12:00 AM
@DavidCarlisle :-)
@Rico TeX is fun, isn't it?

@FaheemMitha I !@#ing checked everything but the documentclass options.

@Rico That's bugs for you. Always in the last place you look.
With LaTeX it's extra fun, because most of the time I have no idea what the error messages mean. And they're usually misleading anyway.

@egreg interestingly setting draft=false for minted only does not work for me

@Rico ^^^^^
@Rico Your very same example, just with \usepackage[draft=false]{minted}

@egreg works there but not in my main document... sometime is really hate TeX
hm I'll search tomorrow but thank you in the first place!
@egreg oh! I fixed it by accident... just added \RequirePackage to the .sty

3 hours later…
3:26 AM
I feel like I'm cheating using TeX macros to replace university names in statements of purpose

3 hours later…
6:29 AM
@egreg ooh cool! :)

6:47 AM
@Christian: gotta love your name tag. :)

7:09 AM
I haz teh flu. :(

7:45 AM
Hi. When I enter a long chain of equalities in LyX, the vertical spacing in the PDF changes dramatically. Are there any packages I can include that will not alter the vertical spacing of the text?

@TheSubstitute If I were to make a guess: Document --> Settings --> LaTeX preamble, add \allowdisplaybreaks. If that doesn't help, try with \raggedbottom instead. However as I don't know anything at all about how your document is set up, there's no guarantee any of them will do anything.

ooh Scorpion eating a bagel.

@TorbjørnT. \raggedbottom works. Now there's a large space before the chain since it starts on the following page. Is there a way to allow some of the chain to appear on both pages, or should I use two separate chains?

@TheSubstitute How are those equalities typeset?

@TorbjørnT. I'm not sure what you mean. I'm in math mode. I'm using AMS article. Insert -> Math -> Display.

7:58 AM
@TheSubstitute So you have several of those in a row? That's not the right way, use gather (or align, if you want to align the equals sign), Insert --> Math --> AMS gather Environment. Ctrl + enter to add a line break in those. Then add \allowdisplaybreaks to the preamble.

@TorbjørnT. Thank you! That worked. Should one always use AMS gather Environment when displaying over more than one line?
I was originally using Ctrl+ in Display.

@TheSubstitute It depends a little bit what you're after. For a series of equations with no alignment, gather is best. If you want alignment, then align, as mentioned. If you have one very long equation that should be split over several lines, then multline might be best. If you want a single equation number for a whole group of equations, then use a normal equation environment (so same as for a single numbered equation), and add a split, aligned or gathered environment within that.
Read amsmaths manual, for more info.
@TheSubstitute Ctrl + Enter? That seems to give an eqnarray environment, which should not be used, see tug.org/TUGboat/tb33-1/tb103madsen.pdf

...perhaps this is incentive enough to hat? Yes, it's a verb.

8:33 AM
@Werner thank for your nice edit on my answer :-)

8:44 AM
@RomainPicot You're welcome... glad I helped! :)

@Werner ooh

@PauloCereda Does your duck have a Halloween costume?

@Alenanno I have Christmas costumes. :)

@Alenanno You're back in time, a little bit. Halloween was six weeks ago :-P

@PauloCereda Ah right, it's not October anymore lol but so it's supposed to be the Christmas one?
@ChristianHupfer A Halloween costume is forever! :D

8:51 AM
@Alenanno Because Oct 31 = Dec 25. :)

@Alenanno I am constantly wearing my Halloween costume -- I look frightening :-P
@PauloCereda Nerd humour :D

@ChristianHupfer Quack! :)

@ChristianHupfer Am I missing something?

@Alenanno Some upvotes perhaps? I don't know :-P

@ChristianHupfer Maybe, but I meant the humor lol

8:55 AM
@ChristianHupfer: oh no, no more name tags, you are that old bloke from the balloon cartoon thingy.

@PauloCereda I don't know what you're talking about

@ChristianHupfer Das Hat? :)

@PauloCereda Oh, you mean the Winterbash hats?

@Alenanno: the bee duck is to support Black Forest cookies! :)
@ChristianHupfer Yep! :)

@PauloCereda I could switch too that frightening mask stuff

8:58 AM
@PauloCereda Why would "Oct 31 = Dec 25." be nerd humor? That's what I was wondering :P

@Alenanno Only "nerds" understand octal and hexadecimal numbers ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Ducks are good with arbitrary bases. :)

Oh, Andrew Swann wears a nice whig :D

@PauloCereda ducks are good with orange sauce

@PauloCereda Most the ducks do live on the base too ;-)

9:00 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh know, you meanie!
@ChristianHupfer All bases belong to ducks. :)

@PauloCereda: Spot the Duck eating bloke @DavidCarlisle ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I strongly doubt that's a requirement. :P
I... need... more... hats!

@Alenanno I usually go to the milliners to deal with that

@Alenanno I've got 6 apparently but I don't wear them

@Alenanno Oh, I that you're wearing one, but scrolling showed me: It was only a stain on my screen :D :D

9:07 AM
@JosephWright Who/what are those? :P
@ChristianHupfer ahahah! :D

@JosephWright should we remove the ini files from the luatex85 repo?

@DavidCarlisle I think you should!

@Alenanno People who sell hats
@DavidCarlisle Yes

@JosephWright lol very funny. :P

@DavidCarlisle Done

9:08 AM
@Alenanno Calm down, I've only four of them (yet) all by accidence rather

@DavidCarlisle I've opted out entirely (but the winter bash thing still tells me how many I would have in potentia)

@JosephWright oops I did it as well I assume git will sort that out:-)

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle Looks like we are OK
*   e782cc1 Merge branch 'master' of github.com:josephwright/luatex85
|\
| * cb71934 ini files now in separate tex-ini-files repo
| * 58d06c1 fix checksum
* | adb1763 Remove .ini files
|/
* 0806b08 split up luatex85.sty into two packages, and add a modified ifpdf package

@ChristianHupfer I have one by accident, but it's not particularly cool.

@JosephWright need to update that alias file to match what I think I understood from Hans reply that a couple of those pdfvariable will be removed (and so presumably will generate an error) incidentally unlike a tex csname there doesn't seem to be a way to tell if a pdfvariable thing is defined (other than checking luatexversion, and the manual) \pdfvariable zzzzz is an error.

9:15 AM
@DavidCarlisle Once we get v0.87 presumably a check for pdf.set<thing> will work at the Lua end
@DavidCarlisle KB is not entirely happy with all of this :-)

@JosephWright I can't imagine why!

9:29 AM
@DavidCarlisle I think the .ini files are nearly done

9:39 AM
@ChristianHupfer You used @PauloCereda in your example? :D

@Alenanno No, only his avatar :D

@ChristianHupfer What do you mean, that's really him! :P
He's a duck!

@Alenanno That's really scary /shivering

See:
Dec 10 at 19:34, by Paulo Cereda
@Vogel612 I am a duck dressed as a bee!
And he also quacks from time to time.

@Alenanno unbe(e)arable ;-)
@Alenanno: I fear, it's an x/y - question ... "I want this and that ...but you answered that -- could you do that too and add this ..."

9:43 AM
@Alenanno quack preposterous! :)

@ChristianHupfer Is that what they're called?
@PauloCereda :P

@Alenanno Yes: Asking for x but requesting for y

@ChristianHupfer Interesting. This reminds me: I miss studying Geometry in Middle school.
I so miss that. I suppose that's why I love packages for drawing geometry. :D

@Alenanno You can use a book on Geometry :-P

@ChristianHupfer What have books ever done for us? :)

9:47 AM
@ChristianHupfer Yeah but I mean, going to school with rulers, compass... :P

@PauloCereda Yes, they are good to kill a fly :D

@ChristianHupfer ooh

@ChristianHupfer What did you mean here?
Sorry, you're not providing really help to help you. A bad way would be \vskip\baselineskip or whatever — Christian Hupfer 3 mins ago

@Alenanno None of my students has a compass

@ChristianHupfer You teach geometry? O_O

9:49 AM
@Alenanno: do you prefer a reindeer duck or a santa one?

@Alenanno Physics and Mathematics ... geometry is not a main part in curriculum for German Abitur

@PauloCereda Reindeer. Animal cross-over! :D

@Alenanno Done. :)

@ChristianHupfer Oh, strangely enough, those were among my fave subjects ever. I even had better marks than languages. :D
Maybe I should have become an astrophysicist.
That's the only thing I would have done in that field.

@Alenanno Ducks are good with Physics. :)

9:52 AM
@Alenanno I am/was an Astrophysicist actually.

@ChristianHupfer That's an awesome job. :)

@Alenanno Depends on the topic ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Which one you don't like?

@Alenanno Galaxies, boring stuff, in my point of view

9:54 AM
@ChristianHupfer, @Alenanno: ^^^

@ChristianHupfer Why? Give me the short answer (I'm sure there is a longer more accurate one). :D

@PauloCereda Are you violating our human rights again?

@PauloCereda listening

@ChristianHupfer This is good. :)

@Alenanno A personal opinion (short enough?)

9:55 AM
@ChristianHupfer lol I meant, what do you find boring about them?
By short I meant concise. Yes, that's a better term.

@Alenanno It's a very broad topic in galaxies and not really structured

@ChristianHupfer I see

@Alenanno Maybe Christian preferred the book. :)

@PauloCereda Usually I throw books after flys to kill them, but I am inclined to throw books after other animals, starting right way in the alphabet with .... ducks ... (my today's alphabet starts with D:-P)

@ChristianHupfer What about S for students?

10:02 AM
@Alenanno For S I use a 16 - ton - weights and Students are no animals ... they are worse :D

Q: TeX-sx badges and medals

LucasHow many of you actively chase these badges and bronze, silver, and gold medals that can be earned through various achievements?

12:23 PM
@egreg why the space before the \pagebreak (won't the space hacks just remove it and put it at the end anyway?)

12:47 PM
@egreg Egreg Hat Watch.

@JosephWright It's neck to neck!
I'm listed as having one hat, but I have two hats! I've been de-hatted.

@FaheemMitha So you have

I demand a recount.

@JosephWright: yesterday I saw a full Sherlock Holmes collection with BBC's Sherlock in the cover. Dreadful. :)

1:15 PM
@egreg google calendar just reminded me to remind you of this, so you don't make the same mistake next year:
Jan 2 at 12:17, by egreg
@DavidCarlisle Sorry, I forgot to put this in my list of new year's resolutions.

@FaheemMitha I demand trial by (TeX-based) combat!
@PauloCereda !

@JosephWright As if they were the very same. :)

@DavidCarlisle What about another\pagebreak case?
@DavidCarlisle I forgot what it was about. :P

@egreg that's OK isn't it?

@DavidCarlisle Is it? I see a difference with another\pagebreak[4] case

1:35 PM
@egreg ah I see what you mean, but that's ensuring that there is a space token after the \pagebreak not putting one before (although the space hacks mean that is the same thing, i agree)

2 hours later…
3:33 PM
Are questions with PDF viewer issues off topic? Like this one? tex.stackexchange.com/q/144969/4778.

@Alenanno Most times, since we cannot really solve them.

Look at this one

Q: Problem with a micro symbol on y-axis

Aftab Ahmed KhanI have this figure.1 in pdf format. The micro symbol in the y-axis label is fine in it but when i import it to latex to insert in my paper. The micro symbol changes to some kind of alpha symbol. Don't know why it is happening. Thank you

It had the same issue, see the comments.

3:52 PM
@JosephWright That sounds way too athletic.
Actually, way too TeX-based.

4:11 PM
@Alenanno: How do you like the reindeer?

@PauloCereda you just think if you stick on fake antlers people will think you have earned a hat.

@DavidCarlisle Ahah awesome!

@DavidCarlisle LOL

4:27 PM
Ducks don't usually have antlers. Maybe a mutant Duck.

4:38 PM
@FaheemMitha @PauloCereda: Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Ducks ;-)

@ChristianHupfer The antlers aren't real. :)

DUCK POWER!

@PauloCereda Are you sure? :D

4:59 PM
This really sucks! /sob

@ChristianHupfer we could downvote you a bit and you could try again

@DavidCarlisle: Too late ... I got 25 more just now ... But you're so kind you would downvote me ;-)
@DavidCarlisle: I could have unaccepted some of your answers to my questions :-P

@ChristianHupfer try again for 66666 (but you'll need some downvotes to get you out of that 5-0 sequence
@ChristianHupfer oh yes I forgot all about questions as a way of changing the parity of the total.

@DavidCarlisle I could ask a stupid question and accept an answer to get a 6 at the end.
@DavidCarlisle You should give questioning a chance... come on ;-)

@ChristianHupfer yes not managed to do that yet so it's quite hard for me to change parity (and annoying when some vim user downvotes me on a day that I'm not rep capped and changes it)
@ChristianHupfer I'll ask @egreg how to do it.

5:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle: There's life without being repcapped, believe me :D

@DavidCarlisle Unknown, sorry.

5:34 PM
Lol

6:05 PM
@ChristianHupfer What sucks?
@ChristianHupfer Is it that you are now a mailman?

@FaheemMitha No, I missed the 55555 by just one 1 rep point

@FaheemMitha :-)

@ChristianHupfer Oh.

@ChristianHupfer Just to make you envious. ^^^^^^^

@egreg Is that a historical score?

6:07 PM
@FaheemMitha Yes.
@FaheemMitha I'm almost double of that. :)

@egreg Well, you've got 444,444 coming up.

@FaheemMitha No, unless I get some downvote. ;-)
@FaheemMitha I'm still in a 2-7 cycle

@egreg Why, because you can't get there as a multiple of 10s?

@FaheemMitha I'd need a –8.

@egreg How/why do you have a secret hat?

6:10 PM
@FaheemMitha It's a secret!

@egreg Tell us!

@FaheemMitha All achieved by treacherous tick-stealing and complaining ;-)

@FaheemMitha I know no more than you do.

@egreg ok
@ChristianHupfer You're channeling David. :-)

@FaheemMitha Of course I do, that's a natural law :D

6:12 PM
@ChristianHupfer :-)

@JosephWright :-)

gee! all symmetrical!

11:03 PM
Hello!!

When I use the following:
\begin{enumerate}[label=(\alph*)]
\item ...
\item ...
\end{enumerate}

I get
(α')
(β')

Is it possible to get
(α) , (β)
or α) , β)
but without ' ?

11:42 PM
@MaryStar I think it is. Let me look around.
2
A: Enumerate list with greek letters

egregIf I use \renewcommand{\textdexiakeraia}{} I get no apostrophe (properly, number sign) in second level enumerated lists. The symbol for 6 is “stigma” (U+03DB); if you want to output the combination στ instead of ϛ, you can redefine \textstigma: \renewcommand{\textstigma}{\textsigma\texttau} ...

Now I get (α) , (β) . Thanks a lot!! @egreg
I want to write a table of notations. Is there a specific environment that I could use for that?

@MaryStar itemize or description

But there have to be three columns, the notaion, the description and and which page it appears for the first time. How do we get these three columns? @egreg

11:57 PM
@MaryStar You may want to look at the nomencl package or at glossaries
