5:00 PM
Early reports from friends is that the market is robust and that you can easily farm yourself a free sub if you value your money slightly more than your time.

@SaintWacko Sorry, asked and then zoned out for lunch ;) Yeah, I prepurchased it on a whim and have been playing since 3 days before launch.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Now I am avoiding it because that is something I like doing.
Playing markets.

@Basil Do you have any guest passes?
I'd really love to play, but I can't justify dropping $60 on it without trying it first

@JasonBerkan well it made sense somewhat

@SaintWacko I will check- I gave 2 away, but the third might not have been used

5:02 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz are these "subs" available from other players or can you actually buy it with in-game currency from a store of some sorts?

I was much more annoyed by the midgame cutscene

@Basil Thanks, that would be amazing :)

I played a whole lot of Wildstar in the beta. The game is doing basically everything right, and I would have bought and subscribed if I had MMO-grade free time ATM.

@OrigamiRobot I am a wow refugee- I was way into making money on the AH

It would've been way way more effective to not yank control

5:02 PM
@Chippies You are buying from players via an in-game exhange

@Basil That's how my girlfriend was

I decided to play this when I heard about their currency for gametime option

@OrigamiRobot sooo, we're always at the mercy of supply and demand

Selling disenchanting mats, I think she said

@Chippies always are ;)

5:03 PM
@Chippies Well, no, there's also a flat rate you can buy subscriptions direct from the dev, of course. So there's a ceiling.

@SaintWacko I was a millionaire before they raised the gold cap ;)

@LessPop_MoreFizz direct from dev with in-game currency? :o

The best part about credd (the month for game-currency) is that is puts a cap on what gold sellers can make
@Chippies from other players with in-game currency

@Basil She mostly worked on playing the market and getting mounts
At one point she had all the mounts in the game

@badp You are correct about that. I just disliked that a game mocking FPSs had a regular FPS trope boss fight at the end.

@Basil he said there's a flat rate, so I'm not sure if that's referring to real currency of in-game

@SaintWacko cool :) I never much cared about the collection minigame, but more the raw barely-regulated capitalism that game economics leads to

@JasonBerkan well what about the Doom/Quake style "you should have about 8 or 9 different weapons?"

@LessPop_MoreFizz thanks for the link!

The chemical thrower is a gimmick and the bolt thing useless without a scope

5:05 PM
It would make me so incredibly happy if I could try it out

@Chippies You can buy a sub in dollars that's only for you, or you can buy a credd in dollars that you can sell for gold

Everything I read says it's amazing

it's more dollars for a tradable credd than for the sub

And I've been feeling the MMO itch lately

@badp That was also an issue.

5:06 PM
if i have to aim a headshot without assist anyway I'll just use a cheaper pistol instead

@SaintWacko it's still a bit buggy, but extremely playable. Everything is a skillshot, and combat feels very cool

(by assist I mean zoom in a little)

@Basil In GW and GW2, I spent all my time trading

@badp Though if you can't aim, the crossbow does a ton more damage, which I didn't learn until after I finished, because why would I choose a crossbow instead of a gun?

In GW2, the mystic forge made it soooooo easy.

5:07 PM
@Basil Good, that's fun

@JasonBerkan If you can't aim getting to the point where you get the crossbow is going to be miserable
bodyshots do hardly any damage
you might as well wrench everything

@OrigamiRobot it's fun :) Honestly, most of the work done to make an MMO is content that could stand just fine in a single player game. The MM part makes an economy and group play (pvp and pve)

I used to earn lots and lots and lots and lots of gold in WOW by exploiting craft-> disenchant arbitrage loops.

In GW1, I actually had to walk to trade items between places

@LessPop_MoreFizz yeah, the "shuffle", we called it on the forums

5:08 PM
@Basil Indeed, I was well aware of them. :P

@OrigamiRobot kind of like eve- where something is matters in real markets. Not in wow or wildstar, though

would someone with a guest pass be able to buy CREDD?

@Chippies no

Oooh, Nintendo is working on a Prime-style Metroid, and a classic-style Metroid. :3

they can't even use the CX or AH, I think

5:09 PM
@Chippies No - you need to buy the game itself before anything, no matter what.

@Basil bleh :P

Which is a flat 60 dollar fee, and includes your first month.

I'll have to look into it when it goes on sale or just drops in price

@badp Plasmids + machine gun + respawns. I'm serious about the crossbow, though. It does 10x as much damage as the pistol.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Did you ever read any of the economy content on wow insider/joystiq?

5:09 PM
In GW2, you could (and maybe still can idk) buy platinum from the trade house, then convert it to mithril at the mystic forge, then sell on the trade house for massive profits.

@JasonBerkan The enemies that go down with more than 3 bullets in the head are few
They're not far between, typically, but they're few

@OrigamiRobot Right now, the problem Wildstar's having is that we keep finding ways to vendor things profitably, and that throws the amount of gold in the economy out of whack

Then repeat until you've saturated the mithril market.
Then wait for it to recover

@Basil I was familiar with it, yeah.
I used to have (and to some extent, still do without playing), my hooks very, very, very deep into the WoW community.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I wrote most of it :)

5:12 PM
@Basil Oh, so it's you who I blame for killing my margins?

I also did a podcast called "call to auction"

wildstar has bootylicious animation

@GnomeSlice ...

@GnomeSlice ...

@LessPop_MoreFizz heh, uninformed competition is a poor way to protect margins

5:12 PM
just saying

@Basil More like the best way.

@GnomeSlice Whatever you do, don't roll furry. They're sooooo common...

@Basil This is why I just stayed out of the glyph business in general. :P too much effort.

Knowledge is power!

Roll?

5:13 PM
@GnomeSlice create a character

@LessPop_MoreFizz Glyphs were dead the day they came out- Gevlon, an old popular blogger, popularized the market and there was a constant influx of people trying to "dominate" it

< doesn't play MMOs

Also, I relied on being The Guy Who Literally had Every Enchanting Pattern in The Game, including all of the dumb low level twink shit that was impossible to farm to make most of my money on value adds with lower level materials.

The term comes from tabletop games, where you would roll dice to determine the stats of a character

@Basil Oh, that asshole.
I remember him.

5:14 PM
oh

@LessPop_MoreFizz I like him- he's an honest sociopath
Still writes about eve on his site

@Basil Well, you have the sociopath part right.

@Basil my girlfriend says she loves you

@LessPop_MoreFizz He is on a crusade against the goons right now, and that's been months of entertainment in my rss reader
@SaintWacko Tell her to start a wildstar account :) It's everything wow was and more
I don't think I'm going to do podcasting or writing about it, though- just reddit I think.

wildstar players get all the ass

5:16 PM
MtG satisfies my economy needs right now.

@GnomeSlice They created an entire playable race on the good faction that's essentially furrys.

@GnomeSlice ?

Most of the ass-getting would be concentrated there, I'd think

5 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
wildstar has bootylicious animation

sigh

5:17 PM
@OrigamiRobot As in "magic the gathering"?

@Basil Yes

I need to stop reading Wildstar reviews

@OrigamiRobot What kind of economy do they have? I thought it was a card game

It's making me want to skip getting a guest pass and go straight to buying it
Which is bad because I do not have the money to do that right now

@Basil The cards.

5:18 PM
@Basil It's a trading card game.

@Basil I think he's just referring to how much real-world money he has to spend on it to remain competitive.

@Basil Of course he hates goons. He hates fun.

@SaintWacko If you play the market, it'll be an MMO you don't have a monthly fee for

woah, I want this!

5:18 PM
@Basil That would be nice. I never really got to that point in EVE, but I could have

@StrixVaria I don't spend any money to stay competitive because I don't play expensive competitive formats.

SHOTGUN SOULS GAMEPLAY TRAILER

@SaintWacko Right now, it's easy- I'm making enough in 10 hours of play to pay for a month, and I'm barely doing anything right
It'll get harder over time...

@OrigamiRobot "up to date" then.

(Yes, I know it has a real name, but I am going to keep calling it SHOTGUN SOULS dammit.)

5:19 PM
@Basil Hm, that would be nice
Can you save up CREDD?

@StrixVaria That's not expensive either, for EDH.

@SaintWacko You can buy up a few months worth, yeah.

But of all players, only a small fraction pursue gold, and of those, only a small fraction do it well. If you're there, you will have a good time to credd ratio
@SaintWacko Hah, yes! And you can RESELL it!!

@OrigamiRobot I guess it is really the right format for me, if I had anyone nearby to play with ever.

@LessPop I'm gonna have to buy a PS4...

5:20 PM
@Fluttershy I KNOW. :(

@Basil I've never done much economy managing in MMOs, but I may have to try it

I am going wild buying now while I can, expecting it to skyrocket in price

I'll learn from you and my girlfriend :P

But still. Holy shit that trailer.

@less shotgun souls??

5:20 PM
I spend $100 per new set doing 5 prereleases and then $7 a week on drafting. That's it.

@SaintWacko I love this part of the game

im on my phone, pls describe this

Apparently, Witcher 3 looked amazing at e3 this year...

@GnomeSlice Dark souls, with shotguns

@GnomeSlice New game in development from Dark Souls devs. Watch the trailer. It is literally Dark Souls, except you have a Shotgun and a big fuck off sword and you use both simultaneously.

5:21 PM
WTF PLS

@GnomeSlice IT IS A REAL THING AND IT LOOKS AWESOME.

is this the project beast thing?

Yes

@GnomeSlice Yeah, but I think the actual name now is "Bloodborne".

Is it PS4 exclusive?

5:22 PM
But I am just going to keep calling it Shotgun Souls.

Also yes

Oh, damn

Or maybe Dark Souls May Cry.
2

My paycheck is in my account now

PS4 ugh noooooo

5:22 PM
That makes it even harder to resist buying wildstar

@Fluttershy You saw the gameplay trailer they released right?

@SaintWacko Get it on GMG- sometimes they have sales

souls of time

I am basically going to buy whatever the next macbook pro hardware update is at this point. :/

@LessPop_MoreFizz for gaming?

5:23 PM
@Basil yeah.

The rest of the value I get is from trading.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I know for the macintosh desktops, the cylindrical one, a teardown at launch showed that they cost less than their parts. I don't know if that's the case for the laptops, though...

> You have sent 68 cards with a total value of $1,390.14 and you have received 145 cards from other members with a total value of $1,295.17.

I run games via Bootcamp. Prefer OS X for everything else. Also, I travel for work 6-9 months out of the year, so a desktop isn't really viable.

@LessPop_MoreFizz then yeah, that makes sense. Personally, I can't game on a laptop, but I never have to.

5:25 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz if you didn't care for OS X, there are better windows laptop options

@Basil Typically, with Apple hardware, if you buy within a month or two of a product update, you get more performance for money than from competitors (or, yeah, in the case of the new towers, even than just homebuilding)
@Chippies Not really true if you 1) value actual portability and not just 'desktop I can fold up and put away, and 2) pay attention to the product cycle and buy recently updated apple kit.

gaming on apple :P

@LessPop_MoreFizz If I had unlimited money and didn't prefer windows, I'd probably be in the same boat :) For now, though, I build a PC and update parts slowly.

the 'Apple tax' is half myth, half people doing price comparisons on machines that are 6 months old.

@RPiAwesomeness Some of us here do this regularly.

5:27 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz it used to be more obvious, I think

Should this question be closed as too broad?

Q: Why can't I defeat Alduin?

marioblock12345I've almost completed the main quest and I've done a few side quests, and now I'm level 24. I am trying to defeat Alduin but I can't pull it off. Clearly my level isn't the problem, so something else is wrong. My strategy so far has been to send in followers to help me, but they don't die and I ...

Could we get some more detail about your character? What skills and perks you have, what gear you're using, etc.? It could be that you have a weakness we can help you fix, but we can't know that unless we know more. — SevenSidedDie Sep 27 '13 at 22:35

@JasonBerkan What? have conversations on Apple gaming/hardware?

@LessPop_MoreFizz MSI GS60/70 Pro has all the mobility you need and it has insane specs

When they had entry level desktops, they would be pretty comparable to specific non-mac vendors' models, and wouldn't compare favorably

PC manufacturers will throw in a new chipset the instant that they can, so you have 'new' hardware options keeping them competitive every 6 to 8 weeks. Apple, by contrast, does everything all at once in a speed bump update once a year, so tends to leapfrog and fall behind.

5:27 PM
@Basil alright, I'll keep an eye out for that

@RPiAwesomeness Game on Macs. I don't own a PC.

@Basil The status quo I'm describing has been the case for about 10 years now. Roughly since the Intel transition.

If you want entry level, go PC/Linux. Mac is for people who want power, but can afford it.

I go PC because building it out of parts lets me focus my money on what I really need/want, and because I like tinkering

Right now I have a high power gaming laptop, but I think my next computer is going to be a desktop, and a smaller laptop with a nice screen

5:28 PM
@JasonBerkan Really? Wow, I'd always heard that Mac's weren't good for gaming, as so many games are hard to get working on Mac, not to mention the hardware can be an issue.

And then I'll just use Steam's in-home streaming
Which is amazing

I had one of the first few generations of SSD, but only spent 80$ on a graphics card

@RPiAwesomeness You are living in 2002.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Call it the Intel tax then. AMD4lyfe

@RPiAwesomeness dual boot into windows takes away a lot of that

5:29 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Half my Steam library runs on OS X, and I reboot into Windows 7 for the other half.

@Chippies Good point

@RPiAwesomeness then again, you may as well get a windows PC/laptop if you're going to run windows on it :P

@OrigamiRobot Well, AMD gives great value for money, but can't keep up with any of Intel's more powerful parts blog.fierydragonlord.com/index.php?/archives/…

@Chippies Except that I only run Windows for maybe 20% of the time that I'm using my computer.

All of my DOS games run on my Mac.

5:29 PM
personally, I doubt I'll ever buy a mac, just because I don't care for OS X
@LessPop_MoreFizz that's why it's a decent value for you

Well gosh dangit. I started a flame war :P

@RPiAwesomeness DEATH TO THE MAC

@SaintWacko Lol

@DragonLord I am aware, but the extra power comes at a premium and isn't really useful for anything other than bragging rights.

Macs have their pros and cons, so do windows machines

5:30 PM
@SaintWacko That's what I plan to do. Build a powerful desktop and then buy a less powerful laptop, and if I need files or the power, just SSH/VNC into my desktop
@Chippies so do windows machines....like having a terrible OS? :D

@RPiAwesomeness If Google Pixel weren't so expensive, that's what I'd like to be my laptop

@RPiAwesomeness Windows 7 is baller. Windows 8.1 is pretty neat, but I haven't seen anything that makes me want to switch

@SaintWacko Yeah, that would be pretty neat. Only issue is you have to have WiFi to do basically anything

@RPiAwesomeness Yes, lets jump on the "windows sucks" train, without providing better alternatives :P

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, true

5:32 PM
@Basil 8.1 has better performance

@Basil good Windows skips generations

but probably not worth the ~100$

android master race

@Chippies Mac's fine, and Linux is better

Always has
@Chippies MSDN sub ftw :D

5:32 PM
@SaintWacko I just got the cheapo samsung chromebook- lasted a year and a half so far with horrible treatment. Can't go wrong for 200$ ;)

@Basil Windows 7 is currently better than anything else MS has to offer.

@RPiAwesomeness Mac requires expensive hardware, linux can't run half the stuff windows can without having to tinker with it into oblivion

Q: Can I reorganize vassals under multiple held titles?

JohnMy current character holds 3 kingdom titles, but somehow the vassals have ended up homogenized between them geographically. Is there a way I can reorganize my vassals so that if one of the titles is ever lost I don't end up ruling the Swiss Chesse Confederacy? Note: I'm already suspecting this i...

Love my Windows 8.1 laptop.

@RPiAwesomeness if I recall correctly, you have said that you haven't actually used Windows 8.1 on your own PC
:P

5:33 PM
I have to put XP on my "new" laptop because I don't have a spare Win7 key

Linux is for servers, not desktops. I'm in IT, and anyone who tells you otherwise is an idealist, a liar, or both.

@Chippies Lol, yes. We've been hear before
@Chippies That is a good point. But, I still much prefer Ubuntu over Windows

Once again, should this be closed as too broad?

android OP

@RPiAwesomeness do you... game? :P

5:34 PM
@Chippies Wish I could. My parents :P
I've played a few here and there on the down-low.

@RPiAwesomeness which is exactly why you like linux :P

@DragonLord I don't see why it should.

you "game" with your OS
your OS is your game

@Chippies lol

Linux can be used to create things like the chromebook. It's awesome and I love it

5:35 PM
@Chippies A) It's more secure B) It's great for programming C) It's customizable

I will never, however, install it at home

imho, linux requires too much work to get anything simple done

Just to name my top 3 reasons

@Chippies If you have a distro like Mint or Elementary OS it can be just as polished as Mac and Windows.

5:36 PM
@Chippies It's gotten a lot better, but it's still annoying.

Oh, @GnomeSlice

@Chippies My old laptop has openSUSE and it took me a while to properly set up the Wi-Fi on the command line

@RPiAwesomeness security at home as a regular user doesn't make much difference b) so I've heard, but I don't really see what makes it better c) can't argue with that

@RPiAwesomeness But as soon as you get to something it doesn't do out of the box, you're on google trying to adjust it and then you either become a linux person or reinstall some other OS.

5:36 PM
I used to use Fedora

I use redhat on my servers

@Chippies There you are wrong. If more people kept their computers secure and updated viruses and worms would have a whole lot harder of a time.

@DragonLord not sure about now, but few years ago, if you didn't have properly supported hardware then running linux was a major pain in the ass

no gui installed

The only reason I haven't installed Windows on my desktop since rage-installing Ubuntu is because I don't feel like buying Windows.

5:37 PM
@RPiAwesomeness that's people being dumb
I haven't had a virus in years

Good point.

and when I did, it was purely my own fault
it was literally "if I run this .exe, I will probably get a virus, but I will do it anyway"
and getting rid of the virus took me ~10 minutes
if people were more educated about computers and security, there would be less talk about how windows is so insecure and everyone gets viruses every day

@Chippies It works, but it was less than intuitive. I tried a whole bunch of commands before I went to the YaST Control Center and set up the networking.

@Chippies Exactly

@SaintWacko What game?

@DragonLord Ascendant

Most people think of Linux as the geek-squad command-line that only nerds want to use. However, it's becoming more and more polished, with easy-to-use and nice looking GUI. But hey, it's all a matter of opinion.

It's amazing

@RPiAwesomeness it really depends on what you want to do with it (I could be wrong, I haven't used linux in few years)

@RPiAwesomeness Still use Windows for ordinary PCs for the most part, but Linux is king when it comes to servers.

5:40 PM
@Chippies Good point

@OrigamiRobot - Do you know anything about the Pokemon TCG?

@DragonLord Yes

if you want to just browse web and listen to music (after you have worked through terminal to get mp3 codec), then linux is simple

@JasonBerkan I played for a long time a long time ago

if you want to do something more serious, you WILL have to eventually get down and dirty in terminal

5:41 PM
I know nothing about it now.

> after you have worked through terminal to get mp3 codec

@RPiAwesomeness It's getting easier to use, but not that many newcomers are willing to use the command line

That's an awful lot of complexity to hand wave away.

@LessPop_MoreFizz which is why I included it in parenthesis :P

@OrigamiRobot OK. It's played at my son's school and he was asking about it, but I have no idea where to even start.

5:43 PM
@JasonBerkan I haven't played since ~2000

Why are roguelikes all the craze today?

I prefer Linux because of the customizability, as I do plenty of programming. Basically put, Linux is best for programming Server's and cross-platform stuff (Vbox for testing in other environments), Mac is best for Graphics/Publishing/Arty stuff, and Windows is best for business and gaming.

@RPiAwesomeness Computers are best for doing anything, and the OS should just stay out of the damn way.
2

@RPiAwesomeness stereotypes all over that last sentence :P

@Chippies True
But, I did say it was simply put.

5:44 PM
the thing with Windows is that there's software for pretty much anything available on it
so while it may not be the best at something, it's great at everything

@OrigamiRobot Off to my LGS!

Only reason it's so popular and used and has so much software for it is because it's cheap and it's everywhere. If Mac was cheaper and Linux had started out slightly better/easier to use, I think MS would have far less grip on the market.

@RPiAwesomeness Don't forget interoperability. Consumers want one platform where they can expect all their software to run.
That's why Windows tablets are so big today--a full Windows experience in the palm of your hand.

@DragonLord True, but if Windows wasn't such a market dominator, I think software would be written more often in cross-platform/cross-device manners.

@RPiAwesomeness that's a lot of extra resources required to do that

5:48 PM
But, like I said. It's all a manner of opinion
@Chippies True, it does.

windows can be customized as well, although not to the same extent as linux

@Chippies Yes. although not to the same extent as linux

@Chippies Lol. I'm talking all the way down into core software and settings.
Anything can be customized, Linux just has the most powerful and most plentiful easy-to-access options.
I think we scared everyone else off....

@RPiAwesomeness I've never had the need to do that in linux, so I'm not 100% sure what exactly you mean by it. Examples please? :)

5:56 PM
Well, changing the kernel for one thing. Can't do that on Windows

@RPiAwesomeness but, why?

@Chippies Well, with Linux, if it's just a simple server or dev environment where you don't need a desktop, you don't even have to install X--and even a 15-year-old laptop with 64 MB of memory could conceivably act as a web server.

explain it to me like I'm 5 :)
@DragonLord for servers - I totally agree, linux is great
it's lightweight and fast and has distros that emphasize on those things

Exactly. Linux can be customized to fit exactly what you want.

you're still at the mercy of software though

5:59 PM
Fast and lightweight? Meet Arch Linux. Good looking, go Mint/Elementary OS.
@Chippies Yes.
It all depends on who develops for what and how

Q: Is collision-ignorance symmetric?

ymbirttIf I'm playing Spectre, Centaur Warrunner, or various other heroes, I can ignore collision on all units, so if I right-click on the other side of a unit then I'll just breeze through to the other side.
