@RubberDuck In an ideal world we'd have an adapter interface to wrap the VBE & ANTLR stuff. Then we could isolate them... but it would be so much work, only for the benefit of... adding more work in writing unit tests. '~'
00:51
Thinking again, ....it shouldn't be too hard to makean adapter for the VBE object model... I'll try something.
The problem is we don't just rely on the VBE itself. It's all of the thing's it exposes. Then you don't just have to mock the VBE, But the projects collection and a project and a component, ad naseum.
We can do better about just injecting what we actually need I think.
But then we have to be disciplined about not walking up and down the object chain.
Tests aren't the end all be all, but they make me feel better when I change something.
@RubberDuck Yes, but then the purpose of an adapter is to shape objects into something else that's more practical for our needs; IVBEAdapter, IVBProjectAdapter, and IVBComponentAdapter should be all we need, assuming we consider a component and its codepane as being the same thing.
IDK, maybe it's just an abstraction layer we don't really need.
01:09
It's an abstraction later we don't need and wouldn't really benefit from.
We would just end up casting from M$'s interface to ours all the time.
I think I just need to bite the bullet and do what I can where I can, but also stop stressing about it.
lol but it's good that it worries you ;)
Still I'll see what I can do. I don't think we'd be casting at all if it's well done.
There's just so much functionality built and on the roadmap. I want to make sure it's maintainable. I plan on working on RD for the foreseeable future.
01:31
I should be tweaking the installer or refactoring right now...
(pouring coffee)
With the VBE object model tucked behind an interface, we can get rid of a bunch of extension methods and build lots of functionality in these adapters. And then we can write a test that validates that SetSelection is called with the expexted parameters when a tree node is doubleclicked, for example.

> We're adding the Ru&bberduck menu before the &Window menu: public void Initialize() { var menuBarControls = IDE.CommandBars[1].Controls; var beforeIndex = FindMenuInsertionIndex(menuBarControls, "&Window"); var menu = menuBarControls.Add(MsoControlType.msoControlPopup, Before: beforeIndex, Temporary: true) as CommandBarPopup; Debug.Assert(menu != null, "menu != null"); menu.Caption = "Ru&bberduck"; This means we're not inserting our menu where we think we are, in non-English...
environments, where the &Window menu can be called something else. Let's refer to commandbar controls by their ID instead of by their caption.

don't get excited, none of it is implemented - it's just a GUI :)

LOL! A HashSetener is what you get when you have a listener and then want to replace all List<T> with a HashSet<T> with find/replace-all ;) — Mat's Mug 19 secs ago

lol. Yeah... HashSetener... My bad... — RubberDuck 9 mins ago

> Is the window menu really the only one we're searching for? That's a bit surprising to me.
@Duga For now, yes - only to determine the insertion point for our Rubberduck menu!
Other than that we may eventually need to use ID's for the "break" and "reset" (pause/stop) buttons when we manage to make unit tests run asynchronously and make them abortable.

Morning all

@Chrismas007 Monking. How are ya?
Hi!
@RubberDuck are we is the world ready for 1.2?
@Mat'sMug The world is. I need to get the installer done.
So, let's do any new work in a branch until I can do that.
Let's launch today then! :)
@Mat'sMug lol.... I want to. We'll see. Changing the installer isn't ever exactly fun.
It's also my wife's late night, so it's just me with the kids.
how so? it should be as simple as "rebuild", no?
15:36
I'll see what I can do.
eh, kids first mate
No. I need to include the pre-release version as part of the upgrade path, and enforce the minimum system requirements.
damn, with the old "Setup project" in VS2010, doing that was pretty simple.
I have no idea how our installer is built '~'
LOL. Once I learn WiX, it'll be in the repo.
Honestly though, I'm not sure why putting it in the repo broke things to begin with.
It's just an xml file really.
> Today: +42
amen
@ticker dumb, dumb, DUMB!!!!
16:04
@Mat'sMug VTC
@Chrismas007 the @ticker wasn't meant for that one, but yeah

WTH?
working hard here?
cough yeah

A: VBA stop execution of current iteration of loop

Mat's MugYou'll usually want to skip an iteration when a given condition is met - you have 2 options in VBA: Wrap the loop body in an If block: For i = 1 to 100 If SomeCondition Then ' interesting iterations End If Next Use GoTo to skip an iteration (and reduce nest...

@skiwi unfortunately
Working a bit on my LinkedIn network here... @Mat'sMug I think I sent you a connect
16:13
oh that was you! lol I'll accept it soon
(why aren't you @Skiwi on LinkedIn?!)

@Mat'sMug Sorry to disappoint, but my real name is not Skiwi :)
@RubberDuck There's too many of you with the same name ^^
Speaking of disappointing people, I'm not really a Duck.

If you are even on there, it is
16:15
I'm... not really a mug...
how much has LinkedIn professionally helped you guys? I don't know yet what the real value is, but I figured that I'd try anyway
not really. but it helped keep an eye on some cuties from former jobs ;)

@skiwi I got recruited by a CEO and got a Director position solely based on my LinkedIn profile.

Yep, taht's you there @RubberDuck!
16:18
I should add this on my linked in.....

me too
@Chrismas007 really?
@skiwi Yes my current job
that's quite cool then :)

cool
new reference language for VBEX en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
No inheritance, but lots of interfaces. Just like VBA
@skiwi LinkedIn has only ever gotten me JAVA recruiters. GitHub has done more for me.
@cheezsteak It uses duck typing though. Boy that would be a nice feature to have in VBA wouldn't it?
<lunch>
VBA has variants
Go allows for Interface composition...
Can't do that.
How does that even work?
@RubberDuck Variant is another name for Duck
VBA has varying degrees of Ducks
16:34
Implements IInterface1
Implements IInterface2
But you can't have an interface implementing an interface.
I tried that.
truth. painful truth.
So if I can't require that all objects implementing Numerical must also implement Ordered

truth. painful truth.
;)
@cheezsteak Good thing I'm on both then
17:14
@ticker huh?
17:36
@Mat'sMug Not quite the kind of duck typing I'm talking about. I'm thinking of the way Ruby (and apparently Go) will consider a class to implement an interface so long as it fullfills the contract.
ah, right
@cheezsteak I would guess it's some bit of compiler/reflection magic.
You do realize that plain replacing Chr(34) with a " will result in non-compilable code, right? You'll have to escape it, and enclose it between double quotes, so you actually want to replace Chr(34) with """"... but only where it's being concatenated into a string. Doesn't look like a job for an automated script. — Mat's Mug 2 mins ago
@George I've seen nesting that doesn't break code, but wrecks one's brain ;) — Mat's Mug 7 secs ago
Doing this will not make the code more readable. Abort abort. If you plan on doing anything, I would replace Chr(34) with a quote "constant" . (It has to be a variable though because Chr() is a function, not a constant.) — RubberDuck 15 secs ago
One good tool to find out how to automate stuff with VBA, is the macro recorder - click "record", then format your table margins, click "stop" and look at the generated code - grab the interesting part, parameterize it and plug it into your code. — Mat's Mug 6 secs ago

Q: Excel VBA - Formatting script for automation

SicatronSo here's what I'm trying to do: Open file: Pc_Profile Create new sheet: Sheet1 Copy desired cells from Pc_Profile to Sheet1 (see script below) Copy entire Sheet1 to new excel file: db.xls Rename sheet to content of cell A5 Create new sheet for next script run Basically I'm trying to automate...

@Mat'sMug Oh duh. My bad man.
This is a good question.

Q: How to overload functions from the VBA standard library like IsEmpty()?

sigilI want to make a local version of IsEmpty() in a class like this: Public Dict As Dictionary Public Function isEmpty(columnName As Variant) As Boolean isEmpty = IsEmpty(Dict(columnName)) End Function This is for information hiding, so that I can call classInstance.isEmpty("someField") inste...

@RubberDuck and a nice answer!
Thanks!, but not why I posted.
Holy crap! 6 UV in 14 minutes.
SO gone wild!
That makes me feel better about this crap day.
hmm that WP phone post isn't showing up on rubberduck-vba.com's news section...
@Mat'sMug is it looking for a particular tag or category?
I often forget to set a category when posting to WP from the mobile.

A peek at v1.3: VBE+GitHub https://i.sstatic.net/BQFeb.png https://wordpress.com/post/86116679/18/
ah, it's there. looks like it's @CaptainObvious updating the feed...
So when will you drop the IDE in which you are building the plugin, and writ eyour own IDE?
you mean drop VSC2013? You out of your mind? ;)
I think he means when are we going to completely replace the VBE with our own.
19:16
@RubberDuck That, yes
Why would I do something that crazy?
Oh... nevermind.....
@Mat'sMug! 4.6 supports Vista! We will be able to upgrade to C# 6! microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44928
