Q: What hardware will Ubuntu Touch support?

Marco CeppiWith the announcement of the Ubuntu Phone OS I'd like to know what phone (and tablet) models are supported at this time. Note from foss & Oli: We are making this the master question for all future "Will this work on <insert random tablet/phone/device here>?!" questions

I were not snarky here right?
@ThomasW. done, and you think we need a "welcome new user" kind of meta post?
01:13
@Braiam Can we just have a huge system-modal popup that says "Hello, New User! Before you post your question, search the site a little to see if your question has already been asked. In 95% of all cases your question has already been asked."
01:45
That was weird - my Ubuntu server got stuck at the Grub menu.
my studio setup acted weird like that today

@Mateo downvoted, flagged, just waiting for it to get nuked (also VTC'd)
@NathanOsman That happens every time I reboot my VMs or VPSes, and grub gets hung there. My laptop doesn't do that, nor does my other system (12.04)... not sure what causes it :/
@ThomasW. blame the VM/VPS software!
01:54
@ThomasW. Same here - it was a VM.
@Braiam I doubt we're using the same hypervisor :P
@Braiam openvz, kvm, virtualbox, doesn't matter, replicated on all of those
then blame GRUB!
what's the problem? There's always someone to blame D:
@NathanOsman this happened with OpenVZ stuff, KVM stuff, and VBox VMs, so... not sure why the VMs / VPSes are affected and not actual setups
(on 12.04)
@Braiam blame the gremlins.
@NathanOsman amazon.com/gp/product/B0032HF60M A killer whale remote control car? x)
@ThomasW. you can't ... I killed those bastards! D:<
01:56
@ThomasW. I'm using Hyper-V.
@NathanOsman ah. never used Hyper-V
but something about VM / VPS installations seems to make Ubuntu hate it with Grub...
It's bundled with Windows - but it's a lot better than it sounds.
and it randomly shows up... and randomly stops showing up too...
which is weird.
it's like a kernel bug that only shows up some of the time
in random instances

@NathanOsman did ya break it?
@ThomasW. No, it's not broken.
:12464580 ¬_¬
It's just that browsers, operating systems, network stacks, and routers do a terribly inconsistent job of caching lookups.
02:08
This usually leads to me saying "forget it" and adding the hostname to "hosts.txt" :P
hehehehe
dig @dns host FTW?
It's coming up empty for the hostname.
It's propagating - I can see it from other machines. Just nothing on this network.
So it's either Google's DNS servers or my router.
02:33
@Mochan you like the Sims?!
@JorgeCastro Yeah, it's just that, on a personal basis, I find my self needed packages from a regular Ubuntu install.

Q: Fix a broken desktop GUI

user221890I've been running 12.04 on a NVidia GPU. I attempted to install ATI's proprietary catalyst drivers and a second GPU. Now the X-desktop will not start. How do I refresh the borked desktop? Can NVidia and ATI's HD series coexist?

Why! why! D:
04:07
@NathanOsman O_O
@Seth that question... lacks info.... and "Can NVidia and ATI's HD series coexist?" seems like a rethoric question... of course no...
BTW, who wants to see the YT video here?
04:23
@NathanOsman iframes!
@Seth eh, I tried it once, plugged two cards in the same system one ati - one nvidia - the goal to either do bitcoin on two graphics (would need the drivers for both) or to do a multiseat setup with what ever I had laying around... result was failure. its too bad that graphics card companies have gone so closed with the drivers

UtkarshSo, My HDD was getting full, so i ran sudo apt-get autoremove but after that, my PC's icons are looking worser than ever! Gnome is just looking uglier than ever and the same is unity. Please help me. EDIT: After REstoring, my sounds are changed. what to do now?

@Bri i am not able to understand
what does it mean?
@Utkarsh that read the article and see why I edited your question...
@Braiam is that backticks are used in the question.
@Utkarsh: I think he thinks you're abusing formatting
formatting is like salt. add a little. Too much and people get high bp
15:05
@Utkarsh don't use backticks for words other than commands.
@Avi @Jou @Bri What are backtics. i am only 13 thats why i cant understand anything
please help
`` are backtiks.
> [...] i cant understand anything
that might be a bit of a problem

@JourneymanGeek he probably won't understand it either.
@Utkarsh: You do get formatting, right?

@AvinashRaj Tennessee?
@jok @Avi TN means T**** N****
Ahh, the glorious land of corrupt politicians and state run boozeries.
@Utkarsh: too many letters ;p
@Utkarsh yes
@Utkarsh can you stop pinging people with just the 3 letters? I find it rude.
15:13
@Utkarsh: smart lazy people use tab complete.
@avi age?
@jok why?
Good bye.

@Avi i am from delhi
BOSS = Insta off topic.
15:18
@jokerdino wait a sec, why it's not closed!
@Braiam I don't know. It's a bad question anyway.
It might be about Ubuntu being slow and the OP being on BOSS atm.
OP is a trogan!
He is marketing about BOSS on Ubuntu.
@jok no i am not
does boss need marketing? Its installed on all those vote buying attempts state sponsored laptops and nothing else.
@jokerdino tagged debian... so dunno
@JourneymanGeek I haven't seen anyone using BOSS yet.
except the guy sitting next to me. I made him boot to BOSS just once.
15:21

@Bra you a MEAN

@Jou
@joke
Utkarsh - please limit the use of @ pinging of users - poor etiquette and all that. Try also to complete the @ user name not just the 3 letters - it makes chat harder to follow.
@jokerdino what did he ever do to you? ;p
@fossfreedom okay dear friend! if u feel bad then, i will not do it. be happy :-)
@JourneymanGeek Well, he sat next to me!
15:27

anyone see the reason de etre for this question since the bug was fixed?
@Braiam historical value.
and if the bug comes back then users will have something to go for. but I know the answer might not work. So it's of more historical value than an actual guide.
@Alvar vtc then...
1 year and only 4k views
@Braiam askubuntu.com/questions/135818/… I did, damn long comment.
@Braiam It should have been closed from the beginning since it's a bug report, but since they got a workaround it stayed I guess...
16:03
@Alvar that was because @Thomas wasn't arround telling people that workrround bugs are TO
@Braiam not cool.
@Braiam you mean OT?
yeah
why didnt u vote to close?

Oli
I never really understood the point of V-ing-to-C a post that is twenty months old and is thoroughly dealt with. It might not have an accepted answer but it does have a +28 with a reward bounty on that...
16:16
@Oli I thought of it as a way to show future visitors that this question shouldn't be viewed as a question with facts on how to do this now. It should only be viewed as how to work-around this bug in this Ubuntu version. And should therefor get a "historical significant" closure. In my opinion.
BBT
Good Night
@Oli is to prevent the broken windows problem
also the question/answers are not relevant anymore since the bug is fixed
17:05
Quick question: does anyone know why removing a package might install others?
Oli
Oli
@InkBlend If something else depends on that package. It'll pull it out. And if other things depend on that other package, they'll go too.
Etc, etc.
@Oli If something depends on that package, though, shouldn't it just be removed as well because you are explicitly uninstalling its dependencies?
@InkBlend there are cases when some package "breaks" or blocks another.
If you remove the blocker package, they install another package, etc

@Braiam does nobody read my meta answers then? I said that on a (now marked as duplicate) meta item.
@jokerdino are mods able to split answers off of posts on meta and move them to another answer?
@ThomasW. yes?
or no?
(failkeyboard sorry)
wait, what do you mean?
i move a part of an answer to another answer?
^ that's called editing
no, move an answer to a different question
I.E. answer in question 2 -> question 1
18:15
i can maybe merge those questions?
that would move all answers from q2 to q1.
Hey, all! I just went through this question: askubuntu.com/questions/254457/… and found that it has been marked as a duplicate to this: askubuntu.com/questions/18641/… and not closed as off-topic on Feb 13, when 13.04 was still beta/alpha. Is there a norm followed which ones to be marked as duplicates and which ones as off-topics for alpha/beta releases?
@Jobin not really. It very much depends on who was the first one to close vote and what they voted on.
huh... i think SE glitched
i just saw a notice about a flag in The Bridge, gaming's chat
@ThomasW. too slow...
@Jobin, how did you come to that question?

"StackExchange (ergo AskUbuntu) is for questions that has 1 valid answer and that that answer will be still valid for the years to come. [...] here's not the right place to solve them." It really seems like you should have submitted "This is a bug for reasons X and Z. The proper venue to resolve this is <link>" as an answer to the question. I would have said thank you, I would have upvoted and accepted your answer, other users could have learned from it, and the thread would be open for @JohnSmith to come forward and say "No, it's not a bug!
