@uhoh interesting question. I've also wondered whether or not directed radar pulses are underrepresented in military arenas. Like, if you have an AWACS aircraft (a big aerial radar) getting engaged with a radar-guided missile, I wouldn't be at all surprised if a combination of sensors could get a VERY powerful beam pointed back at the missile seeker and render it totally blind. I wonder what kind of arms race there's been in the engineering there

@ErinAnne I have often wished we had two new SE sites Optics & Photonics and Military & Warfare. :-) Physics SE is a lousy place to get optics questions answered (especially practical ones) and Politics SE and History SE (and okay a bit of Space SE) are the places I know where military technology questions have a snowball's chance on Venus of getting answered.

Speaking of Politics SE and military questions:

@uhoh - submarines cannot use radio. I was searching on Google if a green laser could be a useful tool for communications under water.

For example, a network of radio buoys that could communicate with submarines using lasers.
