12:46 AM
Totally out of context
I was browsing for the date of the first D&D manual and I found the title of the first recognized wargame ever
A Game for Boys of Twelve Years of Age to One Hundred and Fifty and for that More Intelligent Sort of Girl Who Likes Boys' Games and Books.

lol
when was that?

I'm really torn between marking the title as sexist and getting away with it or clapping hands to the recognition of "girl that does not conform to standards = more intelligent" (But I guess it's the first)

yeah
that really does come off more sexist than anything else
cause sure, it's great for a girl to not conform to standards,.... especially when standards say horrible things
but,.... basing Intelligence off of being more into guy things is pretty bad

I'm absolutely not thinking he was being anything but sexist, mind you. I'm just telling myself that I'm happy that girls open-minded enough to join games that are commonly made for boys and enjoyed by boys exist. And the focus is not on liking games, is to getting the courage required to actually join the fray, despite prejudice.
"Dungeons & Dragons: Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargame Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures." (oD&D manual title)
Now the first guy telling me 4e is ruining D&D with all this need for miniatures is a dead man.

1:01 AM
@Zachiel this kinda sounds like something someone in the 1800's would say

1913

eh

@Zachiel Ah, Little Wars!
By H.G. Wells.

lol

1:11 AM
23.95$ !!!
awe$omedice
well, g2g

"because your DM has no free will"

1:25 AM
@waxeagle I was hoping it'd be a ball.

lol

1:40 AM
We're in the links on Gnome Stew!

[braces]

@Zachiel the plastic version is $7 which isn't crazy for a custom die...obviously this one is of....limited...use

2 hours later…
3:25 AM
Hmm. Thundery.
[waits for power to fail]

3:36 AM
Just finished the Basic Rules document for my Tabletop game! Woo!
(FeelsGoodBro.png)

Grats!

Yeah, I finished the section on Rewards and Leveling, and then I looked at my notes to see what was left... and there was nothing!
Still need to write / rewrite some of the more in-depth stuff, but the framework is written and looking spiffy.

4:13 AM
Nice nice.

2 hours later…
6:10 AM
lol

4 hours later…
10:11 AM
Good day, @Magician!

[waves distractedly]

Also BESW.

10:28 AM
Tonight, I make new mock-up covers because my client finally realized on his own the thing I said seven months ago.
[queues up Pinkie Pie, Aqua, Vengaboys, and Dylan for marathon grimacework]

10:43 AM
Meanwhile, I'm trying to create Legend homebrew for the first time.

@Metool Good luck

11:40 AM
Our first question! (I just submitted a tag wiki for it, waiting for approval.)

12:15 PM
I think I have something workable.

Hello

Hello

Greetings, all.

[wave]
@KitFox, @leokhorn, @InbarRose Hi!

@Metool: Hey, weren't you working on a one-on-one campaign in this chat recently?

12:26 PM
Hi @BESW.

@leokhorn I believe so.

@Metool How's it going? I was curious to know if it did work out ultimately :)

I came to drum up some interest in the Writer's chat, but also I am planning to DM for the first time on Saturday and I'm nervous about it.

@KitFox Cool! What system?

Um. D&D from 1980. I haven't played since I was a kid.

12:29 PM
@leokhorn The player in question bought me a computer RPG that we've been playing together, so no time to work on that.

(I'm afraid every time I've wandered into the english.se chats I find that the participants are more interested in debate than conversation.)

Well, we are a little rambunctious, but this is Writer's chat, for writers.SE, not EL&U.

@KitFox That's, what, AD&D? D&D Basic?

D&D Basic. I decided I was waaaay to rusty to attempt AD&D.
Although we did find all the books.

@Metool Aww. Oh well, as long as you have fun, eh? ;)

12:31 PM
Your chat room is really pretty.
It's a bit distracting.

@KitFox Heheh, nice. I didn't start playing RPGs until the early 2000s, so I don't have any experience with that particular system.
@KitFox [grin] I know, right? I have yet to find an SE site with a UI that better combines function with form.
@KitFox Is there anything in particular you're concerned about with getting back into GMing?

Um...there's so much to try to remember.
I'm not sure what all bits of paper I need to make sure we have beforehand.

One radical choice is to start by getting your feet wet running a simpler system, like Roll for Shoes, the first session.

We're going to play with my 11-year-old nephew. He lives about five hours away, so he visits every month or two and I'd really like him to like to play.

@KitFox Oh, excellent.

12:37 PM
@BESW That looks like fun, but I think he needs more experience before he gets the humor.

So, assuming you're not interested in trying some other system with less prep and fiddly bits, the key is going to be the extent to which you're willing/able/comfortable to make stuff up on the fly.
My first time GMing (also my first time playing an RPG) I came in with a great stack of notes and references and sheets and tables, which I threw out half an hour in because the group was doing something totally different and more interesting.
I still like to have a lot of prep work, but it's more about settings and people than stats and planned encounters.

Good to know.
I suppose I'll need some grid paper.

One trick is to have generic stat blocks that you can slap specific flavor onto at the drop of a hat. "low-level melee guy" becomes "local law enforcement" or "orc marauder" depending on your needs.

makes notes

@KitFox I'm sadly unfamiliar with the extent to which AD&D is grid-/miniature-based.

12:43 PM
Aww. That was my favorite part. But I am a super-dorky map-making kind of person.

When I was playing D&D 3.5 and 4e, I used a laminated 1''-square gridmap (roughly 22''x30'') and drew on it with Crayola window markers (they're like wet-erase markers, but they don't smudge as readily, come in more fun colors, and they wipe away more easily with a damp cloth).

nods

(The map was a folded rip-out from the 3.5 DMG.)

Sensible.

And I used Gnome Stew print-and-fold miniatures for cheap, quick, customizable minis.

12:46 PM
I am missing some of my old gear. I had laminated hex paper.
Three little boxes of old maps and characters. Probably at my mom's house = lost forever.

Aye.
Umm. Generic advice...

Yeah?

Trying to think of more.

Thanks. I gotta get some stuff done before chat time. You planning to come? I'll pop back with an announcement.

What time?

12:50 PM
I should know that, but I leave myself a wide window. I think it's officially 1pm Eastern.

I'm on the other side of the world and working late into the night on a design job, so might be around to lurk.

Hello!

In my personal experience and based on what I've seen in this site and chat, the single most important element of a successful RPG group is a healthy social dynamic. If everyone feels comfortable and safe and there's space for discussion of what's working and what isn't, everything else will work out.
3

Quite true. I'm actually unsure how some manage to GM for complete strangers.

@leokhorn Charisma, Wisdom, and lots of ranks in Diplomacy.

12:56 PM
@BESW Eheheh. Sounds about right :)
Random thought: have people ever used the chat for extended roleplaying? (as in, not just a random one-shot but a multi-session adventure at least)

@leokhorn Somewhat.
The Fate game room ran a semi-extended campaign a couple months ago before it fell apart due to me being the only GM for a dozen players.

@BESW Ah, I see. I've also seen a Roll For Shoes thing once, but I'm pretty sure it was a one-shot.

Yeah.
One moment, gathering link.

Hence "Fate game room"

The game sessions are gathered as narrative threads on this forum, and each has a link to the in-chat session.

1:05 PM
@Rob You created a tag....
I'm jealous XD

@BESW Oh, I think I've read a teensy bit of log/report of this some time ago. May have to bookmark this.

Did you have anything in particular in mind when you asked?
@JonathanHobbs And I made the wiki!
[thbbt]

@BESW Not really to be honest. Just thought the chat system would work nicely for it, even for asynchronous gaming since everything is stored and you can ping people who are offline.

We didn't try asynchronous, just ran a session with whoever was on when at least one player and a GM were available.
(The setting was defined to try making that reasonable.)

@BESW Round-robin GMs eh?

1:13 PM
@leokhorn I was hoping for it, yes.
But instead we wound up with round-robin players and just one regular GM.

@BESW You did a good job with it x)

@BESW As usual, GMs remain a rare commodity ^^;

We had three or four people interested in GMing, and a couple actually ran a session or two, but then they faded away.
The game served its purpose, though; it was started to let us experiment with the as-yet-unpublished FAE system and share it with others in the rpg.se community.

@BESW Good results overall? :)

I sure wouldn't mind playing as Stellata again though. :P

1:17 PM
Aye. We had fun, learned a lot (made a lot of mistakes).
@JonathanHobbs yes, although without Cat's PC...

What happened with her PC?

Nothing, because Cat hasn't shown up since.

!!
Was it broken?

No, I mean, Cat hasn't logged in for months.
So her PC hasn't had any sessions since the one you were part of.

Yeah I did wonder about that.
I didn't know anything was wrong with her PC.

1:23 PM
@JonathanHobbs I sense a confusion between Personal Computer and Player Character. Am I right?

@leokhorn Oh. Yes, maybe.
xD
@BESW Did you mean without her character?

Reading the backlog suddenly makes more sense

@KitFox The Same Page Tool has some important group-dynamic points to keep in mind even if you don't use the Tool itself, and Making the Tough Decisions is an essay on the player/character decision-making process which, again, you might want to have in mind even if you don't ask your group to read it themselves.
@JonathanHobbs Yes.

Yes this makes more sense to me too now

@leokhorn Thanks for that. And here I am talking about clarity of communication.

1:26 PM
@BESW No problem. I love spotting such confusions and bringing conversations back on track for some reason :)

Usually that's my job.

@BESW It's harder when you are in the conversation.

Aye.

I'm the most confused person if I'm a participant XD

Heh.
And I'm putting most of my brain into re-doing this cover layout.

1:37 PM
@BESW Yeah, what was that "marathon" about?

Oh, my client finally came around to something I'd suggested months ago, and that means I now have a lot of work that would've been a lot easier to do in the first place instead of shoehorning it into the design now.
So I'm making four or five new cover designs.

Meep. A client who knows what's good for her is... a rare thing, sadly :|

Mmm.

2:08 PM
Mh... I wonder how many of the times displayed on SE are localized. Chat times seem to be, but the favorite on the right says "1 hour ago" when it's been about 3.
And actually that nothing to do with localization. Maybe just a gross approximation?

If it's anything like rep approximations, it always rounds to the nearest unit.
Based on observation, though, I think it always rounds down.
(My rep says "16k" as soon as I hit 15.5k, for example.)

Mh. When I hover, it says 12:52. It's now 16:11. Yet "1h ago"?
That's brutal rounding :)

If I go into the transcript, it says I said that around 12:50pm and it's now roughly 2:08.
So the important thing is to take all your timestamps from the same location.
(For the record, my local time is 0014.)

Ohh. The transcript does not apply timezones then it seems.
So you're right, one source for less confusion

Interesting localization demarkation, but makes sense.

2:23 PM
Oh, it's now "2h ago"
The plot thickens!

Gasp!

So, at the half-hour mark it ticks over.

The man in charge of flipping the numbers over got back from his lunch break?

@BESW So it rounds to the closest integer, mh!

Yup!
Same with rep, which rounds to the nearest 0.5k.

2:25 PM
OK, I think I need something more constructive to do than stare at timestamps XD

Possibly.

(even if it's incredibly entertaining! :p)

But it's a lovely distraction from my layout head/desking.
@jadarnel27 [wave]

2:47 PM
Hi, @BESW.

Also hi @TadeuszWójcik.
@jadarnel27 What's new?

Eh, work is just sort of being chaotic today.
And my D&D session got cancelled at the last minute Friday, which was disappointing.

Aw.

However, we're playing this Friday (fingers crossed). So I'm not too bummed.
What's new with you, @BESW?

[grumbles about clients]

2:56 PM
That good, eh?

Blarghen. Staying up late working on new cover drafts because the client finally came around independently to something I'd suggested months ago.
And then I need to do poster drafts for another client, because if I don't show up to the first meeting with drafts of the project (despite knowing next to nothing about it) the client will Have Ideas that I'll never shake.

I hate it when they Have Ideas.

Ideas are fine, if they're amenable to alteration.
But I've worked with this client before.

This conversation reminds me of a comic on The Oatmeal.

I think I know it.

3:05 PM
It's one of his most popular, so I wouldn't be surprised.
It seems like it applies equally well to graphic design (which is what it sounds like you do).

Aye. I specialize in print media--books, posters, magazines, that kind of thing.

Gotcha.

I'm currently working on a trilingual coffee-table-style social studies textbook, and I'm about to start doing the posters for this semester of university plays.
I love doing the theatre posters, but it's rough--I've got about a week to do 'em, from first meeting to final product, the costumes and sets usually aren't made yet, and the director often has Ideas.

@jadarnel27 /uncontrollable shudder/ /eye twitch/
What hurts the most is how universal this is ._.

At least when I'm done with a project and it's printed, I'm done with the project.

3:16 PM
> You are now a mouse cursor
Oh dear... that's... so true.

@BESW That's how I've been approaching my software contracts. When I'm dome, I'm done. Unless you want to pay me some more.
Haha, right @leokhorn - it's awful.

I have a client who does book page layout examples in PowerPoint.

@jadarnel27 It's the only escape, for sure. But it's so, so sad. It's hard to feel any involvement past that point.

But at least that's just to show me what he can't find the words for.
I also had a client who insisted that I do a several-hundred-page anthology layout in MS Word.

@BESW I think sketches/diagrams are okay to express ideas. As long as it doesn't become a blueprint ^^;

3:22 PM
@leokhorn Aye. PowerPoint is... not really ideal for this, though.

@BESW Because that's all he knew how to use?

@leokhorn Pretty much.

@BESW What do you mean? Power Point can do everything :D It even has ~transitions~ :D
/jaded sarcasm

@leokhorn Bite your tongue.

I'm still amazed at people sending a single picture as a Word or PP document, so... I can feel the pain.

3:29 PM
I am sympathetic to ignorance, but at some level hiring a professional should imply that you recognize you can't do it yourself.

@BESW You're right, that is the crux of the problem.

Okay, four new cover drafts completed.
Now, on to the poster mockups.
I want nothing to do with the usual poster styles for this play--I think they fail to actually convey what the play's about, and misdirect the audience.
So I need to come in with a really strong alternate design in order to redirect the client.

which play?

God of Carnage (originally Le Dieu du carnage) is a play by Yasmina Reza. It is about two pairs of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, who meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the evening goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening devolving into chaos. The play was a success in its original language, French, and has been equally acclaimed in its other English-translated productions in both London and New York. Plot Before the play begins, two 11-year-old children, Ferdinand Reille and Bruno Vallon (Ben...

hiya @KitFox we don't regularly find you in this part of the world :)
OOh I heard a review of this one on NPR once...I think

3:34 PM
But since the only reason I know that's the play I'm making a poster for is that I checked the theatre's website, I have no idea what it's about beyond what I've been able to look up online. And I've no clue what the director's got in mind for this production.
My current idea is a Dexter-esque poster.

or..a review of a similar book

3:49 PM
So it turns out that the iconic mooks for this series actually deliver long-winded soliloquies if you listen for long enough.

@Metool What series are you referring to?

borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Psycho This one. Find on page: too solid flesh

4 hours ago, by KitFox
I came to drum up some interest in the Writer's chat, but also I am planning to DM for the first time on Saturday and I'm nervous about it.
Hiya.

4:04 PM
@Metool Ah yes, I've had one do this once :). Couldn't quite make out what he was saying back then

@KitFox very fun :)
I'm not the regular DM of my group, but I usually run our change of pace sessions

I just did a buttload of illicit photocopying.

wa?

Not that I would ever, ever use office supplies for personal things.

@KitFox Nor would you ever claim to have done so on a Google-archived Internet transcript.

4:18 PM
Of course not.
That's just crazy talk.
It's just character sheets and maps anyway. Nothing illegal.
I shoulda copied these tables too. Maybe tomorrow.
It's probably telling that I enjoy filling out the forms almost as much I enjoy playing.

Heheh.
I think that's being called "private play" now: the bits of an RPG you can do by yourself between the sessions.

Shouldn't you be asleep by now?

I should've been asleep two and a half hours ago.

@BESW My mother told me that would make me go blind though.

@KitFox I do wonder if there's a better term.

4:27 PM
We could call it fluffing.

I'm not sure that's an improvement.
(And "fluff" means something different in RPG circles already anyway.)

Oh.
Less funny that way, I guess.

Mm.
"Fluff" is non-mechanical "flavor," as opposed to "crunch," which are the mechanical bits that don't necessarily have any inherent setting or narrative context.

Hmm.

So if you were to take the mechanical stats for a bowman and say that he's got a gun instead of a bow and arrows, you'd be "re-fluffing" the crunch.

4:31 PM
Oh, I see. Kind of like skins.

Yeah.
In some games, like Fate, it doesn't make much sense to distinguish between the two.

Sorry, wrong window.

[blink]

I've got two monitors and sometimes I type in the wrong place. You're an artist, I'm sure you know what that's like.

Ayuh.

4:42 PM
@BESW And in some games, like Legend, it's key to bringing crazy concepts to life.

hello everyone

hiya

[yawn] Okay, I'm getting punchy.
Goodnight.

@besw goodnight good sir

4:59 PM
Interested in writing? Thinking about NaNoWriMo this year? Just like to hang out? Come visit the Writer's chat, going on now the The Overlook on Writers.SE.

@kitfox what is this madness?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Madness? THIS. IS-- [falls down hole]

@besw indeed.

@JoshuaAslanSmith Spam advertising another SE?

Okay, actually going to bed for reals.

5:04 PM
Gnight BESW

@Aaron nah, just some cross site promotion :)

Trying to find a copy of Ghosts of Castle Dragonspear that isnt like 50 bucks

tried ebay yet?

obviously not posting about it here cause I dont wanna run afoul of our policies
yeah Id prefer free.... but yeah haha
usually not that person but axe to grind over it being gencon exclusive

@JoshuaAslanSmith blech

5:07 PM
again not asking for help here, just lamenting
@waxeagle I hope i havent forever tarnished my image

@JoshuaAslanSmith not at all. I have the same lament every time a new LA module comes out
It's an instore DM exclusive
and the few that show up on ebay are ridiculously high

Yeah looks like its 40-50 dollars going rate on near end bids, also a 70 dollar buy now option
I always though LAs and encounters seasons should be released via D&D insider 3-6 months after the fact
So there was a foulup at my game shop where the people who used to run encounters stepped out and me and this other guy sorta stepped in, but it really shoulda been this other chick because she cared so much more, but anyway we ended up not submitting the stats for players right and didnt get the encounters season before Murder at balders gate as a result and she said why dont you (me) buy it off ebay for 100 dollars.
was like, no way, our easy level of friendship is not worth a 100 dollar bribe

@JoshuaAslanSmith agreed

maybe when 4e is put out to pasture for real they will actually attempt to monetize old promo stuff, Its just baffling that they haven't yet.

@JoshuaAslanSmith would be a great thing to do via their partnership with drivethrough

5:21 PM
@waxeagle EXACTLY
I would dump so much money on that
especially the LAs
but even the encounters adventures which could easily be leveled up using 4es encounter balancing rules

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah I really want to run LA's with some of my group as one off kind of things.

5:58 PM
looked at WOTC's D&Dnext boards, that was a mistake

@JoshuaAslanSmith How so?

@metool KILL IT WITH FIRE
the edition wars
also the ridiculous amount of threads supporting OP magic users (in my opinion)

@JoshuaAslanSmith He killed it with coffee, then drank that coffee.

6:16 PM
@BESW The official name is Lonely Fun (says me).

6:31 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I was going to suggest Noble Knight Games, but... they have one for $130. Glik.
Now that I realize it's that recent D&DN all-in-one package, I kind of understand why :/.... Was this a convention exclusive?

@leokhorn yes, it was a gencon exclusive pretty much to the horror of everyone not going to gencon that was interested. You could pre-order online but you had to have somone physically go there and get it.
Yeah basically its an adventure up to date for the august rules packet (though the character pre gens are 1 packet back)

@JoshuaAslanSmith Pff... What an idiotic (aka commercial) idea :/
I don't suppose they even have PDF versions of it?

not now...

Glee.

Wizards has been pretty dumb about promo stuff never coming out for sale ever

6:38 PM
Yeah, that's just sad :/

me and wax eagle were discussing the foolishness of Encounters and Liar Assault materials never getting released as pdfs (Either for insider subs or through Drivethru rpg)

@waxeagle LA?
Oh, Lair Assaults, I presume.

@Zachiel LA means Lair Assault, basically one shot adventures at lvl 10 that take around 4 hours, all about combat, all about testing player skill over roleplay (like fourthcore)

Not that I know what those are
Ok now I know
Turns out that the player who wanted me to run a 4e game can't join our Friday game 3/4 of the time
...growl.
One player comes home from school really late, others wake up really early in the morning
And this guy is on another town (where his GF lives) during week-ends
T_T and he was so eager playing 4e

scheduling is always tough for peeps with different lifestyles

6:54 PM
Dinner time, afk for a while.

7:46 PM
Looking for ideas on how to justify, in fiction, a Mage or a Wizard (D&D 4e) partecipating only to some sessions (while dungeon crawling)

@Zachiel ahem a wizard did it.

XD

Preferably eladrin so there is intrinsic teleportation there, but basically he's rather randomly there or not.
every once in a while that fey step just goes wrong

@Zachiel I don't suppose a session will always be a whole adventure? He'll kind of drop in and out of in-progress scenarios?

@leokhorn He's going to drop 3 sessions out of 4

7:55 PM
@Zachiel Oh, it's the aforementioned I-wanna-play-oh-wait-I'm-not-available guy?

yes. And yes, a session would have a pair of encounters but there will be dungeons to explore, so he will suddendly appear or disappear

Well, an idea similar to wax eagle's would be that he's an (unwilling?) agent of a deity that teleports him around based on an elusive whim.
Sometimes he happens to be sent with that group of adventurers
And he possibly knows that said deity wants him to help whoever he's sent to... or else...
Or to make this less of a forced affair, he may be a willing agent who happily pops up as an adventurer-consultant :p
Possibly still working for the deity.
