There is no better antidote, at least for the worst hours and eclipses of the soul, than to conjure up … serious frivolity.—Friedrich Nietzsche

No, it’s not a new flavor of Unix shell. Rather, Winter Bash is an ancient tradition of Stack Exchange. (2011 is ancient according to Internet time.) Here’s how it works:

Starting right now, when you complete one of 30-odd challenges while logged on a participating site, you will be awarded the associated hat. To notify you, an icon will light up on the top bar. In addition, admire your hat collection on the Winter Bash 2014 site …

I got myself a pasul Chanuka Menora

YeZ
@StackExchange Are the hats all mystery prizes, or is there any hints somewhere?

@YeZ I got two hats already; one here, one on Lifehacks

YeZ
@Shokhet So is there a list?

@ShmuelBrin You mean, as a Winterbash hat, or as a menora?
@YeZ When you log in, there is the red number of inbox messages, the green rep counter, and a blue number for new hats. I got "Saint Lucia" on MY and LH.....whatever that means.
When there is no blue number there, there is a gray snowflake icon
Apparently, the hat I got is for voting today
@Scimonster Do another one, get a hat! ;-)

@Shokhet I just did one and didn't get a hat...

.....give it some time.

YeZ
@Shokhet If I accept that answer now, will I get the one for accepted answer with no votes?
too late.

@YeZ Probably not, because [1] accepts on your own answers don't count for Enlightened and Guru badges [2] you can't accept your own answer until two days after asking.

12:47 AM
@YeZ That's a cool hat you're wearing.....I may just have to post another Q/A set just for it :)
@havarka Yeah, I don't think that is really a good answer to the question; but what can you do?

2 hours later…
2:47 AM
@Shokhet winterbash

@MonicaCellio Nice write-up! And thanks very much again for coming; it was great for everyone there to get to meet you in person, both those who already knew you from here, and those who didn't.

@IsaacMoses I'm really glad I came! It was really nice to be able to meet people I only knew by name/gravatar, and some I know but don't know I know, you know? :-)

@MonicaCellio Who knows? ;^P
3

And also the ones who I didn't know from here -- you've got a really great local crowd down there.
@IsaacMoses yeah, something like that. :-)

3:54 AM
@MonicaCellio Yeah; thanks. I like the people here.

@MonicaCellio judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/14462/… Ironically, a comment by @IsaacMoses on a post of yours!

@DoubleAA laugh -- I'd forgotten all about that! (Both the question and the comment.) That sounds like what he did.

@DoubleAA Wow; good find. I have no memory of posting that comment, myself. @MonicaCellio, yes, that's what I did. Both big shuls here make a point of making a similar announcement when they present gifts to benei/benot mitzva on Shabbat morning.

@IsaacMoses thanks for filling in the details for me. That makes sense.

4:18 AM
@IsaacMoses @MonicaCellio Luckily for me, it was result number 9 for a google search for zachin leadam shelo befanav

@DoubleAA it helps to know what to search for. :-)

@DoubleAA Dear me. We need to put up some more authoritative content using that maxim!

@MonicaCellio (To help you remember, Zachin זכין is from the same root as זכות merit. The other words I suspect you can get.)

@DoubleAA thanks. I did get the others once you used the phrase. I did not make the connection with the first word (so is the nun part of the shoresh or if not, where does it come from?).

@MonicaCellio The nun is aramaic. Think of it like a the familiar yud-mem suffix in Hebrew. So like אנחנו מזכים (only the pronoun is implied and the present tense prefix isn't around in the Aramiac there)

4:27 AM
@DoubleAA oh, Aramaic! I should have guessed that. Thanks for explaining.

5 hours later…
9:18 AM
@DoubleAA It's not Mishnaic Hebrew?

1 hour later…
10:41 AM
what Zachin? No, it's aramaic

2 hours later…
12:45 PM
@Scimonster @havarka hmm if the whole phrase was Aramaic, wouldn't it end "bifneih"?
Or "be-anpaneih," or something?

1:24 PM
"הוא כלל במשפט העברי"
We really need to get cracking - only 62 hats on Mi Yodeya! Lifehacks, in private beta, has more!

i meant zachin was aramaic, but what does it matter what language it is, isn't the main thing understand what is the meaning?!
@Scimonster don't you agree?

@havarka Sure, the most important thing is knowing what it means.

@Scimonster Good :)

But we also like discussing random things like what language it it. ;)

If there is no nafka mina, what's the point :)

1:34 PM
But we also like discussing random things like what language it is. ;)

if that's your cup of tea :) not mine

@havarka yours is discussing other people discussing random things? 8^D

2:03 PM
@havarka I asked why it was spelled the way it was, because that wasn't what I was expecting for a word with that meaning (so I thought it wasn't that word), and the answer was that it's Aramaic not Hebrew. That helped me understand the term so I consider that valuable.

Q: Why is there a Saint Lucia hat on Mi Yodeya?

user6641Irrespective of the answer to this question I was surprised to see Saint Lucia hats on the avatars of several members of Mi Yodeya. I was wondering why this option was being presented.

2:51 PM
@Scimonster Do you get "Warm Welcome" for a first-posts review?
It looks good on you :P
@ShmuelBrin I interpreted it as a stam statement, initially......but I eventually figured it out :)
@all -- just wondering why judaism.stackexchange.com/q/50410/5323 might be DVed.....we've already established that lack of upvotes is very dependent on a number of unknown factors....but what's with the DV? Is the question unclear?

3:42 PM
@havarka Do you skip U'va leTziyon because it isn't the main part of Shacharit??
@Scimonster Yay! I'm in 1st and 1st on MY

3:58 PM
@DoubleAA no, i don't skip, why are you asking?

Note that -in is also a Hebrew suffix (borrowed from the Aramaic). — msh210 ♦ Jul 17 at 16:22
@havarka You seemed to imply above that things which are not the main point should be skipped.

4:23 PM
@DoubleAA And now I'm tied with you at 4!

5:20 PM
@Scimonster I have six!
And I figured out how to get Chameleon!! :)
Is there a hat for figuring out a secret hat?

@IsaacMoses @DoubleAA followup on zachin leadam shelo befanav, so we'll (with luck) have something better for Google to index: judaism.stackexchange.com/q/50435/472
(I realize I could have just asked Isaac, but I'd rather have the info on the main site for future searchers.)

Q: Winter Bash 2014 Secret Hats

KevinSo far, I've unlocked one of the secret hats. I'm wondering what other secret hats are out there and how to earn them.

SPOILER ALERT

@DoubleAA got it

@MonicaCellio I like how you implemented another maxim, Hevei dan et kol adam lechaf zechut, inasking about this one. :) I think you went the right way if you want well-informed answers.

Q: Were there any sages who supported the Zealots during the seige of Jerusalem?

Bruce JamesIn Gittin 56a-b, we read how the sages warned the Zealots (a.k.a. the Biryonim) to not wage war with the Romans who were holding Jerusalem under seige, but that the Biryonim set fire to the store houses, making war inevitable. Thereafter, Yochanan ben Zakkai faked his death and negotiated with V...

6:50 PM
@Scimonster If you were the Community of a Jewish Q&A site, wouldn't you want the Gelt hat?

@DoubleAA Of course. But how did it get it?

@Scimonster By offering a bounty during (roughly-UTC-dated-) Chanukkah. Duh.

@IsaacMoses thank you. :-)

7:12 PM
Another siddur related question: Does anyone have a preference of a quarter to a third of a page being blank so that kaddish shalem can be on one page, or it taking up two pages instead?

@NoachmiFrankfurt I don't mind Kaddish being split. Of course, if it'll leave other blank space after, it would make sense to put it before.

@Scimonster It's the kaddish just before Bameh Madlikin (Aleinu or schul kiddush in Eastern Ashkenazi siddurim). I've tried to be careful about not splitting tefillot up, except when length prevents them from being only one page long

@NoachmiFrankfurt Kaddish, at least, has natural "rests" in which the chazzan can turn the page - the times when the congregation is responding.

@IsaacMoses true, I will of course see when the break would fall out, but I suspect it would cut off before yehei shmeḥ

@NoachmiFrankfurt Even an "Amen" break provides enough time to turn the page.

7:21 PM
For those following, in the Western Ashkenazi rite, common practice is to recite Bameh Madlikin after Maariv instead of just before.

@IsaacMoses Good point, I guess that my insecurity about this is from a time when I was davening before the amud and accidentally turned the page to the wrong kaddish (yatom, instead of shalem) leaving out the all important "titkabbel" (or stuttering yehei sh'loma half a dozen times before finding the right page, despite knowing the tefillah by heart)

I got a partial answer from a great rabbi that I have self-answered, but feels like there’s still much more to the story judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/49247/…

@ablaze Nice! Thanks for coming back to post the answer :)
2

@Shokhet I am going to keep coming back and coming back until the answer is ANSWERED
5

@ablaze That's very generous of you :)
I think I saw an answer to that question in an article somewhere.....if I find it, I'll let you know :)

7:48 PM
@IsaacMoses This is what I get for using an amen break: all of chatzi kaddish on one page, so that tithable will be on the overleaf

@NoachmiFrankfurt that split, in particular, could be problematic, since it may look to the chazzan like only a chatzi kaddish is meant to be said. Breaking either higher or lower would probably be better.

@ShmuelBrin Just one more till 20k!
2

@IsaacMoses No space on the page for lower, higher might be even more problematic, as the sha"tz should really stop between brich hu and l'eyla. I'd attach a screen cap, but I'm unsure about how

@Scimonster He has 20,009 already...... ;-)

@Scimonster @ShmuelBrin Mazal Tov! Yeyasher kochacha on making the minyan in the 20K club!

7:55 PM
(no, that wasn't me)

@ShmuelBrin yasher koyach on 20k!

@IsaacMoses I didn't even vote, but shkoiach nonetheless. 😃

@NoachmiFrankfurt once you've got a screen cap, you can post it into the chat room by clicking on the "upload..." button (next to "send") and then either dropping the file onto the pop-up dialogue or navigating to it. This uploads the file to imgur and then links it in here.

8:11 PM
I'm going to have to agree with @IsaacMoses on this one, Joseph. "לשון חל" does not mean "profane" in any other sense besides for telling us that a word is not referring to a name of God. I admire your tenacity in holding on to the way you've always learned these verses; however, you should know that you will be rewarded for learning this way also ;-) — Shokhet 42 secs ago

@ShmuelBrin Shkoyach! Remember you have a delete vote now for really poor answer.

judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/50450/…, Why was @Scimonster's answer deleted from this?
@MonicaCellio Thanks, I'd tried the upload button, but it was not responding

@NoachmiFrankfurt Because Double AA pointed out that it wasn't such a great answer anyways.

@Scimonster It could likely have been improved

8:26 PM
@NoachmiFrankfurt If i'm able to improve it, i'll undelete.
but as it stands, i didn't feel i could add anything
And... hat!

8:45 PM
@YeZ You've been posting a lot of answers today....I'll presume that means that they were premeditated?

@Shokhet 3 of them were in the works. Another one I had in mind. I am collecting hats.

@YeZ You won't get that badge for five answers in 30 minutes; וז"ל:

@Shokhet NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
what a waste

Well I just maxed out rep for the day with my 5 answers.

@YeZ Nice!
How close are you to Epic?

@Shokhet uhhh maybe like 4/50?

@Scimonster This I knew about myself, already:

@Scimonster so 7?

8:52 PM
@Scimonster I got that yesterday :P

@Shokhet I see. :P

Just missed it for getting the werewolf hunter hat......though I got it anyway for a score 25 answer on LH

I suppose we just needed a couple new chatters.

@Shokhet I happen to think spoc looks much better on me.

@Scimonster Hats are here for two weeks, really more....go do your work :P
Speaking of leaving, I kinda have to go now.....TZT all!

TZT!

Who gave the community user his hat?!?

@IsaacMoses that wasn't a hidden answer to my question, was it?

Q: Community, please show some holiday spirit!

F'xWhy does Community get hats? And more importantly: why does she not wear them? Please, show some goddamn holiday spirit! Can we get Community to wear her hats, either randomly or through popular vote?

@IsaacMoses I just came back to let you know that a friend texted me, asking me a hilchos Chanuka question.....I texted him back what I remembered from C - MY?, with the s.tk/miyodeya link (I would've given him the special referrer link, but I haven't memorized the question number)

9:08 PM
@Shokhet 1568, how could you forget?!

@Shokhet Nice

@Scimonster :P .....I know my UID, though :)

@Shokhet I know mine too. (Very easy: 5151) And i even know my SO UID, which is a lot longer than 5151: 3187556

@YeZ how can you say that providing good answers (well, I'm assuming -- haven't read them yet) is a waste?
3

@Scimonster That is pretty easy -- mine is 5323, which isn't much harder....the only question is; why did you memorize your SO UID??

9:12 PM
@Shokhet For inserting into the SEDE

YeZ
@MonicaCellio I could've posted it 3 hours from now and it would have been just as good!

:-P

@Scimonster Ah. Come to think of it, that's probably why I memorized mine.

9:13 PM
@YeZ Let's make a deal - i'll go downvote a bunch, then upvote others, then remove the DVs, and you'll have cheated the cap!

YeZ
@Scimonster Where do I fit in to that deal?

@Scimonster Does that work? .....also, don't get yourself suspended for that.

@YeZ No idea.

YeZ
@Scimonster Agreed! You've got yourself a deal!

@Shokhet ah. Oh well; timing is like that sometimes...

9:14 PM
@Shokhet No idea, again. :P
I think we should do Purim Torah more than once a year, i really can't wait. :P How about during Winter Bash?

@IsaacMoses can you help steer me toward a melody I heard Shabbat morning? I'd like to try bringing the Eitz Chayim y'all do to my minyan (way better than what we do now). I've heard it before -- sounds Carlebach, but that's not specific enough. Just as most 4/4 songs are Greensleeves-complete, most texts can be squished into most Carlebach melodies. Ideally I'd find a recording of that melody with that text; failing that, knowing the name of the melody would help me experiment. Any clues?
(Asking here because probably others use it too and you might be able to say something to other folks here that would enable them to answer my question if you can't.)
I could la-la-la the parts that are stuck in my brain, but kol isha?

9:30 PM
@MonicaCellio I know two "standard" tunes. Was it this one?
... a few weeks ago, I heard Cantor Sherwood Goffin lecture here, and he mentioned that he had popularized this tune (I think it was this one), shortly after it was written, by leading kids in singing it at NCSY gatherings.

@IsaacMoses that's it! (The congregation sang it much faster, but that's the melody.) Thanks very much!
So, not Carlebach. Huh, sure sounded like! I'm glad to have the correction.

@MonicaCellio No problem. Here's another recording, apparently by the composer, Tanchum Portnoy. I don't know anything else about TP, but he may well have been a student of Carlebach.
... the first recording here is the same tune, a bit faster, and with no repetition (but with some misaccentations, I hasten to grumble)

9:47 PM
I just took #1 for MY with 8 hats, beating @IsaacMoses's 7.

Q: It actually isn't Hanukkah yet. Anywhere

ScimonsterWhy are people earning the Gelt hat today? - the Gelt hat can be awarded when it's December 16th somewhere.
