@Hosch250 that answers your question?

Yup.
If you are running Windows, that Resx editor might help you with the translations (pimping my work).
It highlights changes in both files, and allows you to edit, add, and remove keys with it.

@Hosch250 sounds similar to what @Vogel612 was making...

Only I think I beat him to it (and started afterward).

12:08 AM
might be so

Actually, I was inspired by him.

Feature request: Could you support showing more than one base translation?

Yeah, up next.

when I translate, I would like to see both French and English translations
good good

I think I'm going to turn everything into a list and support N translations.

12:09 AM
That's the spirit!
Yours is made with C#, I guess? Running with .NET platform?

Yes.
It can run on anything with .NET 4.5 at least (possibly earlier, not sure).

good good
Btw, I read a job ad today where .NET was being referred to as a programming language. I instantly thought, "that's not a language, that's a platform!"

Opens solution to program support for N languages.

In another job ad they referred to Linux as a programming language...

:O
Don't apply!

12:12 AM
I didn't.

So, let's see...
I'll let it support 1+ files...
It'll need to have an Add and a Remove button...
Hmm.

btw, as I said:

Sure enough.
This'll be 2.0 for sure.

Q: Checking network connection with VBScript

NateI'm running a web-based slideshow on multiple computer units. I have a VBScript that runs on startup, opens IE and navigates to a specific page in fullscreen mode. Everything works great, as long as there's an internet connection on startup. If there isn't then the page never loads. Is there a wa...

Q: EXCEL VBA: how to increase the speed of this code

Abdul ShiyasThis code works. Since it has too many loop, loop inside loop, this works very slowly. How can we increase the speed of this program? A: VBA "Compile Eror: Label not defined"

FreeManRemove Goto from the call to your Sub() If you really wanted to use a Goto (and you shouldn't), you would goto Label Label: where the label is defined by the trailing semi-colon :

@FreeMan there's no legal semicolon in VBA...

and... that's why I put the character in there. Thx, I've edited.

No. She's not stable enough for that yet. She's running very slowly as-is already.

I'm probably forgetting something, but I think the only thing left is the highlight.

@Phrancis starting VS, about to put the finishing touches on proper reference resolution in Rubberduck

@Duga so you went flashy after all ;-)

Thing is, I don't know how to use datatriggers dynamically on an unknown amount of columns.
Probably have to add them dynamically when I add the column.
@Mat'sMug I figured I might as well learn them.
Took a bit for me to figure out how to use another eventtrigger to remove the storyboard.

isn't WPF awesome :)

And before that, another bit to figure out that I had to use "Background.Color", not "Background", because the one is a SolidColorBrush, and the other a Color.
Yup.

@Mat'sMug Just had a really quick Word VBA question

Q: Understanding VBA Code for Search and Retrieval

114Sorry if this isn't the right place, but I was wondering if someone might be able to help explain the details of how this code does what it does: Sub test() Dim NameValue As String, w1 As Worksheet, w2 As Worksheet Dim i As Long, j As Long, k As Long, c As Long Set w1 = Sheets("Sheet2") Set w...

@StackExchange Off topic.

I'm sorry. Seeking explanations of code is off topic here. — RubberDuck 1 min ago
As is using a GOTO to get to the end of a For...Next loop.

@FreeMan yuck. I didn't even notice..

I saw the labels, started trembling, then read the code hoping someone had simply used them as a misguided attempt at commenting code. No such luck...

that's actually a legit use of GoTo IMO. VBA has no Continue statement, so the only way to "skip an iteration" is to label the Next statement and jump there.
...or to add a nesting level

5:27 PM
That ^. Mug's right. Looks legit actually.
It's actually not awful code. Just off topic.

Instead of If X then GOTO (end of loop), I would write it If not X then (process) - eliminates the need for the gotoand should be just as clear...

^^ adds a nesting level

He's already got the If...end if in there - it's just a matter of reversing the condition to cause action

the proper way is to add that nesting level and extract the loop body into its own method. But pre-Rubberduck there was no tool to do that easily ;-)
@RubberDuck got any ideas for speeding up this one?

@Mat'sMug Looking at it in between other things.

5:38 PM
I just reviewed it, FWIW

[Vogel612/TranslationHelper]‌ Vogel612 pushed commit f0979655 to master: Removed obsolete overload for intially loading files

Oh. Shit. That's easy. ADODB recordsets.
There's no reason to open the first workbook.

there you go ducky!
(ping me when you've posted it, I'm minimizing my browser now)

6:03 PM
Eh, modelling stuff is always fun
I've got users and persons in my application
As an user you're also a person, but do you model that as User extends Person or as you create an User that has a key to a Person

preferrably usually the latter

What's the context?

there's also Users that aren't necessarily a person (think system, Community, ...)

[Hosch250/ResxEditor] Hosch250 pushed commit 7a4984be to Version2: DataTrigger highlights rows with missing values (needs to be refreshed after values change)

You could always make a person that has a Boolean value IsUser...

6:07 PM
meh... that would again require that a User always is a Person...

@Vogel612 That's a very good point

Yeah.

sure it can work, but only as long as you don't make your DB validation too strict..

I've got two issues in my resx editor preventing a release.

hmm... Currently on my way to get Edits finished...
then I can go for an early release of an alpha...

6:09 PM
First, when you edit a row, the highlight doesn't change until you sort a column, forcing a refresh.

Now I'd have an User that has name fields (like first/middle/last name), and the Person would also have that, is that bad design?

Second, when you add a row, it doesn't highlight at all.

@Mat'sMug ping

Third, when you add a key, then add a value, the sort breaks (why, I don't know).

@Hosch250 You said there were only two issues

6:10 PM
Well, you know how issues multiply.
The two reproduced and had a third.

@skiwi Inflation!

@Vogel612 Do you think it's bad if both tables (that are linked together via a key) share a few fields for the sake of performance?

6:18 PM
depends..
sometimes it's the better option of two poisons...
I'd enforce correctness of the information by making updates of the respective columns trigger a check and update on the other table
that may lead to inconsistent states with simultaneous updates and so on and so forth.

@RubberDuck pong!
2

the join cost shouldn't be that high...

@Vogel612 Hmm yeah... I'll need to think about it
I may be over-thinking things anyways
I might keep an User as dumb as email + password

cough..
basically a user is: id, authentication and authorization

What's lacking then?

6:26 PM
the authorization should be hash + salt

Of course
Never plain password

add in a session token if you only want to allow one active session per user
@skiwi I have seen this...

@Vogel612 Session management seems already more complicated

meh... a token and username on client and server.
usually enough..

I'm trying to understand the deal with the session token
You log in on frontend -> Backend verifies data and returns session token -> Front end stores session token
Then what?
You send it with every API call?

6:31 PM
sure...
how else could you do itß?
it's just a shortcut to saying "hey I did auth, and I am XY"

I'm maybe too used to PHP when talking about websites
I probably should also write tests for my User model?

meh...
depends on what definition of Model you have..
if you're talking about the hibernate kind, then it's basically moot
if you're Talking about the MVP / MVC kind, you probably should, yea

I'm not exactly sure what you mean

the kind where you put business or DAO logic..
the hibernate kind is dumb POJOs
-> testing getters is inane

class User {
    static constraints = {
        email email: true, unique: true
    }

    String email
    String password
    String token
}
I can think about wanting to test for invalid email addresses and entering same email twice?

6:40 PM
DAO logic..
run a double insert against your equivalent of EntityManager on an empty test-db...
verify you get a nice error back.

But those should be in the domain tests?

IMO yes...

GORM (Groovy ORM) is essentialy the DAO here, right?

yes

Okay...
And obviously I should insert an okay that's okay
Another thing,
The domain class should store the password as-is, and the service layer is responsible of hashing/salting it?

6:52 PM
There's no point in that
you never want/need the uncooked password
Make it ready for consumption as soon as possible
(I walked around Bruges for the past two days. The smells from each story really get to you)

@skiwi the shorter you have the PW in clear, the less chance to accidently lose it somewhere...
like in a logfile..
or in memory in general

Or plain simple memory inspectio--- yeah that

No, I mean

Besides, another layer for security is storing the password as a char array rather than a string
make sure you can overwrite that shizzle

All the domain object knows about is a String, preferably the hashed+salted string in the real world
You don't feed the domain object a plain-text password and then use on-update magic to hash+salt it, right?

6:56 PM
As soon as the password enters your program, you hash it
simple as that
Whether it's from the front (UI) or back (DB)

Okay
But it will always go through a service layer that will hash it

meh...
the service layer is probably too late.

yes, you have to do the hashing of course. Either in your controller, repository or any other equivalent that's relevant to your scenario
Controller is front door, repository is back door

Okay
Now I"m getting into this point, yay

Q: unit testing the unique constraint on domain class

John CartwrightI'm using Grails 2.4.1 and having trouble understanding how to properly test a unique constraint on a domain class. My domain class looks like: class Person { String name static constraints = { name( unique: true, blank: false ) } } and my test: @TestFor(Person) @Test...

I don't think the tests hurt
Else you might as well not test anything because clearly you don't make any errors when writing the code

hmm.. at least you use something halfway sensible as issue tracker..
and not the DIY madness we use in my current company

@Vogel612 could someone create a GitHub repo without any code just to use the issues and labels and milestones?

probably, yes...
you'd even get a halfway agile thingie with waffle..
then again it'd be complete madness to let the customer see what the heck we're writing at times...

OK, I'm not at all sure how to fix this last issue.
Time to take my dog on a walk.

ugh I'll get back to telling property getter from setter tonight. break time.

7:37 PM
hmmm,... should I bug rolfl now??...

lol

hmm... need to find out about XPath to grab the element to update after editing...

@Vogel612 Well, there are such things as private repos, for a small fee ;)

let's just say it's not viable...
especially not in comparison to a proper issue tracker, that can do all that stuff without much changing

7:56 PM
@Vogel612 XPath shouldn't be hard
What's the issue?

grab one element (name data), who's attribute ('name') equals a specific value

Google to the rescue?

/self::data/@name=value ??
@skiwi well.. you asked...

But it doesn't work?

I'm not even getting to that state right now..
because XPathFactory gives me a XPathExpression<Object> and not XPathExpression<Element>
brb. smoking the manual
