised. Mostly because when i started researching the problem, the "model M" was originally suggested. which still can be got on e-bay if one has PS2 type (adapted)

Okay...

Q: Do mechanical keyboards improve accuracy?

SklivvzA famous mechanical keyboard site claims that: Many mechanical keyboard fans rave at the loud, clicky sound they produce when using one of these keyboards. As mentioned above, the mechanical switches that make this loud noise are what’s ensuring the computer registers every single keystroke, ...

No answers.
I normally do about 50-55 wpm and I'd be surprised if a mechanical keyboard significantly improved that.

It improved my accuracy but only for certian reasons. 1) I wanted a big Beump to identify that i had switched (mostly done on buckling spring noisey bastards) By knowing when it switched i was less likely to reverse 2 items. 2) I do not touch type, i psyco type all over the board.

Anonymous
@Psycogeek idk if IBM model M != today's cherry switches

Anonymous
@bwDraco wow you need to improve that man

5:58 AM
@PatoSáinz They're fundamentally different technologies.
Not sure if that 50-55 figure still stands. It might be closer to 60 these days, but can't really say.

With the membrane keyboards and also with ergo stuff that had different Weights for different fingers i was very often made the connection out of order. I dont need weak pinkey keys.

Anonymous
@bwDraco it's still kinda low: do use all your fingers! also: do you consider yourself a touch-typist?

I prefer a board that has the same press weight across the whole of it, these adjustments for lighter weight outter keys are 100% touch typist , and only.

@PatoSáinz Yes, I do consider myself to be a touch typist (but need to occassionally peek at the keyboard to orient my fingers)
Haven't measured in a while.

Anonymous
@Psycogeek are there any links between CTS and force required to actuate a keyboard?

6:02 AM
My fingers are cold and that hurts things a bit.

@PatoSáinz all i know is model M was noisey like buckling spring, and very switch like, like all switches used to be. now even switches lost all the feel to them, the knowlege that the switch was pressed to the point of contact.

Just tried a one minute test, hit 83 WPM, but had nine errors, so ended up with 72 adjusted score.
That was my laptop keyboard as well.

@PatoSáinz what is CTS?

Anonymous
@Psycogeek carpal tunnel syndrome

Well, it's an established fact that mechanical keyboards are far more durable than ordinary keyboards. I guess I'm getting one.

6:06 AM
Oh, i dont know, muscles and joints , muscles need to be worked, joints need water (because joint lube is water based and turns crystaline when dried out) any thing else underestimates the human body for adaption.

@PatoSáinz @bwDraco closest to a model M is supposed to be cheery green

This Roccat Isku has seen some very extensive use over the last 20 months but I'm surprised that it could fail this quickly. Then again, membrane keyboards aren't exactly all that durable under heavy use...

@bwDraco hope you are not using linux as your primary OS

@tereško I'm running Windows 10.

good, because on rare occasion the mechanical keyboard seem to have issues with linux
they can get "stuck" at the software level

7:20 AM
o0

it's a strange bug

7:56 AM
Here's an interesting keyboard technology. It's developed by Cherry, and it aims to eliminate response delays at the keyswitch.
From what I'm reading, there's typically a ~20ms delay before a keypress registers because it has to account for the key switch bouncing (fluctuating between states before it settles).
This is a limitation caused by the key signal being processed digitally.
Cherry's RealKey technology aims to avoid this by literally measuring the signal from the key switch with an analog readout, avoiding the debounce delay.
I'm not sure how this works out in practice, but this is Cherry proprietary technology and they've decided to hold back licensing it a bit, instead using it in their own MX Board 6.0 gaming keyboard.
Each key is individually hooked up to the controller, which does an analog readout of the signal.
Huh. Oddly enough, the keyboard is actually aimed at typists but is well-suited for gamign as well.

@Bob @JourneymanGeek thanks for the game!
*passes out*

8:13 AM
That was fun. And I totally missed that dungeon on my own play through :p

8:26 AM
@all, do you still play Battlefield?

8:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek What are you guys playing through?

@MichaelFrank sword coast legends

9:35 AM
@bwDraco then it passes through a USB buffer and layers of driver junk leaving only the 50ms delay
I am still hooked through the PS2 because studies have shown that it has better responce time, i assume because it was (sort of) made for just one thing.
When you get layers of stuff in between, then each of the peoples puts in thier own layers , the OS, The drivers, the chipset & drivers, the game itself , the only thing that is going to fix that is "the Morodock Key Anticipation gaming keyboard" it knows what your thinking.

Do dogs have a thing about Apples? i gave both dogs the leftover apple pancakes that are loaded with apple, hidden by (for a dog) the batter, meaning they were mostly apple but just dont taste that way.
They both chucked it up after trying to digest it for some time.

Will Windows 10 OEM work on laptop serving as an upgrade to currently installed Windows 7?

@Psycogeek Should be OK. "Apple slices. Help to clean residue off a dog’s teeth, which helps to freshen her breath. Apples are a good source of fiber as well as vitamin A and C. Make sure to take out the seeds and the core before feeding to your dog, as these can be choking hazards." cesarsway.com/dog-care/nutrition/dog-approved-people-food
Maybe there is something in the batter they don't like?

could be they sat there for too long, although i didnt see any penicillion on it, it was being tossed for the humans would not eat it.
@Boris_yo are you asking about licencing and OEM activations or about the viability of the OS to work proper? Which from what i have read, you would first want to make sure the "hardware" will be supported with drivers made (or fixed) for win10.

@Boris_yo you should just upgrade from windows 10
@Psycogeek some dogs like the taste/smell
THat said, you probably shouldn't give human food to the average dog.
They might not be used to it

mine would not be used to it, carrots, and celery (with no problems) but mine wont just up and eat a (sliced) apple.

apple pies are also cooked down, somewhat tart (iirc) which might not be good...
fresh apples are common/ok

the other dogs , which is still younger and boored and somewhat stupid (all other dogs other than yours always are :-) will eat all kinds of stupid stuff but rarely barfs it up. Why the dog eats my sheets.

Huh. So I actually type at a decent rate but my accuracy is horrendous.
Anywhere from 55 to 70 wpm but with poor accuracy (~90%)

I type fast with high accuracy. But nobody cares.
Nobody's ever asked me about it at a job interview or tested me on it.

Did a bit of TypeRacer and it seems my speed is around 65 wpm after accounting for the poor accuracy.

In reality unless you're in a job that's primarily typing stuff written by others, it really doesn't matter.
Most people have a hard time thinking past 50wpm let alone typing

I guess I'll have to try typing slower and focus on accuracy. It'll help in the long run.

typing of the dead

> We have to ask everyone who gets over 100 wpm in a race to take a short typing test. This is done to discourage cheaters.
If you pass this test, you will not be asked to take it again until your speed improves by another 25% as long as you remain logged in. Please create an account to make it permanent.

Lol at this typeracing, someone else is typing at 18 wpm.
Wow, some people are doing 200wpm.
Argh, I can't seem to break 130. Wonder if it'd be any better with an expensive mechanical keyboard.

@qasdfdsaq zty.pe ?

@allquixotic Nah, TypeRacer.

@Bob @JourneymanGeek it took 4 hours to shovel out our driveway so that our cars might possibly be able to get to work tomorrow if the snow plow comes down the street
I feel great right now but the 3 Ibuprofen in my system are helping. I'll regret it later

Wouldn't the plow push more snow onto your driveway?

@MichaelFrank not onto the driveway, no... it tends to create a super-dense "shelf" of snow-ice mixture at the end, but that's going to happen whether we want it to or not, and not shoveling out means that shelf will be even thicker and heavier than otherwise

@allquixotic o.O

@PatoSáinz it's useless against thick banks of snow
@Bob this is weird... usually my mains nominal voltage is 120V but right now my UPS is pulling 110V
I think the grid is under heavy strain right now

@allquixotic: What is your relationship to @somequixotic?

probably snow blowers and electric heaters (some peoples' primary heat may have failed)
@qasdfdsaq he was me when I changed my name
