@TildalWave You mean the atoms get confused .... sort-of like getting married, and having a new set of parents?

NASA must immediately cease contact with Russia arstechnica.com/science/2014/04/…
oh, that's no good, it truncated the part of the URL that actually explained the link

@DanHulme hehe yeah you can use [title](url) format if you don't want it truncated
Today's Atlas V DMSP-19 flight profile (to near-polar Sun-synchronous orbit):

Astronaut Karen Nyberg poses for a photograph with an enthusiastic NASA Social attendee following a presentation about her time living, working, and conducting research on the International Space Station. The NASA Social was held on Monday, March 24, 2014 at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Nyberg served as a flight engineer aboard the space station during Expeditions 36 and 37, from May t

T-4 minutes and holding, all looks OK
Stu
Stu
beautiful morning
this is the simplest Atlas-V configuration, yea?
401
14:29
yup, no SRBs
and the small payload fairing
Stu
Stu
RD-180.. such popular engines
probablility of violating weather constraints at zero percent ROFL gotta love military terminology, they can make everything sound like something from cheesy movies
Stu
Stu
haha yea i laughed at that also
L-10 minutes
station poll complete all go for flight
countdown resumes at T-4 minutes
T-2 minutes
Stu
Stu
14:45
what do they mean when they say "securing" fuel componenets?
no idea, prolly cutting the umbilical pressure?
liftoff
Stu
Stu
yea that's all i could think of
shines really bright on the early morning skies
would be cool if they mentioned where was that downrange cam positioned, looked like a bit from the side, possibly sea-based platform
Stu
Stu
yea. there are a group of islands just south of the launch complex as well
San Miguel and Santa Rossa. although they are a little East of the trajectory.
could be, or one of those gyro-stabilized trackers that they have
Stu
Stu
14:55
i wonder if Vandenburg AFB ever hires civilians
or one of these:

Am I too late?Missed the launch? :D Is there a link?
Stu
Stu
oooh thats the gyro stabalized tracker. good call, they probably did have one of those out there
what kind of drone is that?
@MonaAlexa you just missed it, the link is the first in the starred wall on the right, they'll prolly repeat it now
or scroll up a bit
@Stu dunno, I just googled for gyro-stabilized gimbal cam and that one popped up lol
Stu
Stu
lol way to harness the power of the internet
okay back to work. see you for next launch.
14:59
wanted to find that one they use on ships
gotta love those scripted and rehearsed "what are your feeling on todays launch" questions
That's all folks, next one scheduled for today is Arianespace Soyuz 2-1a from Guiana Space Center in Kourou, with our event starting at 20:40 GMT (4:40 p.m. EDT)

Live stream for the launch of Arianespace Soyuz rocket deploying ESA's Sentinel 1A satellite is now available on Arianespace TV
well, it is available but the broadcast starts in 13 minutes ... there's some easy listening pijama music playing tho :P
Stu
Stu
aaahhh yes elevator jazz
something spacex and arianespace have done right lol
I just came here for the jazz
I keep hoping the beat will match the numbers flicking over on the clock, but unfortunately not
my CDO is not assuaged
@Stu space elevator jazz!
Stu
Stu
if a space elevator is ever built they better install it with some smooth jazz
thanks for catching that great pun
@Stu When returning to Earth on it, I'd want Megadeth - specifically, their track "High Speed Dirt"
(I'm really not a jazz person...at all. I can just about cope with blues-jazz when it errs on the side of blues)
Stu
Stu
20:39
oh man thats such a good idea.. honestly, whenever i am on a plane with a lot of turbulence, i just turn up some metal and everything feels great
\m/ \m/
Stu
Stu
im going to check out high speed dirt right now
@Stu either case, that music's gonna play 20 years after we all stop laughing :)
Stu
Stu
hopefully forever after
until the sun bursts
oooh - Jazz gone. Stern lady speaking. No like.
Stu
Stu
20:42
better get it on a golden disk and fling it into the universe
they're really jazzing it up now with audio
@TildalWave I wish she's shut up and let us hear music or spacecraft
@RoryAlsop It's French, launching a Russian rocket, from South America, trying to speak English ... give them a break! :P
Thank goodness - 110 seconds to go
yay we're live
20:50
Pop music now
OK now you tell me, doesn't that hostess look like Julianne Moore?
I don't know who that is
the actress
Magnolia, Big Lebowski, Hannibal, The Forgotten,...
@TildalWave now you have the picture up - yes I agree (but of those films the only one I know is the Dude)
and I thought that all Rorys know all gingers :)
T-10 sec.
cameraman was a bit too optimistic expecting it too soon past those clouds lol
Stu
Stu
21:04
haha i was thinking the same thing.. its like when a plane goes behind a building, you expect it much sooner
did he just say he and his friends are expecting? :))
pretty cool, you don't get to see a Soyuz launch from Kazakhstan so good as here from French Guiana
Stu
Stu
yea, saw launches from two beautiful palces today with (mostly) clear skies during the day
tomorrow is another one, Indian PSLV it should be nice enough but that's one fast rocket, it'll just shoot out of sight
@TildalWave so 4km/s after 4 minutes isn't fast?
:-)
@RoryAlsop it's fast but these rockets fly with slow ascent profile compared to PSLV, you'll see tomorrow
from Kourou maybe the small Vega launchers also have faster ascent
pretty cool graphics
