This semester in school is going to suck

lifehacker.com broken for anyone else?

Bob
@MichaelFrank looks fine here

Yea, working now.. weird. Was getting a Kinja: Origin not found error.

DDo you use lifehacker much?

Not anymore. The new layout drives me insane.
It used to be my go-to for web browsing.

hhaha

Ugh. I need a new SSD for my Mac. Any recommended brands/models these days?

a fast one!

-_-
Mine's already so slow, anything's fine :P
I only get 150MB/s read speeds.

haha =p I'd help you out if I had any idea

9:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek, @Bob? ---^

firefox ranks as bad =p
but the rating scheme isn't that great

Ah steam finally rolls out family sharing

Bob
@slhck "only" -_-

@Bob Well, it's one of the first-gen SSDs shipped by Apple in 2011. I'm sure it could be much better by now.
Also I'm running out of space on 120 GB. With hardly anything installed.

if it's a first gen SSD I'm surprised it's still kicking.. except with arthritis or something

9:33 AM
Yeah, I'm glad the thing is still running. I need the MacBook at least for three weeks, then it can crash, I don't care

Bob
@slhck I generally recommend a SSD for caching only, not for permanent storage.
But in a laptop you don't have that many options.
Hm.
Intel is known for its stability.

How much have you read/written on it?

Bob
OCZ is cheap, but has a reputation for dying.
Sandisk is supposedly pretty good. But I don't know much else in the realm of SSDs :P

@ekaj How would I find out?

crystal disk info

9:36 AM
@ekaj Windows :P

you're running Winders?

No, the program's for Windows.

Q: Disable Windows 8 auto ending programs

MegaRodeonI often lose my unsaved work because of Windows 8's stupid feature that ends unresponsive programs once the dialog box, "This program is not responding" appears. Are there any options I can disable it?

Doesn't he have bigger problems to worry about if his apps keep crashing?
stupid feature > stupid user

I'd assume so, yeah

Bob
@Gowtham ... ... ...
Yea, ok, couple of 10 year olds on there. Which is probably why so many servers apparently ban swearing.

Q: IS website necessty for sale online products?

Raj KishoreHi i am Raj Kishore from India and my question is that is website necessity for sale online products? Thanks to all, Raj

srsly

lol

I mean, he can sell them through SOAP web services if he wants
Or IRC. Or via e-mail even.

usenet
or a list of wifi networks that describe his product
but buying that many APs would be a lot more expensive than a website

11:30 AM
A bulletin board system, or BBS, is a computer system running software that allows users to connect and log into the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, a user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users, either through email, public message boards, and sometimes via direct chatting. Many BBSes also offer on-line games, in which users can compete with each other, and BBSes with multiple phone lines often provide chat rooms, allowing users to interact with each other. That's what I would suggest

Bob
did you get yours? I forgot

@Bob Ouch

11:47 AM
I've not had any issues with mine so far
Also, I do wonder if the guy who linked the similar pen actually has one - the design is pretty simple
and apparently IPG is a pretty common name, and richardspens.com/?page=ref/ttp/ipg_nibs.htm look nothing like the one on mine
@slhck I'm a big fan of samsungs - though the mac part might make it slightly more complex
ahh, they support OS X

2:27 PM
@Bob can one safely merge upstream zirak bot?

I need a way to make a windows 7 system randomly unstable

/me would flip a bit in kernel.dll :D

lol
fortunately the people who will see this arn't computer savvy
lol. My parents want me to "break" our main system
I want it to be believable tho
so I want random, maybe BSODs every 20-30 minutes or so...

there's an option to make BSOD at key command (ala sysrq), maybe you can hack something

yeah
I've got until sunday

2:46 PM
@jokerdino 94 commits?! wow.. (Just saw your pull request to Zirak's)

@ekaj Please don't help out spammers…

@allquixotic No no no. That was a mess
I got the whole thing in reverse.

I always mess up pull requests or my own repo. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Instead of pulling from upstream, I sent them a pull request. -.-

Oh

2:50 PM
how bad would pulling a cooling fan be?

@jokerdino lol
are any of kitfox's commits applicable to upstream?

I don't know. Maybe

Q: Convincingly "breaking" a system for a non technical user

Journeyman GeekFor various reasons out of scope for SU I've been tasked with temporarily disabling one of my own systems. I have full admin control and own this system. Its running windows 7 SP1. I want to do this right - something believable, deniable and artistic. Ideally I'd like something I can trigger of...

I now officially hate myself am on the road to being a bad dog ;p

Q: How to mess up a PC running Windows 7?

pHelicsOk, so for my PC class I have to find 3 hacks that would mess up the lab's PC. Me and my partner are going to mess up the PC and then another team will try to fix it. The system on it is Windows 7. Anything that would stop the normal use or render the PC useless works. The conditions: Can't op...

one of my favorite threads :P
@JourneymanGeek :P

@Gowtham: the tricky thing here is, I can't have it attributed to me
else I'd just unplug something and feign ignorance
hm, we need the blog room unfrozen again
yanno what's the worst part? I've actually considered doing this on purpose before.

@rlemon haven't git pulled with master lately
@rlemon @jokerdino made this pull request by accident, but maybe some of these commits could be useful in master, I have no idea github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot/pull/162
@KitFox does a lot of work on the chatbot apparently, but I have no idea what percentage of that is ELU-specific
merging upstream anything that we might want to have as a wider community (here and in JS chat) would be nice

It's mostly random stuff we added. A lego feature, Pinky and the Brain, parent user look up.

parent user lookup sounds extremely useful

3:29 PM
We thought so.

the "silly" ones I'll let rlemon and his JS guys decide whether they want that, but I want parent user lookup :D

I took out a lot of stuff, but then didn't commit properly, so I think most of it stayed it.
I was using it to learn git and practice javascript.
But I've been too busy lately to do much with her.

@allquixotic Let's not talk about that.

Did all my changes get overwritten?

@KitFox your changes where? in your repo?

3:34 PM
@KitFox Ask Matt

Oh. Well, no, some of them are there. But she used to respond when I refreshed her and she doesn't anymore.
Never mind. I should be crunching data anyway.

maybe some of those changes were gone

I'll look at it tonight.

@KitFox cya

@KitFox I'm going to bake the un one box into our bot with a command to toggle the functionality on and off
so keep an eye out for that

3:38 PM
And the bot needs a nsfw filter

!!unbox on and !!unbox off kinda stuff

@allquixotic removed the urban plugin cause of all the dirty language :'(

lol
you can write a filter. just filter the output before you send it to the adapter

@rlemon any idea what the status is on the two bugfix pull requests we submitted a while ago to master?

Added to my todo

3:40 PM
@allquixotic what is the issue # ??

github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot/pull/157 and github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot/pull/154 (the latter is not so much of a bug fix but a feature)

@rlemon Oh great. We've got some users that will love that.

merged the unbans
I will let Zirak put in his 2 cents for the other one
he will be here this weekend

@allquixotic No CSS for me. Is it the site, or my sh***y DNS again?

diskcryptor.net/wiki/Console for superuser.com/questions/699278/… (add more stuff for extra love from the crowd)

4:13 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy change it to google's dns servers ?

@ThatBrazilianGuy it's only partially encrypted so the CSS doesn't work because the CSS loads over regular http

actually I might end up writing an answer for it anyway

@ThatBrazilianGuy change it to google's dns servers ?

and yeah, I do believe its a scriptable way to crash a system

@JourneymanGeek why on earth do you need that?
I know you don't want to explain in the Q, but tell us here

4:14 PM
@allquixotic: I did!

@Gowtham Problem is we have a couple bonky servers and some internal sites will only open if I use one, and others will open only if I use the other. Also, internal policy if using only free, open and/or auditable services, etc.

Basically my parents want me to 'break' the shared system over some strife we have with the in laws ;p

haha

they wanted me to disable the monitor. I was thinking the fan

@JourneymanGeek lol

4:15 PM
but, that lacks artistry
If one is going to be a Bad Dog , one needs to do it in style
now, I need to work out a way to get this happening at random

@JourneymanGeek taskshedule + some js magic...

@JourneymanGeek welp, time to get a Driver Signing Certificate for $1000/year and let them install an electrode into your brain
you need a kernel module (tm)

@allquixotic: in theory, I could activate this from my system over psexec.
I may also only need to do this once. And then break the system more totally.

@JourneymanGeek you could also use Vista-or-later's MSG command to send messages like "ERROR" (very cryptic and scary) and "VERY SERIOUS ERROR - PLEASE LEAVE NOW"

@allquixotic: I don't want to be too clever
well, maybe a little. I am pondering ways to downgrade youtube ;p

4:19 PM
disable the hwa, and remove the video driver...

@Braiam: while not actually being at a computer at all.

Q: Add a spikey hair badge

iamkrillinYou should add a badge for when a user goes over 9000 rep that references spiky hair. Perhaps allow them to wear a spiky hair on their avatar for a day or so to celebrate. That would be good fun.

@JourneymanGeek err.... just inject the thing full of virus...

@Braiam: I have two hours, and plausible deniability ;p

well that was unexpected
I really wish the VM would make up its mind which window has focus

4:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek one more idea for your mischievous actions.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: attaboy ;p
I'm wondering if BSODing it once, then causing a more major seeming failure is a good idea
but that means I won't be able to 'fix' it without major issues
@ThatBrazilianGuy: tho, consolidate them into one answer

@JourneymanGeek First a few shutdows without dialog, then a few reboots with a cryptic warning, then a few BSDs.
If you really, really, really, really hate them, install Windows ME.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: sigh trust me, I could disable that box pretty easily
tough part is making it seem plausible.

@allquixotic any progress ? :P

@JourneymanGeek If it's an elder user, any message box displayed upon login will make them go OMG MY COMPUTER IS --GONNA EXPLODE-- SO SERIUOSLY BROKEN.
Been there, seen that. A few times. They will, usually, provide you a screenshot made with pen, paper and ilegible handwriting. Displaying some highly irrelevant info.

4:42 PM
its a mix
I don't want to get TOO clever tho
I want it cryptic enough that I can act dumb or better yet, blame the hardware

Throw one of those long codes MS loves to provide. 0x8ac70013, 0x8100039d, etc

lol
the BSOD off the dcrypt program is good enough
IRQ Less or equal ;p

Why exactly do you need to do that? Is it something you can tell us? Are you one of the good guys or the bad ones?

I did! Twice!

I am too lazy to scroll up Oh, I haven't noticed!

4:48 PM
Oh, that's nefarious @JourneymanGeek. I like it.
I would just write a program in shell:execute that waits <avg session length/2+randomOffset> and displays a message box with "An error has occurred with your logon session. Please save all work and then click log out. ERR 0x80004005" with a single "Logout" button to close the dialog, which causes the current user to be logged off.
Doesn't cause damage, but would get to be annoying as hell.
Bonus points for flagging the dialog as Always-on-top
Also, googling 80004005 is useless.

I'm probably kicking this off with a BSOD.

@DarthAndroid Best way to break a system: leave it to a house pet =P

oh, and I need to mess with youtube

@DarthAndroid I tried .____.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: I'm pretty good at fixing these things!

4:55 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy So JourneymanGeek should have it covered, yes?

> I'm doing it addition to other bits of naughtiness like passing web traffic to a proxy so I can apply some aggressive traffic shaping.
You, sire, are despicable.

You could go full upside-down-ternet on them.
"Oh, no, congress passed secret a bill to flip the Internet upside down a few days ago."

once again, plausibility

Make all the images from facebook img cdn return 404's

why even bother? Set up tinyproxy, pass web traffic through that, then run it through trickle.

4:57 PM
well, upside down-ternet is just one affect you can apply.
instead of --flip, try --blur 10

Would be awesome as a joke, but here stealthness > awesomeness

yup
and keeping it low key
I want it to be annoying yet natural

randomly or periodically disable the ethernet (or wifi) port
blame the driver or hardware

oh I intend to go one better. I want to pass the traffic through squid or tinyproxy

well, then stick with a transparent http proxy, trickle the speed, and slightly blur the images
or highly-compressed jpgs would also work

5:01 PM
I don't need to even bother with a transparent proxy
I have enough time to set up a regular one

stop the blurriness obsession, man

well you just suggested squid

images shouldn't be an issue
I just need to degrade some things
but using QOS on the whole network is overkill
actually thats a great idea

Explain it to me plz? QOS isn't package priority or something?

well, connection priority
so If I happen to have higher priority traffic...

5:04 PM
Oh you can set it per IP / host? I thought it was per protocol or service.

QoS generally involves connection priority and throttling. Depending on the router, you can set it per traffic type, per port, and/or per host

yup
oh, no one else uses skype

I have HTTP flagged as Ultra-High for the first 500KB, and then it drops to Bulk, for example
So pages load fast, but downloads won't overload the network.
