@bjb568 funny story, I moved messages from one room to another as an archival thing the other day...

yeah, apparently every single ping in the moved messages got refired

including the superpings

so suddenly about 15 people came running to a normally almost dead chatroom...

@Omen and yeah, if you have a topic of discussion you want to cover with someone or a point to share, pinging is fine, but generally just pinging to say hi is frowned upon as there isn't actually anything for them to respond to or interact with

if you have a question for them specifically, pinging is fine

it's just a courtesy thing that kind of goes with the culture of SE chat. You'll get used to it

okay okay, I have been told by 3-4 people now, no more please (I am not an idiot, contrary to the seeming consensus), i have got the point, okay? Also, it should be noted I have seen different in many other rooms.
