06:00 - 13:0013:00 - 22:00

06:21
hi hi hi
06:55
Morning
morning!
hows things?
07:42
sat in a relaxing airport lounge enjoying the sun shining in :-)
admittedly, I'm on conference calls, but it could be worse
mornin' all
@RoryAlsop where you off to? Nice day for a fly anyway..
Morning
08:00
@RоryMcCune Lahndahn
just until tomorrow. as @Tildal pointed out, it clashes with the highest aurora likelihood for some time - so I'll miss another one :-(
@RoryAlsop good whisky?
got 2 days solid work ahead - whisky is not really an option ...
yet
@RoryAlsop sounds like whisky is a necessity
Heh - for certain stakeholders I'm sure that would be fine...
oh well, if you're holding a steak, you should go with a nice wine
08:03
@RoryAlsop ahh london town. Weather is nicer here (cold+clear) it's a bit warm down south now..
was 2 degrees when I left the house. Iced car, as it was beautifully clear all night
@RоryMcCune ahhhh, I didnt get that he was saying "London" with an accent. Figured Lahanahdahn was some strange Scottish isle, whose main industry is of course whisky
@AviD nah it's lahndan innit mate
well NOW its clear
hahahahahaha
08:08
I don't like doing this, but I have to agree with @AviD on the Lahndahn thing.
@Arperum pssh, foreigners :op
@RоryMcCune Oi! If I start blabbering in some local dialect you wouldn't understand either.
@Arperum of course not :) well unless I'm in front of a computer then I can make sub-standard translations easily
@RоryMcCune Gah. Good luck with some of the dialects around here.
@Arperum well given the trouble the translators have with quite mainstream languages I shudder to think what they'd make of regional dialects...
08:16
@RоryMcCune cue the speaking elevator in Scotland
ELEVEN!
@AviD or indeed most sketches from Burnistoun/Chewin' the Fat
@RоryMcCune I remember when we moved when I was 8 or something, the new neighbour was talking about "nen auker". I had no clue what on earth he was blabbering about. We moved < 20km...
Ended up that he was trying to say something about a bucket (een emmer in Dutch).
Hell, speakers of one province get subtitled on tv in most cases, even if they try to speak a non-dialect dutch.
@Arperum yikes, Some scottish shows have been subtitled when they get shown in England (or abroad) but that's fairly rare..
08:31
to be fair, my audience for the Lahndahn comment was @RоryMcCune so I wasn't trying to be globally understandable :-)
@RoryAlsop I actually usually understand Brogue quite well (for a non-Scot anyway), but that one went over my head.
maybe I was just too focused on the possibility of a new kind of whisky...
08:49
mmmmm - new whisky
@RoryAlsop well, older whisky better
speaking of, how's your barrel doing? :-)
is that a euphemism
hahaha, no not in this case
one of the other topics

1 hour later…
10:20
@Adi You get anywhere with the .git stuff?
wut, there is a tag.
@AviD at least it's not too big.
well why not, I guess, since there is the all inclusive tag.
loooooooooooooooooool your tag usage sucks
sec.se also known as sci fi and fantasy
^_^
why would you have an information tag, that word is in the title of your site, it's assumed every question is about information in some way or another
10:38
@Flyk to drive people with Tag OCD up the wall?
Hehehe, CVE-2015-2247 "Unspecified vulnerability in Boosted Boards skateboards allows physically proximate attackers to modify skateboard movement, cause human injury, or cause physical damage via vectors related to an "injection attack" that blocks and hijacks a Bluetooth signal." (Emphasis mine)
@RоryMcCune this is much worse than tag ocd
it's formatting ocd and grammar ocd, correct use of links ocd, obsolete comment ocd
@Flyk yes exactly.
@Tinned_Tuna nice
@RоryMcCune shut.up.
10:49
@AviD :P
@Tinned_Tuna whoa, that one really IS about skateboards?? I thought that was like a metaphor.
or an allegory. a simile?

A: The great 2015 tag cleaning

AviDThere is an information tag. Just... just what. I don't even. A information tag. Information. As a tag. On Information Security.SE. Information. At least there is no data tag (anymore).

sorry guys, but I'm not taking part in your tag cleanup
@Flyk pleeeez
we need you to
you're not like us
you're normal
you can translate the world for us
nah, it's a lot of effort to work through all of your posts just to get edits rejected because somebody else doesn't understand that a cleanup process is going on
damn I need to stop watching bad TV shows.
@Flyk you dont get that its different here?
here you have "management" (well moderators) buy-in.
10:55
@AviD you forget that I've tried contributing my edits and flags here :p
talk to @ScottPack about the big cleanup of 2012.
why, it's not even like he and I even talk in general, why would I start a special conversation about way back when
@AviD: We had one a couple of months back on SU. Worked well, but its a pain to organise
@JourneymanGeek I briefly took part in that, but again, too much pushing water up hill
just idiots rejecting tag removals because they want to keep the tag the community has agreed to remove
fuck that shit
@Flyk but it'd relieve the boredom for a while :)
10:57
@RоryMcCune I'm currently editing/voting/flagging every single post on Movies & TV, starting from post 1
I have plenty of SE things to do, currently
@Flyk so leave those liberal arts losers and do the same on Sec.SE, hell a mod. just encouraged you :)
I'm not doing it on here
@JourneymanGeek well crap, just checked and there are still a pile of sites with the "best-practices" tag.
daaaamn, there is one on SF. WTF.
@Flyk" That's one of the implementation details I felt we should have done better.
@JourneymanGeek what, banning everybody else from the site so that the people who care can get shit done without the idle zombie rejectors getting in the way?
11:03
"idle zombie rejectors" -> band name!
naw, have people watch the queue and accept... (tho its better if we had more qualified editors)
@RоryMcCune unless @AviD is going to sit there and work through everything generated as a result of me clicking things it's ultimately going to be a waste of my time
@AviD yeah Idle Zombie Rejectors (Ft DJ Flyk)
I would rather spend time justifying every single thing I've clicked to M&TV's mods before they ultimately end up doing what I want in most instances than just getting stuff rejected
@Flyk ideally, most of the changes would be done at the tag level. most of the work is research - looking for bum tags, checking the q's, etc. actually editing q's is really just exception management.
@Flyk what, you can't stand rejection??
meh, probably not enough practice.
11:06
nope, super sensitive to rejection
always makes me feel like I did something really wrong
if I look at your site for "bum" tags, you'll end up with a huge list of stuff you don't really want to remove
@Simon can give you some pointers, he's practically an expert on it.
@Flyk well thats the point of that meta q, innit
it's fine, I'll leave your tag cleanup in your more than capable hands
I'm thinking of expanding that q into something like your movies post. explaining our folksonomy of tag categories.
@Flyk oh, yeah, my hands are quite capable.
just not often bored enough.
I'm not editing movies & TV out of boredom
I'm doing it because I care about the site
I don't really care about this one
okay, "free time" then.
@Flyk ooohhhh ouch!
11:08
it's in a field I have no experience in, full of technical jargon I don't understand
@AviD mmmh, it's not personal, I like the people here
just the subject is a bit over my head
@Flyk so it IS personal then
@AviD I think we're being spurned here
@RоryMcCune it's hard to tell, it seems that way but I dont feel any fire.
sigh
phone, I need to brb
heh
11:10
@AviD it's more a cold shoulder thing, so the opposite of fire
@RоryMcCune yeah but then she goes and likes the people
@AviD we've been spurned as she would spurn a rabid dog
thats practically a warm hug, considering the source.
@AviD dunno it's fairly cold. She's off helping out that other site and complaining about them here... it's like we've been "sitezoned"
@Tinned_Tuna More to come.
We live in an IoT world now!
11:12
no, it feels more like the wife that tags along to games night, even though she doesnt play, just because she likes hanging out with her husband and friends.
(could just as well be the husband, but I am talking about mine.)
@RоryMcCune hahaha
@RоryMcCune that's true... "you are so nice to me, but I really need to go ride Movies.SE's q's now... See ya tomorrow!"
@AviD that's the one
@TerryChia quite possibly. Hopefully developers will get wise to this sooner rather than later? Maybe there will be a nicely packaged, known-good, solution that developers will use? Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
@Tinned_Tuna Caught in a IoT landslide
Hey @avid just saw your answer on meta
hey @TerryChia any recommended guides on writing python modules for inclusion in PyPI?
11:16
no escape from APT reality
Well I read the answer, then saw it was you, then laughed
@M'vy heh
I also did a comments pass on the other answers.
Adi
Adi
@TerryChia Oh yeah, I forgot to update you guys. It worked quite well on Linux when configuring Git with SSH. Pulling and Fetching were failing like I wanted, and pushing was succeeding but the Git client was crashing right after the push was done.
gonna need some big chunk of free time to work through that pile.
@AviD yeah we'll probably have to go back to all the things one day
11:18
9 mins ago, by AviD
@M'vy what do you think of that? http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/21128958#21128958
Adi
Adi
It was pretty nice. I had always thought that w implies r.
unless you want to.
we should probably have set it up one tag (or set of related tags) per answer, so we can measure consensus.
@Tinned_Tuna yes, yes it is. What that is that?
@Tinned_Tuna oh wow. so sucky.
@AviD by "that q" you mean that meta question about tags?
11:21
@M'vy yes. the one you asked, that we were just discussing. ;-)
@AviD yeah sure.
@AviD I'm not sure what will the effect be on the world. Do we have to pour some @flyk in it?
@M'vy heh. effect would be (a) guiding the tag rehabilitation project and (b) future reference, when tag arguments pop up again.
@Tinned_Tuna Got a non-french article too by accident? Because I don't want to believe what I seem to be reading.
@Arperum I might be able to find one...
@Arperum its called "translation"...
11:26
@Arperum I think I saw one somewhere
@Arperum I can't spot anything on {BBC, Independant, The Guardian}'s front page...
@Arperum @ThomasPornin may be able to help out
@AviD It's called "be lazy and let others go through the hassle of translating." Also, I'm able to read it, sortoff, but mostly am unwilling to trust my own knowledge of that Language.
from what I can tell, only 30 people voted on it, and the French national assembly is in the range of 600 members...
@Arperum ohh you must be on firefox. The rest of us just have a single button to push in our modern browsers.
@Tinned_Tuna is that the French state spying law? I saw an article that the head of OVH said he would move the company out of france if it passed.
11:28
@RоryMcCune yup
I live <10 km from the language border. So I should be able to read it anyway.
@Tinned_Tuna yeah, then they talk about forcing people to vote for elections, when our own elected don't go to vote and do their f*** job
no instances on WikiNews either.
@AviD I've got one of their servers, so if it passes hopefully they move them all out cleanly..
I know a fair few folks with OVH boxes
11:31
@Tinned_Tuna they're very good value..
wrong one :P
:21129342 Thatnk you very much.
better :p
the other one was from 2013
@Arperum there is no news from yesterday in English I think. Not yet.
@M'vy Yea, either way, France is doing horrible things again.
@Arperum yeah......
11:34
> Surveillance staff will also be able to bug suspects’ flats with microphones and cameras and add “keyloggers” to their computers to track every keystroke.
What was that quote about security and liberty again?
@RоryMcCune What do you want to know?
@TerryChia just looking for a basic tutorial on creating / adding packages to the repo :)
@Adi That's because the git client isn't expecting this I suppose. :)
@RоryMcCune Hmm, lemme see if I can find that one I thought was quite good.
They want to force ISP to set up automatic detection of "suspicious" connections
11:36
@TerryChia ta :)
Good luck defining what is a "suspicious" connection.
@Flyk Look at you caring about something.
@RоryMcCune There we go, the official guide: packaging.python.org/en/latest/distributing.html
Hey, why am I a dick to you when I should have been one to @AviD?
@M'vy And to do tat they would need to undermine https. Because not a single properly "secret" thing is send over http.
11:37
Fine, fine. @AviD u smell s0n
@TerryChia nice, thanks
@Arperum Not sure. But of course they would want to.
@M'vy If I ever had the idea that I wanted to live in France, that idea has been properly killed off by now.
@RоryMcCune Feel free to ping with any questions. :)
@TerryChia will do. Hopefully will be easily enough done as I'm creating very basic packages..
11:40
@Arperum Yeah bc that's better elsewhere :P
@RоryMcCune This is probably simple enough to follow and covers most of the bases: github.com/Ayrx/python-aead/blob/master/setup.py
@M'vy Not saying that. Those other places have the advantage of not having to speak French though.
VIVE LA FRANCE
ALLEZ LES BLEU
@Arperum The article sates the minister said they wouldn't use Deep Packet Inspection.
@Arperum Ah ah ah
@Tinned_Tuna you know a few of the Fair Folk??
11:42
@M'vy As if. "Yea, we made a law to allow us to do bad things, but we're totally not going to do it.
@M'vy Hey, I live in Belgium, grew up with French lessons on school since I was 10 or something, I just don't like the language.
@Arperum unfortunately this idea is spreading to quite a few other countries.
@AviD Yup. And that's bad. It actually wouldn't surprise me if Belgium has a law like that in order/ in the works. They are doing a hell lot of fearmongering anyway.
@Arperum Don't shatter all my illusions at once :P
@M'vy I'm just being a tiny little bit realistic.
@M'vy ...?
@Simon sigh
11:55
@Flyk @Avid wants to turn the sec.se tag cleaning into a movie.tv.se tag cleaning :)
@M'vy that doesn't need me, just apply some common sense
and better English that I used, since I seem to word everything badly
@Flyk Yeah yeah. I was just joking :P
@M'vy well no, not really, but her post was quite comprehensive and well thought out (for the most part)
@AviD Oh man. I fucked that tag up hard.
3
@ScottPack yeah ya did. Twice.
Please do not create ridiculously extraneous and irrelevant tags. — AviD ♦ 18 secs ago
gaddamn it. Why do we bother trying to clean them up, when craptags are created faster than we can rid them.
12:14
Afternoon. London is hot. And full of people. Not fun
@RoryAlsop blech :(
FIND?? THERE IS A TAG CALLED FIND.
how do I remove tag creation privileges from users?
But I am smiling because @DroneShip is following me on Twitter
(I'm guessing it follows everyone who follows it, but it still felt good to get that notification)
@AviD - that's a good request for meta
@RoryAlsop reminds me I'm not sure what to do with my twitter
Lol - me neither @M'vy
12:16
@AviD "lol you are so bad at tags"
@RoryAlsop I wonder if I should spam random theories or wha
where should this go?

Q: Block An IP Address Scanner On Mac

CrizlyI'm working on an prototype that can spot network scanners, which is working and it spits out the IP address of the scanners, but I need to block them now. Is there any way to block an IP address from the terminal, it needs to be done automatically by the app so preferably some terminal command...

apple.se? linux.se (since its probably the same command)? Commandline.se, I'm sure that exists by now
nah, it would be bash.se
okay I need to step away from the tags for a while.
I am close to just deleting a whole bunch of users en masse.
:)
@AviD I'm sure they deserve it
so what do you want me to do
@M'vy well, tbh - if other people have created ridiculously over specific tags, and dozens of people use them, its not really their fault for following what they see as community standards, is it.
broken windows and all that.
12:22
are you fine dealing with obsolete comment flags?
@Flyk burn it. burn them all.
@Flyk meh.
do you care if my edits consist only of formatting changes if there is nothing else to change?
fine with it, but if it becomes a project I would say dont bother.
well a tag cleanup is a project
@Flyk depends how egregious.
12:23
@AviD I like how this word means both remarkably bad and remarkably good
@Flyk exactly. if you're going to invest t&e, better to spend it on the tags than obsolete comments.
T&A?
@Flyk ergg, that was t & E. Time and Effort.
I blame Freud.
right
one moment, flagging 200 things and editing 200 things
lol
12:25
it's worrying that you think I'm joking
@Flyk I'm soz, I'm soz.
@Flyk it's not that, he mean |o| it was him cheering you on
@AviD Whoa there, something happened in your childhood that made you type A instead of E?
@AviD Listen son, we gotta have a serious talk right now.

Q: What does this malicious PHP script do?

kenorbSomebody hacked my site and uploaded this script (template46.php) to my webroot and its content is: <?php $vIIJ30Y = Array('1'=>'F', '0'=>'j', '3'=>'s', '2'=>'l', '5'=>'M', '4'=>'0', '7'=>'W', '6'=>'L', '9'=>'Z', '8'=>'b', 'A'=>'i', 'C'=>'O', 'B'=>'G', 'E'=>'3', 'D'=>'6', 'G'=>'A', 'F'=>'8', 'I'=>...

Why hasn't my flag about this question been approved yet?
Why is it still open when it is an obvious case of "too localized"?
We have hundreds of questions like this one.
And worse: it's rep training for fucks sake.
Does anyone know when French ISPs etc. must comply with the new internet surveillance law? As in, is it that they can turn up and demand stuff right now, or is it that, within 6 months, they must have controls X, Y & Z?
@Tinned_Tuna It probably needs a decree to set that date
12:39
@M'vy ah fair enough. Woo, still up in the air
@Simon too long, havent read it yet
the q, not the flag
@AviD You just need to read the title.
@Simon so find a dupe and VTC it for crissake.
A typical case of "this script appeared on my web server"
@AviD I already flagged it you donut face.
@Simon I CANT CLOSE AS TOO LOCALIZED
give me something to work with
12:41
WE USED TO BE ABLE TO
WE USED TO
custom closure reason -> we don't care
@AviD Custom Closure Reason --> Doughnuts!
so go on then, get some close votes on it.
but yeah we should have canonical "what does this php or code do" to close as dupe of
and yes, I said "php OR code".
I can't vote, not enough rep
thats an exclusive or.
12:46
@Flyk do you get rep for tag cleanups?
@AviD not a topic defined by 'help center'.
you get rep for edits, up to 1000
just needs somebody to approve the edits
Which is basically the 'off-topic' reason of 'off-topic' ...
which doesn't appear to be happening
somebody remove the ads tag from this... I don't have the rep to retag and the post doesn't need any edits
@Flyk done

A: The great 2015 tag cleaning

SimonHere are a few tags that I question their need: ai and ads don't seem required at all. regexp most-likely should be called "regex" (edit: looks like this is debatable, didn't know both were used), but also seems to be a waste of space. Finally, I've been wondering this for a long time so I'm...

@AviD I'm not sure what you're trying to tell me
that its already on the list.
based on the fact my edits have been on AI and ADS so far, it's obvious that's the post I'm working from
@Flyk oh duh, didnt realize. Good on you then. Derp.
why don't you go and delete those questions I just flagged?
that's a good idea
and also confirm that you're fine with me flagging non-duplicates that are old and still exist
