byee
honestly though what else is gonna go down there? you would have to make text small or curve it to fit down there
yeah but it looks ugly lol
that's true
I don't mind it so much, although misleading advertising is always annoying.
you'd almost want a bar at the top so it's at least symmetrical
00:02
Woa. the black bar
what were they thinking?
pizza time
talk later :)
mmmmmm pizza
Pip
Pip
@AttackingHobo latah
pizza <3
It's gatta be a technical limitation
for sure, but still... :/

on a scale of 1 to win, they are win
now i[m hungry
mmm
since when did stack exchange chat have desktop notifications
SE must've just improved it
it only ever seemed to work properly with Safari
kind of worked with Chrome but then it stopped working for months
but yeah working now in Chrome
00:11
i've never had one
hmm
ping me

I turned them on earlier, they are pretty nice
that was incredibly awesome

I just noticed today, I think they're new, at least for firefox
00:12
Maybe it came on today then
Pip
Pip
@OMGtechy minimize the chat :P
@OMGtechy
It comes up even without it minimised
it's so win
Pip
Pip
cool, it didn't for me
it also tells me that there's this guy called Pip who really seems to like me
what a weirdo righT?

It's because I'm better
No mine was last
You are last
in life

tru
00:16
much harsh
such shame
wow there's a site called dog shaming
haha
it's so doge
if I had to do one for my cat, it'd be "I run around the house at 5am, meowing my head off and ripping up the carpet"
cat goes crazy and annoying lol
yeah they get crazy at night
wtf is this
Or even this dude
Ok enough gifs from me for now
00:20
lol
I am still battling this UnityScript to C# stuff
What about it?
biggest woe is not being able to modify like a Vector3's variable simply
have to create a whole nother vector first then assign it
transform.localScale.x = 0; throws an error
yeah it's a pain, but tbh it's probably doing it under the hood
alternativly use translate
yeah it would have been
hence the long compile times I'm sure haha
@OMGtechy translate, what do you mean?
this.transform.translate
or Translate, I'm not sure
in a lot of cases you need a new vector3 anyway for that though
00:23
ohhh, yeah that can be a handy function
it at least lets you see how wasteful you're being rather than hiding it
wait, why can't you assign to Vector3.x? what's the error?
but but I want things easy
You can, but not to transform @IcyDefiance
so you can't do transform.position.x = whatever;
error CS1612: Cannot modify a value type return value of `UnityEngine.Transform.localScale'. Consider storing the value in a temporary variable
00:24
oh, because position is a property, that's why
so I just make a new Vector3 and yeah
but yeah
all over the show
It'd still be nice if we could change each thingy
zzzz lol
without having to new a vector3 each time
00:26
yeah, it's a funky thing with structs being passed by value and properties being syntax sugar for functions
Yeah
surly a setter would be nice though
ah it's just annoying but such is life
I really really really hope this all works in the end
it won't
lol
tumblr cat says so
00:31
guess I'll pack my bags
float foo;
if (!foo) { Bar(); }
"The !' operator cannot be applied to operand of type float'"
are you shitting me
sigh
well no
that doesn't make any sense
yeah that error is logical
why would you even want to do that?
00:34
it's javascript that is crazy by allowing it. stupid javascript.
to me, with javascript, means if it's zero or null
lol yeah
float cannot be null
it's a value type
if you want to check if it's 0 then do == 0.0f
that shit is just shit
literally
so the operand should just interpret that I mean to say `if != 0`
all this extra work I have to do ;_;
hahaha
float? is nullable.
damn this extra typing
00:35
or Nullable<float> but no one wants to type all that
@IcyDefiance I haven't touched the whole ? thingy
lol
I've used nullable types a few times, but it's rare.
I can think of a few uses
but still I haven't needed them yet
foo = bar ? baz : qux;
00:37
usually it's just an easy way to return an error. like List.FindIndex() will return a -1 if it can't find the item, if a negative number is actually valid then you can return null instead.
mmm I like that with Lists
@IcyDefiance yeah, the last time I found a place I think that'd be useful was with an enum
I wanted to check if the enum was uninitialised. I just added a default Unset value instead though
I do like the int CompareTo(T foo) thing
@Chris what's wrong with the conditional operator?
@OMGtechy hmm what?
you put the conditional operator thingy there
I assumed you were complaining
because we're devs n shit
ah nah nah, I like it
felt like typing it
00:39
you go express your ternary self
think I misread the gist of the convo
do(expressionRequired ? awesomeStuff() : nahh());
that line will only work if awesomeStuff() and nahhh() both return the same type, or can be implicitly converted to the same type. can't return void either.
nahh just returns false because nahh
awesomeStuff always returns true because it's awesome
lol
00:42
I thought this much was obvious
and do just takes a bool
because it doesn't know what to do with it's life
Depressed Functions Anonymous
but it's not an anonymous function.
lmao
dammit @IcyDefiance
why did you have to say that
because I'm an asshole who likes ruining jokes ._.
you are a joke
oh yeah
I went there.
00:49
@IcyDefiance but do you like ruining people's games of LoL by kicking their asses with Master Yi?
only if I can see the other team doesn't have much cc. he's shut down too easily.
if they don't have cc, then yeah, I'll wreck shit
hahah :)
but you're not online
NONE OF THE GDSE PLAYERS IS ONLINE
yeah, I'm trying to sell an implant in EVE and no one will buy it. I just keep getting undercut and being forced to pay another couple hundred thousand to relist the damn thing over and over. :'(
it's worth 29m and I'd almost be able to buy a battlecruiser if it sold. then I could start on level 3 missions and earn money much faster.
but nope, other players never cooperate
but now I've relisted it, so I'll log into LoL
wait
set it for 3 months to sell
@IcyDefiance you can alter the price for 100 ISK
._.
well fuck me
lol I'll do that next time
00:56
you can alter it every 5 min
gotcha. well, the highest buy order is 12.something million, so I can make profit even if it won't sell at what I want.
Joe
Joe
talk to the buy order guy and split the difference
could probably convince him to go 20 flat
I think the market is anonymous. at least there's no name right in the open.
Joe
Joe
oh well i tried
so whats going on tonight
02:00
Ey guys
Joe
Joe

@SpartanDonut @JohnMcDonald almost there
Nice!
If I know my blacksmithing, which I don't, you're missing a cast?
or... mold, whatever
Joe
Joe
neither do i... but im brainstorming how many tools i will actually need to implement what im considering "enough" game mechanics
Joe
Joe
i wonder if i can get away with metal bars
and some sort of fly out to determine what "shape" you will be hammering them into
not planning on doing anything groundbreaking
Yeah. What's this for?
Joe
Joe
02:31
sort of a self imposed challenge... trying to tune up my "painting" skills for the next thing
but i figure in the process i could make some sort of "papers please" clone in the medieval blacksmith "genre" lol
taking what i learned from the russian roulette thing to the next step
Joe
Joe
andy warcat?
@hasherr Nice job!
lol
I think it turned out pretty good
Joe
Joe
not too TABBY
02:33
Programmed it myself :P
Joe
Joe
HUEHUEHUEHUE
OH YOU
And now my printer (his name is Jerry) is being a troll
@hasherr, now do this:
Steganography (US /ˌstɛ.ɡʌnˈɔː.ɡrʌ.fi/, UK /ˌstɛɡ.ənˈɒɡ.rə.fi/) is the art or practice of concealing a message, image, or file within another message, image, or file. The word steganography combines the Ancient Greek words steganos (στεγανός), meaning "covered, concealed, or protected", and graphein (γράφειν) meaning "writing". The first recorded use of the term was in 1499 by Johannes Trithemius in his Steganographia, a treatise on cryptography and steganography, disguised as a book on magic. Generally, the hidden messages will appear to be (or be part of) something else: images, articles, shopping...
Whoa
that's cool
Joe
Joe
very cool actually damn
02:44
And pretty straight forward when you think about it
Who would notice a difference between #659afa and #659bfb? Nobody, that's who. Now you have 3 bits of info in 1 pixel x a few thousand pixels. Bam, there's your encoded message
Joe
Joe
i wonder if there are tools for this
if not we need to make them
That's a great idea.
There should be tonnes of these out there. Like this online one: mobilefish.com/services/steganography/steganography.php
So I printed out like seven of these images with the cat on it
Our entire CS class has been working and modifying this one image of this cat for about 2 weeks now, so he's very iconic
So I'm going to go into class early tomorrow and put the flags up all over the place
On the teacher's monitor, under keyboards, taped to computers
heh, nice
Joe
Joe
03:02
@JohnMcDonald so i think im going to cheese the "bar making" process
unless i can think of a better way to make this work...
because sand & molds seems too intricate
or clay whatever
Ok
It does seem tedious
Joe
Joe
unless...
idk would it seem to be a copout if i had one sand mold, that you could mouse wheel into different "patterns"
then fill... i dont know... but what i do know is that i wont have room for multiple different molds unless i do some sort of "storage"
thinking out loud ^
Well... depends where this is going. Like... isn't cast iron just that? Pour molten iron into something and let it cool?
yup:
Cast iron is iron or a ferrous alloy which has been heated until it liquefies, and is then poured into a mould to solidify. It is usually made from pig iron. The alloy constituents affect its colour when fractured: white cast iron has carbide impurities which allow cracks to pass straight through. Grey cast iron has graphite flakes which deflect a passing crack and initiate countless new cracks as the material breaks. Carbon (C) and silicon (Si) are the main alloying elements, with the amount ranging from 2.1–4 wt% and 1–3 wt%, respectively. Iron alloys with less carbon content are known as steel...
Joe
Joe
i want to display how arduous the process of "smithing stuff" is
and just really try and run parallel with papers please
increasing difficulty, more tools as you go on
As for how you go from molten iron to a sword? I donno, what happens to the pig iron? I'd assume they cast the iron into... rods or something, then bang on it
Joe
Joe
03:08
more orders, getting stuff wrong and wasting materials
Joe
Joe
need to figure out how much detail i want in the process
Yeah, could just be that you make cast iron swords
I donno
Joe
Joe
i wonder if i scrap "molds" and try something more outside the box
I didn't play too too much of Papers Please, but enough to understand the game mechanics during the early part of the game
Joe
Joe
03:10
i dont need to clone it exactly, just sort of playing with an experiment here
Joe
Joe
picking up and moving tools around a workspace
applying them to other objects
i think i have an idea and its different and weird
And Papers Please isn't?
:p
Joe
Joe
that game was refreshing for me i like playing those edge cases
"You are a border crossing official and get to decide if people are allowed into the country. You look at passports and documentation and stuff. Stamp yes or no"
hah, sounds so boring on paper
But it's pretty awesome
Joe
Joe
03:14
yes it is
both boring and awesome
I can't think of a more boring premise for a game
Joe
Joe
so im thinking my process is heat smelter, put ore into smelter, keep at temperature (color), liquid metal fills bucket... pour bucket into mold, cool mold in water trough to get out a bar
Sounds good
Joe
Joe
heat bar to temperature, place on anvil. and hammer hits begin giving you different "trees" for shapes you can make
or each shape takes X hits to complete
then reheat and choose new path...
that way i can make it complex without having 20 molds?
That last bit could get complex. Any idea what you'd do for the UI?
Joe
Joe
03:21
im thinking some sort of "shadow" transparency or outline of the chosen end result (super emposed on the bar)
or even on the hammer
to imply next hit is going to work towards "this thing"
and possibly right click hammer functionality to bring up "known options"
right click this thing to see what you can do to it sort of
actually liking the way this sounds... and feeling motivated cuz it doesn't look too much like garbage at the moment
:) good
I've gtg. Good luck!
Joe
Joe
nite and ty

06:48
Morning!
07:26
good morning!

1 hour later…
08:30
Hey good morning everyone. I am dealing with background music playing in all scenes continuously. Issue is that the sound plays loud in just one scene and with low volume in all others. Also I am trying to use singleton pattern for this as told in these links
@Joe @SpartanDonut
09:03
sort it out. It was because my sound clip was set 3d.

2 hours later…
11:12
morning
Jon
Jon
did some drunken coding last night
revised it today... it is spot on
hahaha
I did that two days ago
@Jon I tend to overengineer things when I'm sober
you too?
Jon
Jon
hmm.. not really
i seem to have coded for so long now, its pretty much just the same
are you a professional developer?
Jon
Jon
11:24
yeah but I don't wear suits
why the "but" in there?
Jon
Jon
i don't know
well I only write code at work when I need it for my own purposes, so it usually turns out crappy with lots of "and later I might need this" features
Jon
Jon
ah, i've been a full time developer since 2004
started with .net 1.1
hobbyist since 15 years and started with AVR assembler
Jon
Jon
11:31
hobbyist since forever
lol :)
this high level stuff still creeps me out
Jon
Jon
its basically one line of code for a crapload of code
which works out once the libraries you are working with are solid
or many lines of code for no code since we have enable_if
my self-picked hobby is trying to write solid libraries for others to use, and I usually fail at that (but it's fun)
Jon
Jon
Hobbies keep you sane.
I'm not really sure if that always holds
Jon
Jon
11:39
no its true man, jesus told me so
man i'm trying to write a algorithm that settles my cellular automata water
Jon
Jon
11:52
so far.. not executing fast enough
12:11
I don't understand that algorithm description
Heyhey
Hi @Lokkij
Anyone doing anything exciting?
Developing any games?
nope, not really
Jon
Jon
beefing up my liquid physics
12:19
@Jon Nice. Be sure to create a nice gif when it's done :D
Jon
Jon
so what about this Microsoft buying Mojang?
3
Ugh, these school laptops are soooo slow.. they can barely handle this chat
@Jon well it's just rumors, right?
Jon
Jon
no
deal has been ongoing for 3 months apparently.
Or has it been confirmed alread?
So they're defintely buying it?
2 billion seems like a lot; twitch sold for half of that
Jon
Jon
yup... disney bought star wars for a similar amount
If I was notch.. i'd dissapear
come back as Herobrine
topple microsoft, via mutiny -- all hail the return of notch
