@MBraedley There is no legal way to get an N64 ROM of a commercial game from that era other than having a copy of the cartridge and ripping out the data yourself.
MAME is irrelevant.
His question wasn't about how to clean up his cartridge rips, it was about how to evaluate the stuff he was downloading off the internet, which is pretty clearly and obviously not being purchased from any legitimate seller, because there is no such thing for the product in question.
To clarify, the backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner (i.e. not the internet) of an authentic game to ensure they have one in the event of damage or destruction of the original.
That's all American law. All I'm saying is that just because it looks like copyright infringement does not mean we get to close it as such. We can still close for other reasons.
@MBraedley No, they aren't a grey area when it comes to their distribution over the internet. They might be a grey area morally, but the law is quite clear.
I'm trying to unlock the Golden Retriever animal class as the Beagle. However, I'm having a really hard time trying to find the boss animal to unlock. I'm in the correct district, I have looked all over the area, but I just cannot find him.
I'm not really interested in arguing about what level of infringement or circumvention might be morally permissible, or might theoretically occur if the rights holder decided to change their mind about what they sell. The facts exist, and there's no reason for us to ignore them.
@MBraedley what the fuck are you even talking about
do you realize how little sense you are making right now
I don't care if his ROMs are legal. I don't care if he's looking for legal ROMs. I care that he's asking for a recommendation. That's why we should close the question.
@MBraedley Alright, case closed. It's fine to discuss legal opinions (legal advice is a no-no, obvuiously), but SE mods aren't lawyers, for all things legal policy related (site, content, or otherwise), we defer to the community managers.
@Krazer I know, I'm just stating my opinion that when we have to option of not playing the copyright card, we should take that option. Copyright can be a sticky mess that we don't want to deal with.
Especially when it's not obvious and clear that copyright infringement did, is, or will take place.
I agree that it's fine to give ppl the benefit of the doubt, but we still need to let users know that these type (copyright-related) of topics are also off-topic
@MBraedley Except that it is obvious and clear, because he's explicitly talking about N64 ROMs, and trying to concoct some magical scenario wherein somebody mightsomehowmagically convince Nintendo to change it's existing distribution policies is pollyannaish and missing the point.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Can you, with 100% assurance, know that Nintendo hasn't in the recent past and won't in the foreseeable future, change it's mind about distributing N64 ROMs, or provide (or license) a way of legally backing up a cartridge ROM? No, you can't.
@MBraedley what happens in the boardroom is irrelevant. If you'd like to counter my statement with a meaningful statement of factual evidence, rather than whacking off to hypotheticals, please do so, otherwise this conversation isn't going to go anywhere.
I'm just saying that the mere possibility of the question being on the up and up means that we should use copyright for a close reason as a last resort. We had other options here that we should have used. Mentioning copyright infringement is a Good Thing, but it isn't why the question should have been closed.
I've noticed lately (maybe the last couple of months), playing as Pyro, that sometimes I'll light a demoman on fire and he doesn't suffer any afterburn. As soon as I stop hitting him with flames, they go out. Is there some new Demoman item or something that is causing this?
@RedRiderX So it'll be a cross between Java and JS code
@RedRiderX Ping the Java endpoint and it'll send down the appropriate css file, but it's up the the JS to get rid of the old. Java side will remember last theme set and include theme css in any future pageloads
So I just finished the playoffs with the Bulls, winning the playoffs.
So now I played a game to start the season, then there's a cut scene at home. My agent tells me there's a KIA deal. Through I already got the deal before the playoffs started... I'm very mad. Here is some information:
