But neither actually shows a clear indication of start time.

@uhoh yes, that one matters too. I put the other one because it gets you the show.

I'll just keep clicking "play" until some sound comes out :-)

your time? couldn't tell ya :)

I mean these pages do not display a time anywhere to be seen.

if you scroll down just a bit on the Listen Live page, it does say.
at least, it does on the desktop version.

oh, okay,thanks!

my pleasure :]

This edit seems to add details into the top of the answer to say it's wrong. Is that appropriate on this stack? It seems like a rather rude thing to do. If you thing an answer is wrong shouldn't you downvote, leave a comment and if you have the correct answer, answer it and let the votes fix themselves?
I'm aware it's merely the conclusion that's getting a correction, but from this meta answer on another stack (the answer isn't really site specific) it suggests that editing something as being wrong is vandalism, and really the correct answer should be posted separately. Is this something that's different on SX.SE? If a conclusion is wrong, editing a header in is ok?

Q: What is this NASA UAV, and what is its function?

uhohFor the question What's up with the “What's Up at Wallops” app? I was reviewing the What's up at Wallops website and drifted to the launch photos page where I saw this aircraft. I did not find a caption, and a quick reverse image search in google did not return any helpful results. I am fa...

@Edlothiad The user who posted that answer has not been active for quite a long time. I wouldn't recommend this as a SOP, but this case is fairly extreme.
Ideally, in my opinion, it would be great if there were a mechanism to flag answers that were substantially wrong. Voting normally works, but this is a highly up-voted answer that is way out in left field.
Considering all of those points together, I think characterizing me as "rude" is a bit extreme!
What would be a better way to handle a highly up voted answer that's just plain wrong?

A: Are sun synchronous orbits possible for any place on Earth?

Brian LynchNote: Based on comments here and an understanding of how orbits are perturbed by the Earth's oblateness as expressed in $J_2$, the conclusions of this answer are incorrect. The orbit will precess around the Earth's axis, but generally not change in inclination appreciably. The conclusion at the e...

I think there is no basis for @Edlothiad to characterize this note as "rude"!

Q: If a sun-synchronous orbit passes over the poles twice a year, how can it have a constant (e.g. 98°) inclination?

uhohI am sooooo confused. The answer to Are sun synchronous orbits possible for any place on Earth? ends with In short, yes, sun-synchronous orbits are possible for any location on Earth. and mentions that this is true only because they pass over the poles twice a year, based on comments there. I ...

For additional background...
I have to add that the entire second half of that answer contains several incorrect statements, and I have no idea how it obtained so many up votes, no down votes, and no corrections, until I found it. This is a (hopefully isolated) failure of the community voting system to identify the quality of an answer.
update: Actually, looking closer, it seems that the erroneous conclusion was added by the user when @SF. provided a comment with the incorrect conclusion. In fact, the community pressured the user to make the answer wrong!
I wonder if simply rolling back the answer to its nearly-identical state sans-wrong-conclusion might be an alternate solution?

6:41 AM
@uhoh In my opinion, and disagree if you please, but going onto somebody's answer, regardless of their recent activity and putting a header into the post stating that they're wrong is a breach of the Be Nice policy, as well as vandalism of their post. I believe that what really should be done is a comment left, and a new correct answer posted which also explains why the other answer is wrong.

Q: Why is our changing-link-color scheme so lame?

uhohIf you view this answer and hover your cursor over the text, you can see each link clearly because it changes color dramatically, assuming your device has a hover method and the color contrast is suitable for your vision. But here in Space Exploration SE we have a very tiny shift in color, which...

@Edlothiad your terms sound extreme, but maybe they are standard SE terms. "Vandalism" sounds like it has an evil intent, and of course that's not the case.
So would you recommend that I roll back my edit, and then post a separate answer?

Vandalism is the word they choose to use when you change the meaning of a post that people had voted on. Yes the wording makes it sound evil even if you had the best intentions. I'm also not saying you intended to be rude or that you are rude at heart. Merely that such actions are often deemed "rude" in my experience on the network.
@uhoh Exactly, post an answer, and (unfortunately) let the voting system correct itself over time.

Okay, I will do that now.
Is there a reason you didn't just send a message to me using the @?
I found your comment by accident when I left an unrelated comment about the Aviation quesiton.

I wasn't specifically trying to call you out, but wanting to ask the people in the chatroom in general. I also know some people sometimes get annoyed when pinged into a chatroom (like myself) and didn't want to force you to come deal with something you hadn't done intentionally (as in you didn't intend to be rude or vandalise the post but instead improve the site).
In short, I wasn't sure if this was common practice for this stack or not and was sort of looking for a general consensus.
@uhoh You'll have at least 1 upvote waiting :)

Okay, well I'm not exactly here for the reputation (I've given away coming up on 10,000 here) but thanks.

Oh I'm aware, you've mentioned it several times. But the upvote is needed to vote the answer to the top so users stumbling across the question (like myself) are greeted with the right answer, regardless if you're here for the reputation or not.

7:23 AM
okay well you should not vote on an answer you have not yet read!

I can't vote on an answer that doesn't exist! But yes, assuming all the necessities to qualify it for an upvote (which, technically, according to the by-laws of the site is nothing at all) it will have an upvote waiting.

Hmmmmmmm.
I wonder if this SE also has some basics into the science behind exobiology.
Because.......I am curious as to how a lava tube microbial ecosystem could develop on Mars.

12:40 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto? Let me guess: this place is not the place for exobiology?

It wouln't be a bad place, although you might not get the best answers here.
Planetary science is explicitly allowed, although not frequently referenced.

@PearsonArtPhoto. So, if I asked about hypothetical Martian lava tube microbial ecosystems....not the best idea, right?

It is perfectly on topic here.
I just don't know if you would get a good answer.

Oh.
Just to be safe, I will keep the question in here.
So, what kind of life could live in Martian lava tubes?

Go ahead and ask it on the main site.

Q: How would a hypothetical Martian microbial ecosystem develop in the lava tubes?

Future HistorianI ask this here, due to the nature of the topic, even though Worldbuilding SE is just as good a place, but....you know. Just wanting to ask some people with actual scientific credibility than a bunch of random authors on this issue. So, what would hypothetical Martian lava tube microbes look li...

Is this good?
@PearsonArtPhoto? Is it site-worthy or better off on Worldbuilding SE (even though they are less qualified to deal with the issue)?

It's fine here.

Two close votes already!?
WHY!??!?!!??!!?

One for "Primarily Opinion Based" and another for "Off-topic as it's better suited on another scientific stack (such as Physics, Biology, etc.)"

1:06 PM
@Edlothiad? What? It was @PearsonArtPhoto's idea.
sighs
This is why I prefer keeping that to the main chat.

Pearson isn't the community. Also, don't shoot the messenger.

Fine............
It was still his idea.

It has an upvote, and 2 close votes isn't enough to close it. Pearson has also edited to something I would assume makes it on-topic.

:D
@Edlothiad. Sorry, I just wanted to give some context first.
:/

No need to apologise to me, I have touched the question.

1:08 PM
Just because I say it is on topic doesn't mean the community will always agree with me.
The primary opinion might be true, but not off topic.

@PearsonArtPhoto. It has to have a basis somewhere.
If you have any opinions on the matter, at least back that up with some factual evidence, right?

The POB vote is likely because we have yet to confirm for certainty the existence of life on Mars, and (AFAIA) would have to confirm that lava tubes on Mars would produce similar life to those on Earth, with those two assumptions someone might find it far too opinion based for and objectively correct answer.

Like I said, that one could be legit, but it is not off topic.

Aw, James Webb delayed again. :( https://www.space.com/40102-james-webb-space-telescope-launch-delay-2020.html

@Donald.McLean Leaks are good, leaks build excitement, embrace the leaks!

I have been told, by some of my older co-workers, that they had three different "one year to launch" parties for Hubble.

LOL
I didn't realize you were in the group of people told not to comment on James Webb...
I actually saw James Web being built at Goddard a few years ago.

Well, the Institute is where the JWST mission operations center is being hosted.
And of course, it will be part of MAST.

Yeah, for some reason I just didn't remember that. Now that you mention it, I think I remember hearing about that, but...
It's been a while.

1:53 PM
@FutureHistorian Sorry for the further edit on your question. I know it makes the wording pretty clunky, but I think it's the best chance at preventing it from being shot down for being opinion based.

:D
Well..........that ruins everything I had planned out.
But by 2021, the JSWT is already in orbit anyway.
:P

Knock on wood...

I sure as heck hope so. They've been working on it for my entire time at the institute.
Though back then it was still known as the Next Generation Space Telescope.

Anyway.......I am curious about something.
Terraforming Mars is how ethical?
Especially if some kind of microbe is found on the planet for some weird reason?

That's one that is being debated to this day.

2:05 PM
But would it be a source for conflict?
As in: Martian colonists could start a war on the planet over terraforming?

See Red/Green/Blue Mars.

@FutureHistorian People fight wars for all sorts of stupid reasons. To be specific - pretty much all wars are fought for stupid reasons, just some are more stupid than others.

Mars Direct has a good section on terraforming, although probably quite out-dated

@PearsonArtPhoto? Where do you think I got the idea?

2:07 PM
Besides, the Greens and Reds for me are not enough.
They should have added in the Orbital faction for those that wanted to live....well, NOT on Mars' surface.
And if they had found microbes....well, they should have added in a Brown faction (one that was pro-terraforming, but with the interests of preserving the already existing native ecosystem in the lava tubes)./
*.
Sorry.
@PearsonArtPhoto? So, realistically, how populated does Mars have to be to allow for a situation like my proposed Red Troubles?
And........NOTE: In my case, by the mid-25th Century (after two more attempts for independence, but with the other Solar System colonies joining in, especially in the Asteroid Belt and Outer Solar System), Mars has independence, but not as a united government.
If anything, Mars is basically a bunch of quarreling, bickering nation-states like Earth is today, with the closest thing to a representative for Martians in the Solar System being the United Martian League, and it is basically the Martian version of the modern UN anyway.
@PearsonArtPhoto? Does that sound like a less utopian version of the Mars Trilogy?
Or what?
Besides, at least this time, I had space WWI and space WWII (keeping real physics in consideration and the like).

Society is outside of my realm of expertise...

Well, is 900,000 colonists good?
Or is 1 million to 10 million more appropriate?

Elon claims 1 million is required.
No idea how true that is...

Well, let us go with a population of 9.8 million colonists by 2159 (since alternate history).
So.......
Light Green = Dome Greens. Red = Reds. Dark Brown = Browns. Normal Green = Earth Greens.
No Orbitals on the surface, since....well, they are in orbit.
I am going to find a better template map so I can add settlement names later.

2:30 PM

I forget why they fight in Red/Green Mars series. I strongly remember cutting the orbital beanstalk and its consequences. That was super cool, in terms of a clever story construct.

@geoffc? So, any areas of serious contest between the Reds and the other Martian settlements (supported by Earth)?
Based on the map?

There were a couple of reasons.
I think the main thing was that Earth wanted to push more people to Mars, while Mars wasn't keen on the idea.

@PearsonArtPhoto? So, during the Red Troubles, what regions in the map would feature the fiercest fighting?
Because.........

That goes beyond the realm of science and engineering, and in to the scary realm of story plot.

2:38 PM
Hmmmmmmmmm.
Good point.

When they're talking about JWST specs, K might mean Kelvin.

Q: What are the raisons d'être for the Large Binocular Telescope "binocularity"?

uhohedit: The short form of the question is Why are there TWO telescopes?? A longer version follows. The Large Binocular Telescope (and LBT blog as source of images below) has two 8.4 meter diameter mirrors, allowing for the possibility of interference in one dimension. I'm aware that a single bas...

@Donald.McLean I know this is not one of "your" telescopes. I have read some about it and am trying to think of a good answer, but words escape me. Any thoughts?

I have always wondered that...
I used to walk by the facility making the mirrors all the time, and they would always brag about them, but I thought, why...

Hmmmmmm.
Any thoughts on the settlements map so far? I am trying to add the names of the settlements at the moment.
And I was going to name one of the settlements Putingrad before remembering that it is an alternate timeline that could keep Putin in the KGB anyway.
As a joke.

@PearsonArtPhoto I can imagine some guys standing outside of a building telling passers-by "We got two of 'em! We got two of 'em!"
But I don't think that's exactly what you mean

Who saw the settlements map?

The facility they build them is actually underneath the University of Arizona Football Stadium, or at least in that area.
They have a giant pair of doors that I guess open up and reveal a 300 or so foot hole that they use to pull the mirrors out.

3:12 PM
Because I kind of need a few names for the settlements besides the ones I came up with (since I already named a few of them in the paint file).
@PearsonArtPhoto? Any decent names for a Martian settlement?

Don't ask me for names.
It took me over a year just to name my computer game I've been working on...

By the way, I feel I should name a settlement Underhill as a reference to the Mars Trilogy.
Wait. PC game?

@PearsonArtPhoto. Must...play test....game......

It's been delayed while I do stuff with Where is Roadster, but...
If you want to take a look at it, I think I have a version on my itch page.
It is a game about sea trading.

3:19 PM
Oh......

I'm likely going to do something space related instead, starting fairly soon.

And I want to have my dream 4x space strategy game with NO FTL.
And I have a concept for it (unfortunately, it is not written down).

I'm not going to do something quite that ambitious...

But to simplify, it is an STL 4x space game where you can play as an interstellar civilisation starting in your home planet, doing the usual 4x space stuff, BUT there is no FTL travel or communications.

I have 3 ideas for a game that I'm going to do a few prototypes for, likely in May, possibly sooner.

3:24 PM
To compensate, however, radical life extension has become a reality (at least by the mid-game), which allows prolonged human lifespan to the point crewed interstellar missions become more acceptable.
So....no FTL, but radical life extension is a thing, and you can play as one of 10 base species, as well as custom species to do 4x strategy stuff, but with the main limit being the speed of light (and time).
@PearsonArtPhoto? Could that work?

Two of the 2 games have something to do with solar system level exploration. The third prototype I want to do is a kind of action thing.
Who knows. It could work if you have the time and money to work on it, but the same can be said about just about anything...

@uhoh Bones meme

NOTE: The radical life extension technology I mentioned is in the mid-game, since...I do NOT want to give the player the technology immediately, but rather have the player be challenged and be forced to earn his way to interstellar flight.
And when the player does get to that point, he is rewarded for it.
And I have time, but not ££££££.
Thankfully, I have Unreal Engine 4 installed.
Anyway, I need to learn to code first, which is a problem.

Second Genesis is a 1986 science fiction novel by American author Donald Moffitt. In the previous novel, The Genesis Quest (1986), the alien Nar species discovered radio transmissions containing the genetic codes and cultural records of a species called Humanity, transmitted from a distant galaxy. Now the humans created with this information have discovered the biochemical key to immortality, and have decided to dedicate their now-long lives to discovering their origins in the distant Milky Way. They create a starship using a Dyson tree called Yggdrasil, bound to a Bussard ramjet, to search for...

So, i need a decent programming language.

3:30 PM
@FutureHistorian Choosing a programming language is like choosing an ice cream flavor.
2

Hmmmmm. For a 4x space game, would Python work?

Python is a poor choice if you ever intend to monetize something.

Most languages will work. It's a matter of what works better for you. I would never choose Python, but that's just a personal preference.

An engine choice is probably more important early on, which tends to dictate the language.

I gave up "technology as religion" long ago.

3:33 PM
Unreal/C++ and Unity/C# are the two most popular choices for game engines.

@PearsonArtPhoto. One Unreal Engine 4 4x space game with no FTL, here I come!
And Newtonian physics.

If I had time to develop a game, I would be tempted to make it web based, which would be a whole different set of technologies.

Good point.

Of course, I'm a web app developer professionally, which colors my thinking.

Hmmmmm. I will see what I can do with Unreal Engine 4.
So, no one noticed the Martian settlements map?

3:52 PM
@FutureHistorian Sorry, wasn't paying attention. Settlement location is usually a function of available resources. For much of Earth history that has been water, arable land, mineral deposits, etc.

Oh........
Ah....much better.

@Donald.McLean For Mars, water would still be a big one. Arable land--not so much. All of the land would have to be adapted to what we want to farm (or we can adapt what we want to farm to the land). Mineral deposits would still be big.

@called2voyage? Are the settlement spots good? NOTE: Light Green = Dome Green. Green = Earth Green. Red = Red and dark brown = Brown. The orbitals are in orbit, so they are not modeled on the map.
I happened to notice that most of the settlements on Mars in the map are in Arabia Terra, with some competition on the Elysium Montes area, as well as Tharsis, Valles Marineris and possibly Chryse Planitia.
The Browns have all of Hellas Planitia, though.
I wonder how valuable Arabia Terra and the surrounding area would be to colonists.

@Donald.McLean I don't understand what you mean exactly, but that's ok.

4:08 PM
And reading the Wikipedia article.....
Lots of water ice, though nothing comparable to Hellas Planitia or the Martian North Pole.
@uhoh. Curious question: would Arabia Terra be a valuable region to colonists on Mars?
Oh wait.
I just answered my own question.
But I am not sure that the map would have THAT many settlements in the region.

@uhoh In Star Trek (the original series), Dr. McCoy complains about being asked to do something that is not (in his opinion) the job of a doctor.
In this case, I'm a software developer, not an astronomer. :-)

4:23 PM
Oh, right.

@Donald.McLean d'oh! I see, "Bones" is capitalized not only because it appeared at the beginning of the sentence.
Now I am lost in TOS-tubes for the rest of the night... ;-)
"I'm a doctor, not an escalator" I don't remember that one!

@called2voyage Exactly that. Also, all things being equal, closer to the equator or closer to the poles will be better.

The Curiosity question really got me thinking, but in the end, I gave the best answer I could without spending $40 to buy a paper to read more. There is a limit to the value of fake internet points.

7:06 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto Fake internet points aren't even enough to get me to go out of my way to look at the site.

The knowledge I can gain is what gets me to look at the site, or research an answer.

I received a copy of Surviving Mars to do a review of the science and engineering of the game. Should be interesting.
