@ParanoidPanda just a quick ping to let you know that George published another video.
This one starts with a guitar riff, so you don't have to worry if it "accidentally" gets set as your home page again.

oh my. I am literally lol'ing. Did that happen?

What?

> so you don't have to worry if it "accidentally" gets set as your home page again.
the video was hilarious too ;)
especially the very beginning xD

Yeah, I never know how to pronounce it either :P
Out of curiosity, do the captions show by default?

@NathanOsman no, they do not.

1:06 AM
Ah.

Hi!

@Unihedron Hello.

Does anyone know if I can remove xchat from this column?
I couldn't look it up because I didn't even know what this column is named.

2:57 AM
That's the messaging menu.
Try xchat's settings, I believe there is one for that @Unihedron.

@Seth The preference settings are only customization and the advanced settings don't seem to have any relevant.

> Disable the tray icon:

Settings → Preferences
Chatting → Alerts
Uncheck the Enable system tray icon checkbox.
still no go?
I'm not sure if this setting will effect the menu or not.
You could also try removing xchat-indicator, if it is installed.

@Seth Nope, still there.
@Seth Ok, I'll just uninstall it altogether.

You will probably have to log out/back in or reboot for it to take effect.
I haven't really messed with the messaging menu in quite a while..

Uninstalling xchat with apt-get remove and relogging works! Thanks a lot for your help!

3:22 AM
np!
Did you uninstall all of xchat or just xchat-indicator?

All of it, I didn't need it anyway. xchat-indicator was installed with xchat so it got removed with the package manager along it.

3:33 AM
ah, ok.
I thought you needed it lol.

Q: How to solve this kernel bug on OS start?

diegoaguilarI just installed a new fresh Ubuntu 12.04.5 on a Dell laptop, I had 14.04 but as I really love 12.04 stability I decided to get back to it. I have a Windows installed alongside which I just keep to have a way to preserve laptop warranty somehow. So, I had used 14.04 with out any problem, but no...

Is it normal to get "Unable to detect file system" warning for msftres partition in Gparted?

@hbdgaf Isn't that about reseting msftree flag. I already have it set
This is my actual partition scheme, btw

err, so sdb is an SSD that windows used for fast-cache-ing/swap?
if so, i would call it normal and just not mess with it

No there is no sdb nor ssd.
just single /dev/sda hard drive

Q: Troubleshooting: portion of laptop screen goes blank

KolditoThis is what the screen of my laptop looks like as of 15 minutes ago. Note the blank 1.5-inch bar on the right hand side (which is now completely black). It appeared suddenly, as I was in the middle of writing an email. The reason I'm posting a picture taken with my phone, rather than a screen...

@Rinzwind not?

nope. he means how to do it from the SQL prompt. and you can't.
it just scrolls the results over the screen with no stopping
Ill bet 10 rep on it that I am correct >:=D

I'm really, really disheartened by the interaction I've had with this site.

Oli
@Rinzwind You can.

I asked askubuntu.com/questions/660703/… (in its original form). @Pilot6 answered "It's not a problem." I clarified. I went to chat. No response, other than "It's just you." I asked here for help and advice. No answer, except @Pilot6's answer on my question gets upvoted twice. I've now re-edited the question, and I think I got to an answer on my own.

12:28 PM
@AdrianoVaroliPiazza I would have phrased that as "I am disappointed with 1 user on this site" :P

I would have done that if I hadn't come here and got 0 answers or help.
I would have done that if his answer wasn't upvoted twice after I had commented on how it didn't help at all.

So you expect me to be here when you have a question? ;-)

you? are you the whole site?

I am part of it so if you blame the site you include me and any other user.

well, then, I guess I ridiculously expect you to be on call at all times.
I'm now spouting ridiculous stuff. Thanks.
I'm really happy with this chat.

12:39 PM
Well from a comment here you state "and I think I got to an answer on my own." So post that answer and accept it. Feel free to make the answer such pilot6's answer becomes invalid :)

nope. sadly, it didn't work either. I do wonder what are you smiling at

Trying to get someone to delete an answer is always a reason to smile.

Who's trying to make someone delete an answer?

See the post I made before that one. And connect "invalid" with "deleting".

I connect "invalid" with "Can be edited" too. I want help, not revenge.
If I'm disheartened it's because I get 0 help, and snark. But hey. I can delete the question. No problem.
I mean, since I'm being ridiculous and all...

Hey, what do you know, it was a problem. Thank you for your help.

@Rinzwind I agree with you, but if he has a problem, then I would delete the answer.

2:07 PM
I've never heard it.

The shape of the universe is the local and global geometry of the Universe, in terms of both curvature and topology (though, strictly speaking, the concept goes beyond both). The shape of the universe is related to general relativity which describes how spacetime is curved and bent by mass and energy. There is a distinction between the observable universe and the global universe. The observable universe consists of the part of the universe that can, in principle, be observed due to the finite speed of light and the age of the universe. The observable universe is understood as a sphere around the...

@NathanOsman Telepathy!
Another one?

I'm on my way to college. Classes start today.
@GeorgetheDev how are you buddy ?

5:16 PM
@Fabby No, not another one :P
Actually, I need ideas for the next one.

@NathanOsman how about kernel upgrade video ?

@Serg Kernel upgrade?

Yeah. Download newest kernel from kernel.org and dpkg -I

It does need to be something that would be humorous to mess up.

5:19 PM
@Serg NO! Something simple...
and that lots of people do!
How about "buying a new car?"

Something lots of people do ? There's a lot of what people do. Like install software with apt-get. But that's not enough for a video. How about overview of different text editors or IDE?

(or buying a new computer?)

Or buying a new girlfriend
No. Scratch that

I should probably clean the dust out of my PC in the next few weeks.
Maybe George should be there for that :P

Fire???
smoke???
mmmh, love it already!

@NathanOsman a lot of people ask how to speed up Ubuntu. Maybe that's worth a video

Not a bad idea.

So you got 3 ideas for 3 videos already! Buy a new computer, Clean an old computer, speed up Ubuntu... >:)

I could probably combine the last two. George thinks that cleaning out the dust speeds up the computer (which could be true to a very limited extent if it was overheating) and then resorts to software "fix-ups" to get more speed out of it.
> "This Unity thing seems to be really slow. I'll just delete it and see if everything runs faster."

5:50 PM
And 4th idea - buying a new girlfriend

I'm not sure how that relates to computers.

@NathanOsman Welcome to dependency hell.

I've seen worse. [cough] Windows .dll files [/cough]

@Seth No flaggable?

Isn't menu.lst rebuilt on update-grub as well?

user136984
@A.B.:What is the fail whale? And why is he/she/it dead...?

@A.B. No, not flaggable. None of the flag reasons fit. Just because it is technically incorrect doesn't mean we delete. There's actually a built in flag decline reason just for that.

@ParanoidPanda it keeps sliding off and I forget to pull it down.

7:24 PM
Oh wait, menu.lst doesn't even exist in grub2...

Ok, I understand
Nice =)

This answer is technically correct, but using md5 so hash passwords is extremely insecure and menu.lst was deprecated with grub2, a very long time ago. — Seth ♦ 12 secs ago
