How big are Wii U "retail" digital games? Usually 1 DVD or less or are they dual layer?

@BenBrocka Wii/WiiU games can be dual-layer.

@BenBrocka I have a 300 GB partition on my external, and with...~3 dozen games, I'm only using 100 GB.

Heck, even Super Smash Bros. Brawl was dual-layer, and that was an early Wii game.

user15026
This stupid application is telling me something isnt a valid date and I didn't even enter the date it says isnt valid

I know they can be, but it was pretty rare on Wii. But the Wii was also SD so I'm not sure the typical size of Wii U stuff

7:03 PM
Actually, are WiiU games even DVDs? I assumed they went to Blu-Ray like everyone else did.

@Frank I actually have an external but I'm not sure I want to use it for the Wii U for reliability reasons (it's an old drive and I don't like mechanicals anyway)

@BenBrocka I think most are not dual layer. Brawl was the first, and the internet gives me a list of, like, 9 total

this would also be a lot faster if the review's speeds are representative

@BenBrocka Which is fair. I'm just saying, they don't take up much space.

@Unionhawk oops, I meant Wii U

7:05 PM
@BenBrocka Ok, that, I don't know.

Never thought I'd be the one making that mistake

@BenBrocka That, I don't know. Hmm.

I don't plan to download much, but I have Nintendoland digital already and a few digital/VC games (but VC are super tiny)
I mostly wanted something of decent size I can easily back up myself...since the wii u doesn't really let you

Incidentally, it seems that the WiiU's discs are single-layer BRDs. Possibly not, but they have the same storage size (25GiB)

Well damn. gg Canada

7:09 PM
According to Wikipedia anyway

@Powerlord they're blu ray?! wow I thought they were still DVDs

> The Wii U Optical Disc is a proprietary high-density optical disc, developed by Nintendo and Panasonic, and serves as the physical medium for Wii U games. The format is very similar in physical design and specifications as the Blu-ray Discs, sporting a capacity of 25 GB per layer.
So, that'll bump to 50GB if they ever release a dual-layer disc.

Oh, it's their own weird format. Didn't want to give Sony money I guess. Or be able to play blu rays

Take that @Unionhawk!

See, I was totally going to go all "Take that @Fluttershy @Wipqozn", but now it doesn't work.

7:11 PM
I can probably survive with 128GB for a while. I don't think I'll get many digital games that have physical versions unless their on sale...and that's...yeah it's Nintendo

1-0? What is this, soccer?

Hey guys. I recently discovered "Aarklash: Legacy" and absolutely love the gameplay. It reminds me of the "Dragon Age" series, but I actually like the 3rd person view better. Have there been any other games recently like this that I may have missed? It is a squad-based tactical RPG. I browsed the chronological list of TBT and TBS on wikipedia, but that is not an all-inclusive list and I am hoping some other lovers of the genre can point me towards more great / similar titles.

@BenBrocka I guess I'm not surprised. While the Wii used DVDs, the GC used a proprietary format.

7:12 PM
<-- not a big fan of TRPGs, so won't be able to give recommendations about them.

Go Sweden.

@Powerlord oh that reminds me I should rip my Wii games too

@LessPop_MoreFizz Go Finland!

Poor GC, I wonder how much better it might have done with normal full size DVDs. Maybe not much.

@BenBrocka Well, it'd have offered more storage space for one.

Speaking of GC, why doesn't the WiiU have virtual console support for it?

GC is such a great system.

@Powerlord I mean sales/third party-wise. like the n64 it's tech specs were better but the storage format was worse

It seems weird Ninty releasing the sequel to Luigi's Mansion last year when their current console couldn't even play the original.

@Powerlord They didn't even have retail digital games until this gen. They might be thinking about it, but I'm not optimistic for that happening this gen
Also if they do it, GC VC games will cost $30 and be released once every 4 months

7:16 PM
@GnomeSlice is the link SFW?

@Sconibulus Yeah.
I think

@BenBrocka I'm still not convinced the N64's tech specs were better than the PSX's.

@Powerlord The games were better though ;)

@Sconibulus That means you should probably wait until you get home

@Powerlord IIRC they were in some ways at the least. Seemed to have higher poly counts. But lower storage size meant games couldn't have as many textures/audio tracks, and definitely not the FMVs the PSX loved

7:18 PM
@Sconibulus Keep in mind, he does not know when something is or is not SFW.

@OrigamiRobot Eh, it doesn't look bad

@OrigamiRobot Very funny.

I mean, I'm not super interested in it, but nothing's obviously going to get you yelled at, unless they're watching close enough to read everything, in which case you're screwed anyway by all the stuff we say on the bridge

@GnomeSlice just because a thing is a bundle does not mean you are contractually obligated to provide a link to it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz You don't know, he said he got a contracting gig earlier

@LessPop_MoreFizz So?

@fredley Amazing.

What is that?

7:21 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes he is.

And why?

Achievement earning Bridge
Pro much

It's right there, section 3a. Didn't you read the contract?

Bridge It is better though.

Bridge Constructor sure looks better based on that gif.

7:23 PM
@GnomeSlice I like how the video for that goes "Realistic Physics System!" Then promptly shows a truck exploding at the slightest touch

@SaintWacko :P

Does anyone else in here actively play MtG?

@SaintWacko It said "realistic physics", not "trucks filled with something that isn't nitroglycerin"

@fredley I remember trying to make a jump ramp for one of these bridge building simulators. It didn't take.

@OrigamiRobot I inactively play it, if that helps

7:25 PM
@Sconibulus Fair enough

@Sconibulus I'm looking for people to invite to a trade by mail website.

@GraceNote In Bridge It, one of the challenges was to build a drawbridge so a boat could pass under it. I couldn't get that to work so I just made a big rounded bridge the boat could fit under. The cars would all jump off the top.

@GraceNote I'm not sure trucks can reach speeds necessary to ramp themselves

@BenBrocka It was a train I had to build for actually

@GraceNote...

7:26 PM
@GraceNote Well there's your problem

It almost made it except the caboose didn't, and so it dragged all the rest of it down into the sea.

@GraceNote I'm laughing out loud at things I can't even see, on the bus.

Oh you're one of THOSE bus people

@BenBrocka Grace Note made me one of those people. I am not to blame here.

7:28 PM
@GraceNote They never went fast enough for that.

@GnomeSlice (back) That's arguable, too. Nearly all of the N64's good games are by Nintendo themselves (4?) or Rare (4-5?)

@Frank That's what giving them speed with a downslope is for.

@Powerlord bomberman though

Pontifex had a one way bridge, though. It used the train weight to lever it to the other side.

@BenBrocka Either of the Bomberman games for N64 were good?
I don't think I played them.

7:31 PM
@Powerlord Quest 64 QED

I mean, I can name all the good N64 games without even thinking about it... Super Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zelda: Majora's Mask*, Super Smash Bros, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye*, and Perfect Dark*.

I've heard bomberman hero was great, bomberman 64 definitely was, especially multiplayer

Whoops, missed Donkey Kong 64.

@Powerlord Diddy Kong Racing

@StrixVaria I would have mentioned that but opinions are split. For it's time I thought it was great

7:32 PM
@StrixVaria Best game ever made

Quest 64 was mostly a joke because everyone else hated it (although I loved it as a kid), but DKR is actually really good.

and those *s you see in that list are the ones that despite me listing them as good games are one that I think shouldn't be on that list.

There were lots of great N64 games
Hot Wheels Turbo Racing
Glover
Paperboy
DKR

@Powerlord Perfect Dark was revolutionary.

Banjo Kazooie

7:32 PM
Though the very novel leveling system was also a very easy to totally fuck up your abilities basically permanently

@StrixVaria How?

AI bots that didn't suck.

Blast Corps

What did Perfect Dark have that its contemporaries (which include the likes of Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament) didn't have?

@StrixVaria those Goldeneye ones were classic though. Complete idiots. Looked like it too

7:34 PM
(Helps if I mention the latest Unreal game there)

@BenBrocka I really liked the leveling system in that game.

Speaking of which, the bots in Unreal Tournament were actually pretty brutal.

Quest 64 was one of the only (if not the only) N64 games I actually finished.
@Powerlord Did they have vengeance bots and peace bots and such?
The multiplayer options in Perfect Dark were seriously incredible.
I'm pissed off, now, thinking back to it, that no other game has done it.

@StrixVaria Same, but you're all but required to get Water, and IIRC wind/fire aren't all that good to deal damage with compared to rock

@StrixVaria You realize that means nothing to me without context?

7:35 PM
@BenBrocka Plus Earth gets a spell that makes you invincible for 2 turns, so you can just be invincible forever by casting it every other turn.
@Powerlord So you're judging the game without knowing about it? :P
(I haven't played Quake 2 or Unreal Tournament, for reference.)
In Perfect Dark, you could set up bots in multiplayer matches to play in specific ways.
Judgment Bots would try to kill the current leader, Vengeance Bots would try to kill whoever killed them, Peace Bots would try to disarm you and run away.
There were like 8 different "personalities"
You could also set bots to a variety of difficulty levels, from Meat to Dark.
Dark bots literally cheated by walking through walls (only when you couldn't see them).

@StrixVaria Worms lets you do that too. Though the biggest difference I've noticed is the ratio of moronic:impossibly good shots they make

@StrixVaria Bot difficulty levels is nothing new. I don't recall if the bots in UT had settings like the personalities though.

One of my favorite modes was to have 7 meat peace bots and 1 dark vengeance bot.

(It's been a long time since I played UT99)

Bots in UT have difficulty, dunno about personality

7:38 PM
You tried to kill all the bots, but if you accidentally killed the vengeance bot then he killed you over and over and over.
If you had 3-4 players and those bots you it was the best mayhem.
@Powerlord Way to ignore everything else I said.
Perfect Dark just let you customize so many things about multiplayer.
You could choose which specific weapons spawned on the map.
You could make melee attacks into "tornado fists" where you attacked like every other frame for massive damage.
There were a whole bunch of different objective modes.
Lots of other games have done these kinds of things since, but Perfect Dark was the first one to have all of them.
I have no idea about the campaign; I honestly never played it.
The multiplayer was amazing, though.

@Yuki No idea

@Lazers What.

7:42 PM
@RedRiderX Tempted to get the Zubmarine.

@Yuki Ooh that sounds nice.

@Lazers Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

user43095
Guys, what flavor of Linux do you use?

user15026
@Lazers Welp, it's on topic XD

I know that UT supported mutators that changed gameplay in various ways, including affecting which weapons were available in maps... I think some of the stock ones included swapping the normal impact hammer melee weapons with a one-shot kill version.

7:42 PM
@JeffreyLin Windows.

FIRST

UT was also the game that introduced the Redeemer, a remote control missile you could pilot around... and had the Dr. Strangelove mutator which allowed you to ride the missile around.

Oh geez, 20x Labour, 7x Lens, and 30x Contraptions.

@Powerlord The mutators were fantastic, especially that you could make your own

That's... really effin' expensive.

7:44 PM
the shock combo instagib rifle was a fun one

@BenBrocka I forget, could you run multiple mutators at once?

@Yuki Did you finish Bravely Default?

@StrixVaria I'm on Chapter 4 out of... 6, I think.

An ITG that follows the rules? We should upvote it to 50!

@Powerlord Pretty sure you could

7:45 PM
I should get EUIV

user43095
@Unionhawk I have the urge to link this to your response.

@Fluttershy You should! And the answer, too!

@Fluttershy Just because it's a valid question doesn't mean it's a good question.
@Yuki Still holding your interest?

@StrixVaria Yeah.

@JeffreyLin You asked what I use. Alternative answer would be "not linux"

user43095
7:47 PM
@Unionhawk Windows is not a flavor of Linux.

@Yuki Going for the Zubmarine?

@SaintWacko Yeah.

user15026
@Fluttershy It will happen :(

@Yuki I've run into a few nice uses for it
I have the Yacht, though

Unreal Tournament's strength was the fact that players could mod it. I have no idea if UT had personalities as such, but someone probably made a mod for it to add them.

7:48 PM
@SaintWacko Oh, you can get more than one boat?

Hell, I don't even remember which mods got shipped in the 4 bonus packs for it.

@StrixVaria I know.

@Yuki No

@BenBrocka Oh, they did the copycats' work for them (but interesting, smartassery aside)

7:52 PM
Grrr, I want to burn svnkit and/or svn's devs. Turns out that while my desktop uses SVN 1.8 to build, our build environments are still on 1.7... we use a maven plugin to fetch the build number to show on our dev and qa environments. Problem is that svnkit (and svn itself?) libraries only support the working directory version they were built for.

Q: Is there a good replacement for the Force Wrench in Monster?

JimmyOne of my staple items in FTB Unleashed was the Force Wrench. For those who don't know, it allowed you to pickup items without loosing their contents. (Chests would still have their inventory, tanks would keep their fuel, and you could move spawners.) FTB Monster doesn't include the Dartcraft mo...

So, either I check in a change that works for my local build environment and breaks our deployment environment, rollback my own environment to svn 1.7, or make a change to a configuration file and never check it in.
Seriously, what kind of lib doesn't support older versions?

@Powerlord Going from what my co-workers always do, the first choice is the correct choice.

@Powerlord Option 3 is best option

@Sconibulus Which is what I've already done now.

8:01 PM
configuration files probably shouldn't be in source control anyway

Still, it just annoys me that the library barfs on versions that are both newer and older than the version that the library is for.
@Sconibulus It's not a configuration file, it's a build rules file.

given that they can have machine-specific information
oh... that could be different

It's a Maven .pom file if you're familiar with Maven.

@Powerlord this is why everyone's horrified to update their SVN here. Haven't needed to anyway

Q: How do I continue once I beat level 7-7?

JoeI am playing Donkey Kong Country Returns and I'm on level 7/7. When I beat that world it won't open a road to the new stage instead it opens a road that backtracks to level 7/5. Why? How do I continue?

8:05 PM
@Yuki Good to know. I'm near the end of Chapter 2 (I presume) and it's pretty much a faceroll through every fight.

7-7 already? jeez

@Ullallulloo Anyway, no it's not. It's supposed to be written as two separate words. Origami Robot

8:37 PM
@OrigamiRobot Why isn't your username like that then?

Because I don't follow the rules.
Why is our room description so dumb?
> Third rule, if a joke says "stop" or goes limp, taps out hammertime.
What language is that?

@OrigamiRobot It's @badp language, I think
Feb 18 at 19:35, by badp
room topic changed to The Bridge: General Arqade chat room. First rule is, we do not talk about games. Second rule is, we do not. talk. about. games. Not that sense-make is a requirement around here.

I am going to cry

@Yuki Disaster?

I'm crying

@SaintWacko I don't have disasters enabled because this is my first town and I suck at citybuilders.

@Sconibulus Yeah.

no idea :)

Well, I only lost about 7 dudes and I'm on the road to recovery.

@Mana It's specifically the third rule that is dumb and doesn't make sense.

Actually, let me zoom in a bit...
