@Undo Apparently not.

2:19 AM
@PearsonArtPhoto: Could we possibly hope to see one of the Gas Giants' satellites encounter a tidal rip during our lifetimes?

8 hours later…
9:49 AM
@Everyone hmmm this reminds me we don't have a single question on the horseshoe orbits
like... dunno... will Janus and Epimetheus ever collide or something

10:12 AM
@TildalWave oooh! asks question on horseshoe orbits

@RhysW ... hiss.... spit

2 hours later…
12:01 PM
@Everyone Doubtful, but, who knows.

12:54 PM
boohooohooohooo! RhysW shoe-horned my horse-shoe
sulks

I keep hoping to get a planetary science question to hit the popular question list, but I'm not sure how that'll actually work. Hmmm.
Maybe I'll get a hit with this one.

Q: Why are the Rings of Saturn so much brighter than the other planets?

PearsonArtPhotoIt seems to be a given that gas giants have rings. However,Saturn has rings that are far larger than any others in the Solar System, and far more visible as well. What is unique to Saturn that it has such a large and complex ring system? Images from Wikipedia, in order of planet, Jupiter, Saturn,...

Current Topic of the Week : until October 5. Next Week: from October 6 to 12.

I feel really weird bringing this up, but I believe that instead of closing this you could add one of those little notice thingys that say, 'related to a rapidly changing event'. Would that be more appropriate?

Q: How did the government shutdown of 2013 affect NASA operations?

called2voyageAt midnight on October 1, 2013 the US government entered the state of government shutdown where all functions deemed non-essential are suspended. How did this shutdown affect NASA operations?

@Undo Not a bad idea. It's been long enough that there's data out there, I don't see any harm in re-opening it.

@PearsonArtPhoto That looks better.
And I got the obsolete comments :)

3 hours later…
4:49 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto @Undo: With the shutdown question open, can I now ask the question about pay-scales to cosmonauts ?

What's that question?

Do cosmonauts qualify for hazard-pay, and over-time pay?
atleast for the purpose of calculation

Sure, why not?

@Pearson can you please tell me where did you find the incoherent in my answer to your question

It just seems like a bunch of facts lumped together, but doesn't quite seem to make a story.
The pictures also seem to be just lumped in there as well. Not that I complain about seeing pictures of Saturn's rings, mind you, but...

5:05 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto: Can we have 'cosmonaut' as a synonym for 'astronaut' in the tag library?

I would think they would be close enough...

The authors seek to understand how two galaxies are interacting with each other.

Eh?

Q: What term should be used for *naut?

Paul A. ClaytonWhile I do not object to the use of astronaut as inclusive of cosmonauts, taikonauts (which Wikipedia indicates is a media term with limited use), astronauts "proper", and any other 'naut, even within an English-language site I do not know if such is insensitive to the activity of "non-Western" (...

Vote for my answer;-)

Bribery! Corruption! Call the feds! q+:

5:10 PM
It's not bribery, it's telling you to vote for me because I want what you want;-)

Upvoted!
Beep!
@PearsonArtPhoto: p.s. Are you sure you're not a Senator?

I'm for the campaign position that all of the House and Senate needs to be fired, and start over again. What do you think?

@PearsonArtPhoto I did - ages ago :-)
@PearsonArtPhoto simple solution - we have royalty who used to look after you guys. I'm sure we could do it again :-)

Actually, the question doesn't quite go for the tag. There really isn't a need for separate tags...

I think I need to learn the First Amendment (+:
Seriously, it's difficult enough for a layman to comprehend legalese - even if it is merely the constitution of an organization, let alone the constitution of a whole nation! And the collegium system is confusing to someone like me habituated to the Indian Constitution which, in turn, apparently borrowed heavily from the British

5:16 PM
@RoryAlsop Not quite that desperate to do so...

brb. Sir D wants out.

In the National Archives, they have a high fidelity copy of the Magna Carta, right next to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

@PearsonArtPhoto no? Fair enough :-)

5:51 PM
Astronomy still in private beta...
What's the mood over there?
I hate magnetic fields... I really do...

Astro is so so
It's struggling to find its identity.
I think it has potential, but I don't know if it will be realized.

6:07 PM
back... phew
@PearsonArtPhoto @called2voyage Can either of you transform 'cosmonauts' into a synonym for 'astronauts'?

I have a discussion going about it right now

uh oh

We can talk about it here if you like

@called2voyage That's a part of why I didn't participate in it this go around.

> When you say "cosmonauts" are you referring to Russian spacefarers? Because if you are using it to refer to non-Russian astronauts, that is non-standard usage that we don't recommend on this site.
from your post, @Everyone
it's the comment I made
@PearsonArtPhoto I understand.

6:13 PM
@called2voyage: 'Cosmonauts' is used out of habit; the question is intended to include all space-farers

@Everyone Ok, then we need to edit it to say 'astronauts'. On English-language sites we use 'cosmonauts' to refer exclusively to Russian astronauts.

@called2voyage: I'll make the change. With 'cosmonauts' used to refer exclusively to soviet astronauts - should I edit that tag?

We don't need to edit the tag
It hasn't been used yet.
I know a guy who works for mission control who would probably be able to give some insight on this from a NASA perspective, but I don't know if I still have contact information for him.

6:46 PM
no worries; it's not as if it's urgent, or anything
right. time to hit the sack. 'nini

7:30 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto I closed that "Will NASA really..." question. It has nothing to do with Space Exploration, short of abusing NASA's name now that they're on hold. Brace for more possible questions like this, because there's nobody to protect the general populace from traps like this, at least in the US and for the time being.
It is a hoax. 100% no doubt about it. And I give you my permission to quote me on it. But here's the thing. While I may be an information security professional, Space Exploration isn't a website for this. IT Security would be, if it didn't come out as a legal advice, which is something much frowned upon on Stack Exchange for a plethora of reasons. There is also literally google number of websites out there that phish for user emails with various claims and no reassurances or legal gotchas explained, littering the Internet. If people are so naive to fall into an obvious trap, we can't do much about it. — TildalWave 7 mins ago
I also can't advice strongly enough to immediately delete such links used not to forward new victims to such sites with seemingly our blessing to go there.
And thanks to @called2voyage for catching that!

7:53 PM
@TildalWave No problem, I thought about voting to close myself, but I wanted to see what you thought. I thought in the meantime that I would scrub the link and add a warning.
Also, I think that we should keep this question closed but not delete it. That way if we get more questions of the same sort we can quickly close them as duplicates instead of having to reargue the same reason for closing the original.

@TildalWave If anything, we should move it to Skeptics.
That's the kind of stuff they specialize in.

I don't think so, for the reason I already listed about not deleting it.
If someone wants to ask about it on Skeptics, they can.

8:22 PM
@PearsonArtPhoto no... there's not a single SE site to speculate on behalf of a profiteering, phishing third party. It would only advertise the phishing location more.
in fact, I'll look when I have the time if the OP is associated with the website posted in any way... in abt 20 min.
How about a new close reason "... of topic because it is about providing information or speculating about it on behalf of or about a third party that we don't associate with." something like that?

8:40 PM
@TildalWave I like that idea.

OK I'll write something in that meta thread ... having more time in T-5 minutes :D

should cover product recommendation and legal advice at the same time

hi @TildalWave

@UV-D Hey ;) What's up down under?

the sun

Didn't they kill it? At least in the UK they did LOL

lol
it's just past 7am hre
I am glad you convinced me to come back here

9:08 PM
blimey it's 11pm here
@UV-D How do you find us?

I open my browser, do a search...and there you are....oh wait...
pretty good - looks like planetary sciences are big here

@UV-D It's the topic of the week this week ;)
actually, I just wanted to ask you what do you think about some question I was pondering on

suppose I better ask an awesome question
go ahead

damn typos

lol what typeos?

9:11 PM
OK, about Nili Patera areology ... I was looking at some THEMIS and HIRISE images and something caught my eye ... not the dunes, those are lovely and all, but some topology within the craters north to the dunes...

link?

There are what appear to be some regular and seemingly predictable patterns forming that I can't explain... like martians would be counting how many times Voyager 1 left the Solar system, there are lines... and I'm not sure if those are features of wind erosion and sedimentation, or actual rock.
Now, Emily Lakdawalla requested HIRISE to focus on "the butterfly crater" and her wish (HiWish) was granted: planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2012/…
but that one is not even that good of a representative of what I had in mind, this one is pretty close to Nili Patera dunes... but if you look up North towards the ridge, check inside the craters
still within the Syrtis Major Planum

hmmm

but funny enough, these topological features only appear "in the valley" and they're utterly clean on the plato
So I'm not sure what question to ask, but I'm really curious what these lines are... should I ask about physical models explaining wind sedimentation of impact craters, or just ask in general (might not be specific enough)?

I would ask about physical models and terran-analogies explaining the wind sedimentation of impact craters

9:22 PM
OK cheers I'll work on it, try to word it clear enough

hi @called2voyage iiiiii'm heeeeere
what to ask what to ask
@TildalWave I am thinking of asking a question about the Uranian satellite Miranda

9:40 PM
@UV-D I see that. Good to see you here!
@UV-D I'm doing well. A little worried about Astro

I am very worried about Astro
I can see now that very few of us are putting in an effort

Me too, I tend to use "little" to mean a lot
you know, hyperbolically
@UV-D Frankly, I would put in more if I had the time.
I'm not as "close" to the field of astronomy as I used to be, so it takes a lot more research for me to get up to speed--which takes time--time which I do not have.

I don't have a lot of time either, especially next week onwards

For me it's for the rest of the month
since I'm transitioning jobs and moving across the country

Evening

9:45 PM
hey, Rhys
are you as worried as we are?
about Astro

yes, we have too few experts, unfortunately it is a field dominated by the novice / amateur level (myself included in that classification)

I think there are plenty of novice/amateur level people who could provide better questions and answers
but we don't have them on the site

yeah that's sort of what I meant too

the problem is that it is a community that is hard to advertise to

we need to rearrange the stars to spell out "Astronomy.StackExchange.com"

9:48 PM
lol

anyone have a tractor beam?

Best case we would end up like History.SE, which I would be fine with.
But I don't think we will meet our best case.

what is history like?

mostly non-professionals but enough who have an expert-level understanding of the field to keep it alive
that's what I envisioned Astro becoming, realistically
but I don't think it's going to get there at this pace
especially with the lack of SE staff backing

I am in the midst of getting there, but am still in the first week of my self taught astro course, so it will be a long while before I have expert questions
@called2voyage I wouldn't say lack, Jon has hung around quite a lot

9:51 PM
yes, but he has been highly critical of the direction (or lack of direction) that the site is taking
and I agree with his criticism

critical is good, doesn't give us false hope

but I think that the site needs public exposure to get traction

i would rather he be critical and be wrong than optimistic and wrong

I think, that if that theory is wrong, you can always end the public beta
@RhysW Definitely, but so far he has shown no sign of willingness to test the waters
but he may have better data than me to back up his position

on the contrary, I think he is making sure the water is deep enough before opening the pool
but our guessing won't change anything, hopefully we are wrong and the site does fantastically

9:54 PM
@RhysW I don't think that analogy quite fits. For me it is more like he wants the water to be deep enough before increasing the flow.
@RhysW Right, again, I'm just worrying...not saying that it means anything

hmm, i think i have glass in my leg that i cant get out
(sudden change of topic, im easily distracted)

ouch
I'm fine with the change of topic
really there's not much else we can say about Astro at this point

yeah, was at a party about a month ago, think its stuck in there since then

@RhysW Wild party?
;)
I'm a few innuendos short of a Tildal joke.

@called2voyage hah you dont know the half of it!
@called2voyage @TildalWave jokes are always short innuendos :P

9:59 PM
hah

those jokes definately arent in short supply

@TildalWave I think we have enough upvotes on our Community Ads that we can un-stick it from the sidebar in here.

i could unstick it, but will wait for tildals agreement, its his post afterall

right, I figured I'd ask the man himself
@RhysW So what are the Brits making of all this yank shutdown business?

shutdown?

10:07 PM
Have you heard about the US government shutdown?

no whats that?

The US government "shutdown" on Tuesday (Oct. 1) for the first time in 17 years.
Basically all of the "non-essential" government employees are on unpaid leave until US Congress can agree on a budget.

they can do that?

why?

10:09 PM
41% of government employees or about 800,000 people are on unpaid leave

.... christmas party?

basically, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives refused to bring the bill for the budget to the table, because some of the fringe Republicans think that our new healthcare plan needs to be delayed.
Today they still couldn't come to an agreement

so...people dont want healthcare?

eh, it's a controversial subject

seems sort of silly to me, "would you like us to save your life" No thanks, id like to buy another extra large mc donalds with this money

10:11 PM
hi

Here people call the "Affordable Care Act" (the new healthcare law) "Obamacare".

just tell em obamacare comes with a side of fries?

About 50%-60% of people polled in the US don't like "Obamacare"

i could never lead a country, i would be extremely sarcastic

Fringe Republicans really don't like "Obamacare", so they came up with this plan to threaten to not pass the budget this year

10:12 PM
@UV-D hi
ok so now the NSA dont have a budget either

Yes!

yep
97% of NASA is shut down too

though im pretty sure the UK has an equivalent of NSA
@called2voyage yeah :/

all national parks are shut

10:14 PM
I dropped in here to show you how I get so many helpful comment flags:

The thing is that the "Affordable Care Act" or "Obamacare" already passed into law legally.

And now it's gone into effect too.
But the hardline Republicans still want it delayed, and they're willing to do this to get that.

Obama kind of pushed Obamacare through... Illegally.
Or at least unconstitionaly.

He definitely did some pushing, but I wouldn't call it illegal.
You could argue unconstitutional

10:16 PM
sigh, i stopped looking at what goes on in politics, any longer than 5 minutes and i seriously debate becoming independent and running my own country

but that point is moot since the Supreme Court already ruled

The Supreme Court was wrong, but it's not my place to argue :)

politics....hiss.... spit...

Shoot, Manish and his bot aren't here.

@Undo I'm not debating that, but they've already made their decision.

10:17 PM
I know :(

I find it funny how people insist its a 'free' country despite the fact everyone on Earth is basically born into a form of slavery

Wait, what in the world are we doing talking politics in here?

Which makes this whole shutdown/budget manipulation business a really seedy way to get around things

Don't we have a Politics site?

@Undo It's a chat board we can talk about whatever

10:18 PM
Ohh, I bet politics is pretty active right now.

I have a hole in my flipflop...

@UV-D dear eliza dear eliza?

@Undo Actually, the Politics chat is pretty dead

yup

But their stack is doing pretty good

10:19 PM
they created a new tag for it
only 10 questions

Hmm... Do we have any blue people in here? Calling blue people!

@Undo - was there a meta post about one of my answers on astro? my inbox says that there was a comment on my recent answer that is not there now, but it alluded to a link t a post in meta, but I can no see it

we need blue people?

I need a blue person to do something for me.

that sounds ominous

10:21 PM
I need my sock puppet to have access to the room.

this room?

Yes.

why wouldnt it?
its public room

you need 20rep to talk here.

oh :P

10:21 PM
And 1 < 20.

whats it called?

Odnu. The only one on the site.

ok, i can give it access

Even room owners can't override the 20-rep thing. You need a diamond.

oh so it is, the option was there but rejects afterwards

10:23 PM
@Undo?

@UV-D Ehh?
Want something?

All right, I gotta go!

cya c2v

later

hmm i should probably sleep

10:24 PM
@Undo was there a meta post about one of my answers on astro? my inbox says that there was a comment on my recent answer that is not there now, but it alluded to a link t a post in meta, but I can no see it

@UV-D I don't think so... lemme check.

see ya @called2voyage

@UV-D Nope, couldn't find anything. What did the comment say?
And on what answer?

well I could only see part of it - it appeared the person I was answering was disputing the distance to alpha centauri

Oh, probably not a meta discussion then.

10:27 PM
however in my inbox, there is a partial link to a meta post

Can you see the post number?

Q: 11 days before public beta

Zoltán SchmidtPreviously I've already explained my worries about the future of Space.SE - now the end of public beta is about to come and according to Area 51 the site has good conditions. Well, almost. Visits per day is too few, way below the expectations. Would it mean any trouble? Or is the site going to e...

nope
all I have is "Also, not sure in the distance of Alpha Centauri, so please check this: meta.astronomy.stackexcha"

right, im off, cya tomorrow

see ya @RhysW

11:33 PM
@TildalWave?

11:51 PM
@called2voyage You think? I didn't look in a few days... hang on
@UV-D Yar?
@PearsonArtPhoto that "will NASA announce..." question ... would you agree to move it to meta, so you can enjoy repcapping again through other answers of yours? :P
It would take 40 rep of your account, but I'm sure I can find 4 answers I didn't yet manage to upvote on my own to "mitigate" that LOL
