@Duga What is this young upstart, anyway?

@RubberDuck @Mat'sMug @Hosch250 I see there are a couple of bugs holding up the next release involving the installer script. I've read through the issue a couple of times, trying to get my head around the issue. Here is what I can understand.

Yes?

The big issue is that there are two registrations that happen.

I don't know anything about this, but maybe I can help you rubberduck it.

isn't in the middle of the night for you?

11:15.

4:15 AM
oh that's not too bad.
I was just leaving a note really. Probably should do it on GH but can't login from here.

OK.

damn, 12:16 already

Anyway, there are two registrations. One the registration of a COM component and the other the registration of an Addin with Office.
reading github.com/retailcoder/Rubberduck/issues/458 it seems that the office registration is happening (hence the complaint from Excel that the addin wasn't found when it went looking for a com registered dll that the registry said should exist).

can the office/VBE registration happen under HKLM?

4:29 AM
[retailcoder/Rubberduck] Hosch250 pushed commit 21b27e16 to next: Convert extract method combo box column to a textboxcolumn to get rid of the arrow that does nothing

@Mat'sMug Have to brute force that one. But it seems like that isn't mwolfe02's problem. That part seems to work. Would need to have a clean system (uninstall, check registry keys do not exist) to confirm that though.
Its weird though since they have the typical system (Win64 + Office32). Which is what I have.
I'd like to know if they still have issues when it is installed to the appdata folder
rather than prog files
I wonder if the installer is installing it in "C:\Program Files" registering it there and then when Office asks for the file Windows redirects it to "C:\Program Files (x86)" since it is a 32 bit app.
Unfortunately, we're not outputting any debug information in the installer to identify what is going on.
Which may be easier than trying to shoot in the dark.
Maybe I should step in on the GH thread and address the OP myself.

if it helps, sure!
I think christophocles' claim doesn't hold water though
RD needs to expose a COM API, which isn't what the typical VBE add-in does

BTW we are only registering the Rubberduck.dll during installation. Not the unit testing one.
Not sure if that is released yet or not though.
You can see the COM registration occurs in the following lines:
[Run]
; http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5618337/how-to-register-a-net-dll-using-inno-setup
Filename: "{dotnet4032}\RegAsm.exe"; Parameters: "/codebase {#AddinDLL}"; WorkingDir: "{app}"; Flags: runascurrentuser runminimized; StatusMsg: "Registering Controls..."; Check: Is32BitOfficeInstalled
Filename: "{dotnet4064}\RegAsm.exe"; Parameters: "/codebase {#AddinDLL}"; WorkingDir: "{app}"; Flags: runascurrentuser runminimized; StatusMsg: "Registering Controls..."; Check: Is64BitOfficeInstalled

[UninstallRun]
The rest of the code section (100+ lines) is just to figure out what bitness office is and do the office registration.

4:45 AM
@Rossco I folded Rubberduck.UnitTesting.dll back into Rubberduck.dll

So when you see HKCU32 in the script that all relates to Office registration.
@Mat'sMug yeah I saw that. So at least that problem goes away.

HCLU?

I have a cold.
That's my excuse and I'm going to stick to it.

@RubberDuck Just came accross something old...
12
A: New answers on old questions using new language features

RubberDuckI don't see anything wrong with posted answers with new technology on old posts. Times change and what would have been good advice 2 or 3 years ago might not be the best advice to give today. It is also reasonable to assume that OP just might still be maintaining the code and should be alerted to...

Isn't it better at times to just throw away a (small) method/class and suggest to rewrite it entirely?

@Rossco @Mat'sMug I just skimmed the conversation, but mwolfe's problem is that it was built on the 14 PIA. Needed to use 12. (2007). I think. I'm not 100% on that.

> Everything here is working except the Ignore and Attributes file. I've not been able to decide exactly what those buttons should do. Obviously, they need to open the files, but in what editor? Do we build our own, or pass it off to an external one? I think, for now, passing the responsibility off to a third party would be wise, but we'll need a text editor for snippets/templates at some point anyway.

Okay. For now, I'll see if I can't make these open in whatever the default program is. Nice

@Mat'sMug I barely even remember that :)
@Duga Looks like you quackers have some competition now.
@Hosch250 Cactus is a adventure-game engine in Python. Or at least meant to be one. Not sure how much progress they have.

[retailcoder/Rubberduck] ckuhn203 pushed commit a31d95f4 to sourcecontrol: Edit Git settings file works, if they exist #487
> If the .gitignore and .gitattributes files don't exist, the buttons do nothing. Instead they should create new default files. Per #453, GitProvider.InitVBAProject() should probably be creating a default file anyway. The two issues are intimately related.

No. No Monking today.

@RubberDuck we could reference the v12 PIA's, I see no problem with that :-)

Morning Mug.

Monking!

I'm not positive that's the problem though.
One big challenge left for Git integration though. =)
Settings is finished.
I should have nightmares more often. I get tons of coding done while everyone else sleeps.

lol

Oh well. Off to work. Bbiab.

12:37 PM
@RubberDuck wait, settings work?! Nice!
What's the big challenge?
I think the stack overflow exception I'm getting with identifier resolution has to do with a grammar bug, I'll have to regenerate the parser again

Hey @FreeMan

monkin', @RubberDuck!
@SimonAndréForsberg That is stellar!
Yay! I finally got the floating vote icons! I like 'em, though it's obvious a lot of people don't.

1:37 PM
I really do find it distracting.

@RubberDuck wait does that mean SCI is making it into 1.4?

@Mat'sMug doubtful buddy. Even if it might be ready. I'm not sure it'd really be ready. Idk.
So many failure states

even as a "beta"?

I've got at least 10 issues open that really need to be done before it's released.
Ehhhhh..... maybe.

I've found a number of showstoppers yesterday, might have the time :)

1:44 PM
It scares me, tbh. I don't want to see anybody lose their work or anything like that.
Well, if that's the case, maybe.
Basically, I have everything working "so long as it's a sunny day".

[Vannevelj/VSDiagnostics] Vannevelj pushed commit 1d3381c0 to autoproperties: changed some naming
> My kingdom for a fix. I can't manage to pindown what is causing this but I have noticed that everything seems to work fine until you create a property with a private setter. After that, it randomly crashes Visual Studio. Things that seemed to have caused it:

* Writing a method
* Deleting the property
* Waiting a varying amount of seconds

2:10 PM
So, high level overview, how does the SCI work with an Access/Excel/Word VBA codebase?

@FreeMan just like in a C#/VB.NET codebase in VS2013 :)

@SimonAndréForsberg That's kinda funny if you read it as hash bang bin bash...
Except that in a normal language, the code is stored in a .c or .cs or .vb file for each module of code, while VBA code is stored embedded with lots of other stuff in a .XLSX or .ACCDB or .DOCX file.
does SCI automatically save each module as a .BAS then load that to Git? Is it a manual-export to .bas then store in Git?

@FreeMan basically, it exports all of the code files out of the project and into the file system in their own individual files.

Cool! Was wondering if it took care of the export/import automatically - was hoping it did so.

So, when you commit, RD exports the files to the repo and then performs the commit.

2:14 PM
nice.

Yup! That was the whole idea.

@FreeMan it wouldn't be the best VBE add-in around if it didn't! :)

Kid #2 graduated last Sat, and the Open House is this coming Sat, so after all the chaos is done, I'll get back to reading up on some C# and start poking my nose into the code.

@RubberDuck I hope you're proud of what you've done here

^?

2:16 PM
@Mat'sMug lol. I'll be proud when it's stable.
I've gotta say though, making that first commit from the IDE was..... amazing.

At least he didn't say when I'm stable.

Oh well, that isn't ever gonna happen...

@RubberDuck that's why I think we should release it as a beta with 1.4 - with 300-some users we're sure to get all the bugs reported in no time

3:44 PM
@StackExchange which part of "broken === off-topic" is unclear?

@ticker at least he got the point quickly

Not sure what to do.
I think I'll start working through IDReference resolutions.

@Hosch250 branch next into a new dev branch and start working on the 1.5 refactorings?

Yeah, I could do that.
Which is more important?

I'm pretty sure there's a grammar bug causing that SO exception in the resolution code, will take care of it tonight

3:46 PM
I'd rather have fewer working refactorings than many busted ones.

@Hosch250 Inline Method has been nagging me since 1.2

No, I mean the way setter/getter combos don't work.

Disable the built-in declarations and diagnose: do getters and setters have their references resolved?

Nevermind.
The Code Inspections window crashes when you open it after clicking OK in the Options window.
Something about it not having a handler.

Good idea - stress-test everything and kill as many bugs as you can before we release! :)

VBProject reference equality working when it feels like, will definitely cause issues too

3:51 PM
Why don't you just use ==?
Or .Equals(), or whatever is the reference comparer?

Same thing. None of it works.

Oh.

I mean it works the first time, then starts failing after a reparse
Likely related to caching

Hmm, none of the windows work after clicking OK, but that is the only one that crashes.

4:10 PM
On a different note, I think I may have found the remaining memory leak.
We never dispose of our presenters.

hmm

Doing that now.
OK, definitely not the issue.

You could check with the BBC to find out how they disposed of Clarkson...

All that did was make Excel crash out of debug.
I don't know what is happening.
It works plenty fine when you unload/reload the whole thing...
Oh, I think I found it.
Testing.
Darn.

When you close Excel with RD running in the debugger?

Hmm.

5:07 PM
I think I found the cause.. Right before things crashed and died horribly, I noticed it tried to report two diagnostics at the very same location.
Saliant note: it's twice the same diagnostic. In a HashSet.

Don't you love debugging something when you have -1 ideas where to start?

@JeroenVannevel that sounds supernatural

At least I might learn something...

oh shit
@JeroenVannevel I think you just gave me an idea of where to start looking

@Mat'sMug Comes with the territory when you write quantumficialhypersuperdupernatural code like me

@Hosch250 Notes that she is being educated in Dutch. Forgive my ignorance, @JeroenVannevel, what is most commonly spoken in Belgium?

Flemish, Dutch, French, and German.

Flemish being the most 'native' language?

@FreeMan Don't worry, I'm just pulling your leg. Flemish (an improved Dutch) is spoken by the Flemish part -- 6m people. Walloon (French dialect) is spoken in Wallonia -- 4m people

The Belgians are so divided, they cannot even agree on which language to speak

@Mat'sMug What did you do to Extract Method last night?

what about it?

It is telling me I have invalid selections left and right.
It wasn't when I went to bed last night.

most likely related to the Project equality not working.

Bother.
We were so close, and now we aren't.
I can't make heads or tails of RubberduckMenu isn't working after I change the settings.
It works fine when I unload/reload the addin.

#592 seems to be the most urgent thing to fix.

That line isn't even being hit in Extract method.

why does it deem the selection invalid?

> Adding [vba-grammar] label, as I've seen an in-statement implicit member call come up as something else, and this is most probably what's branching the identifier resolution code into an infinite loop that ends up overflowing the stack.

var presenter = _factory.Create();
if (presenter == null)

}

yes, and why is Create returning null?

Just about to post that myself.

            var declarations = userDeclarations.Where(item => types.Contains(item.DeclarationType)
                && item.QualifiedName.QualifiedModuleName == selection.QualifiedName).ToList();

            var declaration = declarations.SingleOrDefault(item =>
there.
QualifiedModuleName == selection.QualifiedName
^^ overrides Equals. look at the implementation
public override bool Equals(object obj)
{
    try
    {
        var other = (QualifiedModuleName)obj;
        return other.Component.Equals(Component) && other._contentHashCode == _contentHashCode;
    }
    catch (InvalidCastException)
    {
        return false;
    }
}

This looks awful suspicious:
item.QualifiedName.QualifiedModuleName == selection.QualifiedName

hmm looks like component reference equality is compromised too

6:54 PM
Shouldn't that be:
item.QualifiedName == selection.QualifiedName

selection.QualifiedName has a bad name, the type is QualifiedModuleName
and item.QualifiedName has a bad name, the type is QualifiedMemberName

Oh.
Very revealing.
