12:00 AM
(5e doesn't need nearly as much attention to charop as 3.5e, or at least, that's what I have been able to tell)
@SolidusVerum and yes, do you have a char concept in mind, or even knowledge of what the rest of your party is playing?

I'm thinking of playing a magical fighter:

Fighter/Warlock
Bladelock
EK
some sort of mix of that.
It could be Fighter/sorc
or fighter/wizard
or fighter/cleric
The group is meeting next Sunday to make a party and for certain reasons I need to make mine early or at least have most of it down.

@SolidusVerum what fighting style, and it sounds like the arcane/divine split isn't a big deal for you?

@SolidusVerum First thoughts: You need 12 levels of Bladelock to get the most important benefit, which means you might not get all that much from more than 1 Fighter level.
@SolidusVerum There are strong benefits to adding a fighter level to sorcerer or wizard, not so much to cleric.

probably dueling, mariner, or defense

@Miniman yeah, divine casters are as a rule gishier than their arcane counterparts

12:12 AM
I was thinking of going down the BM or EK path for fighter and doing a small dip into warlock

@SolidusVerum The big question for multiclassing is always: What are you looking to get out of your Warlock dip?

From what I understand, Fighters don't get much outside of combat and even in combat they're kind of limited in the amount of interesting things that they can do.

@SolidusVerum True enough.

I figured the warlock would add some utility in and out of combat.
We're starting at Level 7 I believe and I think this will go until 20.

@SolidusVerum 5e is much kinder about letting stuff happen just by way of RP though, which actually helps the fighter's cause from what I've seen (at Wax's table, our EK has been pretty much the star of the show so far)

12:17 AM
@SolidusVerum It can, just make sure you know what you're going in for so that you don't regret slowing your Fighter levels down later.
And always multiclass in multiples of 4 if you can.

@SolidusVerum also, utility doesn't necessarily mean casting or skill checks -- in the case of the EK at Wax's table, most of it is his connections, both noble and Zhentarim

I'm conflicted about dipping because of what the fighter loses out on at levels 16-20.

@SolidusVerum also, what campaign are you going to be playing?

My buddy is making a waterborne adventure.

@SolidusVerum That's why it's important to know exactly what you're dipping for, so you can judge the cost/benefit ratio.

12:23 AM
@Shalvenay I have a feeling that it will draw a lot from One Piece.
@Miniman my thoughts exactly, I'm just not sure how to rate the usefulness of things that might sound good, but end up being a flop.

@SolidusVerum aaah! that's going to be very interesting then. I'd almost be inclined to consider a Druid -- shaping could be very powerful in such a campaign, and Circle of the Moon Druids don't need to dip to get a significant melee capability

@Shalvenay doesn't most of their melee capability come from shaping though?

@SolidusVerum it does. I take it that's...problematic from your perspective?

@Shalvenay as far as mechanics go the Druids (from what I understand) need to be in animal form to do much damage, and can't really cast spells while in animal form.

@SolidusVerum Yep, there's a synergy issue until they get Beast Spells at later levels.

12:31 AM
@SolidusVerum yeah, the 5e druid doesn't get the ability to cast in shifted form until near-endgame (unlike 3.5e, which practically drops it in their lap right after they get shaping)

Yeah I think I'm inclined to stick to a more of a gish concept.

@SolidusVerum It might not be what you're looking for, but the Paladin is far and away the best gish by default.

@SolidusVerum yeah, both the Paladin and the Cleric in 5e are quite capable of gishiness. (my 5e cleric isn't a gish -- but that's a char quirk, not a class limitation)

@Miniman correct me if i'm wrong but gish means magical martial character right?

@SolidusVerum yes -- but divine casters are not exempt from it, AIUI

12:35 AM
@SolidusVerum Yep. It's technically more about characters who use specifically arcane magic and fight in melee, but it can be used for any fighter/spellcaster type.
33
Q: What is the etymology of the term 'Gish'?

Zachary YatesI understand that it roughly means a fighter/mage, as per this question: How to optimize a Gishy [Fighter/Mage] Character? But I just wanted to know more about how the term came about. It's so hard to keep up with the kids these days, learning the lingo helps. Is it related to Githzerai in DnD...

@SolidusVerum another intriguing concept to explore (although I have to eat dinner over here) would be a Ranger adapted to an aquatic campaign

Given the DM's desire for this campaign my character concept:

Based loosely upon - Malcom Reynolds from Firefly and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece

I like the idea of being able to fight, take damage and dish it out. However the fighter needs a little love in order to make a decent ships captain IMO.
@Shalvenay I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I too have to eat dinner.

@SolidusVerum If you're looking to be a leader-type character, I'd definitely recommend Paladin. Another possibility you might not have considered is Bard.
Bards are full spellcasters, and Valour Bards get a hefty chunk of fighting abilities.

@SolidusVerum the Ranger is also a divine-gish in 5e (Ranger : Druid :: Paladin : Cleric), but the abilities and perhaps parts of the spell list would need adaptation to function properly in a seaborne campaign
@Miniman and yeah, bards are of course another option

Personally, I think there's too much wrong with the Ranger to consider recommending it, but that's just me.

12:47 AM
Man if I could channel Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty while talking I'd have so many comments to make here.
But alas.

I love Gish Psions
They're so much fun
You can get all nine of your levels and still get a lot of attack bonuses at the same time to be a very effective combatant in melee or range
Psionic Lion's Charge is one of the best powers lemme tell ya
You can shred some guys

@Miniman and I, personally, as a rule, don't play Bards -- it is a character archetype I personally am uncomfortable with

Neither do I
I'd rather play a rogue than a bard

@Sandwich I don't play rogues much either, but I do prefer them over bards

@Shalvenay Any particular reason?

12:58 AM
And as far as D&D in particular is concerned, boy what about that Critical Existence Failure

@Sandwich 12 Int egoist?

nose crinkle A Psion with only 12 int?

At least in 3.5, you only use Intelligence for power levels you can learn (12 at 1st level meets the minimum for a while) and bonus PP (you have plenty base!), and powers with save DCs (if you use those, which as a self-buffer you won't).

You miss out on a ton of Bonus PP though, and you can't get 9th level powers =\

Up it to 13 at level 4, so you can learn 3rd-level powers at psion 5, and then rely on headbands of Intelligence for further increases. Put your high abilities into troubleshooting statistics.

1:04 AM
Oh that's weak you could be doing the exact opposite

Could be, but why?

Most GM's Play it like this:
"Your allotted spells per day (including bonus spells) is all based of your core (un-enhanced) key stat. Enhancement bonuses don't give bonus spells slots, but do increase the DC to overcome the spell."
Temporary ability bonuses don't normally grant bonus spells, or skill points in other words
Pretty sure Owl's Wisdom (the spell) says something similar about bonus spells not being granted when the score comes from a temporary bonus
I think its different in Pathfinder though
There are items that specifically mention that the wearer get retroactive skill points or spell slots after wearing the item a certain amount of time
I think its 24 hours

The headband simply changes your Intelligence score. The only exceptional bit about that mentioned in its description is skill points.
That said, I do think Pathfinder's approach to preventing shared item benefits is a sensible one.

3:35 AM
Damn it
I got TVTropes'd

Its when you go to TVTropes to look up a trope (In my instance it was Critical Existence failure) and end up spending more than an hour looking through the site when you had other things to do

4:17 AM
It is a hazard to us all.

I'm up to three hours now sobs
I just cant stop clicking tropes

@Sandwich Which broswer do you use?

Firefox

Ah, then your problems will be gone soon.
Once you have enough tabs open it'll crash, freeing you from your prison of tropes.

What if he isn't opening tabs?

4:23 AM
My firefox never crashes

@Sandwich May I recommend an alt+f4 followed by stepping away to clear your head?

@doppelgreener I don't know any other way to browse TVTropes.

I use an incredibly stable non-updated version
The only thing that can stop TVTropes is a need to eat or use the bathroom
DAMN YOU CASTLE OF THE WINDS
YOU DID THIS

@Sandwich also, alt+f4 and walking away to clear your head.

I cant do that because I'm not finished reading

4:25 AM
Well, then it's on you, not TVTropes.

No TVTropes is too addicting
I finally managed to close it out on the "Wrench Wench" page
How I got there from Critical Existence failure I'll never know

2 hours later…
6:29 AM
Morning

Morning :)

MAGICIAN
XD

Yes, fine, I'm here. Thank you. Yes. All mornings be mine.

[activates the wizard hat signal]
Aha, he walks in before I've even activated it. As expected from a magician.

This has turned out to be much harder than expected.

6:42 AM
Well... Following your logic, it was meant to be :P

lol

Well, one cannot say a wizard never makes bad decisions.
He's just not late or early with them.

Wizards are bad decisions waiting to happen. At the right time.

yes, this is why owlbears exist

I love this comic.

6:55 AM
"Wizards: no sense of right and wrong." is a timeless phrase.

That it is.
No sense of right and wrong sounds like an awesome progressive metal song.

@Pixie He looks like he has a fake nose on a string in the last panel.

"Wait a minute. These illithids are horribly inefficient and have way too many unnecessary parts for brain devouring. I'll just make a brain devourer to see how much more efficient it can get. Just one. I'm sure nothing will go wrong."

@doppelgreener "Why would you even do that?" "[casual shrug] Someone had to do it." "No they didn't."
@Magician ... he does. xD

Ooooer.
One of my answers is inching towards a Reversal badge.

7:00 AM
@Magician I thought that too
@Pixie apparently because he does,... XD

I recall reading that in Charles Darwin's day, to be respected, you had to be an expert on something. Most things already had experts, so Darwin chose barnacles. A lot of bad stuff happened along the way, and at the end of it, IIRC he has been quoted saying he never wanted to see another barnacle again.
Alas I the googles do not provide me with such a quote.
Anyway, someone couldn't find anything to be an expert on other than illithids.
And progress must be made.

@trogdor No, I meant it looks like he does. I don't think he's supposed to.

@doppelgreener It's a promising research topic. You could write multiple papers on their reproductive cycle alone.

@doppelgreener as in you had to be an expert on something no one else was expert at?
@Pixie oh

@doppelgreener I don't need to point out that illithids made intellect devourers, do I?

7:03 AM
@trogdor Yes.

XD

Or the best expert, at least.
@Miniman Who says? The illithids? Can you trust them? Can you really trust anyone who believes what illithids say?

@doppelgreener That, or "I just think they're neat."

@doppelgreener So a barnacle expert would look at young up-and-coming barnacle enthusiasts and just think "...seriously?"

@doppelgreener I bow before your superior paranoia.

7:04 AM
Maybe they're lying sacks of [bleep] who are kinda embarrassed a non-illithid beat them to it.
@Miniman Paranoia is our greatest weapon against the illithids! Also our worst! But we'll take what we can get!

@doppelgreener Paranoia is the muddy footprints left in your mind after it's been tampered with.

7:17 AM
@Miniman I wouldn't trust anyone who was trying to take credit for intellect devourers, either.

What came first, the wizard or the intellect devourer?

the answer is AAWIODWPJAJFDSAFS:

7:37 AM
@BESW What about the lab assistant who claimed to have fled from someone who was developing intellect devourers and then got devoured by one?

An Amnesiac Wizard Invented Owlbears and Devourers Without Predicting the Jealous Attacks of Jadine, his Fellow Dabbler in the Sorcerous Arts, and her Ferocious Squirrel?

Instant campaign: it's not "a wizard did it." It's "THE wizard did it." And the wizard has a plan.
@BESW I think trogdor tried to give out a secret his intellect devourer didn't wish to share just yet.

not quite, unless I have a second issue
not saying it isn't possible so much as I have a different possible esxplanation

That's just what an intellect devourer would say!

I won't argue with that
that argument lasts forever

7:56 AM
Hmmmmmmm.... I am curious how Alex Mitan's games have been, but they haven't been in chat recently.

@BESW As a wizard is obviously definitionally wacky, perhaps just a judge fathoming delirium should answer for sure.

I will soundly conclude they've gone very well, and Alex has been abducted to Narnia to provide counsel on important matters.

I think in at least one of the editions of D&D, intellect devourers couldn't stay too long in one body. Essentially dead, the body would start to decay, forcing them to seek out a new host. What if some can't find one. For whatever reason, they stay on, being slowly poisoned by the decaying flesh around them. They start to forget. They are in pain. If only they could find a new host. A new body. New brains to eat. Braaaaaains.

@doppelgreener An intriguing theory! But yes I hope they are going wonderfully.

@doppelgreener I will say however, that is just the accusation a person with their intellect devoured would make
mike drop

7:59 AM
Whenever Internet People vanish without explanation, I imagine all the amazingly awesome things they're doing to keep them away from the computer.

Or maybe it's an ethical intellect devourer that lives in the human society by using dead bodies.

@trogdor Mike drop.

hey, you know that is the wrong Mike

Finally, an undead intellect devourer that turns its victims into zombies when it leaves.

@Magician It's just borrowing things you weren't using anymore.
@trogdor But also the best Mike!

8:05 AM
@Pixie Next supernatural romance craze for sure. Vampires, werewolves, even zombies, all been done. To death.

@Pixie you may be correct
I struggle to find a better one
maybe it isn't a popular enough name, for starters

"Devoured", I'll call the franchise.

@Magician PERFECT.
I am suddenly reminded of Wandering Monsters High School.

...dammit, now I actually want to write it. Just a page.

lol

Pah. The only terrifying squid are is terrifyingly adorable.

no
they are horrid
you have not seen space squid

If by horrid you mean the cutest.
@trogdor I have not seen this thing!

this is not the thing

@Pixie Cuttlefish? More like cuddlefish.

8:38 AM
@Magician Indubitably.
I have just discovered that there is an RPG called I'm a Pretty Princess and wow it looks fun.

8:59 AM
^ I am with Pixie. Adorable and plushy.

9:19 AM
@Pixie "FGM." Cute.

space squid are not like any of these cute things
at least not the ones I have seen

@BESW Is that meant to be a tyranid space squid? The other ships definitely belong to the Imperium.

I would not be surprised.
It's from a massive collection of unlabelled images I got a couple years ago from a friend as he left island, and there's a ton of WH in there.
(I've been going through it for ideas about my post-Nibiru inspiration map, and finally culling the stuff I don't want. There's nothing quite like an un-curated dump of every image on someone's computer to tell you more than you ever wanted to know about them.)

9:40 AM
@BESW I somehow read the whole thing without spotting that.

@BESW I know exactly who you mean XD isn't hard to figure that one out
also, you should have guessed that was not the entirely best idea
but wtv
I think he was the first person I knew who was really into Warhammer
possibly even the only person I knew personally who was, unless I forget someone

@trogdor It was going to be curated, but then he ran out of time and just went, "Here!"

ah
that makes sense

There is a reason no one has access to my files unsupervised. [padlocks image folder]

I am uninterested in that kind of thing being seen by other people either
or frankly learning that kind of thing
I imagine most people feel that way on at least one of those counts

9:55 AM
Some of this stuff I can't even. Here's an illustration of the WWI European theatre in which Italy appears to be three minks with gun holsters and no hind legs but their tails are stuffed into a boot, and Algeria is a squid.
On the other hand, here's the MST3K silhouettes Photoshopped onto a black-and-white picture of Statler and Waldorf. I can get behind that.

10:18 AM
@Pixie I really like the ideas behind the Casting Deck. [scribbles notes]

@BESW Yeah, I did too.
I've encountered a number of systems that use playing cards in interesting ways lately.

...okay, here's another space squid.

@BESW Squid me to the moon and let me swim among the stars...

10:49 AM
Would an octopus be fine too?

11:01 AM
@BESW Governments start figuring out how to leverage Weird Stuff.jpg

@BESW Explain the casting deck to me! Because teaching helps you articulate things and learn and because I'm buzzing around doing chores and cooking so I don't starve before bed. :D
@BESW Nice.

@doppelgreener The Casting Deck is used to prompt making important NPCs. It's the Aces, Jacks, Queens, and Kings from a regular deck.
At the start of the game, to determine the Big Problem that the princesses need to solve, the FGM (Fairy Godmother) lays out three cards from the deck.
The players then collaborate using the cards to define the Important People and their problems.
Aces are girls about the Princesses' age; Jacks are boys; Queens are older women; Kings are older men.
The suit determines the sort of problem the Important Person is facing.
Spades are problems stemming from cruelty or hurtfulness; Hearts are emotional problems; Diamonds are problems about material possessions; Clubs are social problems.
If the FMG feels that the problem needs more Important People, she can lay down more cards.
And as the game progresses, more Important People may be needed.

none of these space squids are right
still, I admit there are a lot of different kinds of space squid

Once you've got your Important People, the FMG lays down three cards from the Obstacles Deck (all the cards from 2 to 10). These tell you about the obstacles that the Princesses have to overcome in order to reach the Important Person: suits indicate the nature of the problem, and the value of the card indicates how hard it is to overcome.
The Important Person is themself an obstacle as well; Jacks and Aces are 11, Kings are 12, and Queens are 13.
And that's the casting deck mechanic, @doppelgreener.

11:34 AM
That sounds pretty nice.

12:05 PM
It seems like an easily managed way to prompt direction. [strokes chin] I wonder if I could work out something similar with tarot cards.
Mainly because the art is so evocative and I don't use my decks for anything. :P It would have to be a bit more complex due to the variety in the major arcana, but the suits would be easier to manage.

12:24 PM
@Pixie or you could convert the game in "I'm a pretty magician girl!"
(forgive quality, first image from google image search)

@SPArchaeologist Don't you mean...

@Pixie While DMG is indeed a character that I like (even have an action figure of her, still missing the DM that was supposed to go with it), sadly that card doesn't have suits or numbers.
Unless you intend to use stars and types :P
But then, I require that you add a special rule too if someone manages to draw all five Exodia pieces as obstacles

Trying to use a TCG in this manner would be hilariously complex if you were trying to include anything but types.
Hmm. I think the best way to use a tarot deck for idea generation in play might be assigning each major arcana card one or two broad characteristics (ex. High Priestess = secrets, knowledge) and making a chart. There's just no intuitive way to group them.

12:40 PM
What does it mean when your tarot deck gets hijacked by a fairy prophecy?

but you know....
the whole People-Problems-Obstacles...
aren't that the types of cards in the MLP TCG too?? If anything, you cold try to use those. Not really evocative though :P

@BESW You're going to have a bad day, probably.

(Image is, of course, from Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.)

Or a very good one. There's not really an in between with fairies.

JS&MN definitely leans toward the former.

12:59 PM
@BESW still pretty good at headbutting people though

....I see what you did there.

Incidentally the diprotodon disappeared around the same time the Australian aborigines began to arrive.
I-I'm not sure what I did there

@doppelgreener Wombat rumps are covered with extremely calloused skin and thick fur. Combined with their super-powerful leg muscles, a fox or other predator that sticks its head into a wombat burrow will get its skull crushed against the side of the tunnel by the wombat's butt.
@Pixie Hotlink fail.

Alas.

1:14 PM

@BESW Whoa.
Brutal. Now I see what I did there.

"MetalSucks Readers Name Varg Vikernes The Biggest Putz in Metal!" Also the biggest putz in RPGs
"We could not think of an untalented, homicidal bigot more deserving of this dishonor. Congrats, Varg!"

1:57 PM
Vitriol might not be totally appropriate here.

The vitriol is understandable (warning for language and bigotry), but let's just leave it alone. Our attention won't make it any better, and will just make this space less fun.

So here's a random thought. Proxy bluff/insight checks. If NPC 1 lies and convinces NPC 2 of something and then NPC 2 tells it to a player, would the player get an insight check? NPC 2 is sure the story is true, so he isn't actively lying.

polkovnikov.phHere's what it looks like: Fix: remove that useless one-cell <table> from markup and set width: 100%; box-sizing: border-box; to your <input>. Thanks.

Papyrus is another font people love to hate. Partly because it's also overused in poor contexts, but also because it's not designed to look good when made really big.

@Miniman -- I think it has to do with the "shady underworld guy" Rogue archetypes, mostly

Is there a common name for someone who's had their titles revoked? Like a sir that is no longer a sir.

I dont think there is a word for someone no longer in a royal order...

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Depends on the context.

@BESW Revoked because the sirs didn't act very knightly and their title has been revoked and they've been thrown in prison.

Prisoner

10:31 PM
So, they've been revoked rather than just derogated?

Derogation might be all I need.
No need to actually take the title. As long as it's known far and wide what they did they're free to call themselves sirs I guess.

See also forfeiture.
Other words your (presumably fictional) kingdom might use include reprobation, reprimand, and censure.
'cause, yanno, every kingdom handles this sort of thing differently.

True
I'll figure something out, just needed some inspiration.

There are a lot of badly-formatted digital “rips” of the 2nd edition books that have broken table layouts. The costs in the real book's tables are clearly labelled, so I can only imagine that one of these pirate sites or PDFs is the cause of this problem, which would make this question off-topic. Note that the real book is available cheaply, either second-hand from various resellers, or direct from the publisher in an official PDF conversion. — SevenSidedDie ♦ 6 hours ago
I dispute this highly!
I mean... I have no idea what he is talking about

11:33 PM
@Shalvenay How does that mean you don't want to play Bards?

@Miniman I was addressing Rogues -- Bards I think are a matter of my tastes in entertainment (I'm a percussionist at heart)

11:50 PM
@Shalvenay So, you don't like Bards because you don't like music?

Wat.

@Miniman no, because my musical preferences don't mesh well with what's available in most 'verses

@Shalvenay ...what? Percussion is the most basic form of music. I don't think anyone's ever suggested a world that has music and doesn't have percussion.

Bards can totally be percussionists.

@Miniman I think the other factor is my diversity in music tastes

11:58 PM
@Shalvenay This isn't making sense to me.

it's not that I couldn't play the archetype, it's that it'd wind up rather...confusing to say the least, compared to the typical vision

@Shalvenay Because?
