10:14 AM
@DavidPostill Well, that part is true at least.
The whole point of SE is Q&A with community moderation.
The whole concept of closing posts is what a traditional forum mod would do.
Diamond mods just have a bit more say and a lot more info.
And of course access to some more dangerous options (suspension, etc.)
But, yea, that post reads a whole lot like a troll.
@jokerdino 1348 days.
Still consecutive :D

@Bob: suspensions are hardly dangerous ;p
AHHH
NOW IT TELLS ME.
"Windows 10 cannot be installed because your processor does not support NX"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "Now"?
@JourneymanGeek Which machine?

@Bob: the R61 I've been trying to upgrade the last few days

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Specs?

I tried every possible method ;p
@Bob: core 2 duo T7250, 1 gb ram?

10:25 AM
that's quite an old phone you have there

Bob
> Execute Disable Bit ‡ Yes

:D

Bob
...it does support NX
Make sure you have it enabled in the firmware settings.

._.
I'll check

Bob
10:26 AM
You pretty much have to go back to P4 to find CPUs without NX support.

However this was the first intellegible error message I have gotten so far
Naturally its wrong ;p
DEP is enabled

Bob
@JourneymanGeek DEP in Windows? or DEP in firmware?

in bios

Bob
Actually IIRC NX is in all 64-bit CPUs.

annd
it now can't find the OS

Bob
10:30 AM
o.O

mental note. Grab the key
I'm gonna go the hell with it, reinstall windows 7 from scratch then try upgrading

Bob
o.O

Its an old, backed up system ;p
and while I wait
let me confirm this has nx

10:58 AM
yup
the updater is full of crap ;p

Bob
o.O

anyway

Bob
Are you trying to install the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

32 bit
Media created from the same system too

Bob
> NX can be turned off in the BIOS. Based on available telemetry data, it appears that one percent of the systems that are running Windows® 7 have NX turned off because of a misconfiguration in the BIOS setting.

11:03 AM
I'm going to reinstall windows 7 32 bit, then see if I can upgrade from there.
@Bob: checked using coreinfo

Bob
> All 64-bit processors support NX because they are Address Windowing Extensions (AWE)-aware.

its enabled.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Does that check if the CPU ID supports it or if it's currently enabled?
Big difference.

driving lesson done, urgh

11:04 AM
I used this

that's hard brain work

Bob
> To meet the Windows 8 requirement for NX feature and SSE2 instructions support, the Windows 8 kernel checks for these features during initialization. Systems that do not support NX or SSE2 cannot initialize a Windows 8 kernel. Systems that can disable NX in firmware have that option overridden; therefore, misconfigured firmware does not cause boot to fail. An attempt to boot a system that does not have NX or SSE2 support results in a bugcheck. Users get the UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR code (0x0000005D) error, together with four lines of information on a 32-bit system

@Bob: Here's the thing
I've tried about... a dozen attempts at installs from usb key and update
this error turned up once

Bob
... ... :S

annnnd
Its got a XP partition as the initial partition
which I have not used in years
so a fresh install makes sense

11:15 AM
So I want to install Ubuntu on my Laptop. I first put Ubuntu on the USB key I used to install Windows on the machine. Of course, it can't boot Ubuntu of that same key. For some cryptic reason. So I try another key, which boots (yay) …right into kernel panic
Why?! O___o

Bob
uhh
:S

why not? ;p

Bob
@OliverSalzburg What is this amazing laptop?
@OliverSalzburg Because it's you, apparently.

@Bob Some Acer TravelMate

Bob
Technology hates you :P

11:16 AM
@Bob I tend to agree!

"Acer"
There's your problem!

Bob
if (user.name == "OliverSalzburg") panic();

@JourneymanGeek So Ubuntu is not compatible with Acer devices?

No, Acer is just shit ;p

Well, I can put a Windows OS that was released 6 years ago on that USB key and it will install just fine
Why can't the same thing work with the latest release of Ubuntu?

11:17 AM
(also, depends on the nature of the kernel panic)

I was under the impression that we've progressed

Bob
I wonder where "USB key" comes from.
I normally say "flash drive" (flash memory, obv, though with SSDs now that could be a little ambiguous). "USB drive" works too but that could mean spinning rust.

You could also say thumb drive

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, pen and thumb drive confuse me too.

which amusingly is a generisized trade mark.

Bob
11:18 AM
I'd love to know where those names come from.

In Germany, we usually call them "USB Stick"
It's a USB-based flash memory storage device thing

Ok, fresh install coming up. If I accidentally type my windows key here, please delete it ;p

Bob
@OliverSalzburg But... my wifi dongle is also a USB stick! :P

dongle
Now that's a funny word

Bob
lol
@JourneymanGeek I've lost track of the number of times I've typed my desktop password in here.

11:21 AM
lol

Bob
But I don't really care anyway. It's there as a deterrent, nothing more.

I'm not making these words up, I'm just adopting them :D

Bob
Anyone determined could get in pretty damn easily. No FDE.

Bob
120 GB SSD for $55. Huh.

11:22 AM
o0

Bob
But I've got nowhere to put it :P

There you go
Of course, now the Imgur upload in Greenshot is broken as well

What did you use to make the usb key?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I can just picture you leaving a trail of destruction in your wake :P

11:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek Universal USB Installer

And are you trying to do a persistant live boot, non persistant live boot or a installer?
I think its your tool that at's fault.

@JourneymanGeek I just want to live boot to see if Ubuntu will run, before I do a persistent install

Bob
YUMI is my go-to flash drive installer creator.

And it's already proving to be the right strategy

11:29 AM
@OliverSalzburg: could you give rufus a shot?

@JourneymanGeek I also have UNetbootin. Let me give that a try
I can also do rufus, sure

ugh
unetbootin is obsolete

I didn't know it was such an intricate task to create a bootable USB device

@OliverSalzburg: well, I've spent a good chunk of 3 days on a win10 upgrade

11:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek rufus is way better than unetbootin

@HackToHell: agreed.
Also works with windows
in fact, I'm using it right now

Bob
At one point I had a multiboot drive with half a dozen systems on it.
Which reminds me I need to build another one soon.

@JourneymanGeek That's nothing compared to the time you'll spend cursing at it once the upgrade is done ;P

@OliverSalzburg: which will be 0 ;p
I'll pop it in a sleeve and store it as a spare laptop.

@JourneymanGeek Meaning you removed it already?

Bob
11:33 AM
Hm. What would I need...

It runs win 7 at the moment, used to run XP

Bob
Windows 7/8/10, Kubuntu, Knoppix, OpenSUSE...

so doing a clean win7 install

Bob
Memtest86+

11:33 AM
if that fails, **** ms.

Bob
Might chuck Hirens on there if I can find that copy again.
And, of course, need a flash drive.
That might be the hardest part o.O

Drive done, booting now

lol
@Bob: I have... er... 4 in reach

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have a literal pile of 8 GB drives.
But for a large multiboot collection I'd need at least 16. Maybe 32.
(I bought 10x 8 GB Cruzer Facets for $35 a while back...)

lol
I have a pair of those super tiny sandisks
16 and 32 gb
8 gb OTG capable one
then a blade for doing installs

11:39 AM
Now I get the same error I got with the first drive
Booting in insecure mode
Could not get fio for li->DeviceHandle: 2
Failed to find fs
Failed to load image
Failed to find fs
Failed to load image

Bob
YUMI! :D
:P

@Bob Running
Maybe I should just burn a NetInst CD ;P

Bob
If the normal Ubuntu unpack doesn't work you could always try the unlisted ISO options (GRUB from RAM as a last resort).
Should work around any funniness with USB drivers.

YUMI drive looking good...
And there's the desktop
I'm also giving rufus another try. This time with a device check first ;P

12:09 PM
Hmmm. Need to create a Win10 boot USB.
If I reinstall Win10 on a machine where I've just replaced the HDD, it should reactivate itself, right?
I'd estimate that there's a 20% chance that if I power this machine off then 1 of the drives (good old RAID0) won't spin back up again...

12:27 PM
@Mokubai: In theory

Welp, if nothing else I have the Win7 product key on the case, and the Win8 upgrade that allowed the Win10 upgrade so if it doesn't work...

Suddenly everyone is installing Win10 o0

@JourneymanGeek From ZP: "Fine in theory, but theories are treacherous things that can at any moment disintegrate like a biscuit raft"
@HackToHell That's because it's the awesome lovechild of Windows 7 and 8.

@Mokubai: exactly

Well, my first port of call will be a copy of Clonezilla or something, but should the worst happen then I'll have to reinstall.
What are people using to clone Windows installs these days?

12:39 PM
I swear by veem endpoint backup at the moment
Needs a login, but it works pretty damned well
for oneoffs macrium, but that's getting rarer

Awesome. Hopefully have a new drive within a week so I'll check those out. Cheers @JourneymanGeek

Bob
1:28 PM
@OliverSalzburg :)

This is actually the first time I set up a Linux-based desktop that I seriously plan on using

Bob
lol
I've got a couple in VMs but I don't think I could ever use it as my primary desktop.
I've got OpenSUSE on a laptop and it kinda works but I've wasted hours tweaking configs to get it working, let alone running smoothly.
In contrast, Windows at least works out of the box :\
Hm.
Can anyone suggest a decent fast flash drive?
By fast I'm expecting, say, 10MB/s sequential write and 20MB/s sequential read at a minimum. But they aren't hard minimums.

1:45 PM
@OliverSalzburg: my brix runs fedora
tho the main reason I have a desktop at the moment is for virt-manager when I use it, and my torrent client

Bob
Looking at wirecutter... nooooope, not paying >$1/GB.
"only claims 70 MB/s write speeds, which is just too slow" ?!?!

2:19 PM
Networking in C is a pain in the arse :'(
Why oh why are thou in c

Finally got the green light to order cable Internet service.
@Bob: Last time I used Rufus to generate a bootable USB drive (from the openSUSE 13.2 DVD image), I didn't have any trouble.

Bob
2:37 PM
@DragonLord I have nothing against Rufus.
YUMI is just my go-to.
It works well for me.
And I like having the multiboot option available.
Hmm... do I want a 128 GB flash drive? :P

Why is tech stuff so expensive to ship to Australia?

Bob
@DragonLord Nah, not in general.

Adobe CEO did a good job of explaining that

Bob
Just... if I ever order off Amazon I have to make sure I stay away from any third-party sellers.
They tend to have ridiculous shipping rates. Not entirely sure how those are calculated.
@HackToHell Ah, yes. Have you tried Creative Cloud?
It's where the future is!

@Bob Creative Cloud is affordable and gets you free updates for the duration of the subscription, but I don't like losing the perpetual license option

@Bob Why don't they just pull perpetual licenses out of the market then?

Bob
@DragonLord Seems to be what they're doing now. but the reason I mentioned CC is because it's become a bit of a running joke now.
"Why is it so expensive here?" "We think Creative Cloud is the future. <ramble ramble ramble>"

I think I just caught myself over-remoting. I have a remote desktop session to the laptop, where I copied commands out of the browser and pasted them into an SSH session ...to the very same laptop

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Hey, whatever works! :P

It just felt right

2:56 PM
@Bob In business, when you're this high up, it's hard to directly answer questions like this without potentially damaging your business.

Bob
@DragonLord I understand why they might do this. Doesn't make the action any better.

If the CEO told the truth ("because we want to discontinue perpetual licenses"), people will boycott their products.

Bob
Also, the better course of action would have been to just refuse to answer the question or direct them to someone else.
@DragonLord And that is not the answer.
Perhaps you are not aware of the situation.
IIRC, at the time (2013) the AUD was actually worth more than the USD (peaking around 1 AUD = 1.10 USD).
Meanwhile, the CS6 package cost over $1000 more.
Specifically in Australia.
> The price for the all-encompassing Master Collection CS6 costs US$2599 in the United States, but Australians will pay $1350 more, at $3949. For the Production Premium model, US customers will pay US$1899, while Australian customers will pay $2886. For the basic Design Standard package, Australians pay $676 more than their US counterparts, at $1975 compared to US$1299.
That has nothing to do with discontinuing perpetual licences.
That is price gouging in the Australian market. To the point where it was cheaper for people to fly to the US (> $1000 in plane tickets), buy a copy there, and fly back.
If you think that has anything to do with the changing business model, then his rambling worked and you bought into it.

> From our market analysis, the economics of the Australian market allows us to charge higher prices.
Was that hard?
Or would saying this cripple the company (any shareholders want to sell off on this news?)

Bob
@DragonLord Was what hard?

3:03 PM
Giving the above quote.

Bob
@DragonLord What about it?
5 mins ago, by Bob
Also, the better course of action would have been to just refuse to answer the question or direct them to someone else.

What, that's not enough context?
Would saying this have caused the company harm?
1 min ago, by DragonLord
> From our market analysis, the economics of the Australian market allows us to charge higher prices.

Bob
@DragonLord Perhaps yes, perhaps no. But that's not the point.
Basically, his completely unsubtle attempts at changing the topic (and blatant promotion to go with it, yay!) is considered a joke here.
That's about it.

I'm just wondering if there existed any viable alternative other than just pushing Creative Cloud.

Bob
1 min ago, by Bob
5 mins ago, by Bob
Also, the better course of action would have been to just refuse to answer the question or direct them to someone else.
Actually, I can't quite remember now but I don't think that particular one was an on-the-spot answer.
I recall there was a government inquiry into it at some point.
But, basically: as a prepared response, that sucks. As an on-the-spot response, that sucks.

3:07 PM
I'd rather not assign blame on the CEO unless there was an actual business-appropriate alternative.
They do have a duty to shareholders to make as much money as they can, after all.
Not that this morally justifies these actions, but there has to be a way to answer this question without hurting your business.

Bob
@DragonLord At best he was ill-prepared.
Lookling like a joke is not good for their image either.
IMO, most Australians probably would've appreciated honesty, brutal as it might be.
We don't care much for political correctness around here.
Hm. Flash drive: retractable or swivel?

> Our market analysis has determined that we can generate the most revenue in the Australian market at this price. However, we'll look into this concern and try to adjust pricing accordingly; please stay tuned.
Is telling the truth this hard?
I understand the pressure from shareholders, but just how hard is this?
Or am I missing something?

You are missing the fact that most business men above a certain level are either pathological liars, woefully misinformed by pathological liars, or idiots who got where they are by accident. See the Peter Principle
Oh this phone is just so awesomely fast. At everything. It's actually quite refreshing.

Bob
3:23 PM
@Mokubai Which phone?

S6 edge+
My old phone wasn't a slouch, snapdragon 805 iirc...
But the Exynos 7420 is impressive.

Bob
Ah.
I went from a S4 (Snapdragon 600) to LG G4 (Snapdragon 808).
I don't think I need anything more. Everything I do is buttery smooth.
Might also be because it's not Touchwiz :P

Great, looks like we can self-install cable Internet service.
Cable modem is ready.

Hehe. Touchwiz is a bit of a dog. Might have a look at nova launcher again.

Bob
@Mokubai I've been using Nova Launcher (Prime) this whole time.
Touchwiz feels slow elsewhere though.

3:28 PM
@Mokubai I'd much prefer the simplicity of CyanogenMod and its Trebuchet launcher.

Bob
Apparently they improved it as of the S5/S6.

I got NL Prime around here somewhere

The problem is that unlocking the bootloader on a modern Samsung flagship isn't the easiest to do.
That's why I always go with a Nexus device.

@DragonLord Never had a reason to try it, any benefits? There probably no reason they couldn't just release the launcher...

@Mokubai It's closely tied to CyanogenMod's theme system. I don't think this would be possible. CM also has its own set of API extensions which it probably needs to work properly.

3:31 PM
Got an N7 2013, but for my money stock android sucks. I'm not a fan of bundled crapware but the nexus lines tend to lack bells and whistles.

Bob
@DragonLord I've considered it before, and I like the openness of an unlocked bootloader, but I just don't think I can use a phone without a MicroSD card.

4:08 PM
Cable service activated.
Not best (ping is rather high) but it's working and a huge improvement over DSL.
High ping could be because my CPU is throttled (I'm on battery).
Trying again with ThrottleStop activated...

are you the guy who runs cables

I can get an IPv6 address directly from the modem but my router doesn't support IPv6 :(

4:32 PM
should I use ipv6
oh wait its already enabled !

5:05 PM
...and guess what: I do have IPv6 after all.
This is through the router.
Google's just giving me my IPv4 address.
Verizon just isn't deploying IPv6 from what I can tell.
Time Warner Cable, on the other hand, was among the first to deploy IPv6 with a fully-functional setup.
...and I have no trouble reaching ipv6.fierydragonlord.com.

@allq: Finally got that much-needed Internet upgrade.
It's not the fastest service, but it definitely much faster than that crappy DSL...

You upgraded from internet on a CD to Internet on a DVD ?

lol
We don't see a pressing need for anything faster at the moment, but 3.6 Mbps is a huge improvement over 700 Kbps.
It also costs a mere $15 a month.

Q: Is ISP email more secure than free email services such as Yahoo Mail?

DragonLordWe just changed ISPs and are getting ready to migrate email from the old ISP's service to another email provider. My parents assert, however, that the ISP's email is intrinsically more secure because the ISP has an obligation to protect its paying customers and therefore provide stronger safeguar...

I'm caught in a dispute here.

It really depends on the ISP.

@DragonLord I think that is an impossible question to answer. It's almost impossible to prove that something is secure. Even if you think you have proved it someone may find an exploit in the future.
On the other hand, if you can find even one hole, you have proved it is insecure.

wtf... my Enter key stopped working
I'm fairly certain that it isn't a hardware issue
NumPad Enter still works though :P

Look at how many major companies thought they were secure and suddenly user data is all over the net.
Your parents are just as likely to get phished regardless of where the email is stored.
You also have to consider the "add-ons" when you choose an email provider. For example, how good is their spam filtering.
Have you thought about setting up your own email server? That way you are in total control...

6:19 PM
Correction, it is a hardware issue :P
I guess I didn't get all of that tea out earlier...

Jordan JamingsonsI need to disable the sound that gets emitted on Windows 7 when a user logs off. Well, the post was made from a non-English speaking country. So either he's using a proxy or English isn't the user's primary language
So he might have chosen the terms "abuse" and "hostile" poorly
Also, if they're so tech savvy that they want to set up video surveillance in their home, you might think they'd be able to contact authorities

He said "Unfortunately there is not much law enforcement can do for me in the area I live"

Tough call

I don't think there any more advice to give other than what I already said in my comment, but it's good to have a second pair of eyes on it. Thanks.

Same as with underage users, I'd say report to the employee team
Yeah, I guess your comments are very appropriate
I brought it up in the network mod room. Better get a couple more eyes on it
Thanks for bringing it to our attention

@OliverSalzburg You're welcome.

Send an email to the team anyway maybe. Not getting any responses so far

I don't know how to store some old backups
If I zip it and encrypt it, then the 4GB archive has to be downloaded every time something wants to be accessed from it
But if I leave it as is, then it's not secure at all
Where's the compromise??
Wait a minute...
I don't have to archive them separately
Just leave them on the server and then do the bare metal backup

Wow, blast from the past....
My sister dug up on old 'phone' of me (used to TomTom only
A 'Q-tec pocket PC'
