Morning
user92578
I've got 4 school day's work to do today :(
user92578
So I'll get the hell outta here and start working
Have fun!

1 hour later…
09:07
I think I'm buying website hosting D:
Anyone have any experience with transip? transip.eu / transip.nl (CC @Lokkij cause you're (IIRC) dutch)
09:22
Heya fellas
anyone experienced with implementing OpenGL ES 2 context on desktop ?
@ManmohanBishnoi why would you need the limited context on a desktop?
For simulating stuff or?
I develop android games and sometimes doing things with Physics engine (BulletPhysics) are difficult
It would be a lot easier to build a sandbox for testing on desktop that renders using openGL ES 2 and directly port finished code to android
I've never done it, g-truc.net/post-0457.html has something about that, should be possible via GLFW
09:26
there's an extension bit passed while creating OpenGL context
GLX_CONTEXT_ES2_PROFILE_BIT_EXT
but seems like there isnot much information on how to use it
0
Q: How to create OpenGL ES 2 context on Desktop?

Manmohan BishnoiIs it possible to create OpenGL ES 2 context on desktop linux? My context related code is like this: int context_attribs[] = { GLX_CONTEXT_MAJOR_VERSION_ARB, 4, GLX_CONTEXT_MINOR_VERSION_ARB, 5, GLX_CONTEXT_PROFILE_MASK_ARB, GLX_CONTEXT_ES2_PROFILE_BIT_EXT, ...

@KevinvanderVelden I was thinking of a workaround
since desktop OpenGL ES implementation will differ from the Android implementation due to different driver and hardware
I'm having trouble solving Sherlock and the beast even though its marked as easy :(
@ManmohanBishnoi yeah I have no idea
create a Server(Desktop)-Client(Android App) program .. .and each use platforms native OpenGL implementations
@ManmohanBishnoi that can't be solved ever. However the profile does restrict you to the same functions so barring bugs in drivers etc
and send commands from server like
"SET BODY_X MASS=100Kg"
and android client App updates the body mass
this way I'll be sure that my code does not break when porting to android
@KevinvanderVelden by the way hostin plan on
seems good to me
I use GoDaddy and AWS for hosting my servers
09:34
Yes, but they can write whatever they want on websites they control. Hence me asking for anyone with actual experience with it
I've heard nothing but bad things about godaddy
I do use GoDaddy for my websites and custom email
I mean, sure the hosting is decent
But everything around that is bad
my experience is good in last 6 years . . .. bad things . .like what ?
09:39
Like, entering a dns on their website to see if it's available, and them immediately parking the website for, essentially, ransom
Also they supported SOPA which should be enough for anyone
Also regarding transip: They are trying really hard to make it seem cheap, and then adding everything they possibly can
For example: In the netherlands the listed price is expected to include taxes, otherwise there's a note saying that they aren't included. Except of course on transip for some reason...
Also a 2 euro discount! For only the first month so that's nothing to write home about
hm m. . .taxes . .. they surely add a lot to the final bill
Meh
@ManmohanBishnoi 19%
what !! .. . that's a lot of tax
Yes, but on the other hand we actually maintain our public infrastructure
tax money utilized for public is something not readily seen in India.
Most of the goverment grants for projects is deposited in swiss bank accounts of corrupt politicians
09:47
Yeah
(Also there's different rates for different things, web hosting is, of course, a non essential and thus taxed the highest (well, not counting cigarettes and such))
In fact for registered companies the income tax is 30% . .same tax rate for a start-up or big corporate giant
Well there's income tax as well, this is a tax on things you purchase
I know that. .. .here it is called VAT - value added tax (14%)
that's enough about taxes :)
@KevinvanderVelden so you an Indie or work for some company?
@ManmohanBishnoi Do they really use the english name? =p
I mean, we call it Belasting Toegevoegde Waarde (BTW), which is... uuh, "taxes added value"
No need for a new room you know, this one's fine =p
Also, gamedeving as an indie
I thought we were cluttering this general room with lots of tax related stuff.
so any games you published so far.
09:57
Meh, it's not like anyone else is talking right now =p
@ManmohanBishnoi define published? =p. I've made a few gamejam games public, and a few for school. Never sold one though
I meant published = sold :)
Then the answer is indeed none =p
(Though I did work on one that got sold!)
(As an intern, by which I mean the sole programmer during my time there)
Yay I have a website now
10:01
I mean, it's not actually accessible yet but
which hosting provider did you choose?
mijndomein.nl
Cheapest one I could find that doesn't have a really low bandwith limit (this has a fair use policy of 10 times the average use), while having good reviews
10:17
Oh seriously?
The js13k zip extraction thing doesn't work with my valid zip file -,-
10:33
Now it's crashing while creating the directory :D
@KevinvanderVelden Nope, I'm using Yourhosting
user92578
11:12
fucking religion assignments
s/assignments//
user92578
I gotta write a page on musics role in christianity between the 1600s and the 1900s
user92578
and I already summarized three chapters on random stuff
user92578
I just want to dev already
user92578
Well, I guess I'll just start making shit up
user92578
11:17
@KevinvanderVelden i dont get this
@Tyyppi_77 Well, it is a religious class
user92578
haha true
@Tyyppi_77 s/*regex to search for*/*value to replace with*/
user92578
ah
user92578
my regex is a little rusty xD
user92578
11:18
last time I used it was like 4 or 5 years ago when I tried to add syntax highlighting to my custom python "IDE" :D
Well, there's not actually a regex in there except in the most technical sense
user92578
I had to do a math assignment earlier and it was really nice exercise, it really showed me how useful derivatives are
user92578
I had to get the equation for the tangent of y=x^2 at the position (1, 1)
user92578
So simple with derivatives
user92578
But I wasn't allowed to use them
user92578
11:24
So it was "a lot" more work, with one discriminant and then solving a 2d order equation
user92578
Really cool stuff
12:00
Welp. js13k is a bust, their software is crappy and doesn't support zip files
user92578
12:35
So looks like I gotta get a new headset, any recommendations?
I like my G430, nice and lightweight and with USB soundcard thingy
user92578
Ah
user92578
What does the USB thing do?
Be a soundcard
That way you can just plug the USB thing in and have sound and mic go over your headset
No configuring anything
user92578
Ah, okay, sounds cool
user92578
12:37
They also look cool
user92578
And price seems reasonable
I don't know how much it is, I won it :D
user92578
There's volume control on the wire?
Yes, and mic mute
user92578
89,90e in a popular Finnish webstore
user92578
12:38
Okay, so the same controls as my current one...
user92578
I could also get the G230 for 69,90e
user92578
It only has stereo
So does the G430, given that, you know. It has a single stereo plug
I have no idea why it's marketed as more
user92578
Yeah but there are more sound sources right?
user92578
12:43
I think the G230 might be good enough for me
user92578
Red is also a cooler color, as my lame USB speakers have a red outline
user92578
Hmm yeah those seem good
user92578
Thanks a lot
user92578
Meanwhile
user92578
I got boxes working in the level editor
13:50
Somebody stabbed my wheel while at the grocery store. Why do people have to be such dicks?
user92578
:(
wtf
@Hjorthenify hey you might find this interesting: harmful.cat-v.org/people/basic-laws-of-human-stupidity
a semi-mathematical model of stupidity
user92578
Oh hey
user92578
Now that there are other people here too, I'd like to get a second (and a third if possible) opinion on what headset to get
ok
you have some you were looking at?
user92578
13:58
Yeah Kevin recommended the Logitech G430
user92578
But the cheaper G230 seemed like a valid option too, maybe even a bit preferred, for the cheaper price
user92578
As I don't do hardcore gaming, a few extra sound sources probably aren't something I would be interested in investing in
I don't think hardcore gaming ever requires super-awesome sound repro, unless you're really into the audio aspect of the games
I use a $300 set of headphones on my computer partially because I listen to music when I'm working
and I love music
but a side effect is I get great audio repro on LoL, which is amazing sound design
but if you're looking for a headset for general use, investing heavily doesn't seem necessary
I think I'd be more interested in whether the thing is built to last
user92578
14:20
Working on adding enemies:
user92578
user92578
They add correctly, but the rendering flickers for some reason
user92578
It was an odd layer error I think
user92578
Ookay, that's working now
user92578
Now one thing I probably should add to the editor is previewing
user92578
14:30
So currently it doesn't show anything unless you actually make the edit
user92578
14:48
Not sure if I should do this:
user92578
user92578
where the enemy gets added to the "center"
user92578
or just offset it to the tile
user92578
Totally the latter:
user92578
user92578
15:03
Previewing kinda works, but there's a problem with the gun hitboxes:
user92578
user92578
15:18
I think I need to either somehow manually clear those
user92578
Or let the enemies know they're in editor mode
user92578
Or
user92578
Wait I might be able to not invike the KillEntity() function
user92578
Just destroy entities and not spawning particles etc
user92578
Yeah that stops the particles and the shaking
user92578
15:27
However it does not help with the guns
user92578
Anyways Ill call it a day
Pip
Pip
15:51
cya later then Tyyppi
16:05
@Tyyppi_77 just thought i'd point out that your almost daily updates and progress reports are whats keeping me moving forward with my own stuff. It's fun to see what other people are doing as their personal projects
16:26
adding spritefonts to monogame is a pain in the butt
16:43
I agree, the daily updates are great
has anyone here used monogame without installing the rest of the XNA stuff?
16:56
The only XNA stuff I did was before monogame was released
monogame is currently beating me and winning
its had its own content pipeline thing added, and its supposed to let you generate xnb's from spritefonts. It kinda works, but also doesn't
Morning guys! :D
its made the xnb, it now just wont load the xnb.
Jon
Jon
@RhysW wuts the err?
It's giving me null reference exceptions
but I can see its created the xnb
Jon
Jon
17:09
can you post the code you use to load the xnb?
also, where did you put the xnb file?
Sure
font = this.Content.Load<SpriteFont>("MyFont");

The font is called MyFont. I added it through the mgcb pipeline UI
when it builds it puts it in the 'Content\bin\Windows' file, which I presume is the correct place as that part is automated
i dont have any of the XNA framework installed, as monogame 3.4 claims it no longer needs it
@Jon ah got it, its my own inability to read that is the issue
Jon
Jon
:P
it was embarassingly obvious, but uh, we will gloss over that :P thanks
ok now we are getting somewhere! woo
all documentation i can find online at the moment is a total mess while people have had to write pure XNa, then XNA Monogame mixes, then just monogame ones as both things evolved.
@Lokkij pretty embarassing
@Almo but photosynthesis!
heh
how goes your eve stuff almo?
17:54
pretty well
in defense of providence we're getting a lot of kills
nice, youve been playing that for years now havent you?
@RhysW Dont.. Talk.. About EVE! It drags.. me.. CLOSER
:P almo got me into it at one point with his blog, but I escaped somehow
EVE
i haven't blogged in a long long time
i know :(
you did the rocket league piece semi recently
but nothing since nov 2013 for eve i dont think
18:02
I just got 3 USB 3.0 16GB sticks for free
yeah it's been a while
But my PC doesn't do USB 3.0 :(
#FirstWorldProblems
i think mine only has usb3 ports
Showoff.
:D
:P
18:06
My laptop is 5 years old
6 this summer
ah, i replace mine at that sort of age, which is what i did last year i think
Yeah
I'll get a new PC soonish
But a stationary instead of a laptop
:O
i've never not had a laptop
I'll use my current one for school stuff :P
Lovers is a Dangerous Spacetime looks awesome
The LOVE-powered reactor broke and there is anti-love spreading through the galaxy! Guided by space-bunny professor Hopsy Flopsy, you rescue space-bunnies who can RAINBOW-BEAM gateways open to parts of the LOVE-reactor! :D
user92578
18:20
@RhysW Thanks a lot, that really means a lot to me. Sharing my progress and the undescribably valuable feedback I get are really what keep me going.
@Tyyppi_77 IHANA feedback!
user92578
Weird sentence, plz dont mind it
user92578
Lol
Okay I'll stop using the only finish word i know whenever I can...
user92578
Nono not you
18:21
I know :P
well that went well :P
user92578
On mobile, so whats written is written :D
what kind of game are you making? and don't say 2d platformer, that much is evident :P
2d top-down
user92578
Action-shooter-platformer is the term I think I use
18:25
.
@Asaltaviejas I thought we made it clear yesterday that if you wanted to take part of this chat you had to say something constructive.
user92578
Hi
Yeah try with Hi, but ONLY ONCE :P
user92578
:D
19:05
know of ring that summons lunatics fallen
diii
4 of them and I walk toward the boss they explode
instantly
i got one. really fun
19:26
I could farm bosses like that. low level anyway
would be cool if it was weapon damage
Oh yeah, the raspberry pi is kinda slow
19:54
@KevinvanderVelden 1 or 2?
1
(It's powerful enough for what I usually do, but building my website takes 0.09 seconds on my virtual machine on my pc, and 6 seconds on my raspi)
What do you use your PI for?
eating
@Hjorthenify Play music
How does that work?
20:00
HDMI to my amplifier
Well.. How do you control it?
MPD for the player, controller app on my phone
Ah cool
i love accidentally stumbling across a really well written explanation on how to do something
Me too
20:07
it was posted 6 years ago but is still relevant and mostly correct too.
What is it?
Someone explaining how they managed their screen handler
Ah
Well if you link it, then you might get some stars on it :)
I don't imagine it covers anything all of you's don't already know. It's very entry level, so just right for where I am starting :P
:P
I do like reading well explained articles, but I do like to implement stuff from badly written articles as it makes it less of a "just write this without any knowledge of what's going on"
20:14
@RhysW Post it anyway!
Not all of us are as experienced as one might think
its part 1 of 4. And this poster seems to continuously write tutorials / guides of this level of explanation
Yeah it looks really good
Jon
Jon
you kick my dog
Why stop there?
Uhm. I'm trying to install something with npm. It is taking 90% of available memory
Aand the (console!) task monitor crashed, out of memory
Javascript: Where installing a package takes over half a gig of memory
Javascript: Wut es strims?
20:22
Yup, ah well. Time for bed
20:40
That moment when you're going to write Java/Python but you realize you can do it in JavaScript instead
you guys should do like, a monthly event with challenges like this: dreamincode.net/forums/topic/…
@RhysW Lol i would wish I could do those, but school cuts too much of my time ; - ;
Nah we're all friends here. Internal challenges makes people become.. Less friends.
All this week's hw didnt let me finish my js13k entry and I was 90% done ; - ;
I mean, its similar to what writers does with their prompt tuesdays
20:42
I think the wildly varying levels of skill and experience would be an issue
Lol
and then the UE and Unity wars began
@Lokkij I feel like you could say that about any challenge type event
we should have a asset creation contest >:^)
True, but most challenges have the benefit that they can appeal to only a small part of the audience because everyone can participate
@TheMuffinCoder Sure as long as its 2D :P
20:43
yeah, you could have all sorts of variety, doesnt have to be huge monolithic stuff all the time
There's like six people in here who would participate
D: you found my flaw
@Lokkij ok, just an idea
Not saying it's a bad idea, but I don't think it would fit for this room
20:44
lol i'm only decent at making pixel art :P
might only be 6 now could also be used to get people interested
@Lokkij I don't just mean this room, i mean gamedev.se as a whole
@Lokkij Agreed
lol there's only a few of us here usually
The rest are random people with quick questions
well yeah, you aren't going to attract the type of people who would take part if there isn't something for them to take part in :P its a catch-22
We should totally host another GD.SE GameJam though
20:48
yeah, that kinda thing, when was the last one?
Half a year ago I think
Lol then we can have teams :^)
Then half the chat will merge into 1 team
was there a topic/genre or more of a 'turn up and do stuff and share it with us' thing
Yep, one moment
nice thanks

Q: Community Project Highlights 2014

Alex M.Welcome to the first Community Project Highlights! Here's what it's all about: As a member, you can post an answer to this question with details about a personal project (preferably an ongoing project, since one of the points of this is for you to regularly update your answer with extra details,...

That was last year though
:O just noticed that the guy whose tutorial guide i linked to earlier has done a bunch more all relating to what i am trying to do! This is going to save me so much time
@Lokkij was a winner ever chosen?
It wasn't a contest, I think
"That's because at the end of the year, the most voted project will be declared the most popular and will receive a prize."
20:53
Oops!
ooh i spy Tallowmere
i really just want to make a game to publish to the ps4
:P thats why I bought one in the first place :3
oh that reminds me it was greenlit recently wasn't it, better go see if i can buy it
@RhysW "recently"
20:54
@Hjorthenify I have a warped sense of time :P
21:09
:D
@Lokkij Did you ever finish Mentality ?
Nope, it proved to be too ambitious for one programmer and one other guy
They're doing something similar in the CardShifter room though: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/16134/cardshifter-tcg
I'm now creating an XCOM-like with a couple (inexperienced) friends
ooh that sounds good, i played and enjoyed the new xcom for ages, looking forward to the one they are currently making
Yeah I'm very excited about XCOM 2
Our game will be much simpler though :P
:D hows it going so far?
21:16
Pretty well! I had to teach them about concepts like functions and classes because their informatics classes in school turned out to be shit, so it progressed more slowly than expected.
TBH, I could probably complete it more quickly without them, but they provide motivation and it's more fun.
We currently have a grid with walls (friend is working on more intelligent map generation) where you can select and move soldiers (represented by cubes)
They can attack eachother and do other simple things, but not much else
I'm currently working on the structure for special abilities
yeah i imagine its more fun to have other people to work with. still sounds like progress is being made though! Best way to learn is to try and fail repeatedly anyway
Yep! I'm confident I've failed enough now to be able to prevent this project from turning into spaghetti mess
21:30
FINALLY finished that assignment
which one?
For my intro to AI class; had to find an analyze some piece of recent interdisciplinary research related to AI and had to analyze visual perception as it applies to the game of Set
i understood about 5% of that
but congrats for finishing it!
Haha thanks
Well I'm going to bed now. o/
yeah good idea me too cya all
21:42
@Lokkij ooo sounds interesting :D
; - ; and I'm here learning boring biology
