12:47 AM
really annoying
wish that light on the floor was brighter towards the wall instead of darker

1 hour later…
2:02 AM
auuugh you can't do a text serialization of .umap files can you
7mb is way too much to try and put on git as a binary

@IcyDefiance il y a un IcyDefiance dans la maison?

"Is there an IcyDefiance in the house?"
in probably poor french
we playin lol?

2:21 AM
sure but I need to finish this first so Mick can start working on the gdse project
play a game without me and if you're still here afterward I'll probably be done

i'll play a game of hots
ping me here at gdse
I just like this very weird brand of absurd internet humor

Just a heads up that a question showed up on meta.Programmers.SE that I'm suggesting to send over your way (as in "ask in chat") - any regulars here may wish to comment on it and correct me (please do) about the scope of chat here and GameDev itself.

user55340

A: If I am a recreational programmer who wants to add to my game, is asking on programmers SE ok?

MichaelTProbably not. Game design isn't something that is the realm of the conceptual or architectural software design. Questions about MVC, or organization of the code may be on topic here, but the game elements themselves would likely be off topic. You may wish to look into GameDev.SE and asking in ...

Pip
3:21 AM
@MichaelT Nope, that's perfectly valid here.

user55340
@Pip Thank you. Just making sure... on Programmers.SE we're a bit sensitive from SO people sending people to P.SE without being aware of the scope of the site and its culture... I hate doing that to other sites.

Pip
No problem :D

@MichaelT I have to disagree with pip. That would fall under opinion-based questions and get flagged pretty fast.
> Questions about "how to get started," "what to learn next," or "which technology to use" are discussion-oriented questions which involve answers that are either based on opinion, or which are all equally valid. Those kinds of questions are outside the scope of this site. Visit our help center for more information.
I don't think any SE site exists to invent things for people.

user55340
@IcyDefiance Please comment on my answer to point that out... though that said, what about this chat room?

user55340
@IcyDefiance That strange place called "World Building"?

3:29 AM
asking in chat would be great. no guarantee he'll get an answer he likes, but there's no rule against it.

World Building just... I don't know. It is an abomination against all that is SE.
It's like "I'm the next Frank Herbert. But I don't want to do my own research."

somehow my eyes skimmed over (as in "ask in chat") and I didn't read it, lol

user55340
I'm frequently active in the Programmers.SE chat room (less so now with a job that would frown on it from my work machine...) and know that chat rooms are often a bit more free wheeling than the main sites... allowing topics that don't quite fit there.

Jon
this room is mainly professional

user55340
But again, I'm not active here so wouldn't want to send people here without a cautionary "I'm not active here... tread with caution" I mean... I might be sending them to the Bridge or the Lounge.

user55340
3:33 AM
P.SE's chat is also mainly professional... though we can get sidetracked easily when its after work hours.

Joe
I think its a reasonable suggestion depends on how that particular op presents himself

user55340

user55340
(doesn't show tags for the rooms? meh)

user55340
> General Discussion for programmers.stackexchange.com Pants optional when telecommuting.

Joe
this is a helpful bunch indeed... but I've seen a few leeches not well received in the past year

user55340
3:34 AM
> good-booze horror-stories monads my-code-is-compiling parsing-errors the-other-monitor

@Joe they deserved not to be well received

Joe
I dont disagree at all, I can think of at least one who got 5 or 6 more second chances than he deserved

:)

Joe
does this make sense... Player object -> WeaponManager.cs Component with an array of Weapon Objects Inheriting from IWeapon Interface
I feel like I can do better

3:54 AM
I'm thinking about it
and something seems wrong
I feel like what you want is a WeaponManager that gives you an instance of a weapon component to attach to your player object @joe
i wouldn't attach the manager to them

Joe
hmm

suppose there are two players... you want two managers?

Joe
good point
my code architecture skills are weak
just trying to peice together the puzzle in my head before im down the rabbit hole too deep

takes a while to get used to
yeah

Joe
so the weapon manager is a static?

3:57 AM
static, singleton, or just managed so there's only one somehow, whichever way you prefer to do that

Joe
ok now in my head theres a weapon interface... contracting left click and right click methods
or however im going to name them.. attack one and attack two
ok I think Im finding the peice that feels wrong
Instance of Weapon, Implements IWeaponClass... Weapon instance contains generic properties that shouldnt be carried down into the Interface (Damage, AudioSource)
IWeaponClass could be ...? Melee? Projectile? Rocket? with the different functionality
sorry im rubberduckdebugging.com right now, apparantly

4:18 AM
damn it I hate monogame now. anyone want to make a clone of them to fix their bugs? maybe call it "duogame" or something.

4:39 AM
@Almo sorry that project took a lot longer than I expected, and now I have other things to do.
I won't be playing league tonight at all, probably

4:58 AM
@IcyDefiance hey no problem :)
we'll have time later

So my email has gotten 40 new emails just from git in the pst day.

5:39 AM
@Mutch95 lol yeah you miiiight want to disable that. I probably have to clean up my email too.

probably should haha will do that right away

5:53 AM
@IcyDefiance So we already have a website up lol?

kind of. just a placeholder thing that hobo put up.
probably won't put anything except a logo there until we're quite a bit farther in development

still awesome how he buys a domain and host
Thinking really far ahead, but what happens if the games a hit?

domain is like $9 for a year, and he probably already had a host

oh ok.

1 hour later…
Joe
7:23 AM
@Almo josephjaniga.com/puzzle now with a rocket launcher... feels weird something is not right
hmm the sounds went away...

oh yay your code is formatted correctly now
@Joe well your collision detection doesn't seem to work properly I just launched myself into a wall :p
And I got through to the other side :p
Really stress testing you voxel gen here Joe :p
I'll get a video
Sorry Joe I keep breaking your games :p

1 hour later…
user92578
9:09 AM
one memory leak left

user92578
it seems to be in a 3rd party library tough

user92578
gonna be hard I guess

user92578
Anyone around?

9:27 AM
me
but I'm probably useless :D

user92578
10:18 AM
first of all the call stack of the leak is weird

Dammit I think I messed up finder...
Rest of mac is fine
finder is using 100% of CPU!?

user92578
errno_t err = fopen_s(&fp, filename, "rb" ); this line is supposed to be the leak

wtf >.<

user92578
that's intensive :D

c#?

user92578
10:25 AM
C++

I opened up a file with about 60 GB of photos...
that's messed up...

user92578
wow

Sorry haven't worked with c++ before :/
now it's down to 8.2 because I force quite lol

user92578
well it's just one leak... but my OCD does not like the lonely leak in the detector

user92578
im kinda perfectionist

10:29 AM
Me too but I'm perfectionist with art or ideas not so much code :p
I probably should be though
Oh god look at this

user92578
needs more fries

user92578
I think I'll just drop this bug for now

Me and my girlfriend had an EPIC BURGER CHALLENGE one day, this was the result. The idea was to make the most heart attack intensive burger ever lol.

user92578
I'll probably investigate it more when a C++er is around

user92578
looks really nice tough

10:32 AM
yeah sorry about that

user92578
very heart attacky

user92578
@Mutch95 no need to apologize

haha, I'm pretty sure I was the winner ;) I mean I use so much meat and cheese haha!
oh god. I need to open that folder again but it's going to lag finder...
What are you working on Tyyppi?

user92578
well the weekend's project is improving my personal game framework

user92578
but I'm doing a 2d platformer shooter action game thingy

user92578
10:35 AM
a bit similar to broforce

Oh yes that's right
arn't you doing a custom game engine or something?

user92578
well I have a really nice framework built on top of SDL2

user92578
so kinda yeah

user92578

user92578
looks like this currently

user92578
10:36 AM
needs more player art tough :D

I swear I saw a player asset at one stage :p
But it looks really good!
don't think I've gotten that far with a project yet ;p

user92578
@Mutch95 yeah.... but I didn't like that :D

hahaha

user92578
well I have a really good engine for doing a game like this

user92578
I actually did a prototype of the game already

user92578
10:38 AM
it was really bad and I spent way too much time on it, but I ended up with a really nice codebase

Yeah you've been working on this for a month or two now haven't you

user92578
I started last summer

user92578
on the prototype

user92578
but on this iteration like a month

Can't wait for a playable prototype :D
Could be some great fun!

user92578
10:41 AM
I hope so!

user92578
also I hope that i figure out something that makes it different from broforce

I mean for the amount of effort you seem to of put into it, it should be
Yes we were discussing that a couple days ago weren't we

user92578
yeah we were

user92578
VS keeps on chrashing :(

:/
A building mechanic where you can barricade buildings and fend from zombies ;)
but I want crazy zombies
not slow arms-raised zombies

user92578
10:43 AM
:D

I want zombies with jetpack, rocket launchers
No riding sheep!

user92578
im just not sure if that's what "GunHero" is about

user92578
maybe I should surf around steam and see what is out there

well
Guns to fend from zombies
and hero who fends from zombies :p

user92578
could be fun

10:45 AM
sounds fun if it was crazy with explosions and difficulty
and you could add a silly little story line to it

user92578
thanks a lot for the ideas

for more humour

user92578
I'll go play some GRP now

no worries
GRP?

user92578
ghost recon phantoms

user92578
10:47 AM
3rd person shooter

ah okay cya!

user92578
cya :)

sup
mornin all

ello

Sup

10:57 AM
this GDSE project is getting a lot of chat I see ... I still don't get it though
requirements are extremely patchy lol
bit like most my projects

I can't even install Xamarin...
Fails to install

@Wardy it'll be interesting to watch play out
@Mutch95 what's going wrong?

Just say's it can't install.

yeh I was thinking that omg

lol.
The log doesn't say much...

11:00 AM
At the moment I'm trying to decide if I consider 0 a natural number
I'm inclined to say yes

user image

See..

ahhahaha
open the log

I did.
Would you like to view the last few lines

not very informative on the issue is it...

is there an app in your applications folder?

Their's quite a few

11:08 AM
well is Xamarin there

No

I'd just try again tbh

I've tried more than once tbh
It just doesn't work :p
I don't think it supports Yosmite
Lol...
Use to think I could do digital art
I was wrong wtf is that thing xD

11:23 AM
how the hell am i getting a lower value when I add a positive number to a negative one
var result = -5 + 5;
then I get some stupid value like -10
wtf

uh that's 0

exactly

c#?

but not according to unity it aint

Nope
void Start () {
var sum = -5 + 5;
print("The Sum Of -5 + 5 Is: " + sum);
}
returns 0
not -10
what have you done :p

11:27 AM
maybe in some messed up way I got the operator math wrong
for (int x = 0; x < Size; x += ChunkSize.X)
    for (int y = 0; y < Size; y += ChunkSize.Y)
        for (int z = 0; z < Size; z += ChunkSize.Z)
        {
            var start = new IntVector3(x, y, z) - half;
            var end = (new IntVector3(start) + ChunkSize + 1) - half;
            chunksLeft.Add(VoxelGen.GenerateChunkAsync(start, end));
        }

most likely lol

The idea behind this is to determine a load of chunks that center around 0,0,0

what should be what exactly?

so x,y,z will start at 0,0,0 and iteration in chunk size increments up to the volume size
start = the start of a chunk
end the end of a chunk
half is half the size of the volume I'm generating
when I add values to IntVectors I can add intvectors to each other and integer values ot them
public static IntVector3 operator +(IntVector3 first, IntVector3 second)
{
    return new IntVector3(first.X + second.X, first.Y + second.Y, first.Z + second.Z);
}

public static IntVector3 operator +(IntVector3 value, int amount)
{
    return new IntVector3(value.X + amount, value.Y + amount, value.Z + amount);
}
what have i done wrong here ?

What's this?
operator +(

11:31 AM
end is coming out lower than start ...
do you not know about operator ovverides @Mutch95 ?

nope

ok so IntVectors are my way of saying "3d pos within an array"
so in my IntVector3 class I override +
so i can do stuff like ...
var result = intvector1 + intVector2;

so why is is operator +?

by overiding the operator I define the behaviour when I perform a + operation between 2 IntVector3 object instances

so when you use + in that method it runs how you've set the operator up?

11:34 AM
yeh basically

That might be the first place to look?

thats the issue ... looking at it I don't get how these values can be wrong

trying running var sum = -5 + 5;
print("The Sum Of -5 + 5 Is: " + sum);
in it?
that'll let you know if it really is the + operator or if it's the vector's in the wrong placement maybe
Results?

DOH!!!
total dumbass (i am)
    var start = new IntVector3(x, y, z) - half;
    var end = (new IntVector3(start) + ChunkSize + 1) - half;

You can't blame Unity for everything :P

11:42 AM
can you see it ?
end should be start + the size of a chunk + 1 on each dimension

Not entirely sure it's your code :p

I am now I can see it

knew it wasn't math :D
Math is always right >.> Unfortunately..

var start = new IntVector3(x, y, z) - half;
var end = (new IntVector3(start) + ChunkSize + 1);
see what I did ?
DOH! ... i feel so dumb now

yeah you took half haha
oh well
I'm like 10 times worse...

12:08 PM
hmmm my conversion code is wrong

12:24 PM
@MickLH I don't understand this :( ... help!
I think I need to get my head round this stuff a bit better :(

12:40 PM
System out of memory pft...

@Mutch95 i get that a lot
allocate smaller chunks over time

no I was exporting
it lied!

lol

Well just A litlle

1:13 PM
@pip @AttackingHobo @IcyDefiance Daft question guys but maybe one of you can explain something about this GDSE project ...

it seems to be rapidly progressing an I know hardly anything about it ;p

There were a load of strawpolls done to determine the engine during which Unity consisently won. Following that there has been a ton of problems trying to get a monodev solution to work on various platforms.
What the hell is the decision making process here and I question weather its working or not ?

Lol no clue
I just try to do what I'm told

@Mutch95 im in the same boat ... im just following a ton of random discussion but none of it makes sense to me

Pip
Switch to the other room :D

1:15 PM
there's another room ?

Tbh I dont understand the whole idea yet

Pip
@Wardy added

ty

1:27 PM
things are much quieter here since codename gdse appeared aha

Pip
yep :D

why exactly did we create the other room ? lol

user92578
I just totally needed a pen and paper to figure out an equation for moving a slider based on it's numeric value

user92578
and to be honest, it doesn't make sense to me, but it works great

Pip
nice

1:38 PM
if you came up with it how it does not make sense? :P

user92578
(-m_SliderRange.X + (m_Increment * GetAbsolutePosition().X) + *m_Value.m_ValueFloat) / m_Increment;

+ *
huh

user92578
dereferencing a pointer

ah

2:26 PM
anyone know how to scale GUI-boxes relative to the longest single line in its contents in Unity?

you have multiple problems there
I imagine Unity has some pretty wrapper for it though
what have you tried?

2:41 PM
not much, I thought there was some property in unity for it
I'm using a GUI style which has lots of things, but nothing that sounds like what I want
GUI Skin I think it's called, not Style.

Anyone know what I can do to fix this ...

3:38 PM
@Joe It doesn't feel much different because you can't jump without using the weapon
Also, never, ever use animating favicons for a website. They're annoying if you have a tab open with them.

Joe
3:53 PM
What do you mean can't jump without the weapon

@Almo Oh god, they play? really?

yeah
:(
@Joe I mean I had to shoot to jump

Joe
Space jump should still work unless the web player is busted

@Tyyppi_77 Are you sure fp is either null or has already been freed at this point?
And if you are, then are you fclose()'ing eventually?

user92578
fp is null

user92578
3:59 PM
and it is getting fclosed

well then the tool is wrong (sorry if that wasn't clear what I meant)
unless! unless filename is a class which implements a const char* operator which leaks
