Hi @user62015!

My hands hurt now.
My brain hurts a bit.
13:13
Hello ladies, gentlemen, and other.
On behalf of all the robots in this corner of the galaxy, hello!
Not sure if Jim saw the message... Going back to reading stuff on his iPad... If you want me, ping me!
I saw, but have I seen? If I travelled back into time, is it that I will have sawn?
Recent past should be okay, I think. :-)
To use either, I mean.
How are you going? :P
Good thanks. I've been creeping in and answering a qurstion here and there recently. It's nice.
I saw that. I'm glad that you still drop by sometimes. :-)
13:28
I feel I have an obligation to help the less knowledgeable.
O.O
On behalf of the ELLers, I thank you. :D
I made another gallery chat room. I don't know if you've noticed that. I was thinking about inviting you to join, but it looked like you were still busy at work.
Good afternoon!
Good evening!
"I am gradually moving away from design and now spend more time on photography." - I wonder if this combination is okay: progressive + simple
Jim would know better, but it's fine for me.
13:32
The original sentence was "I gradually move away" - it seemed strange to me.
Because move is a "momentous" verb, or whatever they call it
Hmm... I think I'm okay with that too, but I like your edit better.
I agree with the robot.
@JimReynolds Thank you!
"I move away" seemed like a commentary uttered on a current short-term action, as in "now I move my hand up"
Maybe it's my first language (sometimes I'm not sure which language influences my thoughts when I think in English), but I can imagine move (or a movement) either fast and slow.
@DamkerngT. Same here.
"Наше предприятие идет в ногу со временем" - our company moves/is moving in lockstep with the progress. (the reader has to guess from the context)
13:36
For example, in English, there is something like at full throttle, and there also is something like at a glacial pace.
Our company moves is used to indicate a general truth.
@JimReynolds But what if our company only started following the general progress in the field 3 years ago?
Like water freezes at 0C.
@JimReynolds But clearly "I gradually drift away from programming" would not be a general truth.. (0:
It can still mean "always", "usually", "generally", regardless of how long it's been true.
Right.
13:40
@JimReynolds Perhaps move is fine in a mission statement. (It makes me think of something like that.) Like, It is our mission to move in lockstep with the progress of social network technologies.
It's our mission to move. We move. Our company moves. In that direction.
It's possible to say that, but we use it for a certain effect.
It can give a sense of particular "realness" or intensity.
I don't know how to describe this well. It can give an immediacy.
It's a rather artful or poetic use.
@JimReynolds Yes, that's what I thought. Immediacy. "I gradually move towards the table, look at me, the audience!"
Exactly.
A sense of drama.
13:45
My past forays into StackExchange (have?) bore some fruit. I remembered this from some post.
You would not use any article before audience there.
In caae you're interested!
@JimReynolds why? In my understanding, the audience is a group of people who have gathered in a theater or stadium. Or is it "the public"?
I think it's because tenses and aspects of English are dichotomous (like present vs. past, simple vs. progressive, simple vs. prefect) that we have one form for normal expressions and another for a special effect.
Bore is ok. Ww would more likely use has borne fruit.
@JimReynolds Thank you!
13:48
(I was thinking of marked vs. unmarked, but I wasn't very sure if it was about marked vs. unmarked.)
If you are addressing the audience, you would say, "Hello, audience." No the.
@JimReynolds Thank you! I need to refresh my article usage knowledge..
Well, I usually don't correct such errors as a teacher, unless a learner is particularly interested in grammar.
We learn and remember more (generally) if we just relax and enjoy reading more.
@JimReynolds I agree.
O.O
That should be, "I a agree."
13:54
My friend who has been a teacher in NY for 10 years still posts messages like "I watched the movie [movie title] today. And it was actually second time I watched it. First time was in July 2001."
hello
all
Articles are very hard to learn..
Methinks: I gradually move away from design. (Please sympathize with me, my dear reader.)
@fahdijbeli - hello!
, deploying applications in the Cloud is not a trivial task and doing so is time consuming and error prone
13:55
@DamkerngT. Thanks!
in that sentence I doubte I have a bad bind
a trivial task and doing so is time c
@CopperKettle Maybe I read too much into Fifty Shades of You Know What. :-)
I think and doing so is ... is not appropriate
@DamkerngT. (0:
Hmm... Interesting response Dam.
I can't think of a situation in which I'd use "I gradually move away from design . . ."
13:58
@fahdijbeli My quick fix would be something like and such a task.
Well, in narrative.
Sometimes to move a story forward.
@DamkerngT. sorry i dont understand
Hullo!
14:00
@fahdijbeli I mean, I would replace and doing so with and such a task.
@HarryCBurn Hullo!
@DamkerngT. Good to see you again!
@HarryCBurn Heh! It was just yesterday, I think! The last we met. :-)
But it's true that it's good for me to see you again, too!
In 1957, Henry Ford moves gradually away from the daily management of his company and picks up a new hobby . . . one that would change thw very fabric of society.
@JimReynolds The division of labor!
before the and is a trivial task and after the and is task and costs times @DamkerngT.
14:03
I'm confused! :P
> BEFORE: deploying applications in the Cloud is not a trivial task and doing so is time consuming and error prone
> AFTER: deploying applications in the Cloud is not a trivial task and such a task is time consuming and error prone
@JimReynolds Nice example, thank you!
I can see or hear how it might be used that way, but I think I've never read a grammatical explanation of such a use of the present simple.
I wonder if Cloud needs to be capitalized, but I think it's okay either way.
A man walks into a bar and says . . . .
@JimReynolds I think it falls into the same category as hot news.
14:05
@JimReynolds "reporting style", I remember reading something about this
(I'm sure there must be a better term for that!)
@DamkerngT. ah yes yes you are right thanks :)
No problem. :D
@DamkerngT. :)
@DamkerngT. :*
14:07
@DamkerngT. As in I saved my data in the cloud?
Yes. I'm not familiar with the Cloud being capitalized, but then again, I usually write the Internet. -- Weird me!
Deploying applications in the Cloud
Is hardy work for mentally endowed
(off to make some tea)
@DamkerngT. I don't think it is.
You wouldn't capitalize router, would you? c:
I wouldn't!
Then the cloud shall remain a normal noun ;p
14:13
But the Internet used to be capitalized before, and I got stuck with writing it that way.
nods -- My guts say it should be the cloud, but maybe the Cloud is okay, too.
hola
Deploying applications in the cloud

Non-trival, with outcomes unknown,
It's time consuming, and is error prone

A: Why is the surface of the moon white?

OmryThe moon is actually grey. You can see this if you look at images taken in space, or, preferably, on the moon itself. For example, this one, of Buzz Aldrin: (Courtesy of NASA) But, seeing as how at night you compare it to a black sky, it appears white.

Ideas on grey vs. white in comments?
Describing colors with words is a very confusing task.
Also, no light, no color.
But still, we recognize it's difference.
FWIW, it looks like an answer to me. :D
18:25
@DamkerngT. That's not true for excited Rhodium complexes, or Na's flame color.

c:
Cool!
(Back in a second, recording a video.)
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Because they are the light source itself!
Well, I blew your argument. Well worth it.
19:03
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You seem to have gotten turned around.
I was spinning and while at it I reached my tautomer @Cat.
@HarryCBurn I'd always assumed it appears white because the sky is such a huge contrast... being black. Things that are "overexposed" always fade to white, regardless of their actual color.
@Catija That's a good argument.
@Catija @oerkelens If it's possible, please star this message so our old visitors can know about this room: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/22724305#22724305. Thanks in advance.

@snailboat +1 It looks curious, too. :-)
What time of year, and where can that happen? Astronomers surely know the answer.
@snailboat It's actually called earthshine. It's when you have a new or nearly new moon and it's usually only visible around dawn or dusk.
Anonymous
@Catija Thanks! I'm going to read about that later tonight :-)
So the light hitting the moon in this case is reflecting off of the Earth first and then going to the "dark side" of the moon..

Q: Singular possessive, plural possessive or neither

What "the order of actions" is called and what is the meaning of the following choices? action order (my guess) actions order actions' order action's order For several times, I have encountered suc...

I feel like "action order" should be perfectly fine in that use... but I can't explain it. :(
It'd be the same as "set order" for a band's performance play-list or "script order" for a chronological progression through a script.
If they used "click" instead of "action" it seems natural, too. The "click order" is the order of a sequence of clicks.
20:46
I think it's unfortunate that somehow some learners read (or were taught to read!) Y's X as "X of Y" and X of Y as "X that belongs to Y".

Well, it's useful to know that those constructions have some overlap (and to know how much or how little overlap that is)

@DamkerngT. Both X of Y and Y's X are commonly referred to as genitives, although it's rather confusing using the same term for two different things like that. Y X is sometimes referred to as genitive as well.
One problem is that of serves so many functions/meanings.
Anonymous
To be more precise, the of Y, Y's, and Y in each have been referred to as genitives. (But I only refer to Y's as genitive.)
