Now FF decided to render the shadows of stones, but not the stones themselves. No idea what it is thinking.
Looks funny:

12:11 PM
@CodeInChaos what do you see at jsfiddle.net/qNA4n/1?
also, I need a clever name for the open source version of the renderer -- good ideas, anybody?
@CodeInChaos I guess your browser has some sort of issue with gradients. I've made a change that should work around issues like that -- does it look usable now?

12:56 PM
1) That JS fiddle looks identical in opera and FF to me. A gradient box with shadow.
2) Now it works in FF, stones a flat shaded though

there are a few threads on the firefox bugzilla about issues with FF and direct2d
(regarding gradients)
I guess that's what happens for you

@balpha Something else, there was a remark that a question feed could be turned on for this chat so we're notified. Do you know whom to talk to about this?

yourself :)

mafutrct has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

@balpha Cool, thanks. I added the feed to post messages, hope I did it right :)

Yep, looks good. The first five should come in shortly
("first time" is limited to five)

Q: List of Go programs

Sean TilsonWhat are some programs that can be used to play Go offline? I am aware of GnuGo, but are there good programs for Windows 7? This is a Big list type question. One program per an answer. Please list the operating system as well as a download link, if it is legal/open source. Feel free to list thi...

Q: What is the practical difference between Mini Chinese and Mini Mini Chinese?

mafutrctThe Mini Mini Chinese fuseki is similar to the regular Mini Chinese except the extension is slightly closer to the corner. Both the regular and the more tight version are common in recent pro games. $$c $$ --------------------------------------- $$ | . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | $$ ...

Q: Are professional ranks representative for how many stones of handicap players can give eachother?

ufotdsIt was uttered elsewhere that a 9p could not give 7 stones to a 2p. I have not databases available and wondered if this is correct. bonus: if they aren't representative, why not and is there a historical reason for it developing that way?

Q: What is the formula of rank difference to handicap stones?

JoshuaThe intended formula is for 1 stone difference in rank, weaker player takes black with reverse komi of 0.5. From then on, add one handicap stone per stone difference (black goes first without komi is equivalent to one handicap stone if free placement is used). However, this formula doesn't work ...

Q: Any good android app with go problems collection?

PanJanekI'm looking for android app with problems for 10k-1k. I found this one: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bdapp.badukmosueng&hl=pl which is very nice, but I'd like more problems.

That's good... or it would be one heck of a flood when you first enable the feed :)

@jkerian As long as we're in private beta it should be fine... once it's open, probably not :)

5:20 PM
@mafutrct Depends on the traffic level
If it gets bad, the first step is to switch it to the other form of feed

Yes
Not sure who proposed the idea yesterday, but it was only meant for a short time

me, I think ^^

hah ;D

It took us a week or so to figure out what we wanted over on japanese.SE

You mean like for the feed? Or the site content?

5:25 PM
for the feed... we're still working on the content
It's admitedly a bit trickier on japanese.SE though... since we didn't want to be focused on "learning methods" and also didn't want to be "please translate this"

Yeah I can imagine
I'm actually surprised English.SE seems to be doing well

The problem, of course, is that it led to endless discussions of what was "on topic"
I was guilty of quite a bit of that

I'm not completely convinced how certain topics, especially languages, and also Go, fit to the format of SE
Ah

Go is a bit tricky, since the usefulness of the sites voting mechanism is directly related to the kyu-rank of the average member
Rather regularly, the "right move" from the perspective of a low-kyu is obviously wrong to a medium-dan

That's true.
Also, I think we need to change the general approach to Go issues when using this site

5:30 PM
how so?
The only thing I've seen really wrong with the go site so far is a few survey questions have crept in

Usually, I'd work on any Go question in a propose-refute-accept style, i.e. a discussion until I'm convinced of something
That's not at all possible on Go.SE from how I see it

Rule of thumb: If it can't actually have an answer, it's not a good question.

Yes.
But Go in itself is a huge question
Noone can be certain... so how can you be sure of anything you post?
It's required to explain everything very well to get your idea across

Well... in some cases you can post with as much confidence as you can a programming answer on SO
(mostly thinking life-and-death-type questions)

Hm, probably. I was afraid of fuseki questions (Can I play this move?) but that would either be off topic - or be asked in a useful way (What are benefits and drawbacks of playing this and that?)
Well, somewhat useful.
This leads to another topic I'm afraid of: How should we title the questions?
"Question about a move in a game, #3453" doesnt seem that useful to me
Maybe if we had little diagrams next to the questions °_°

5:36 PM
You just like giving balpha more to do ^^
I was thinking along the same lines, though... could you do an alternate front page with diagrams instead of titles? Could that be made to work?
would be something that could be prototyped off-site, just to try it out

It might certainly be helpful o.o in the long run

Are we under the same restriction as the main site, no title duplicates?

I'm just posting a meta Q
It's up.
Regarding the restriction, I had no idea it existed o.o

Q: Diagrams next to question captions

mafutrctIn the long run, there will be a lot of questions in the form of "Question about some move in some game". To make sure users have a basic understanding of the actual content of the question, I'd suggest to add little diagrams next to the questions. To a Go player, those diagrams will usually imm...

I vaguely recall it coming up in a recent podcast
(for perhaps generous definitions of the word "recent")

5:43 PM
How's the site coming along?

I didn't have a chance to watch any recent podcasts so no idea :)
@Mana Well I'd say it's growing :) And has some cool features already

@mafutrct Awesome! Glad to hear it. I had planned on pitching in some questions but then Skyrim hit Gaming and well...:(

Have to go, already close to 7pm
@Mana Haha, yeah, I see. My friends are busy playing it too
Well wait, are you saying you're busy answering questions about it?
Anyway, ttyl

@mafutrct BTW, should probably add the meta feed as well

5:50 PM
@balpha thanks!

Q: what is the quickest way to convert an sgf into audouard coordinates?

magnetarFor a long time, I have been interested in getting fluent in Audouard Coordinates. For an even longer time, probably since I read Nie Weiping's first go book, where he mentions sitting underneath a tree imagining entire games of go, I wanted to be able to imagine the game in my head. As people m...

Q: Are there different types of korigatachi?

magnetarOne of my favorite chapters of the book Strategic Concepts of Go is the chapter on korigatachi. I have often wondered if anyone had bothered to 'classify' different types of korigatachi -- for instance, such and such is a this type of korigatachi, such and such were that type. I am not really tal...

@mafutrct No, clearing flags is the main thing I'm doing haha
The Skyrim launch brought a huge amount of activity to the site, and, well...with large amounts of activity comes large amounts of ineptitude, apparently.

I believe that

An analogous situation would be if "Hikaru no Go" were to hit the fansubbing scene two weeks from now, as opposed to a few years back
