Bob
12:00 AM
if you load a site through HTTP, anyone along the way can trivially change the form submission to not go over HTTPS

12:25 AM
@Bob or, you know, have JS in the page that silently captures whatever you submit and XHRs it away to an attacker
if you start on a page that's https, and you trust the URL in the address bar, things are looking better

@DarthAndroid not even that; for Class 1 domain SSL certificates, all the cert is verifying is that whoever is currently serving you the webpage has access to a private signing key issued by a CA which at one point in the not too distant past verified that someone can check email at the domain in question

@allquixotic I was playing it on a roadtrip ;p

12:40 AM
DIY Cryptocurrency

interesting idea
make money off basically generating nearly identical files, for more than what the processing cost costs.

I looked at that, and all I saw was someone making a shitload of money from the 0.05BTC cost.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Uhh... we get quite the opposite.
Everyone swarms and breaks it on the day enrollment opens :P

@JourneymanGeek I don't do discounts. Come back with more money.

Bob
wait WTF
...randomised backup? onto clients' servers?

12:50 AM
They're playing russian roulette with client servers.

Bob
wait, they didn't at least get dedicated machines? the load enrollment servers suffer is immense

we don't know what kind of machines they were

they might have thought they were getting a dedicated machine.

Bob
@allquixotic if they were dumping backups from other servers onto them, we can safely assume they were not dedicated
@MichaelFrank well then.

1:01 AM
they were probably low end box Pentium IIIs :D
you know... if Core was Pentium V, Core 2 was Pentium VI, Nehalem was Pentium VII, Sandy Bridge was Pentium VIII, Ivy Bridge was Pentium IX, then Haswell is Pentium X

Bob
one thing you could do: as soon as you get a new dedi, run Prime95 on full for a day

Bob
if they lied and it's actually virtual... well, they can deal with the CPU usage while you prepare to sue them :D

i don't think the problem was physical vs virtual servers
it was that they were co-opting a customer's server to do backups

Bob
@allquixotic which wouldn't be possible if it were physical/dedicated
if it's a virtual server, they can do whatever the hell else they want on the physical machine
it's still a bad thing to do

1:04 AM
sure it would -- they didn't say the server was down, just that it was swamped by the backups
it could be a physical box they're using, and just run another process
this all makes sense if you consider the very real possibility that the load balancing solution was "fully managed" which means the customer doesn't even have access to the box, it's just a canned solution

Bob
@allquixotic ...I was assuming unmanaged

well it's a load balancing solution and not "give me a server and I'll do wtfever I want to with it"

Bob
still, a dedicated server comes with the expectation of being able to use all the resources at all times

or even just most of the resources

Bob
and not have it being used for any other purposes

1:05 AM
not 0.5-5% of them

Bob
a virtual server usually has far looser expectations
in any case, yea that was a stupid system anyway
who the hell dumps 18 TB of backups onto random clients' systems?
sheesh... get a dedicated backup system or three

here's what I could see happening as a potentially valid scheme: each server rack has a NAS for backups and all the servers are on the same switch; one server is designated the "backup server" but spare capacity is sold to a customer. the non-backup servers get sold at full price; the backup server gets sold (either in its entirety (unlikely unless fully managed), or a VM) at a significant discount due to the likelihood of it being pegged at certain times of the week
if the customers are fully aware of this fact, that would actually work as a configuration

Bob
@allquixotic heck, I'd buy it if it were discounted enough :P
not like I need full performance at all times

if you're doing that you could always add a second NIC

Bob
@JourneymanGeek if they were getting errors back it's more likely something other than the NIC

1:18 AM
backup would be I/O bound
@JimmyHoffa ES?
@Bob rate my analogy :P (not really, just showing you another of my analogies)

A: What are the main impacts of SELinux, from an administration point of view?

allquixoticActually, if you run a modern distribution of Linux, such as Fedora or CentOS, chances are good that you already have "an SELinux system". @allquixotic 10/10 would read again :P

@allquixotic correct, but i suspect you'd saturate the network before the drives

Aww yiss, the drive I was using to hold files during a reinstall of my OS has corrupted
which also contained my windows iso..

heh... I formatted the USB key that was holding my Win8 OEM key... then put the Win8 ISO on it.

Bob
@mich I like the other answer

I had to format the TB on my comp to run recuva on it, hopefully I will get my ISO, then reinstall from a USB key and attempt to recover my other 1tb..
which has 120GB of music, 50 gigs in ISOs, ~600 gigs in movies/tv shows, 100 gigs in software... woo
but it's my fault =p I don't really care about most of the stuff

1:56 AM
@Bob that entire question is just... poor.
120GB in music? Is it all FLAC?

@MichaelFrank why would it all have to be in flac to justify 120gb of music?

@MichaelFrank no, MP3
I think it's 120GB, may be more
aaaand 3 hours left on the first terabyte HDD recovery

@kalina It seems like an awful lot of music.

@MichaelFrank collections grow over time
I have somewhere in the region of ~300gb of MP3s

I listen to a lot of music!

2:04 AM
definitely 250gb+
and a tiny quantity of FLAC files

Recently I've been youtubing music, so my collection hasn't been expanding

by far though I find the biggest use of space to be TV shows

... I've never lost data, or kept backups. When do I lose data? While reorganizing my hard drive so I can start keeping backups

lol
all of my important data is backed up to dropbox and google drive
I don't care about media files

I have all of my "important files" (school and stuff still), but I lost ISOs, software, music, tv shows, movies, etc... but those things aren't really important, all redownloadable
I'm going to start using Google Drive to back up "important files" on a regular basis

2:07 AM
@kalina that's a lot of music o_O
but I never steal music and I stopped buying Amazon MP3s when I signed up for Spotify

I'm trying to stop pirating..

33.5 GB of music here

and clippy offered his help, how nice

@allquixotic I steal everything and then eventually buy it as it crosses the threshold of being something I use frequently

plus XX TB of music from Spotify

2:08 AM
@kalian that's probably what I'll do once I graduate

I buy any movie I watch 3+ times
I buy TV series once they're available on bluray if it's something that I like/watch frequently

I really hope the culture of piracy dies out -- it's bad for everyone in the long run, just for a few short-term gains for the people doing it... sigh

I don't see what I do as piracy, I see it as try before you buy

Some argue that it actually does some good, getting names out there that otherwise wouldn't be

the music industry is just archaic and not keeping up with the times

2:10 AM
aside from the legal aspect, I do know a few people that have bought someone's product after they have pirated and actually liked the software

same with movies

it really doesn't matter whether you see it as one thing or another -- the fact is it's illegal. I wouldn't murder my neighbors and steal their possessions even if I was absolutely certain that I would not get caught or face any consequences for doing so. it's the principle of it.

I'm trying to murder me...

do they need to change their business model? hell yes

Sif clippy doesn't respond! :(

2:11 AM
@allquixotic While it may be "illegal", I don't see things like Spotify as the solution
Fundamentally, the artists don't get paid what they should be getting paid because the labels steal all the money

@ekaj I do this. :)

There are enough artists in the world that have spoken out against the way the system works
If the music industry and movies industry stopped pumping out crap, my "try before you buy" mentality would change
but since the last... 100, maybe, movies I've watched were crap, I don't feel the need to support the industry

Spotify is try before you buy, in a way. you pay $9.99/month; if you want to have the music offline, you can buy the album
I do that sometimes. ditto Netflix and DVDs

ground control to major tom, your circuits dead, there's something wrong

@allquixotic and the artists see less than 0.5% of the money you pay

2:14 AM
@kalina so that makes stealing and giving everyone $0, better? doesn't compute

two evils

thing is, you're not obligated to buy it no matter how much you enjoyed it; and not everyone is totally diligent about the moral principle of "I like this. I'm going to support the artist. *buy*" -- I'd wager most aren't like that
most are like, "WOOT! free stuff! *consume consume consume*"

when I buy music I purchase it on a physical media of some kind anyway
which is why I have over 5000 dance records on vinyl

I would like to see a picture of that. :o

I will take a picture of that, when they're not packed away in boxes destroying my cupboards
I am technically in the middle of moving between houses :p

2:17 AM
what I really want is to play Endless Space with @JimmyHoffa, but he's off having a life or something tonight, leaving me all alone to speculate about what might become of the Pilgrims and the Sheredyn
I guess I'll just have to watch a TotalBiscuit video

why would you do that -.-

Bob
@kalina most is from concerts, IIRC

now gaming is a completely different thing all together
I get all of my games on Steam

Bob
@allquixotic could you briefly describe ES?

2:18 AM
@Bob Civilization V in space
that enough for ya?

pretty accurate

Bob
huh... actually, now I'm interested

I found it to be a little more complex than Civ 5

oh, and you get to DESIGN YOUR OWN SHIPS :D (not appearance, but content)

Bob
(civ v is another one of those games I got in a sale sometime and never got around to -_-)

2:18 AM
@allquixotic you ever played Sins?

heck yes, Michael :D
love it :D

Bob
but I'll probably forget about it by the time I get home :P

GalCiv, GalCiv 2, Sins, Sword of the Stars, StarDrive, Endless Space... you could say I'm a bit of a fan of space strategy

Bob
and my times don't really match up with any of yours :(

@Bob yeah, I know :( we'd have to play on weekends only or something.

2:19 AM
@Bob Steam is a pain for sales
I've only played maybe 25% of the games I own on Steam

Bob
@kalina ...more than me
I haven't even downloaded 5%

the only game I own on Steam that I've never played is Incredipede

Bob
heck, I didn't even know I had most of them

seriously, what in the hell, I don't even

Bob
humble bundles don't help
@allquixotic ? :S

2:21 AM
@Bob lol no, no they don't

oh wait, I just learned that I also have Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken! I haven't played that either!

I try and play all my steam games for at least an hour...

..this is not going well
I've just spotted 3 more I've never played
I didn't even know I owned these!!!!
wtf.... am I logged in on someone else's account?

Bob
@MichaelFrank that would take many many hours

WHOA...

Bob
2:22 AM
actually, it'd take the better part of a year, at an hour per day

I own Sleeping Dogs?! I've never even installed it!

That game is terrible on PC

SteamApp1252... that one sounds like a classic

I was so disappointed.

Bob
I haven't even added the last few humble bundles to Steam
in fact, I don't even know if I have enough HDD space for all of them

2:23 AM
lol

my id on steam is the same as here

Bob
@MichaelFrank I'll probably forget that, too
hey, complicated plan time!

mine's weregeek ;p

Bob
@allquixotic could you message me that name on steam so I see it when I get home? :P

2:25 AM
@MichaelFrank: odd, I think thats awesome

Bob
actually, nah, I can just email it to myself

is there any way to make the steam browser navigate to a specific URL on the main steam client (not the in-game one)?

@JourneymanGeek hmm?
@allquixotic Your profile is private?

Bob
@allquixotic why would you want to do that?

@MichaelFrank ya
@Bob to navigate to his profile

Bob
2:26 AM
@allquixotic just use a normal browser?
the steam browser is the slowest PoS I've had to use

@MichaelFrank private profile is best profile

Bob
slower than the old opera mobile I have on my phone
also, apparently steam on phone can't view your library
that sucks
of course it can view the store

my steam profile is furiouslyangelic

Bob
oh, why not

but you don't get to see much on that one either

Bob
2:28 AM
puts on list to add

Has anyone read Little Brother?

I haven't.

apparently recuva doesn't grab ISOs, according to an old report

Listening to the Halo 3 soundtrack right now, and one of the drums sounds exactly like the mention sound that's played here in chat

Bob
@MichaelFrank bonk

2:39 AM
@Bob yes, yes. I get it.

Bob
@MichaelFrank :P

Soo.... just found out that I can get Unlimited VDSL for $10 more a month than what I'm currently paying... BUT it won't be available in my area until 2015 :(

Bob
@MichaelFrank hey, you too? :P
that NBN thing they were planning here was scheduled to be installed in my area from the end of 2014, but now the new gov wants VDSL(2) rather than FTTH
:(

Yea, I got a friend in Longreach who was complaining about that.

Bob
they also said they don't think anyone needs more than something like 4Mbps up, so, there goes the plan to actually have offsite backups

2:49 AM
You need Kim Dotcom then! He's joined forces with my ISP to bring NZs best internet! (apparently)

VDSL?

!! wiki VDSL

Very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL or VHDSL) is a digital subscriber line (DSL) technology providing data transmission faster than ADSL over a single flat untwisted or twisted pair of copper wires (up to 52 Mbit/s downstream and 16 Mbit/s upstream), and on coaxial cable (up to 85 Mbit/s down- and upstream) using the frequency band from 25 kHz to 12 MHz. These rates mean that VDSL is capable of supporting applications such as high-definition television, as well as telephone services (voice over IP) and general Internet access, over a single connecti...

nope?
Ahh there we go.

Bob
2:56 AM
All forms of DSL suck

ahh right

Yea, but the fibre rollout here isn't going to reach us before VDSL does

Bob
because you really shouldn't be trying to get high speed internet access over shitty old copper anyway
@MichaelFrank fibre rollout? what fibre rollout?
apparently we "don't need" fibre
apparently, we "don't want" fibre
yea, fuck that

They're rolling out fibre across NZ

VDSL is only available within 18000 feet of an ISP if I recall correctly, a little further with special boxes
maybe I'm thinking of another networking standard
ah, over copper, not when paired with fiber optics

Bob
3:01 AM
@MichaelFrank :)
that's another country on my list of places to move, then! :D

just what i need VD net :-)

just make sure you pick the right area: chorus.co.nz/maps
Oh wow: www.razerzone.com/christine

Bob
oh great, my address is now simply listed as not currently available, not in one year anymore
yay!
...who votes in these clowns, anyway? not exactly the only thing they've made a mess of, and it's only been like four months

It's.. not.

Success! Just got a call from the call centre girls and they were saying they needed me to head out to reboot a server. Just as I was trying to figure out an excuse not to go, one of them mentioned that the call was just downgraded to a next working day SLA and they'd get someone else to do it. :D

Bob
@MichaelFrank o.o

@DragonLord that's a very risky thing to do
I've managed to horribly mess up my bootloader before by resetting the UEFI and therefore dropping from (fake)RAID 1 into IDE mode

As expected (see this article, under "Getting to the boot options menu (automatically) when there is a problem"), the system entered automatic recovery after detecting the boot loop, and I went back into the UEFI settings and changed it back to AHCI to restore normal operation

Heh, did you see part of the reason the silkroad guy was caught was asking a question on stackoverflow?

Bob
6:04 AM
@ekaj huhwhat

yeah ;p

Ulbricht posted the question using his own real name. oops

Bob
@ekaj meh

Hi my name is Duane P. Opelmyer and i would like to know how to stay anonymous on the web , If you can help please contace me at DuaneP@dumbass.com

Bob
6:12 AM
I don't really see how "the code looks similar" is supposed to mean anything
that looks like a pretty damn standard way to do things

@Bob: basically it proved that frosty, and this guy were the same guy

^

it wasn't just the code. The indictment was a good read actually, LOTS of old school detective work

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the name and username were circumstantial, but somewhat damning
> Based on forensic analysis of the Silk Road Web Server, I know that the computer code ... includes a customized PHP strip based on 'curl' that is functionally very similar to the computer code described in Ulbricht's posting on Stack Overflow, and includes several lines of code that are identical to lines of code quoted in the posting.
^ that particular quote means nothing at all

@Bob: thats just part of it.
and don't forget, this is aimed at non technical folk

Bob
6:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek yet that is the only quote that article decided to use

I believe Ars has a better article

Bob
I'm not debating whether they had more/better evidence, just that they probably could have chosen a better quote than that one, which really has no significant meaning at all.

even describing "customized php string based on curl" is WAY over the heads of normal people

@ekaj a what ? :-)

Bob
@ekaj and, again, actually means nothing
oh look I have a "customized php string based on curl"
oh look it's similar to what's in this question that is publicly visible on a very popular programmers' resource

6:15 AM
It's referencing the question that he had, not saying "oh my god he used php"

Bob
@ekaj I know that the main point is they linked name and username
but my point is they chose a useless quote, when they could have done better
what I'm saying here is that quote is useless
it really adds nothing at all

well become an editor for them and check their technical articles for them, problem solved

Bob
it's basically fluff that says "hey we quoted from an official source"
it's also an annoyingly popular thing to do
@ekaj why would I want to do that?
Frankly, I don't care if their articles are crap. I don't read them anyway.
But this is a very annoying practice across a lot of sites and publications.
I'm ranting about it because it annoys me, but it's not something I can or want to take action about, because at the end of the day it's meaningless.

"While this was going on, the FBI was tearing into the mirrored server, where it found all sorts of incriminating information. For one thing, the server had been set up to accept encrypted SSH logins, and the server's public key ended with "frosty@frosty." In addition, a lightly modified version of the code posted to StackOverflow was being used on the server—apparently with its errors corrected"
thats from ars ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek really, that would still be circumstantial... but it's an example, so bleh

6:20 AM
@Bob: as I said, its part of a wider indictment
and well
I'd assume that since they got the server, there should have been a trail back to the suspect

Bob
heh:
> This happens very, very rarely. I have more than enough fingers to count the times this has occurred since I started working here a year and a half ago. I wouldn't need a single toe, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need both hands.
I can't help but think that's some kind of attempt to avoid a gag order :P

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Why is DDR2 so expensive :<

If Tor is a way for the governement to consolidate "criminal" (along with some non-criminal) net stuff into a smaller piles of "web" that they can even get through. They probably got him based on his use of thier Tor network . Tor=TinyWeb Observer & Reporting :-) Then to maintin the hoax of the government run network , they need to point to obvious Open visable things to get court orders, and convictions.

Michael, aren't you the one who posted a link about downloading more RAM?

Bob
@MichaelFrank cause money!

6:32 AM
@MichaelFrank: they don't make it any more ;p
Best bet is to take a risk, and find a place that pulls em

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, RAM doesn't really die :P

@Bob: oh, I had an old motherboard that fried any ram you put into one of the slots.

@MichaelFrank I couldnt give that stuff away before, and a few years ago a search on e-bay for Used stuff showed it was way cheaper than the stuff i bought. although ram (generally) was much more expencive earlier in time.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek in normal use*
happy now? :P

ACCURACY IS IMPORTANT!

Bob
6:51 AM
yay crowded hot train station

@Psycogeek Yea... I could go second hand. But even that's pretty hard to find now.

Bob
@mic ditch the entire machine?
is it really worth it to upgrade the ram?

7:08 AM
@Bob I'd love to, but she-who-holds-the-purse-strings wants babies. And from what I hear, they're expensive!

@Michael what speed?

7:37 AM
This is uhm ... noobish razerzone.com/christine

Bob
@Gowtham Don't worry, it'll only cost like 5x as much as an Apple machine
> The modularity of Project Christine makes it perpetually customizable, helping eliminate the need to replace entire systems.
Uh. I forsee compatibility problems.
e.g. DDR3 RAM isn't gonna work with DDR4 CPUs, etc., etc.
You can't simply work around those problems.
Not when Intel (and AMD) is trying to put everything on the CPU.

8:06 AM
how long should dd take to write a 500mb .iso to a flashdrive?

not long at all

8:25 AM
Yea, it took about 2mins in the end. Was just impatient. :)

Bob
4 MB/s. Bit of a slow flash drive, but not too bad.
That's the kind of speed I saw back with the 2 GB drives, I think.
Some of the cheap 8 GB ones now can do ~12 MB/s

Hello

@NeeleshPandey hi

@ekaj ..?
Custom theming?

@ekaj That's just a theme

replacing the default eplorer.exe

That's horrid

8:47 AM
I didn't say it was beautiful =p it's just an example

Bob
@MichaelFrank Thank you.
(Seriously, that font + that colour scheme... are you supposed to be able to read anything?)
@MichaelFrank well, what machine do you want more RAM for?
i.e. what are the other specs?

My desktop. Q6600@3.2GHz, GTX560Ti, aaaaaaaaaaaaand that's about all that's relevant I suppose?
Windows, for whatever reason, has always thought that my OC was 3.6GHz...
D:

Bob
@MichaelFrank you could get a new CPU + mobo with slightly worse performance than that one for about $100 :P
(which would then use DDR3 RAM)

Yea, if I'm going to upgrade it'll be a good upgrade though

Bob
true, but then finding DDR2 RAM is kinda... I dunno, I personally might prefer just a cheap upgrade. but I'm not the one in this situation, so.. yea

8:54 AM
Yea, I don't really need to upgrade this any further. I'll probably be buying my friend's PC when he moves to Canada later in the year. That's much more current.
