GamrCorpsIntroduction Help! I accidentally dropped my TI-84 calculator out my window (don't ask how) and it broke. @Doorknob You should have a handler for a capital there. :P

@ThomasKwa Not yet sure if the input works correctly. Then why'd you post it? :/
@Doorknob VTasdksadf is right; at present the substitution would result in "Yes. Delicious, terrible fruit."

@AlexA. No it wouldn't

5:40 PM
Is that because of the i modifier?

yes

So it would be "Yes. terrible, terrible fruit."

carrot.jpg

Oh, okay. So it doesn't handle the case in the substitution.

nope

5:42 PM
@Dennis Carrots aren't fruit

@Doorknob Is it possible to write a single regex substitution that would handle case in the substitution text?
@TheDoctor I'm pretty sure that's false.

Q: Why does my cat (almost) constantly purr while he's awake?

Monica CellioI've heard cats purr to show contentment (though humans who want that to be true may be imagining it). WebMD suggests they purr (1) to get our attention ("feed me!"); (2) when content ("petting time"); (3) when anxious ("oh no, the vet!"); and (4) for healing. These reasons seem to be somewhat ...

Y U no like AdBlock?

because it blocks ads

why is that bad?

6:01 PM
People who depend on ad revenue from their site don't get it.
(Disclaimer: I use AdBlock)
I think they introduced a feature to whitelist certain sites so that ads will still appear on those sites.
Scooby @Doo ^

@AlexA. This has improved my life so much.

a.) there is absolutely no negative to having ads on your screen
b.) the positives are that you're supporting the sites that you use
c.) some ads are actually interesting (gasp)
d.) using an adblocker undermines how the internet works
etc.

a) My internet connection is slow and I pay per byte.

ah >.> Okay, well (luckily) I don't have that problem.

@Doorknob a) The adds could be offensive. (e.g. naked Russian woman on your screen)
I am on AOL when that happens FYI

6:04 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I have never had that happen
and if it does, you can simply not use the website that serves them

... I can't not use my email.

get a better email provider? >_<

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ it doesn't matter where you are currently, the ads are based on your past history.. :P

@Optimizer O_O

it totally reflects your choice of pom :P

6:06 PM
the last time I heard the phrase "AOL" was at my grandparents' house :P

@Optimizer I don't do that stuff. Coding is fine for me.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ code porn

also

(I also use GMail)

@Doorknob Point a is subjective. I agree with points b and c. I don't understand what you mean with point d. I wouldn't say that the Internet runs on ads or anything like that.
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ IMAP it to a local email client.

6:08 PM
THAT IS ALL BS. EMAIL DOMAIN DOES NOT REFLECT PERSONALITIES

@AlexA. I'll do that iff I have time.

@AlexA. Why's point a subjective (unless you pay for each byte of bandwidth or something, like Dennis does)?
and sure, the Internet could still exist without ads, you'd just probably be paying for everything

I wish it was like that. I only have free (as in beer and ads) and paid apps on my phone. If it comes with ads and doesn't have an ad-free version (or isn't worth the money), I delete it immediately.

@Doorknob A negative for some people is being constantly bombarded with advertising messages, not all of which have positive messages. (For example, ads targeted toward women which body shame them in a roundabout way. Like "you need makeup to be beautiful" kind of thing.)

6:11 PM
so either a.) ignore them or b.) don't use sites that have those ads
Although... I can see how that would be hard to ignore

How do you know which sites would have those ads in advance?

what do you mean?

you can also use ad blockers
3

if you frequently use a site that has ads such as those, just... don't
@Optimizer ಠ_ಠ

my option is much more saner than totally not using sites that have ads

6:13 PM
@Doorknob When you arrive at a new site, it could have those ads. Perhaps the site content is exactly what you're looking for but you don't agree with the advertising.

and specially saner than ignoring dancing naked girl gifs/flash

@Optimizer I don't use an ad blocker, and I have never run into any of the problems that are being described here.

more so when flash is getting released with more and more day 0 vulnerabilities

why do you have flash installed -_-

Why don't you?

6:14 PM
Disable Flash.

@AlexA. hmmm... yeah, that's a good point

@Doorknob then you are anyways rendering a very large portion of ads useless. its almost same as using ad blocker

I just use the nice rule in CSS [class~="ad"], [id~="ad"] {display: none;}. This effectively blocks all ads.

@AlexA. Well, I've never had any of these problems without an adblocker ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@Doorknob that is because you let them track you and know ur preferences so that ads are customized as per your user profile. If you do not let them track you, they are forced to show random highest bid ads

6:15 PM
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ <button id='add-thingy'>Add a thingy</button>
@Optimizer ok, so? what's your point?

ok, so you are against Online Privacy?

Haha that's kind of a logical leap

that is my point

... could you be more specific?

I am not sure how I can be more specific as I have ads blocked and nobody is tracking me to know my specifics. Your case might be different.

6:17 PM
Advertisers collecting personal data to display targeted ads rather than remaining anonymous.

I have no problems with that as you have just stated it, no.

Like one time on Facebook I joking said #thuglife and now I always get Tupac ads.

Seriously?

Yes

AdBlock 1 : 0 Facebook

6:19 PM
@Doorknob if you are not against letting random sites know ur preferences, your tastes, your email id, etc etc to completely know who you are and what you are, you might as well share your username and passwords for those sites with everyone

... that does not at all follow from what I just said

It does and if you fail to see it, maybe you do not know to what extent ads tracking tracks you

@Dennis Either that was before I used AdBlock or AdBlock doesn't block all FB ads. (Can't recall which and I don't feel like logging onto FB right now.)

@Optimizer I am fairly certain that I am well informed about what information ad companies have access to about me.

I doubt that.

6:22 PM
I agree with Doorknob on this one. Unless sites that require login explicitly share information with advertisers (e.g. Facebook), with a little research you can figure out what information is available to advertisers just by regular browsing.

Anonymous
I dislike obtrusive/offensive/annoying ads. There is a high enough ratio of those to unobtrusive/unoffensive/discreet ads that I view adblocker as worth using

^

Anonymous
carrot.jpg

Again, I've never had that problem

6:24 PM
You are assuming that you on the first hand (1) know what all sites have been tracking you, it can be first party, third party, ads, whatnot (2) know what all they actually collect but not really use. They could be collecting a lot more just to sell off data

FB (facebook) and BF (brainfuck) o_o

and I speak from first hand experience in the industry

@Optimizer Even if you were to tell me that every single website I've ever visited has collected as much information as is humanly possible, compiled it all into one big data dump, and shared it among themselves, I'd be pretty okay with that.

Anonymous
I also disable Flash, but not all terrible ads are Flash-based. If I know a site depends on ads and has unobtrusive advertising, I'll whitelist them.

6:26 PM
@quartata yeah :P why?

Well I'm going to try to do it in SNES 65c816 assembly wish me luck

10 mins ago, by Optimizer
ok, so you are against Online Privacy?

@quartata haha, ping me if/when you do :D
@Optimizer that's an extremely broad term

If I can get it in 5000 bytes I will call it my masterpiece and quit code golf forever

@Optimizer I don't think he's against it so much as just indifferent.

6:26 PM
@Doorknob :P
First step: figure out how to RNG correctly

@AlexA. carrot.png (I expect my carrots to be high-quality, with no compression artifacts)

Good luck @quartata (though don't quit code-golf D:)

@AlexA. you can either be with it or against it. There is no such thing as indifferent. Its the same as saying terrorism in XYZ country does not bother me.

that's... not true

6:28 PM
@Optimizer Uh I don't think that's at all the same...

Anonymous
Hey let's not be comparing terrorism to terrible advertising

Anonymous
At least we're doing something about terrorism

So just initing VBLANK and the SNES registers takes 5000 bytes
So it looks like I won't be quitting
I mean, I COULD try to golf that part and risk blowing up my only flash cart
Probably should do this on an emulator actually...

@Optimizer unnecessarily emotionally weighted metaphors aside, it is absolutely possible to have no firm stance on a given issue

Anonymous
Test in emulator first obviously

6:29 PM
A flash cartridge is one of several cartridges containing flash memory that have been developed for use in video game consoles. These cartridges enable homebrew applications and games to be used. The capacity of the cartridges can range from 64 Mbit up to 8 Gbit (Commercial carts range from 32 Mbit to 256 Mbit). More recent cartridges use external memory cards as memory, in place of onboard memory, such as Compact Flash, Secure Digital, etc. memory cards. These cartridges remain the best-known way to create and distribute homebrew games for many consoles, such as the Game Boy Advance. (another...

@Doorknob ok, take for example - you visit an online market place where you finally purchase something and put in your CC details. Now that can be easily tracked by third party tracking sites.

@Mego Yeah that's what I'll do

@quartata Didn't realize "cart" was intended to be short for "cartridge."

Anonymous

@AlexA. Ah ok

6:30 PM
@Mego All I know is my gut says "maybe."

@Optimizer hopefully that site's using HTTPS... and hopefully you're not giving credit card info to a site you don't trust

I don't enter any personal information into non-HTTPS sites.

@Doorknob gloryto.russia.ru

@Doorknob that's the thing, even your trusted site is showing ads and third party trackings. Plus https has nothing to do with it
all happens on client side
@AlexA. that does not prevent you from being tracked. HTTPS only protects MIM attacks over the network

Keep in mind that internet advertising is a necessary evil, just like all advertising. Sure, lots of ads are annoying and maybe compromise some privacy, but there are thousands of websites/bloggers/youtubers whose main source of revenue is advertising.

6:32 PM
@Optimizer I would be very, very surprised if Paypal et al. freely and publicly shares the credit card numbers of all of its customers with third parties

@Calvin'sHobbies Think of the server kitties. How will they get their food without ads?

@Doorknob feel free to be surprised then.

and what's your source for this, ah, radical claim?

@Doorknob plus, paypal is not the only place where you put in your CC

"there are ads on this site" != "there is a keylogger and screen recorder on this site and a shady guy watching over your shoulder via tiny cameras mounted behind you"
