can anyone help with a logic I do not understand javascript please?

Dubya got jury duty? Something about somebody of such stature being on a jury duty strikes me as a bad idea; somebody else might hate his politics and refuse to agree with him, or perhaps he's simply far better at leading than anybody in the room and get's everybody to line up behind him, any way you slice it, seems prone to problems
If I was a lawyer, I'd try getting him thrown off

Q: Implement algorithm for polygons in javascript

user5115790I have to implement this algorithm in javascript. This article explains the algorithm must be applied. http://lambert.nico.free.fr/tp/biblio/Dougeniketal1985.pdf Is to have multiple polygons, vertices vary with respect to a common value For example, each polygon is a region of a map, then ...

2:21 PM
@RobertHarvey thick rich flavor, but not terribly bitter?

user41796
@JimmyHoffa I'm a strong advocate of terminating all javascript lines with a semicolon too even if the underlying engine will infer it for you.

user114359
@GlenH7 I agree;

@GlenH7 what? no, ugh it's not even 9 and you're trying to pick fights? Why;

user114359

No semicolons in my coffee.

2:22 PM
True. Too early to hash out programming philosophy. Backing to working through some legacy winforms... <sigh>

You just like it when my head pops ? Don't be mean : White space increase readability, semicolons increase reading content;

user41796
@RobertHarvey I wonder how coffeescript's overall adoption rate is going

This Aussie company I'm now working for has UI that doesn't look anything like Winforms.

@GlenH7 I found it quite pleasant...

user41796
@JimmyHoffa semicolons help enforce intent. And that's important.

2:23 PM
@GlenH7 new lines help enforce intent. And that's important.

@Snowman yes!, I need help with this question ..

@user5115790 Did we mention the Javascript chat room? I'm sure we did.

Of course he recommended the JS chat room on SO... failure on my part.

@RobertHarvey it can be so much worse. So much worse. At least the UI framework itself is such that you can't not see what you're supposed to do in any given situation.

I asked in many rooms, but I still have not received a good answer, I tried many things but still no results.

user41796
@RobertHarvey Had a resume come across my inbox with the person advertising themselves as a full stack developer. I laughed.

@user5115790 Then you need to improve your overall Javascript competency by writing more code, reading more books and taking more classes. Javascript is not a difficult language, but like any programming language, it will beat you senseless if you haven't taken the time to learn it properly.

2:28 PM

@GlenH7 everyone knows who he his pretty immediately upon meeting him: Some grumpy gray beard just waiting for you to mention IoC so he can start throwing rocks at you

user41796
Rocks hurt less than ban hammers. Just sayin'

I'm warming up to the idea of IoC a bit. But the interfaces. My God, all those interfaces.

user114359

it's a problem when you have more interfaces than classes.

3:14 PM
@Telastyn no, you know what's a problem? Class inequality and immobility, and immotility! Those are problems!

heheh

Oh, and we don't even use an IoC container here.
Just explicit interface implementation, lots of that.

I'm okay with that.

I have a class with a concurrent dictionary associating T to Func<T>, you really don't need more. Add functions to it that construct the type or return the same constant instance of the type. Voila.

@GlenH7 no have some cats instead

user41796
All of my cats look like dogs.

Hi!!! How are you? :)

@GlenH7 I had a dog that looked like a cat... or maybe that was just a cat that liked to bark, we couldn't really tell

user41796
@JimmyHoffa I think you have to move to a secondary test then - does it pretend to like you or not. If it appears to despise you, then it's a cat.

3:35 PM
@GlenH7 it despised me but would steal food off the table (off the counter, out of the cabinet, fridge, my plate, really anywhere), and begged whenever I had food.

user41796
I'm going with cat on that one.

@GlenH7 it played fetch, and barked at the door whenever someone came around.

user41796
By their own rules, cats aren't allowed to play fetch. So there goes that theory.

How on earth can anybody have as much money and as many personal assistants as Donald Trump - and still have hair like that? Why the hell doesn't he pay to get something that doesn't look completely ridiculous done with it?

It's his trademark or something now.

3:40 PM
@ThomasOwens why would someone choose I-look-like-an-idiot-hair as their trademark? Why would they keep that trademark?

user114359
@JimmyHoffa the same reason Dennis Rodman looks as ridiculous as he does. When you are that rich and famous, you can get away with crimes of fashion.

yeah, there are plenty of other less famously coiffed rich blowhards in the world.

@Telastyn I just don't understand... he thinks so much of himself, yet wants to look stupid when he's trying to sound tough and important?

it's a differentiator.
people remember him because of it, not anything else he's done

He could just wear a jockstrap on his head if he wanted to differentiate himself by looking like a dumbass above the forehead.
the sad part is I'm sure you're all right, I didn't really think of it that way, and that just makes the whole thing worse realizing the stupidity we have people committing to just to get attention and it works on a national scale.

user114359
3:47 PM
@JimmyHoffa Agent K said it best in MIB. "A person is smart, but people are dumb." Some people have figured out how to get national attention by exploiting the fact that groups of people are stupid and behave irrationally.

people have done worse things for fame.

True. He named one of his kids Barron. Apparently whether or not he can be president, he'll at least be the father of a 16th century feudal landowner..

SCIENCE REMINDER: A blizzard doesn't disprove climate change anymore than you being an idiot disproves evolution.

@Telastyn it's pretty clear that evolution made me this way, just like climate change caused that blizzard. The only rational lesson from all of this is that evolution is bringing about another ice age.

I can find no fault in that logic.

3:59 PM
Or maybe it's that blizzards made me stupid? I'm not going to get into the details on this, but I'm certain this is all somehow been caused by big government's focus on climate evolution.

So much hot air.

So in conclusion, common core math's removal of the bucket and carry technique has caused me to evolve into a blizzard.
Wow, give that guy a medal for confusing the meaning of the technical term "native" in one of the most creative ways I've seen

Cue rimshot monkey.

@RobertHarvey really, the possibilities are endless here. Idiots are causing climate change? If we would stop evolving, we could stop climate change dead! Clearly climate change is making blizzards dumber.

4:15 PM
tuple.Item1, tuple.Item2... Bleaugh.

@RobertHarvey yeah... if it's just a local, create an anonymous type with named properties; new { Location = "bla", Color = "ick" };
anonymous types are good for that when dealing with termporary local stuff, but if the value is going to be a parameter into a method or a return value from your method, no can do..

Last night's Netflix session results: The Canal is a well made well put together movie with good tricks and implementation, but an ultimately flawed, boring, and terribly obvious story. It spends the entire movie trying but failing to make you wonder what's real and what's not- as from about 15 minutes in, it's utterly obvious. Everything after those first 15 minutes is just fun imagery with no real punch because it fails to evoke the uncertainty it's entirely geared to do. It ends on an attempt to be visually provocative which succeeds only in being grody.

@JimmyHoffa tl;dr don't watch the canal

Q: How much time should I put into design?

Rafael CichockiI've spent six full days so far working on a spec for a web-app component. I feel that the...

@durron597 iduno, reviewers were falling all over themselves for it, and it does a lot of tthings well, there's a certain type of horror movie watcher who will like it, but the vast majority won't. If you still think Nightmare on Elm Street is the height of horror, you'd probably like it; but you also shouldn't be watching any modern horror at all if you still think the classics are relevant.

I don't really like horror

4:46 PM
@Snowman Collaboration! This is why I absolutely hate designing in a vaccuum, if I can't put a design together and then hand it off and have it used by at least one other developer in the following month or two I feel irritated.
It's like sending code to production without any QA. If you get calls because it's broke you know you screwed up, if you don't, you have no idea if you screwed up or not. So it goes with designs that only you ever use.

WTF is going on movies I've liked: Inception, Memento, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 12 Monkeys
But I don't like "wtf is going on because something lurking around the next corner is going to bite my head off"

user114359
@ThomasOwens without spending the time right now to read those essays, I will say I have heard arguments both ways and it is more nuanced than that. Sometimes, code can be design. But not always. Even if it is, my statement that the metrics are different still applies. Whether you document the design in a Word document or the code itself is irrelevant, they are separate activities with different success criteria.

5:36 PM
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this probably belongs on programmers.stackexchange.com (see programmers.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic) — Andy Brown just now

anyone else having trouble with youtube?

@Snowman usage-by-developers is the only way I've ever been able to determine success criteria. Designs I've worked out and then used as a basis of something someone else was doing or I was doing with someone else were the only ones where I felt I knew conclusively they were capable of living through maintenance and extension by others over time, of being usable/useful/helpful to others

yeah, I understand the motivation for objective measurement, but people spent a lot of time fucking about with that to produce dubious results.

@Snowman Code is always the final source of design. Any "paper" or models is used to make it easier to understand. You may develop some models first to aid in communication, but the truth is always in the code.
But you should read the papers at some point.

@gnat great! replied.

user114359
@ThomasOwens That is the point of my answer to that question, the artifacts are all linked. Design documentation is not always needed. Sometimes the code is sufficient. But for larger systems, having just enough (but not too much) documentation can be a huge help. Regardless, the code is what actually runs and makes the system go: not the documentation.

user114359
@GlenH7 I know, it does not take much to have serious side effects and even death. Most caffeinated beverages have a small enough amount that an adult human would need to guzzle them so fast it is not feasible to have those types of reactions.

user114359
I have heard it is easier to get water intoxication than a real caffeine overdose, at least from drinking caffeinated beverages.

@RobertHarvey Csharpicide: The act of killing robots run by netduino microcontrollers.

Is the netduino any good? Or are you better off getting something like a BeagleBone Black board?
I bought my wife this computer about a month ago:
Except that, when I ordered it, it was $300, not $500, and it came with an extra 4GB of memory.
Great little computer. Too bad it's too expensive now for me to get one.

I've had a number of acer products with nothing but good results. Asus on the other hand has given me no end of fits...

Seems like a good, basic desktop computer. It wouldn't handle the load I throw at my computers (compiling, video editing, gaming, etc) but great for 90% of people.

@Snowman for $300 it's a hell of a platform if it has a PCI-E x16 slot available; stick it in a new case, new PSU, and an aftermarket GPU and you'd be golden.. you could easily get all of the above for $200
I game with no trouble on a lower end Haswell chip then that at home

user114359
@JimmyHoffa the problem is the i3. It is great for desktop use, but there is no way it would stand up to the load a serious desktop user would throw at it.

Alas, I don't think you can get it for $300 anymore. The lowest price I can find is $400 on Amazon. We must have gotten a hell of a deal on it.

@Snowman nah; games don't do dick on CPU. I've been gaming for like 2 years now on a $60 pentium G3220 because the Haswell and newer chips are so great

Angry Birds and Candy Crush?

I have I think a GTX 570 or something, I don't remember.. runs pretty much everything at max settings...

user114359
I have a Core i7 Ivy Bridge and newer games definitely use the CPU. While the GPU is more important, you still need more than an i3 for serious gaming. And Handbrake and other graphics apps would make that CPU cry.

user114359
Not to mention Visual Studio. Compiling a non-trivial app maxes all 8 virtual cores

user114359
But again, great for most people. I would buy one for my wife.

@Snowman handbrake uses CPU, but you can use the word "need", I get over 60fps out of my $60 Haswell CPU on everything so I can't be given to caring what people are always saying is "necessary"...

@JimmyHoffa Great, but I am comparing a dual core i3 with a hyperthreaded quad core i7 for a task that is highly concurrent. Your Haswell is actually one generation newer than my Ivy Bridge. What model is it?

I splurged for a 4790K in my latest build, but use the onboard video.

@Snowman Pentium. Cheaper than the i3 Haswell @RobertHarvey is referring to
That's funny, they're so desirable for their cheapness they're actually gone up $10 from when I bought mine like two years ago

user114359
I just grabbed a GeForce GTX 960. One of the newer budget cards that is as good as last generation's high-end.

@Snowman Yeah, that's my point: Haswell and later is amazing. You don't even need high end CPUs anymore with what the low-end ones are doing; even for gaming.
If you play video games while running handbrake and compiling enterprise software all at the same time then you'll chug. But I really have no problems running max settings on all my games and getting solid 60+ frames; then again perhaps the modern high end chips and such become necessary if you're doing 4k, but I don't see myself spending the money for one of those displays for a long time..

@Snowman I'm having trouble finding the exact answer to my JScrollPane problem. From what I've seen so far, it seems like it acts the same way as a JButton in the sense that it needs a Layout.

If you do ask, post a link here and I will check it out when I have time.

user114359
But it sounds like you are searching, so that is good. Given that I know similar questions have already been asked, it might help to post links to similar questions and explain why your question is different.

user114359
Sometimes that acts as a type of Duck Debugging, and the answer will come to you.

This question would be more appropriate on Programmers (but make sure to check if it wouldn't be a duplicate and checking that it conforms to the rules specified in their help center first). — Dukeling 39 secs ago

@LinkTheProgrammer I went to all that trouble to get you un-qbanned and you still haven't asked your questions on main?

user114359
@RobertHarvey this question that Duga just linked actually looks like it should be migrated to Programmers.

I searched and couldn't find a dupe here, either.

@Snowman Guy still hasn't made a progs account. I hope he does eventually.

@Ampt I need your professional and expert advice on something. I've got half an idea for a personal bug tracker application. The acronym for this would be "PBT". However, it would be much more fun for this to be "PBR". What word change do I need to make to make this application a "PBR"? (since you know all about PBR... right?)

user114359
@MichaelT Keep it classy!

user55340
@Snowman KIC does not work as an acceptable abbreviation.

which reminds me, I need to fax my PBR reminder to myself

How about it's PBR because it's the "No Trouble Personal Bug Tracker"?

A Kentuckian, Californian, and Washingtonian go camping. At the campfire, the Kentuckian pulls out some top shelf whiskey, drinks a swing, caps it, tosses the bottle in the air and shoots it. He says "Don't worry, we have plenty of good whiskey where I'm from."

The Californian pulls out a bottle of premium wine, drinks a bit, corks it, tosses it in the air, shoots it. He says "Don't worry, where I come from there's plenty of good wine."

The Washingtonian gets out a can of PBR and carefully drinks it and sets it down and then shoots the Californian. The Kentuckian looks in surprise and
