@Yuki Considering rhinos have horrible eyesight and the boar was pretty much sneaking up on it, I think the rhino got startled. You can see it run away in panic after the throw.

Q: Why do you have to re-unlock all story missions?

I unlocked/beat the entire story. My hardcore character died. So I started a new one, got to level 70 (mix between power leveling and bounties). What's with the resurgence in high-difficulty gaming these days? The Souls franchise has become so popular, and I keep seeing new roguelikes coming out lately. What's going on?

Am I doing myself a disservice by not challenging myself in the gaming world?

For example, Dark Souls is all about learning from mistakes and playing to an incredibly high degree of precision. There's virtually no room for error.

I'm now graduating from college magna cum laude. Is there a convincing reason I should hold my gaming skills to the same exacting standards I hold my academics to?

@DragonLord If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. I think for a long while between the nes/snes days and the emergence of the Souls franchise there wasn't a whole lot of this sort of gameplay getting wide releases (in North America anyway).

@Dragon I wouldn't know the cause behind this "resurgence", but the kind of exacting gameplay the Souls series is known for its popular for a number of reasons.

For one, there's always bragging rights. Gamers will forever be claiming to be better than others because of what games they play and difficulty is a common metric.

Secondly, and perhaps the most prevalent, is the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with succeeding in a Souls game. Beating a boss gives a very strong sense of accomplishment. The idea that something is difficult makes victory all the sweeter.

It doesn't hurt that Dark Souls has a surprisingly deep storyline, albeit one that eschews traditional storytelling.

The issue is the gap between "challenging" and "ultra-difficult" I find in many games as well as among games in general.

I personally really enjoyed Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia as a challenging, but not overwhelming, game.

The Dark Souls way of doing things is too harsh for my taste.

As difficult as many people make it out to be, Dark Souls gives you all the tools you need to beat it. Any time I died in Dark Souls, I could see the mistake I made that led to my death.

At no point have I encountered a situation where my death was the fault of the game and not my own mistake.

Dark Souls is tough, but it doesn't have nearly as many "fake difficulty" moments as other games that claim to be "super-hard".
