12:00 AM
we still have 2008 or older era workstations in production

This is from 2002
This is from 2012
It turns out SYSmark has always been biased towards Intel
No wonder AMD is so weak today. Intel has been playing dirty all along.
AMD was getting crippled during the Athlon XP days and now lacks the resources to develop a decent x86 processor.

intel has been playing dirty in other ways ;p
oops
whoa...

If Intel didn't run this "destroy AMD" campaign nearly 15 years ago, we'd probably see far more and better hardware from AMD today.

I tend to disagree

I was a bit skeptical about AMD's claims about SYSmark being biased when I first read them. Further research confirmed these claims.
My personal laptop has an Intel processor, the first Intel machine in more than a decade, and now I might have to reconsider.

12:08 AM
If you want to get a worse processor, go ahead.

Yes, Intel's processors may be better overall, but it's my hope that AMD can catch up and recover from this unfair play that nearly destroyed them.

Don't forget, that had nothing to do with process improvements (AMD did try to set up their own fabs, and messed that up business wise) and intel's own post PIV architecture improvements.

Clock for clock, the Athlon XP processor was vastly superior to the Pentium 4.
AMD had a serious chance to bridge the sales gap with Intel, but was prevented from doing so.
Intel had manipulated an industry-standard benchmark to discredit AMD.
Intel wrote its compiler to seriously disadvantage AMD.
Intel pushed for maximum clock rate, not real performance.
Intel used coercive tactics to compel computer manufacturers to select them over AMD.
In the absence of this foul play, AMD would be much stronger today.
I know much of this is no longer current, and Intel no longer plays dirty to this extent, the impact of Intel's foul play lingers to this day.

12:31 AM
actually, they still do ;p
(hell, that's probably one of the reasons the x86 netbook made a comeback, and x86 phones are so damned cheap)
as a consumer, and an enthusiast tho, I'd rather get gear on the basis of what works for me.

12:44 AM
blah, java

1:28 AM
So. I have a webcam in my room that's supposed to be connectable over the cloud.app isn't working, so.... I remote into my laptop to check on him :p

1 hour later…
Bob
2:42 AM
@DragonLord Keep in mind that they have more knowledge of how to optimise for their architecture. What's optimal for an Intel proc is not necessarily optimal for an AMD proc. It's really up to them if their niche HPC compiler makes these optimisations that provide a minor performance boost on an Intel proc (and even a minor boost really matters in HPC) but ends up being a penalty on an AMD proc.
Heck, if it's optimised for a specific architecture I would not be surprised to see it doing worse on other Intel architectures.

Bob
3:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek Both the BEBs and Pistons arrived today.
Trying the Pistons now.
That chocolate smell :)
They sound great

0_0
Chocolate... smell?
nice ;p
Also, we can't blame Intel for architectural misteps

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Smell from the cable - the gold/brown ones have a chocolate smell :D

Ahh 0_0

Bob
3:16 AM
Hm. Was abit annoying to get the tiny QR to scan, but passed the genuine test :P
Apparently fakes don't have the chocolate smell anyway.

I was thinking of getting the silvers ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Got a pair of 'em too
Not as much of a smell...
is that... vanilla?

Bob
Nah, just my imagination :P
@JourneymanGeek Also picked up one of the Paperback ones... it sounds decent :P
The fit isn't quite as good as the normal one, but it's good enough to use, and the sound quality is obviously miles ahead of random $2 cheapies.
@JourneymanGeek I've apparently forgotten how to wear normal earbuds O_O
Either that or the BEBs are particularly massive

lol
paperback?
the BEBs look massive

Bob
3:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek They are!
Doesn't help that I apparently have tiny ears.
Paperback is basically the small/cheap version.

ahh
eh, I can't get most earbuds to fit ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Same :P
I'm lucky my old Samsung ones fit. But it's something like $40 for a new pair, and they don't even sound as good as the $20 Pistons

(I have a small pile of headphones from various android devices... HTC, Samsung and Moto ><)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm a bit annoyed with the mic on the Pistons, though
For some reason, it's at the point where the left and right lines merge.
So it sits under my chin rather than next to my mouth.

3:46 AM
cheaper to produce? Good for left and right handers?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't think mic side really matters too much for different dominant hands.
The BEBs are on the left.
Almost all others are on the right.
In the middle is just awkward.

Bob
3:59 AM
O_O
I... I just tried to clear the Spotify cache on my phone. My phone... restarted?
wtf?

4:10 AM
I suppose.
Not sure how important it is, I'm vaguely amphidextrous, and actually use my non natural dominant hand as my dominant hand.
(I'm a lefty, but I got forced to use my right in school)

Bob
4:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek I use whichever hand is free for on-cord audio controls.
Right-handed writing though.
"How do percentages work?" --Spotify

4:51 AM
clearly they had the same guy who coded MS's progress time counter
orrrr
its by size not count

Bob
5:08 AM
@allquixotic Spotify's latest version on Android seems to have this very annoying bug.
For some downloaded tracks, it won't advance to the next one automatically.

hm, for some wierd reason, the phone app for our IP camera works but won't tilt and pan the camera, and the webapp fails.
Also, the dog's barking at the room door ..
poor thing

Bob
Good thing I backed up the previous version...

and blah. I want to go home to check on him
but that'll be tight
and he'll expect it every day ><

Bob
o.o
Oh, wait, you're at work

yeah
Parents are away for 20 days, and dog is home alone.
(Parents got too used to me being at home to keep an eye on things. This was badly planned)

5:22 AM

6:04 AM
and... he's barking. A lot.
Possibly at the camera

1 hour later…
7:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek @Psycogeek Your thoughts?

7:49 AM
Donno, I'm not a photographer ;p

I need to watch that when I get home.
Or on the train ;p
(also... I still find the titles on the oneboxes wierd)

I just realised something funny. My crappy little netbook has the power of a fully operational battlestation more power than my SGI octane workstation....
Granted the old warhorse is probably over a decade old easily

lol

It was obsolete when I got it, 6 years ago. The model's from '97 I think
eh. closer to 20 0_0

Feb 11 at 13:21, by Bob
@allquixotic The MH370 ACI episode will air in three days.
:P
I never did get around to watching it though.
@allquixotic easily portable XD
Wait, is it that girl who did the whole lot of translated songs? We posted a bunch of em here?
"Pulled my trigger, now he's dead" => "My cat died"
O_O

@Bob yup
@Bob Google Translate wants you to buy a smartphone

Bob
I'll be watching the ACI episode in ~4 hours.
Unfortunately, it's probably not going to have any interesting new info

8:54 AM
just a good coverage of all the existing stuff yeah

Bob
@allquixotic Cache hit now 75% and 85% :D
Wonder if I can break the 90% barrier?

5 hours later…
Bob
2:02 PM
@allquixotic Rather dark ACI :(

2:13 PM
hmm
Apparently the stream uses the same MMC as the surface 2

Do you know if there is a difference when it comes to use incandescent ultra violet lamp versus fluorescent ultra violet lamp when it comes to curing cold?

0_0
That's probably the biggest heatsink I have ever seen

SSD ?
And I can't spot where it is or the RAM

Bob
@JourneymanGeek What's the CPU?

I think both are soldered on
@Bob: I THINK its the little chip not covered by tissue
(I didn't open mine up!)

Bob
2:24 PM
> dts studio sound
better than beats
@JourneymanGeek I mean, which cpu does it have?

OH
N2840

Bob
the actual chip would be on the underside if it's anything like other HP laptops

Which may explain the massive heatsink
(and no vents ;p)
Interestingly the 2840 is more powerful than the processor on my brix
(and the 2807 is more power efficient. The trade off being the system the 2807 is in has twice the ram, and a 1tb hdd ;p)

Bob
I need a new screenshot tool :(
SnagIt is nice, but I can't justify buying it for the 5 machines I currently use (one licence allows two machines)

._.
What's wrong with the default one?

Bob
2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek Default one?
Snipping Tool is too inconvenient.
Greenshot is buggy.

ya, snipping tool ;p
I use that and licecap everywhere

Bob
That's the SanDisk SEM64G eMMC in this tablet.
For my future chat searches: CrystalDiskMark screenshot above of Lenovo Miix

Samsung MCG8GA eMMC...
Hm, oneboxing cuts off long messages.
@JourneymanGeek So, yea, yours has higher sequential and probably random though your test didn't cover random.

running crystal disk mark now ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Can you pull the model number?

I thought I posted that 0_0
ahh no
MBG4GC

Bob
2:48 PM
Oh, Samsung too

Bob
Wait, 32 GB?
I wonder if the MCG8GA is just the bigger variant

Bob
Hm, no, apparently there's a MBG4GA

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 x64 (C) 2007-2013 hiyohiyo

          Sequential Write : 54.422 MB/s
         Random Read 512KB : 158.033 MB/s
        Random Write 512KB : 46.095 MB/s

Bob
2:50 PM
Yea, yours is probably a newer or higher-power variant.
Mine is actually slower than a HDD for sequential :S

As I think I mentioned yesterday, the main drive in the stream is worse than a real SSD but holds up ok compared to spinning rust ;p
hmm
If my SD card reader is USB2, no point getting a fast SD card, right?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wrong.
Class10 only guarantees 10 MB/s minimum read and write

(Thinking of using the SD card slot for extra, permanent storage)
ah

Bob
A faster (usually UHS-I) card can easily exceed 30 MB/s
OTOH, the card reader itself might not support UHS-I, so it'll fall back to Class 10.

I'm hitting about 20 with a generic/regular sandisk.

Bob
2:54 PM
You'll have to try it to find out.

Well, I want space/low cost over speed ;p

Bob
I did a whole bunch of tests with the Samsung UHS-I EVO MicroSDs last year.
My phone (which doesn't do UHS-I, grr) only hits about 16

Bob
My laptop goes 30-40
The cards are rated 45 IIRC
48
So MBG4G is 32 GB
MCG8G is 64GB
The current generation is E
Yours is gen C
Mine is gen A

so older but not quite as old?

Bob
2:58 PM
Makes sense since it's a Clover Trail (the VivoTab) :P

XD
I believe this one's bay trail

Bob
The SanDisk used by Lenovo just sucks, but I don't expect anything but utter bullcrap to come out of Lenovo anyway.

lol
<--- ex thinkpad fanboy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Actually, the current gen might be C... I dunno

I THINK EMMC 5.0 just came out
like literally.

Bob
3:00 PM
I don't understand Samsung's versioning :P

I'll likely write a review for this over the weekend

Bob
Hm.
I should do that for my devices :P
I talk about them a lot here, but never actually write anything proper.

Bob
And it'd be something to actually get me off my arse and get started on my blog.

I'm pretty high up in google for the FA003 Ti ;p

Bob
3:02 PM
Which currently has all of one post, that basically says "YAY IT WORKS"
@JourneymanGeek We figured :P
I should upgrade Ghost first... it's advanced a lot

(Still no idea why)

Bob
Maybe set up a Discourse instance
But I should also set up backups for my dedi...
And set up email on it...
Urk.
Every time I think about starting, there's this whole list of things to do -_-

lol
Last vacation....
I mean long weekend
I had a list of things to do
did none of them. Did stuff I had been procrastinating on instead ;p

Bob
3:16 PM
o.O That's a 30 MB GIF... yea, let's keep it as a gifv link :P

4:19 PM
what is a gifv? just a gif?

Bob
@allquixotic just imgur's name for mp4/webm: m.imgur.com/blog/2014/10/09/introducing-gifv
Presumably either h.264 or vp8
Spotify on Android is really stuffing up recently :(
First the issues with playing offline files, now it's hung some background or system component
And the OS crash/restart while deleting the cache

4:38 PM
interesting
@JourneymanGeek So you have two dogs in your house? You, and "your dog"?

Good morning, I'm looking for an employee timeclock for a contact, it needs to work for about 10 emploloyees and have an ethernet connection, can anyone point me towards a good timeclock review site so that I can find out what's good? Most of the sites I've found so far look like shills, Thanks

@Psycogeek When designing in Photoshop and transferring partly completed work to another editing program to add effects and then again in another to add text etc. do you know how to ensure that image does not degrade in quality in this process?

5:02 PM
@Bob Someone's been to reddit today

5:17 PM
@David like a physical clock...?
