@Utkarsh Yup. I'm a monster. The sooner you recognise that, the less surprised you'll be.
I can prove olli is an elephant!
@Oli something new this time The Too Long; Didn't Read version..., why not TL;DR? askubuntu.com/a/436877/184942
@Oli really? then why others are not suspended for deleting their two messages?
Oli
Oli
@AdityaPatil The last time I wrote TL;DR, there was a 50-message long conversation in the comments about the phrase. I thought I'd play it safe.
Good afternoon everybody,
14:04
@oli But as far as I remember, it was to long; don't read that time
@Kiwy and what a lovely afternoon it is!
@Rinzwind even more lmovely when you play gabrielecirulli.github.io/2048 at work ;-)
Mods suspend us for deleting our two messages? Ridiculous!
Oli
Oli
@Utkarsh I'll refer you back the monster comment. And also because deleting huge batches of messages (not just two) is something you have done before multiple times. You have been warned about it at least seventy three thousand and one times now. You were lucky to get the last warning.
And again, monster.
And if that's something you're unhappy with, you don't have to be in here. You can go and get banned (again) by another mod from another site in their chat rooms.
@Kiwy 128 :(
14:08
Meh! Using the Ignore button
@Rinzwind yeah not that good, but the skills come with lot's of pratice
@Kiwy patience? That what you call it now :)
@terdon strange to have you in two chat :D
@Kiwy 256 :D
@Rinzwind I think I get once two 512 but never manage to merge them
14:14
What is DistUtilsExtra.auto?
@Kiwy damn this is hard
thanks for the waste of time >:)
@Rinzwind you're welcome
@MinatoNamikaze Sorry if I disturbed you
@Utkarsh Relax. You didn't :P
14:17
@MinatoNamikaze Since when, you're on AU?
@Utkarsh when I was 12 :P
O.o
by the way, I am going to delete my account in a week
2
@Utkarsh why's that ?
because I'm wasting a lot of time here.
@Utkarsh it depends what you mean by loosing time, I'm loosing time also but learn so much things
14:21
:)
@Kiwy for example??
@Kiwy I was learning some French the other day.
how to use some command how posix works
cross platform command, but it's true that I'm more active on Unix & Linux
> what is your personal opinions
@Braiam misread
14:24
@Kiwy Great! but I think Learning Ubuntu is useless. Waste of time
it's not that good and probably deserve a bit more clarity
@Braiam maybe a on hold to get more details
@Utkarsh learning Ubuntu and learning anything is important
AU is like a Drug which is good at first, then it is addictive
@Kiwy I wish i could have learnt make Ubuntu instaled of learning to use ubuntu
@Braiam you shouldn't it's bad for health ;D
this question is now legit
but does belong to picture and photography SE
Good Night.Bye Bye.
14:40
@AdityaPatil good night (though I'm in the middle of the afternoon here ) :D
@AdityaPatil Good Night
@Kiwy Good Afternoon to you!
@Kiwy I just ended with 2x 256 and a 512 :P
@Rinzwind that's better :-) @Utkarsh hello
@Braiam crossposted? tsk. Anyway, it's impossible
where would the info come from?
@Kiwy again 512 but when I reach that I run out of spaces fast _O-
top says 4556 points is my best score :D
14:55
@terdon well jpeg wikipedia explanation, jpeg describe one layer not several so you need to complete the layer which can only be made by a human
there is such a thing as being TOO curious
http://askubuntu.com/questions/436910/what-is-the-significance-of-permission-of-etc
@Rinzwind hehehehe
indeed :D
This is why boys and girls, there are virtual machines ;) — Braiam 8 secs ago
winks @terdon
15:11
hmm does Unity require sudo to work?
Nope.
I'm guessing he did not run what he said he ran
probably chmod -R
apparently not @terdon
Indeed, in fact I'm getting the same issue in the VM. I'm guessing things have changed permissions in the $HOME, checking now
15:19
did you do an snapshoot?
@Braiam nah, got nothing I give a damn about there, I'll just reinstall if needed but it really shouldn't be necessary
@Dan The tour is the about page, which is already on the Community page.
Oy! How'd he do this?
@Braiam for me the Ubuntu Desktop versions fail to install with VirtualBox.. and usually for tests I used to use live USB with file persistence, but yeah err this time.. @terdon no I didn't do a recursive chmod.. — rusty 11 mins ago
Can we use two @ in a comment now? That sued to give an error
spoke too soon
@terdon awesomesauce :P
15:35
Damn, this is really weird, I'm getting the same behavior as the OP and the permissions on /etc are correct, I have no root-owned files or folders in my $HOME and dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-desktop changes nothing. WTF?
Hmm, OK, enabling unity plugin seems to have solved it but what the hell happened here?
grrrr, DAMN this global menu crap! No Alt+click to move and no menus in ccsm can't exit the damn thing.
Anyone know how I can disable these Windows style : Ubuntu experienced an internal error messages? Do I need to remove apport?
@terdon disable apport?
@Braiam Is it a service?
83
Q: How do I enable or disable Apport?

jokerdinoThe system crash dialog is annoying me, how can I turn it off? I'd also like to know how to turn it back on just in case I need it to report a problem.

Thanks
@terdon yup
15:41
What's the window decorator in Unituy? gtk-window-decorator crashes and so does emerald (or whatever the compiz one is called these days)
imo, should be the unity shell + compiz, but heck I don't know anymore
unity is for me like a giant blackbox
Yeah
Back when I was using compiz on gnome, I could choose between gtk-window-decorator and emerald, neither seems to work on unity, must be an internal function
OK, this is a bug, toggling /etc permissions should not break the system like this
tried to kill lightdm?
@Braiam rebooted various times
Hmm, OK, it has something to do with the specific user, created a new user and it works fine
now, why the hell would changing things in /etc do this? Pretty sure it happened before I logged in so no /etc/profile issues or anything like that...
OK, I'm going to break the new user and try again :)
@terdon and I'm the masochist?
15:51
@Braiam that's what VMs are for and I'm curious now
:)
@terdon you kind of remembered me this one stackoverflow.com/a/234152/792066
@Braiam lol
Man, I really don't want to have to look through an strace of unity....
afraid of what you will find?
@terdon not that bad :P
@MinatoNamikaze I am assuming it'll be huge for something so complicated
16:27
yea, new graphics for my quad-deskotp!
can you tell I like asus?

Q: Is a UDP server written in Mac going to work on Ubuntu?

Walter WhiteI need to create a UDP server and I only have access to Mac right now. However it will be tested in Ubuntu later on. Is it going to work in Ubuntu if it's written in C? What libraries should I avoid?

17:16
i'm going to answer one of my dangerous question.
But no current , laptop battery charge seems to be low. :-)
@Braiam yay! Figured it out (kinda):
0
A: What is the significance of permission of `/etc`?

terdonRight, I tried this (on a VM :-)) and got the same behavior you describe. I changed the permissions on /etc, and rebooted and since I had configured my system to log me in automatically, it attempted to log me in directly and failed. I don't know enough about Unity's internals to be understand...

i had done a major edit.
@terdon meh, I figured it out too... without even installing Unity :P
@Braiam yeah, that's easy to say :)
@Braiam have you actually figured it out? What caused it'? Which files? And for what reason?
@Braiam you're not saying anything. How exactly did you "figure it out" then? :P
17:36
@terdon my guess is that unity start iterating over a db when login, it fails since previous iteration wasn't closed properly (is the most reasonable when you think about craziness of unity)
@Braiam why would iterating a db change anything? This is almost certainly a owner/group issue. Remember that the problem persisted after /etc was accessible again so changes were made to files in $HOME
Sounds to me like you didn't figure anything out and were just blowing air :P
@terdon the issue starts when unity fails due incorrect permissions in the /etc, it crash horribly and doesn't clean up after itself
@Braiam ah, no, not at all.
I can see changed ownership when I try, I think the problem is mapping user->uid and group ->gid but couldn't figure out the details
I really doubt UNity is that buggy, it would be trivial to clean up and anyway no clean up is necessary unless changes were taking place
@terdon keep believing ;)
Remember that unity loads afterwards, the problem was things like settings being forgotten (whicih implies what I said above) and that the decorations were missing
Anyway, the bottom line is you have no idea why it happens :)
17:41
and now I need some system to install unity, make it crash and examine the diff of the files
@Braiam there you go, then you can claim to have figured things out
I did that by the way :)
@terdon I'm so lazy :/
lol
Then don't go claiming to have figured things out when you haven't lazy boy
on the third hand I got perfect marks for an exam I didn't study for :D
@MinatoNamikaze er, bacon flavored non meat containing substance?
17:46
@Mateo if that would be the case, she would say "my favorite flavor is bacon" not "food"
but what I know about english!
@Braiam or the name of the alternate food, like coconut bacon
18:00
@Mateo ew.
That's just nasty
@Braiam um, yeah, you and just about everyone else he at some point or another, we're geeks, that's what we do.
lol
@terdon have you? I have yet to try that...too much of an over-achiever/perfectionist I guess :P
Yeah, but for subjects I like obviously :)
sigh This room is always so active compared to the RPi ones :(
sends @RPiAwesomeness to The Bridge
18:06
lol :)
yeah...that's a totally different world over there
so, anyone want to guess how to use the shutdown without dropping to tty after doing this on ubuntu? webupd8.org/2013/12/install-steamos-session-in-ubuntu.html maybe it is gnome stuff that is missing?
I think The Bridge should be considered an SE site of its own, not connected to any other site ... heavens

Should I vote to close an older question as duplicate with a new one? the newer question has a good answer.

Q: How to run a script before shutting down my laptop?

NirmikI want a script to run before my laptop shuts down for disabling networking. How can I do this? Assign a "shut down script or app that executes just before shutdown?

18:48
@Braiam feel better? :P
If you're sure of that, then the problem is likely to be something like @Braiam suggested in chat, that Unity died while setting something up and did not clean up well after itself, a clear bug. If you still have the files, try running a few diffs, they might give more info. By the way, I also tried this with a newly created user, made no changes to his configuration, and was able to log in with no problem after correcting the /etc permissions. So, it is almost certainly dconf/gconf or compiz that's being screwed with. — terdon 17 secs ago
@souravc yes! Absolutely, the answer there is complete crap, no explanation and a link to an external resource. You should actually flag that as not an answer as well.
@terdon double ping is the worst ping :/ even comments pasted in chat pings me
@Braiam shit, sorry, I didn't realize you'd also get pinged by the contents of the comment
meh, time to go... another exam D:
19:12
@Braiam good luck!
19:37
hej - that's new - 20 CV reviews and no audit ;-)
19:51

20:03
fiver@LALA-LAND:~$ python /media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master/itunes2rhythm.py
File "/media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master/itunes2rhythm.py", line 8

20:17
ok got htat figred out, but still have another error, if anyone is around I could really use some help
20:31
@Mitch you closed this question as off-topic... but we do accept questions when developing on Ubuntu...
I know, but I think this would be suited better in Stack Overflow.
@KalamalkaKid the readme says it was upped to py3k not py2.7. might work with python3 only
20:59
ok thank you.What i did was go to Synaptic Package manager and install the alter versions of Python. How do I exectute teh script with the newer version?
@hbdgaf ok thank you.What i did was go to Synaptic Package manager and install the alter versions of Python. How do I exectute teh script with the newer version?
python3 whatever-script-uri
also, substituting teh for the doesn't make you cooler. it's reserved for memes and sarcasm mostly now... just a note.
lol i cant type sorry
could you put an example of that code. I dont understand the uri part
wait i think i got it
@hbdgaf ok now I am getting the error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master/itunes2rhythm.py", line 285, in <module>
exec(open(sys.argv[0][:-2]+"conf").read(), cfg)
File "<string>", line 20
iLib=""/media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/Library.xml""
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
so change it to single quotes...
i'm done troubleshooting that script though. it's not useful to me at all.
ok, its jsut that I dont knwo anything about this stuff, and was here to ask for help. Have a good day
I'ld ask the script author on github. They might not know it's broken, or might have a specific git pull that works for you to use.

I am trying to execute this script with Python3

https://github.com/guillier/itunes2rhythm

using this command: python3 /media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master/itunes2rhythm.py

I am getting the error:

Traceback (most recent call last): File "/media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/itunes2rhythm-master/itunes2rhythm.py", line 285, in exec(open(sys.argv[0][:-2]+"conf").read(), cfg) File "", line 20 iLib=""/media/trunk/SOUNDS/itunes/Library.xml"" ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax

could someone explain what needs to be done to execute this script properly?
22:04
i fixed teh double quotes but am still getting the error:

Unknown drive: localhost/C:

I dont see this line anywhere
wait i see it now inside the lybrary XML file
22:38
@KalamalkaKid I recommend you to copy stuff to your $HOME instead, since NTFS permissions can cause problem
i think the problem is that the library XML file has references to files that are in different directories now. I guess all those have to be modified
